It wasn't difficult to find however, because there was a sign in front for CareTech and the building itself had signs with all the store names as well. I went around 5:00pm on Saturday and it was easy to find street parking although I'm not quite sure about the other days. It looks like they may have a back parking area as well. I messaged CareTech beforehand, asking if they can fix my broken laptop and they were really quick to respond! I accidentally spilled water over it back in August and fried my MacBook Pro. It seems my Logic Board is damaged and most likely my keyboard too (it's difficult to tell if the keyboard is damaged or not unless it's turned on but that's where I spilled water so... it's most likely done for). It seems like it really depends on the model to accurately quote replacement parts and sadly, Apple parts are crazy expensive. I got price quotes from several different places so I'm certain they're not overpricing me. Also, after talking to them, I don't think they're the types of people that would! For my case, data retrieval would have been $70/hour which is cheaper than most places I inquired! It seems it really depends on if/how much the hard drive was damaged and how hard it is to retrieve the data (internally). When I walked in, Charlie greeted me very warmly and he even remembered my name and situation from messaging me! There was one other person there at the time and they were both really friendly and helped me open up the laptop and take out my SSD. They talked me through different options and it seemed like they were genuinely interested in helping me diagnose the problem more than just making quick cash. Fortunately/unfortunately, my iPhone's microphone had stopped working just the day before, meaning that I could hear people talking but they couldn't hear me, so I had a chance to give Tech Lab a try. The building is very Columbia City-ish with plenty of parking. Inside, there were large screens posting info about their vast services (don't judge them about the extra "L" in the word "follow"--they're going to fix it. It's not nearly as noticeable as when a Chinese menu has the word "shrimps" on it.) I was greeted by Charles, who looked very smart--and not just because he was wearing glasses. I told him about my dilemma--my new Hans Solo in carbonite case didn't protect my phone from a fall and phone back itself cracked. I attribute it to the fact that Hans was in carbonite. If his hands and legs were free, I'm sure Hans would have been able to shoulder-roll onto the floor. After some entertaining banter, I left Hans in good hands with Charles. I was given an initial quote and an ETA. He even called me partway through to tell me that he tested my phone parts in other phones and other parts into my phone to see if he could isolate the issue. Awesome. I was just thinking he would see the part was broken and replace it--but he went above and beyond at no initial cost. When he called later, he sounded apologetically grim: My motherboard was damaged. The motherboardin' motherboard. A death sentence to something replaceable like an iPhone. Apple had told me that my phone could be upgraded for $150 (but I'm waiting for the Fiiiiiiiiiive!) so I'm going to wait until I can't tolerate not talking on the phone. This may be a good time for me to work on my ESP skills anyways. Even more amazing, my final bill was less than HALF the original quote that I was given. And it wasn't the lower bill that blew me away, it was the goodwill behind it. I felt the love *fist pump* So in conclusion, this is the place to be. So clear out the [*ahem*] questionable content on your devices and bring 'em on down. Don't forget to "like" them on Facebook so you can get $5 off of your first service with them. I took my PC in because it periodically doesn't send a signal to the monitor. I asked them to diagnose the problem and give me a call with an estimate on the repair. The guy says to give him a couple of days. Five days later I walk in and ask about my PC and he says it's fixed, it had a virus, that will be $150.00... I told him I was expecting a call with an estimate, what if I don't have $150.00? He said he'd make a note to call me in the future and he knocked off $50.00. I thought, well, that's a quick and generous gesture and I had a working computer again. I paid him and said, thanks, now the computer is working fine? He said "yes". I said, "so you fixed the problem?" He said, "well I'm not saying that." I thought he was kidding. The computer worked for less than twelve hours after leaving the store. Just horrible service, amazed that they aren't boarded up like most of the little shops in Des Moines. Another repair shop shop replaced the video card. It works fine now. But I'm still out $100.00!
