Frog Island Seafood - Cool mural paying homage to the blue crab

    Frog Island Seafood

I have been shopping with frog Island for almost a decade. The first time I complained about…read moresomething - 2 pounds of the steam shrimp being completely overcooked and inedible - and called right away. I was treated like a criminal. I was told by Hannah, apparently the daughter of the owner, that she couldn't do anything, but finally agreeing to replace 1 pound of the 2 pounds I purchased. No refund option. (I live 45 minutes away) I went in, gave them another chance to do the right thing, talked to them again, and they still refused to give me a refund or replace the whole order. They said I should've taken a picture of the overcooked shrimp. Huh? In what world does that even make sense? And I asked her, the day I talked to her about this, if she wanted me to pick the shrimp out out of the garbage and bring it to her and she said no. I guess they have enough business that they don't need the locals. It's a shame. But I am not ever going to do business with them again. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? Whatever happened to standing by your product?

First let me say that I normally don't like fried seafood because it's usually heavily breaded and…read moregreasy. Same goes for the leaden greasy hushpuppies. Well, you won't find that here!! Stumbled upon this unassuming gem while traveling for business. The number of cars in the parking lot was a good indication. When you walk in, it looks like a typical fish market that you would find in this area with a fish counter full of fresh offerings. Go around the counter & you'll see some tables & booths and a window into a small kitchen. You order at the register next to the window & are given a number. When your order is ready, you go to the counter to pick up. We were in heaven when we got our food! Everything was fried to perfection with a light flavorful coating. The scallops were huge & fresh! The soft shell crab was out of this world!...so juicy and flavorful!! The hushpuppies...I have to rave about these!! They're light, with a delicate crispy outside leading to an almost cake-like interior. They were delicious!!! The portions were generous and the prices excellent. Best of all is that this is obviously family run. Needless to say we polished off everything. This place is a definite keeper on my list & I honestly am still covering another taste of those scallops & soft shell crab. If you want ambiance, this isn't it. If you want service, this isn't it either....BUT if you want great Down East seafood, THIS is a must try!

Delicious food! Lovely room and cool view, service was underwhelming…read more We had good cocktails and then we had the duck egg rolls to start which were savory and delicious, hubby had shrimp and grits which he said were amazing... I had the catch of the day: pompano which was subtle and complex and quite simply delicious. Too bad the service was just so-so, perfunctory ... (like the waiter had been there and done that a million times -- ) ... otherwise an excellent meal and experience.

First things first we should not have dined here. We didn't have a reservation. For the second year…read morein a row we couldn't get a reservation. With small kids we rarely get away for a night on vacation and when we do we don't usually have the luxury of a pre-selected day. That means no reservation which means no Paper Canoe dinner. I am so glad we decided to stop in to check about a bar seat because the manager offered us a table with the stipulation they needed to turn it in about an hour: we were elated. We started with drinks, a spicy marg for me and an old fashioned for my husband. Both were great and made fresh. We also had bread service with olive oil and balsamic. The bread was steaming hot and fresh it was delicious. For entrees my husband ordered the waygu steak, he's never seen a real waygu on a menu and jumped on the opportunity to try it. When he took his first bite I thought he was going to weep. There was a perfect 'crust' on the steak, the plate came with a Japanese sweet potato, a pink Himalayan salt, greens and we thought maybe mushroom? The steak was perfect and the potatoes were amazing, they deserve praise too. I got the shrimp and grits, my favorite thing to order when it's on the menu: I've eaten a lot of shrimp and grits. This was my favorite, the grits were insane, so good, perfect texture, the shrimp (which were huge) were seasoned incredibly, I made it through three before passing my plate to my husband to finish. The sausage was great, a fattier piece, really tender and flavorful. I really loved the whole dish. There were two tree-sized asparagus (which I don't eat, but it's my husband's favorite) he said they were good! We wrapped our dinner just under an hour and in time for them to flip the table. We were so grateful to have the opportunity to experience Paper Canoe and can't wait to go back (hopefully with a reservation this time).
