This place is one of our favorites in Wichita. Especially for pancakes or waffles. And no matter which server you get, they are always super charming and personable. The atmosphere makes me feel like I'm in New England, but the staff treat me like I'm in Grandma's kitchen. When you go, go on a weekday morning, definitely not at the Sunday Brunch hour. This place gets packed and loud, especially with the tables being so snuggled together, and parking is limited. Nevertheless, it's well worth the visit! And go back if you can! read more

I've lived here all my 67 years, and have eaten at The Beacon lots of times. This morning I ate breakfast here. Something has changed. The only thing hot was scrambled eggs and ham. Stopped by on a weekday after the lunch crowd to have an extremely late breakfast/brunch meal. We were greeted and seated promptly and ordered within 5 minutes. The waitstaff wasn't the friendliest compared to some other similar spots in Wichita, but because I live in NYC, that didn't bother me. We ordered an egg breakfast, which the waitress helped me to choose since I am vegetarian, and my boyfriend had an egg, ham, English muffin breakfast. Both were served with hash browns. I had occasion to live in Wichita Kansas for a period of time. One of the charms and redeeming qualities of the city is, lack of pretense. It's like going back in time. Everything is simpler,less expensive and easy. That includes alot of diners where you feel like you've stepped back in time. The Beacon serves up basic breakfast for unbelievably reasonable prices. I ordered the horse shoe breakfast and had them substitute some things and our waitress was more than happy to tell the cooks in the back. Our food tasted amazing and though it reminds me of ihop, their food is 100 x better than ihop. definitely recommend giving this place a try. I'm honestly not sure how or why I haven't "Yelped" The Beacon before now. We've been eating here for the past 9 years every time we go visit one of our daughters in Wichita. It's high time I share my thoughts about this Wichita GEM. With regard to the food, I'm a BIG FAN of "The Shoe," a breakfast "stack" that starts with Texas toast (I usually have them sub in a biscuit instead), hash browns, crispy bacon (I suppose one could probably get sausage instead, but why?! Because... well... bacon!), and 2 eggs (I always choose over medium!), all piled up and smothered in cream gravy. It looks like a hot mess, but it's AMAZING. My bride most often orders a standard breakfast with 2 eggs, potatoes, sausage, and toast or a biscuit. My daughters, on the other hand, tend to be more adventurous, having tried almost all the breakfast items on the menu. There is almost always at least one pancake on the table, and the Breakfast Burrito is a big favorite for them. But, while the food is consistently good, the thing that makes this one of our favorite spots is what I'll call "The Beacon Experience." From the time you arrive at their small building near the downtown area and check in with the hostess, you'll see ZERO pretense. There is NOTHING fancy about this place; in fact, it's quite the opposite. For example, when we were here this past weekend I found myself drinking my coffee, chatting with my girls, and smiling because there are white wires (Telephone? Internet? Who knows?!) tacked messily against a back wall covered in dark red faux brick. It felt EXACTLY like something I would have seen in my small Southeast Texas hometown. Everything about it was, to quote Goldilocks, "Just right..." Every time we have the opportunity to go to The Beacon I can be sure of three things: 1. The food will be GREAT, 2. I'll over tip our server because we've talked and LAUGHED with her the whole time we've been there, and 3. We'll drive away talking about how much we love this place. If you find yourself in Wichita, KS, do yourself a favor and stop in. You'll be glad you did. read more

This restaurant is located downtown Wichita near Old Town. If you are from Wichita you have probably past the Beacon Restaurant over a dozen times but didn't realize it was there. We tried the restaurant for breakfast and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinning experience. We ordered breakfast and had a variety of menu items that included biscuits and gravy, omelette, chicken fried steak and a breakfast burrito. All breakfast items had amazing flavor and were cooked perfectly. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. This restaurant is setup like an old school dinner, so do not expect an upscale decor, but the breakfast hands down is the best in Wichita. I highly recommend the Beacon Restaurant. read more

Pretty basic breakfast at a good price. This place has been around for a very long time, so they have to be doing something right. I had the chicken fried steak breakfast. The steak is what I remember as traditional from growing up, a breaded cubed steak. Fork tender and easy to cut. We'll seasoned and the gravy was thick and not heavily peppered. My wife had the game and eggs. The ham was pretty thin and a little burnt. She wasn't as thrilled with her meal as I was with mine, those the 3 stars instead of 4. The hash browns were good. The toast was a little over toasted. Coffee was on the strong side but not over powering. The building is old. Think throwback to the 1950's. It's clean inside but not visually stunning. Has the old time diner look to it with sort of a divey feel. If you want a really good basic breakfast with great service and prices that won't set you back, this is a great choice. read more
