Alan's Parkinson's had been progressing for the past few years. It required him to leave our home…read moreand move to The Point at Rockridge because of increasingly frequent falls. He had been hospitalized 2 or 3 times at the end of last year and began the conversation w/ medical staff about a referral to palliative care as well as starting the process of physician assisted death, which thankfully is an option in California. We had a telephone conference w/ the palliative care folks in early February and it became clear to us all that hospice was the agency that would be most appropriate to his case. The referral was made and the multidisciplinary hospice team was amazing, warm supportive to us all, available as needed. They arranged for medical equipment to make Alan more comfortable, including a better quality hospital bed. They arranged for him to have a massage. We had not had previous experience w/ hospice and I can unequivocally recommend Kaiser's hospice care. Tammy, who had experience w/ another hospice organization w/ her late grandmother several years ago, said the experience this time was much better. Alan's life ended March 27 and we miss him very much but are glad he was able to prioritize his quality of life over its longevity.

Finding a reliable hospice provider for a loved one is a daunting task often made under stressful circumstances. Our family, after extensive searching and disappointing recommendations from other sources, found Sonata Hospice through positive online reviews on Yelp. This review comes from a genuine family who utilized their services for a critical 10-day period. The level of care provided by the entire Sonata team to both our loved one and our family was amazing and far exceeded our expectations. We felt completely confident that our loved one was in excellent hands, and we as a family felt fully supported throughout this difficult process. Several team members deserve specific commendation for their outstanding professionalism and genuine compassion: Rachael (Nurse/Case Manager): Rachael was outstanding. Her work is a true blessing and a calling. She provided expert clinical care while simultaneously offering immense comfort to our family. The attentiveness she provided our loved one was consistent with the level of care one gives their own family. Her clear communication, explaining procedures, answering questions, and involving us in the care plan was a model of professional and empathetic care giving. Marsha (Home Health Aide): Marsha treated our loved one with dignity and affection, like she was caring for a member of her family. Her hands-on care was superb. Deciding on end-of-life care is perhaps one of the most significant decisions a family can make. It was mostly my aunt having to take on all the complicated decisions but the hospice employees provided compassion and support. The chaplain, Maria was very calming-never pushy, just compassionate and loving during a really overwhelming time. The social worker, Melinda was also wonderful, helping us navigate everything with so much patience. My aunt commented on how after her visits, she felt happier because of her positive presence. Thank you Sonata hospice, this experience was hard and I especially worried for my aunt but the team made the experience much more bearable. Both of them made a difficult situation feel a little lighter, and their kindness made a real difference for our family. We truly appreciated the care and respect they showed every step of the way

I googled Hospice and came across MD Choice that had some good reviews. I had no idea who I was calling but there had to have been some divine intervention pushing me to this call and this company. After a few questions I received a call from Dr De Leon who was the most compassionate and caring doctor I have come across. He sensed my immediate need, came straight out to the house, assessed my mother and went himself to the pharmacy to pick up the needed medications. He knew the urgency and took it upon himself to do all the footwork. He obtained the needed comfort medication, stabilized my mother and allowed my mother to pass peacefully all within a matter of hours from making that initial call. When she did pass that evening, he again, arranged for everything from the pronouncing to the calls according to the pre-arrangements. Without MD Choice and the connection with Dr De Leon, I don't know how I would have been able to handle the situation. His immediate response on a Sunday, his Taking control of the situation and quick actions made such a difference in the final few hours my mother had. If you find yourself in a situation like this and needing someone to help in this time, I highly recommend MD Choice and Dr De Leon. I am forever grateful to MD Choice and Dr De Leon for acting so quickly and with such caring and love in this terrible time of need. Not only were they able to provide significantly more daily visits from their team of nurses and aids than the other options we considered, but they were incredibly responsive, efficient, and helpful with every question or request we had--and that includes their 24/7 on-call team. Cheryl, the RN Case Manager, in particular, was a godsend. It was a huge relief to be able to rely on them so thoroughly from day one. They delivered everything we needed within hours of getting the paperwork done; and both Cheryl and an aide were there for the last few hours my brother was alive--providing support and care. We really can't recommend them highly enough!

My mother was cared for by Sutter Hospice. They denied her wound care (said they didn't provide it…read moreon hospice, which was a falsehood). They discharged her from hospice despite her losing weight, a bad heart, a big bedsore and she died two weeks later without hospice care. If I had the energy I would file charges against them. They actually have a non medical administrator take call (as a supervisor, he is not a nurse or doctor) on the weekends, which is unethical as well as illegal. They don't care about patients and will deny care if it costs too much. However, the hospice nurses do care and do the best the can. Many have left because of the difficulty in providing good care due to their management attitudes. I am sorry that the nurses have to deal with such an awful for profit organization. Avoid this hospice.

But if you have any issues before 9 am, after 5 pm, or weekends, you can forget being helped. A 2 am frantic call for direction in a critical situation resulted in a response which was flat out unnerving, on top of all that was going on when faced with the horrors of the dying process of a loved one. Now almost 2 years later I am receiving bills for services they authorized and later denied to pay. Even the home care staff advised me to find another agency but there was so much urgency and stress I couldn't see my way through making the change. It would not even deserve the one star if it weren't for the dedicated nurses.

And there were times when we didn't know exactly what to do as her condition changed and we could pick up the phone and call them and they were always there for us so you can in the middle of the night and one last thing I need to point out they have an amazing volunteer Service and the volunteer assigned to my mom was just to her. Once treatment was not an option he was referred to home hospice and they quickly enrolled him and began providing comfort care. They made sure he had all the equipment he needed to be comfortable. This included medication, O2, bed etc... Unfortunately my dad passed away within 2 weeks of home hospice but I believe he died comfortably and with no pain. They were always responsive when I called and when my dad passed, they helped me give him his last bath. In these tough times we think that we are the only ones that need attention, I get it, I've been there but they did a marvelous job and I'm pleased with the support we received. Thank you all!!!

The intake nurse called me on Friday and left a voice message that she would like to see my mom the following morning. She also texted me at the same time. I immediately called my mom to confirm and called her back in less them 10 minutes. No answer so I left a voice mail and a text to confirm Saturday. No response even though i returned the message immediately. The following evening she text again asking to come on Monday. I left a voice message and asked her to call me to schedule to avoid another miscommunication. No reply ever. My mom never got the home health she was ordered. No follow up whatsoever by the nurse or the company. It's a good thing I am a proactive daughter and followed up right away with her primary care physician. A more vulnerable patient without an advocate would be left high and dry.
