Beautiful House, but Don't Expect Much Help with a Pest Scare
I tried to leave this review on the Beachfront Only website, as well VRBO, from whom, we originally reserved the house. Neither would allow the review. Don't trust their reviews!!!
We rented 1023 South Pacific Street , Oceanside, CA from Beachfront Only Vacation Rentals for a week for a family reunion and to celebrate my husband's 80th birthday. The house itself is fabulous -- a beautiful home in a beautiful location. We so enjoyed spending a week with the ocean right out the door and the sound of the waves constant company.
However, I cannot recommend Beachfront Only as a rental company. They really did not take care of us as they should have; when we needed them. On the morning of August 9, the day of the birthday party, our kids woke up in the Bikini Room covered in bites that looked like they might be bed bug bites. We've dealt with a bed bug infestation before, so we know how serious it can be. We called immediately, sent photos as requested, and were told someone would come out that very day. No one arrived until late afternoon, and then only after repeated calls and an unanswered text. The person who showed up was a young man with a few traps and a poison spray. He said he knew little about bed bugs. We took the traps and declined the poison. We were not comfortable spraying poison in the home in which we were staying. He promised to return with more traps -- but he never did. I had fully expected that a company of this size would be able to provide a bed bug expert inspection on the first day of a concern. This is the urgency of bed bugs. This company did not offer an expert inspection at any time, nor seem to take the problem with the gravity that it required.
Since the company was not able to reassure us on day one that we were not infested with bed bugs, we spent the end of the day dealing with the issue. Kids were relocated from their spacious room and bathroom to cramped, "boring" rooms, suitcases emptied and put outside, all clothes put through the a hot wash and dry. We continued to try to get help from the company throughout the evening when we were also trying to celebrate the birthday, but to no avail. The final text from them was a curt "The traps have been placed." That was the full extent of their help. We looked up the traps, and they are widely judged to be ineffective. We tried to celebrate, but mostly talked about bedbugs. At the end of the evening, realizing we were totally on our own, we were able to arrange a pest inspection from Terminex for the following day.
The inspection brought great news -- almost certainly no bed bugs; likely mosquitoes or sand fleas caused the bites. But we'd already lost a day, and the kids never moved back into their room. They called it the Bug Room, and they did not trust it. Everyone was more crowded and cramped. The kids sometimes slept on the couches; the master bathroom was overtaken by teens.
The pest control number posted on a printed poster in the garage was also wrong --when I called the number the person who answered said she had absolutely nothing to do with Beachfront Only and this misprint had been in place for a long time. She had received many calls over this time and had requested the company to please change the number. Apparently to no avail.
Other issues that came up: We knew it was trash day, as the neighbors were putting out the trash. The company said that someone would come to take out the trash but no one ever did. We put out the trash ourselves. The company said that they offered a service where we could leave our luggage in their office on check in and check out day, since our flights left us with a lot of time before check in and after check out. However, we discovered that this service was actually unreliable, and they could not guarantee that someone would be available at the office for drop off or pick up of the luggage. The sandy area out front on the ground floor was not cleaned. There were large pieces of trash, a broken umbrella, and the furniture every which way. We had to clean it ourselves for the party.
Also small but annoying things. We ran out of laundry soap and kitchen trash bags. I expected to buy toilet paper, but laundry soap?? Kitchen trash bags??
On the bright side, when we called that the blender was not working, they delivered a new blender within 2 hours. If only they took such care with the critically important things.
After our trip, I wrote the company about these concerns and 6 days later received a generic apology, with a generic email offer of 10% off a future stay in one of their rentals. I also asked for their correct pest control number, but they did not provide it. I have written again and requested a formal, printable offer that we could save for the future. I will let you how that goes. read more
