I'm someone who processes out loud and changes my mind approximately 15 times (especially with glasses!), and they were endlessly patient and supportive through all of it. We even ended up chatting about dogs, furniture building, sewing, and hobbies--which somehow made the whole experience feel relaxed and human instead of transactional. they don't respect patient time My appointment was scheduled for 11:45 AM. When I initially booked the visit, I clearly informed the staff member that I had an important meeting at 1:00 PM. I was assured that there would be plenty of time to complete the appointment, especially since my meeting location was only about 10 minutes away. I arrived early at 11:35 AM and was taken in at approximately 11:50 AM for an eyesight evaluation, which was completed by 12:05 PM. After that, I was left waiting in the exam room until 12:45 PM without any communication or update from staff. During this time, I could hear staff members laughing and socializing in what appeared to be a lunch break. I found it highly unprofessional to leave a patient waiting for such an extended period while staff were disengaged, without any consideration for the patient's time or schedule. Due to the delay, I was forced to leave in order to avoid being late for my important meeting. When I informed the receptionist that I needed to leave, I was asked to wait briefly. Another staff member then came out and said the doctor was ready to see me, but by that point, I could no longer stay without risking being late. I was told that someone would call me to reschedule the appointment; however, I have not received any follow-up communication. Additionally, I would like to make it clear that I do not expect my insurance to be billed for this incomplete and unsatisfactory visit. If a claim is submitted, I will dispute it. Wanted to check this place out as it was close to home.. they are a full service eye clinic where they will do all the standard tests, as well as screening tests for cancer. I believe they also do LASIK consultations as well.. We were in to just do a basic eye exams so that we can get a new prescription for glasses. Walked in, used a couple of iPads to answer a. Inch of standard checkin questions, medical history, etc. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, easy to work with. The only bad thing is the wait times can be long. Every time I have walked in the lobby is full of people. We had an appointment for 10am, and an hour and a half later we are still there waiting. read more

I have been using Beach Eye care for over 30 years and have always had very good results. However, my last 2 appointment with Dr. Barker at the Chesapeake office have not been good. My last appointment was for 10:40 am, I finally was seen by Dr.Barker @ 12:40 pm! This is not the first time this has happened. This needs to be corrected ASAP for the patient's sake. I just walked out of my eye exam for contacts. The tech who was doing the exam was so condescending. She talked to you like a kindergarten teacher or you were 2 years old. Lady, I've been getting eye exams since I was 3. I know the process. I don't need to talk to me like it's the first time I've seen the f'ing balloon or how to read the charts. Then, they have you fill out a pre-health document online. I have no history. Get in the office and they make me fill out the same f'ing thing. I have no history. Stop wasting my time. Then the girl comes in a tells me it's $150 charge for a contact fitting. Um no. I checked, and my insurance showed "up to $40" cost. Why are you charging me over $100? So I walked out at that point. Then some other tech interrupts saying she's pulling my contact insurance coverage to order. Um no. I'm not ordering through you. Why would you do that and not ask first. The doctor came in and I just said I'm sorry, but this was the worst expereince I've ever had at an eye doctor. You need to tell that tech to not talk to people like they're 2. And I'm not paying for something that I checked beforehand the out of pocket would only be $40. So it seems like you're ripping people off. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Beach Eye Care to the rescue! If you're looking for kind and knowledgeable people, these are the ones. After another local optometry business (Gontarek) said they wouldn't help me I turned to Beach Eye Care (BEC) and they came through! This is a bit long, but it's a perfect example of the power of great customer service and the impact of caring for people. I ordered a pair of frames and lenses online that turned out terrible. Once my new glasses arrived I couldn't see out of them clearly. I was hoping to find someone locally who could help me determine who should be held accountable--the people who wrote my prescription, the people who measured my pupillary distance, the people who made the lenses, or possibly me (maybe I input the wrong numbers). The first place I called (my optometrist) said they would definitely NOT help me. The second place I called, Beach Eye Care, said they'd be happy to help me. Jimmy scheduled me for an appointment time that worked for me (which was within the hour). Jimmy's help continued during my entire experience at BEC. He helped me determine that the online company used the wrong pupillary distance. I found out while I was there that BEC recently started carrying the same frame maker as the ones I had ordered online so I had Jimmy work up a price for me. While Jimmy's price was a little higher, I'd much rather give my money to a local business, especially one that obviously cares about people, so I bought them from BEC. Additionally, I found out while I was there that their price for replacing just the lenses for my husband's frames is cheaper than he was paying online so now my husband is planning to buy his lenses from BEC. Lastly, this was such a great experience and a far cry from the one with my optometrist that I'm moving my family of four to BEC for all of our eye needs moving forward. So, next year, when my insurance resets and I get the chance to buy another set of glasses... I'll be happy about spending my money with a company that deserves it. read more

I do want to call out two absolutely wonderful experiences I had from my last appointment, the technician that worked with me, Shataya - LOVED HER! It was like speaking to a good friend and I had never met her before this appointment. Also, on the glasses side of the shop, Cheena ... she's the BEST! I took my mom with me for a second opinion on choosing frames and even my mom said on the way home that she was the best person she's ever seen when going through the glasses process & my mom had worn glasses for 30 yrs. This place is wonderful! My whole family goes here to get our yearly eye exams. It's very convenient because they have an in-house optical area to try on and purchase glasses. I came in for an eye exam. Being a new client, I filled out some paperwork. I didn't have to wait long at all. The optical technician did the usual tests on my eyes. She gave me drops to dilate them. I was then brought to the exam room where the doctor gave me the exam and explained details of what was found. I then met with the lens technician and she explained (at length) my prescription, types of glasses, and the process of getting new glasses. She was a sweetheart! I needed an eye exam and this location is really close to me so I thought I'd try it out. Everyone was really nice but it was pricey since I don't currently have vision insurance. I then went to look at the eyeglasses. I liked 1 pair but it was pretty expensive - $400. I asked for something cheaper and the cheapest they could offer was a pair for $300 ish. My coworker advised I go to her eye doctor and I was able to get a pair for $180. So I don't think I will be returning to beach eye care. read more

This one stop shop is awesome. I had a great experience with my eye exam and choosing my glasses. They discovered that my eye brows had begun drooping and were impeding my vision. I guess the progression was so gradual I hadn't noticed. I qualified for a brow lift and oh my goodness, the difference it has made! Dr Kanyinda is an artist! I had no bruising and my scaring is so minor i literally have to point it out. But when i look at the before and after pictures the difference is astonishing. Well. I got glasses from them because they were closest to me. I figured they'd be a step up from my first pair of glasses from Wal-Mart. My far vision? Excellent. Their tests, which were completely different from my first eye test 2 years ago at Wal-mart, seem to have failed. I have to take off my glasses to read anything less than 5 feet away now, but I paid 350 bucks for these things so I guess this is something I must endure. It's great to be able to read street signs from more than a dozen of feet away, but having to take my glasses off to read books and my cell phone? Kinda sucks. Back to Wal-Mart I go next time. Their actual product is great (I got Laisic and my vision is perfect), but their time management and scheduling practices are not good. Everytime I've been there (3x now) I've had to wait anywhere from 45m-1.5hours before getting started or seeing the dr. For whatever reason they seem to book at absolute maximum capacity everyday and if anything gets off schedule (someone calls out, someone takes a long time etc.) their entire day is thrown off and the patients end up sitting there for a long time. read more

What a great place! Had my annual eye exam today. After more than 25 years of seeing an eye doctor every year I can say I've become a sort of expert at which doctors are worth your time and which ones need to find a new career. This place was GREAT! The staff was welcoming, prompt, and didn't act like they were in a rush to get me to the next "station". They also gave me the most thorough eye exam I've ever had. Hate the poof of air (don't we all?)? No more! Eye dilation? They have moved on from that too. They have all the latest technology, so no more putting it off! The contact lens lady worked with me for more than 30 min making sure I got exactly what I wanted, even explaining pricing and their program for purchase (which is pretty good too, and I usually buy online). She was patient and pointed out what would work for me and what may not work so well due to my personal eye issues. She knows her stuff! If you're looking for a great eye doctor, try this place. It's clean, well orgaand was an all-around beautiful office with a great staff. Great job, Beach Eye Care!! Update 11/2019 Yet again Beach Eye Care came to my rescue! We have moved from Chesapeake to Japan and no one here would sell me contact lenses at a decent price. To make matters worse, I couldn't use my insurance here (nope the NEX on base takes no insurance). I called BEC hoping they could help me, and sure enough Amber (their fabulous contact lens specialist) jumped into action. She took my prescription from here, ordered my lenses, and shipped them to me within a week. They also took my insurance and made sure the box survived the military postal system! Beach Eye Care has the BEST Oculoplastics Surgeon in Dr. Nathan Kanyinda M. D. Dr. Kanyinda performed my Blepharoplasty and did an amazing job! I followed the aftercare instructions using cold compresses every hour and slept with my head elevated which kept the swelling and bruising down and pain, there was no pain. I recommended Dr. Kanyinda at Beach Eye Care to everyone I know. The man is an artist!!! read more

I went to this location for a routine exam. When I got there, I told the lady that I was a type one diabetic, and she insisted on doing the diabetic exam and said that my insurance would put in an authorization after the fact for it. They did not. I have since been charged for a diabetic exam instead of the free exam that I was supposed to be getting. I have called multiple times to try to discuss this. And No one ever calls me back and now my bill is way overdue. The bill that I should not have had to begin with, and I finally had to pay it so that my Credit didn't go down I would not recommend this place to anyone. I did tell the lady that I did not believe my insurance would do it that way because I have Tricare, but she insisted they've done it many times before. My insurance basically laughed when I called them so they're doing something definitely not legal also. read more

I would have been a new patient. My appt was at 11:10 but was instructed to be there at 11 am - I was. Completed the paperwork and I-pad question which some questions were ridiculous. Was called back and saw the clinical staff member. Went to perform the Optos test but she could not find my account so she went to manually enter my information but still didn't work. Was told I could come back on another day. She took me to the exam room where I sat for over 45 minutes. I found the clinical staff and asked them when I was going to be seen. she stated - he's really bad at this. Great, I thought. She said she would look into this for me. She came back and stated "I can't tell you when you will get seen as he has 2 patients before me." Needless to say I left. If staff knows that a Dr. always runs behind, why schedule patients back to back. There seemed to be another patient who was upset with being seen as she kept getting up and looking around. I have been going to Beach Eye Care for almost 10 years now (maybe more, i've lost count!). I have always been greeted by friendly staff. This time around, I was first seen by Erika who checked my current prescription. She was so great and patient during the exam. I was then sent to Nina who checked my contacts and was ready to answer any questions I had (which there were a few because my prescription changed.). She also offered me some free samples of contact solution! Next, I saw Dr. Ritenour who is always so personable and easy to talk to. Lastly, I saw the staff member who fitted me for my new glasses (didn't catch her name). She was very patient and helped me decide which glasses would be best for me (I ended up sticking with my old frames). Searching for new eye care place as old Dr. Closed. B E. C. Takes my insurance VSP. Have a nice selection of frames, convenient location. Ordered glasses. Love them, except for nose pads. They miscalculated my copay, and overcharged me by $40.00. Brought it to their attention and received a credit card refund. BEC contacted me about my nose pads, and offered to provide new frames that do accept silicone nose pads. unfortunately, Ray Ban doesn't make their standard push-on nose pads in silicone, so they have generic 2 tab ones, that don't fit my frame, (tried them and they rotate, and sometimes get the metal part next to the nose instead of the pad.) Nor does any Ray Ban frame i found in the store have silicone nose pads. Instead they are making new lenses for an older pair of Ray Ban sun glasses that came with silicone nose pads when they were new. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee by BEC if the frame gets broken during the lens replacement procedure. Oh well, their heart is in the right place. read more

I loved that I didn't need to get my eyes dilated. They have newer technology that some so I was able to choose that.

After searching for an eye Dr for a while, I have found Dr. Ritenour at Beach Eye Care to be extremely patient and helpful. I have a degenerative eye issue at a young age and also require multi focal contacts which can be tricky. She is extremely informative and the rest of the staff are professional and always greet me like they care. I have been to 3 locations for Beach Eye care - First Colonial, Holland Rd, and Cedar Rd and although they are all great, Cedar Rd is my favorite and doesn't usually have a long wait. read more

Doctors and service are good but watch out for the billing practices here. You go in for an eye exam (I am entitled to one of those per year and they are paid in full by my vision plan) and they submit under your regular medical plan which has deductibles etc. Bottom line, their claim is higher and you pay more out of pocket. This has happened twice even though I tell them when I go in to make sure they submit under the annual eye exam option. And to make it worse, when you challenge them they try to justify it because they found something medical related during the exam. read more
