Finally got to come here. Based off the great reviews and I'm a sucker for a good donut. The good: Very friendly family vibe in here. The owner is very nice and welcoming. Lots of varieties to choose from. Donuts. Bagels. Croissants. Muffins. Sandwiches. Coffee. Breakfast plates and more. Has about 4 tables for seating areas - Spaced out. Prices are very reasonable. We had a cheddar bagel with eggs, bacon and cheese. this was very very good. We loved it. And would come back for it and come back to try it on their croissants also. The so-so: The donuts. I know. So sad. I was really looking forward to it. But. It was very mediocre. Didnt taste very fresh like it was made day of. We arrived around 11am. We had chocolate frosting, strawberry frosting with sprinkles and a regular glazed donut. All 3 was like.. 2.5 stars. So unfortunately when I come back, it probably wont be for the donuts but more so for the bagel sandwich. read more

The crullers are nearly identical to when the shop was on Hartford Ave. I miss the convenience in Old lyme but these donuts are worth the 15 min drive to pick up for the family. The new owner is all about making money. Since he bought the place, he has raised the price of a single donut from $1.25 to $2.00 per each donut. He recently raised his price for a half-dozen donuts from $7.50 to $9.00 for a half-dozen. (but I learned today, the hard way, that he raised it again) Today, I went in to buy a half-dozen donuts, and ordered them. The lady (the owner's wife) put my six donuts in the box and took my $20 bill. When she rang me up, she said $10, and handed me a $10 bill for change. I pointed to the sign above her head and told her that her sign said $9.00 for a half-dozen donuts. She replied that they had changed the price in the computer. I told her that it is illegal to advertise a lower price, then charge a higher price at checkout. She refused to give me any additional change back and walked away. I told her that she had no business ethics, and did not know how to treat customers. She was rude and would not reply to me. Instead, she got a magic marker and changed the sign to read $10 for a half-dozen donuts. When I got home, and opened the box, I found that the lady had put the one chocolate frosted donut on top of all the others, so the frosting was all stuck to the inside lid of the box, and there was hardly any still left on the donut. Unbelievable! I will reiterate what other people have always posted in that the owners always try to upsell the customers because they just want to make more money, but all they manage to do is to be annoying. Yes, when their donuts are fresh they are great & delicious. That's why I was still willing to go and buy some, even though their prices have increased significantly. But I have also bought donuts there that are not fresh, and I can tell when I see piles of the same exact donuts when I have visited the store on multiple consecutive days, and can feel and taste the crispy-ness when eating donuts that are days old. So, if you go, just hope that you're actually buying fresh donuts on that day. read more

As a rule I'm not a donut person, but let me tell you the jelly donuts with powdered sugar here are to die for! I came in on a Saturday around 12:30pm with my Mom. It was our first time here and the woman behind the counter was so friendly and helpful. She even gave my Mom a donut on the house being that it was her first time and she was getting a 1/2 dozen jelly donuts. I got one jelly donut for myself and ate it there. It was so fresh and delicious and the coffee was great as well. I then got one of the chocolate glazed donuts to take home. I tried a small piece of it later that night... First and foremost, this is THE place to go for gluten-free donuts. You will not believe they are gluten free they are so damn good. It's one type - a classic thick candy donut, but it's so good my son wanted it for his birthday. The new ownership, 2 years ago increased the price per dozen from 14.00 to 18.00 then a few months later to 20.00. just stopped in yesterday, the price is now 24.00+tax. If I could give NEGATIVE stars, I would! A business run with POOR ownership and lack of thereof! My sister's wedding dessert table was ruined yesterday when the wedding coordinator came up to me (the matron of honor) and told me the speciality donuts weren't delivered for her big day. My sister, who had been planning for her wedding for months, had designed a donut wall to display specialty donuts for her dessert table. She had gone several times and had multiple emails back and forth with the owner Theodore about this occasion and was told these donuts would be delivered at her venue literally 10 minutes away. This never happened. When the wedding coordinator called multiple times, the business was closed and the voice mailbox full. The coordinator had to think fast and get 3 dozen donuts from a Dunkin Donuts to make up for this. The following day, my sister contacted Beach Donuts and was told by an employee, Theodore wasn't in yet and he was aware of the error and was angry with the driver, and also that he would contact her. After several hours of NO response, my sister called back and got nothing but silence AND that he knew NOTHING about the "mistake" and couldn't give an explanation as to what happened. DON'T EVER do business with this place. Poor ownership and lack thereof the "mistake" if that's what you call it for ruining a dessert table at a wedding. KARMA will return. You're better off going to a Dunkin Donuts to get what you want! read more

Enjoyed this cute little shop while on a short getaway. The coffee was tasty and we had delicious breakfast sandwiches. My husband enjoyed his donuts. They were much better than local chains. I don't even like donuts and I wanted one lol. The gluten free glazed donuts were amazing according to a very excited 10 year old who is always sad that gluten free donuts are a rare commodity, especially one that doesn't taste like sawdust... the coffee was good too. The old owner was crochety and tired, but the doughnuts were always consistent. Since the new owner took over, I went to the place two times and I won't go back. First, the coffee was the worst garbage I ever drank. It tasted like the same grounds were run at least 4 times through. If you are a doughnut shop, your coffee better be good, or even outstanding. Secondly, the doughnuts that I ordered did not make it into the box, the owner just grabbed random doughnuts that he had the most of, and then he tried to up sell me to buy more. This is annoying. Give me what I ordered, stop trying to nickel and dime me. Cannot stand this. Plus I did not notice that the doughnuts were NOT the flavors that I had ordered until I got home. He's just smiling and throwing them in the box and trying to prod if I have a family, kids, etc. Listen, I just want the doughnuts. Thirdly, the bottom of the box was handed to me dirty with sugar, and who knows what junk and stained my car seat. Fourthly there were some doughnuts on display that looked like a fourth grader glazed. No joke. The owner may be nice, but he does not pay attention to the order, and he just cares about up selling. I just want some doughnuts, I don't need a personal connection. I do not enjoy sharing my personal business with a retail establishment. And lastly, the doughnuts still tasted really good, but I just want to come in, get the correct order, I want to be charged the correct price and I want to leave. Not worth the hassle and stress. I found Beach Donuts in a Google maps search. Beach Donuts was exactly what I thought Beach Donuts might be. I was delighted to discover that, for starters, It was not on the beach. It was in a small strip mall, away from the quaint New England downtowns of Clinton and Madison, in a spot that was probably just reeds and trees 40 years ago. Beach Donuts was not a colorful, glamorous hotspot. Half the plastic sign was ripped off, and it looked like it had been that way for at least a decade or two, glumly displaying its half-hearted "ach nuts" to Subaru outbacks and Ford explorers going forty toward Hammonasset. Almost as if, in the most New England way possible, you weren't supposed to find Beach Donuts if you did not already know about Beach Donuts. There were no lines out the door, there were no colorful anything anywhere. The little strip mall it resided inside had not been painted or stained since 1985. Even the driveway was come as you are. Walking in exceeded my expectations. The motif of rundown, old, "neighborhood locals only" chic manifested in the two round wood restaurant tables from 1978, and the counter that was gloriously brown. Everything was brown. The entire experience was brown. Looking behind the counter of the selection of donuts, I knew I had come to the right place, because every single donut was also brown. There were light brown donuts and dark brown donuts and really dark brown donuts. Sure, there is a strawberry frosted in there, but the strawberry frosting was pallid, wan and sprinkle-less. And I think to myself about the New Haven burger staple, Luis' Lunch, where if you ask for ketchup they will throw you out. I almost feared asking if they had a strawberry frosted with sprinkles on it. I feel like the mention of sprinkles would have sent me packing. I got half a dozen donuts for nine dollars. Not cheap, but I figured it would be worth it. After all, they had a sour cream doughnut, which was in addition to the buttermilk doughnut. I'm rarely in a place that sells donuts where there are more than one variety of bitter or sour donuts. I got myself a Boston Cream, a chocolate glazed, a sour cream, an apple cider, a sugar doughnut, and a Bavarian Cream. The entire box was brown. It was The spiritual antithesis of a Dunkin. I was in heaven. I considered getting a coffee, but I have experienced in my travels as a New England pastry connoisseur, that for whatever strange reason, most bakeries have no idea how to make a good cup of coffee. I will stand by this wisdom to my grave. For me, the sweetness of the donut requires a bitter complement; Something strong to wash away lingering traces of cream filling and frosting and sugar. I need a decently strong cup of coffee, and inevitably I find that New England bakeries make coffee as if they are rationing for the Great War. It is like an essence of a coffee drink; A lingering waft of a church basement coffee during social hour. It is not the kind of coffee that I would hope for - the kind that erases the mouth's memory of the sweetness so I can return to it and enjoy it once again. I can't express how important this is to me. If I ever figure out how to manage my time to do 11 different careers at once, I will have a bakery that makes amazing donuts and chocolate chip cookies, with knock-your-socks-off coffee. Instead, I took my half dozen donuts - donuts so large that six of them stuffed a normal sized dozen box. I took those donuts and drove 2 miles down route one to a Dunkin drive-in, where I waited in line for 15 minutes in my car, listening to Janelle Monáe being interviewed on NPR in order to get their dark roast. Do not coffee snob me. I know that Dunkin' Donuts coffee is not good coffee. But it is acceptable coffee, and it is just enough levels above bad New England bakery coffee, but just common man enough as to not be pretentious. Driving up, I told the woman at the speaker box that I'd like a large black dark roast. She told me they didn't make dark roast anymore. They have midnight. Whatever you'd like to call it, I said. I'd like that. Beach Donuts Are delicious, hearty, complex in their flavor, and brown. The sour cream donut was so rich that it took me an hour and a half to eat a second donut. The Bavarian cream was great. The cream was not sickeningly sweet, but milky and thick. The sugar donut was the only raised donut that I got, and I was surprised that it's buoyant yet dense texture. Almost like an edible memory foam mattress. That is not a bad thing. I have three donuts to go, and about a quarter cup of coffee that is now lukewarm on my countertop. I'm thankful for finding Beach Donuts. It was the perfect "cranky old brown New England hole in the wall in the middle of a strip mall that was built in 1970" find that I had so longingly desired for. read more

Tiny donut shop. They mostly deliver to coffee shops and local businesses so the inside isn't much to look at, except for lots of boxes and one cash register. No coffee, no beverages, and no table seating. $9 for a dozen, which is slightly higher than Dunk'n Donuts. Unlike Dunk'n Donuts, the donuts aren't filled entirely with air. Nice to see there are still independent donut shops operating in the age of mass marketed donut franchises. read more

I got the cookies n' cream donut, which was excellent - oreo topping with boston-creme like filling. My husband got the vanilla sprinkled and apple cider and I purchased some other cake donuts for co-workers. We split a decaf coffee, which was great as well. Wow. That was the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. I'm still trying to put my finger on a flavor, maybe from the bread? I had a sausage, egg, and cheese on a hard roll. They toast the roll, and it's PERFECT. Two eggs, superb sausage patty, and a white cheese (provolone? I'm not sure). So good. I have to have one again. I just have to. The donuts were great too, although truth be told, I'm not picky about donuts, apart from thinking Krispy Kreme is insanely overrated. I had a cinnamon jelly donut that was delightfully soft, and a chocolate cake donut that I loved but wished was slightly fresher. They open at 5:30a or something crazy like that, and we didn't show up until maybe 11:00a, and I imagine the early morning donuts are a different story. To their credit, they were out of a certain donut, and the cashier offered to go back and make one just for me. A quest to find what I think are the best doughnuts in the region, brought me to Beach Donut Shop in Clinton on Sunday, November 19th. For consistency, I always order the same three favorite doughnuts of mine. A powdered jelly, a glazed cruller, and an apple fritter. These are some very good doughnuts. The jelly doughnut was filled with a good quality jelly, was very tasty, but the inside was a little dry, and the doughnut had a rather thick crust, like it had been overcooked somewhat. The same was true of the glazed cruller, but both were really good otherwise. In fairness, that may have been an issue with just that batch, but I can only rate based on my experience here on this day. Now, the good news. The apple fritter was FRIKKIN' AWESOME! It was not what I'd call a traditional apple fritter that's a large blob of dough with apple bits in it, cooked, and glazed. This one was a smaller blob of dough cooked, and sliced horizontally, filled with a huge amount of diced apples in an apple sauce filling, and dusted with a light coating of powdered sugar. It did not suffer the same dryness and thick crust of the two other doughnuts I tried. The coffee served here is excellent. My high water mark in comparing all these doughnuts is Neil's Donuts in Wallingford, and it remains so, by a large margin. But unfortunately, Neil's doesn't offer apple fritters, so this one was, by far, the best I've had to date. The apple fritter alone raised my rating by one star. I understand that doughnut joints, like pizza joints, can bring out some very strong opinions, and this is just mine. My quest will continue...... Very disappointed in Beach donut, and it's owners. My sister in law built a donut wall and planned all her wedding desserts around the specialty donuts she ordered with Beach donut. She drove out to CT twice to taste them, choose the flavors she wanted. She ordered dessert menus with the flavors on them, it was going to be absolutely perfect! Fast forward to the day of the wedding... Everything is set up and the venue is waiting on Theodore and beach donuts to deliver the donuts. Nothing comes, no one answers the calls from the event planner, and their Voicemail box is FULL! She has multiple emails with the owner, about the event, and what was expected.. He took zero responsibility for them not being delivered. She had to call him twice the day after the wedding to find out what happened. So instead of the beautiful wedding donut wall she imagined, it was empty... Don't ever use them for an important day, they clearly don't care. Disappointed is an understatement! read more

These are the most delicious donuts when fresh. I am not a sweets person, but this are exceptional. My go to is the sour cream or cake crullers. You have about 25 flavors to choose from and they open early everyday. Get there early on summer weekends if you don't want to wait in line. The actual coffee shop is very basic and has about 8-10 small tables. Everything is counter service and they have a small selection of breakfast sandwiches, omelets, and other breakfast items, coffees, etc. if you decide to stay and eat in you will smell like a fried donut the rest of the day, but you can brag to everyone about how good it was. read more
