We moved here recently and are avid and experienced scuba divers. We have taken regs in for service, tanks to be filled, asked about guided dives and have been met with rude and unhelpful people at every location. They never call you back - they don't even call you when your service order is completed. If you go in to ask questions, they are rude and dismissive. Stay away - there has to be something better in the area. We are considering taking all of our business to Redondo Beach, which is a bit of a trek, but well worth it not to deal with this crappy company. read more

Disappointed by this shop. Came to scope out their inventory and hopefully purchase some upgrades. Their items were sloppily placed against the walls of the store with little effort in organization. No price tags on anything, so it was impossible to make purchase decisions without asking how much each individual item was. To top it off, there was a single employee on staff who seemed severely undertrained and wasn't able to answer any questions. It's possible he may not even have any diving experience based on how little he seemed to know. Not blaming the dude for his inexperience, but I think the fact that he was left alone to run the whole store is telling of how this local chain operates. Negative 1 Star - I brought two tanks to Beach Cities Scuba for hydro and visual testing, along with placing an order for over $300 worth of equipment. After three weeks of complete silence, I followed up only to find out that nothing had been done. My tanks were never picked up for service, and none of the items I ordered ever arrived. I took the initiative to contact the company they contract with for tank servicing, and was told that Beach Cities Scuba had stopped paying their bill, so pickups were halted. Not only is that completely unprofessional, but no one at the shop ever informed me or returned any calls or messages. Apparently, they're going through an ownership change but I didn't know that meant shutting down all customer service. That's no excuse for ignoring paying customers and leaving gear and orders in limbo. The lack of communication, transparency, and basic accountability is astounding. This kind of negligence needs to be reported to the Better Business Bureau. I will never shop here again, and I don't recommend anyone else does either. Beach Cities Scuba has clearly shown they do not care about their customers--and at this point, I honestly don't know how they're still in business. read more

I used to come by beach cities with my buddies but was left with a bad taste in my mouth after reading the recent reviews from others. It was honestly super discouraging to go here because of it but I decided to just go back anyway since it's so close to home. It turns out, there was just so many changes happening and a new owner stepping in. I'm glad I gave beach cities another chance to see past the rough edges. Melissa was working when I came in. Such a sweet gal who was so helpful and knowledgeable. She really made me feel valued and assured me that there were no stupid questions and I can freely ask my huge list of gear and dive site questions. They have also made a MAJOR change to their interior of the shop. I feel like I can really walk around and explore their merchandise without feeling so claustrophobic. Definitely will keep returning back to beach cities with their great staff and huge inventory. There are becoming less and less shops around and our local dive shops are the livestock of keeping our sport alive so lets all keep supporting them as they have gotten back on their feet and serve our dive community! read more

After the last experience with eco dive center, I decided to come to these dive store and it was the right decision. All the crew at the dive store was very helpful and the instructor (Ryan) was very experienced and very knowledgeable. He is very friendly and was very patient with my kids and me. I love this dive store because it is very close to my house and they have a lot of diving equipment available unlike eco dive center...they have to order the equipment I need and I need to go back and pick it up or they can send it to me. Compare to beach cities scuba...I can get it right away from the shop. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who want to get the diving equipment or want to get Open Water certification. read more

Private lessons with Ryan are the way to go! I came to Beach Cities Scuba after meeting their staff at The Scuba Show. All of them were so friendly, and knowledgeable. I had previously started taking scuba classes at a different dive shop that is no longer in business due to shady practices, needles to say I had a horrible experience at that other dive shop. I had a lot of anxiety when I came to Beach Cities. I signed up for the group class, but that really wasn't for me. My first day in the pool with the group class didn't go well for me and I ended up sitting in the store crying my eyes out. The office staff was so patient and kind with me. I can't remember the girls name, but she was so sweet. She immediately texted Ryan and told him about me, while at the same time telling me about him. She was encouraging, and told me not to give up. She said Ryan is the guy to teach me and get me certified. I really wanted to do this, so I contacted Ryan. Please, pay the extra money for private lessons. It's so worth it. From my first communications with Ryan on email, I could tell he was different than all the others. He asked me what my fears were, what the problems I had were, which no one seemed to care about before. He assured me that if I wanted to scuba, he would get me there. And he did! I am now certified and I am excited again about scuba diving! He was so patient, everything was done at MY pace. He didn't rush me, but he also pushed me where I needed to be pushed. He was not going to let me fail. Scuba diving involves life support. Why would you NOT pay for top instruction? I will be contacting Ryan again for further classes. We did all boat dives as I am afraid of the beach dives due to my past bad experience. I highly recommend for anyone considering taking classes, to please sign up for private lessons with Ryan. Nothing beats individual attention. Nothing! Do it! I can't say enough good things about him or this shop, as well as the amazing crew on the Riviera dive boat they use! It's your standard dive shop. But I'm not a fan of the place. They have an attitude that makes you feel like you're burdening them as soon as you walk in. When you first walk in, look to your left. Because there might be a person hiding behind a computer in that corner, probably working on something more important than you. I've walked in twice, and felt that way both times. So many things went wrong with this location. Basically you're treated like a dollar bill, with mediocre customer service. Ten mintues into our first day of Scuba class, we're all walked straight to the cash register, but not before first being told by the witty Navy Seal Instructor, "A dive computer should be your 1st purchase!" How about we pass the class first. lol interesting but I assure you there's more and I won't share it all as I'm sure I'll soon see them on a dive. It was also a little uncomfortable when I was speaking to another instructor, who had no problem with sharing with me that the guy who originally helped me was on his way to being fired. Yikes definitely no team work there, and I thought only women gossiped anyways then annoyed that I didn't purchase my gear from them, he immediately suggested I return it and he would give me a discount well how about when I came to sign up for the class how about they took the time then, sat me down sized me up with fins, gloves, snorkel and mask, No! instead I was handed the PADI package and basically instructed.to study and have all five chapters done before the first day of class. I recived no phone call before class, I mean gee if I want to boost sales and get every student to buy from my shop, I'm going to check in with them, I'm going to see where they're at in their chapters, I'm going to see if they have any questions but I'm not an instructor, I'm just someone who wants to dive. Then at our first confined water 8 students showed up to the pool when there were only 5 in the class obviously crowded as I stepped on the students fins to the left of me and every time I turned my tank would hit the student to my right of me. That night was a complete disaster two of us were dismissed, including me, and I mean dismissed. After that bs I finally called to voice my concerns, the guy over the phone was apologetic rightfully so which it's customer service 101 but he was honest and told me it was basically out of his hands nothing he could do, but referred me to an email so I emailed and basically I paid more cash to get a private instructor for an hour and a half or so and then I waited three weeks to do my first open water which was a complete failure finally annoyed I pulled my paperwork out of there I went to a different shop honestly I've had a few friends at work who want to do scuba and I strongly have advised them against this shop! It's a small scuba community in Orange County, actually one of my co-workers raved about the shop when he found out I was using them but when I shared with him what the witty Navy SEAL instructor commented, he was pissed, he suggested I even report him. Anyways when the money is more important then what you love doing for a living and have no patience to teach somebody then you have no business working with people! I gave them a three star, only because I really liked my private instructor. He had patience with me, he saw where I struggled and worked with me, just really sucked that my open water dive was much later. Update reply to he's response : Thank you for reaching out to me on Yelp, but if you reread my review, it's my experience and after forking out a couple hundred dollars, you too would have worked with the dive shop to pass and get certified. When my bf who's GUE heard of my experience at my first confined water, he was pissed but I chose to suck it up to try and finish trust me I wanted to be done with your shop and the only reason you "helped" me waa because I paid more you didn't help me for free you didn't apologize for my experience, you worked with me to schedule me in when I paid, again I was just a dollar bill. Review your camera in your pool area, you'll see how impatient and frustrated your instructor becomes when he's over booked with eight students to one instructor. read more

My sister in law and her husband completed their certification here; and referred us here. I'm so freaking glad my husband and I completed our PADI certification through these guys! I wasn't a complete fan of the idea of scuba diving. I mean, if you were meant to breathe under water, you'd have been born with gills! (My husband was the one who convinced me, he was more gung-ho about it. All in the name of love, right? LOL) So when the first day of classroom training came around, you bet I put myself and my husband in the front row of the classroom. I was NOT going to chance it by missing a single detail of the class. Our instructor, Bill Carroll, was AWESOME. I'm sure the other instructors are fantastic as well, but he truly went above and beyond. Bill's patience level is incredible and his sense of humor throughout the course really kept my spirits high. You really have to put your time in by reviewing the book and DVD. You have to pick up the course material in advance as well, so there's no excuse for procrastination! Our first Monday/Tuesday evening session flew by. The first Monday class is straight book review and testing. The first Tuesday session was a mix of finishing up book review and final test and then..... SWIM TEST! I forgot what the requirement was, but you had to swim 22 laps in their pool. Didn't sound too bad at first but you had to swim to one end AND back for it to count as 1 lap. You can't take a break, hold onto the sides, or put your feet down during this test. I just about walked out of the pool on my 5th lap! But, I completed it. Don't let your guard down though. Just when you thought you're done, Bill told us we had to tread water for 10 minutes. I kind of wanted to punch my husband in the throat at this point. My pool dives 1 and 2 went pretty uneventful as it can be - but I was exhausted after each class. Bill took his time to show us the skills we were going to be tested on, and waited til no end until we could perform the skill. We were in the pool for 5 hours the first night (6p-11p... when the classes are only scheduled for 6-9) and 6 hours the second day! (6p - midnight) He pretty much worked for free the second day. I'm completely grateful for that, as the next step was our open water dives in the OCEAN. (internally screaming my head off) Right when you plunge off from the boat, you really don't have time to think and you put to use what you've learned into action right away. Bob and John who worked the boat were amazing and helped everyone of us get off and into the boat after every dive. We were really lucky to have Bill again on our open water dive and to see us through the whole course! Make sure to tip these guys during the open water/beach dives! They work really hard for it! read more

I know this place as Beach Cities Scuba. I went in about a year ago to purchase a mask and snorkel for snorkeling on a trip to Tahiti. The staff was very patient and allowed me to try and retry several masks before making my decision. They were very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. My wife and I went back a couple of months ago to purchase a new mask and snorkel for her before out trip to Turks & Caicos. Again they were very patient while she tried several masks and were very helpful in finding the right size for her. The equipment we bought was not inexpensive, but we are both very satisfied and are convinced that we have purchased very high quality equipment, Finally today we went in to look at fins. We explained that we were not buying today, just researching. The salesman spent over 30 minutes allowing us to try on different fins and boot combinations knowing that we were not going to buy anything today, and there was no pressure to buy. So I bought this deal from groupon and was really excited bc my husband was getting his cert at another school. Let me say that this business is a just a factory to push out certs and does not really care about your comfort level with the dive skills. Problem number one is that it takes a total of 3 meetings to get the classroom portion done and the confined dives. All of which are at night at 6 and don't end until past 9. The classroom portion was fine, boring as you would expect to be. The confined dive is where I decided to leave and go with a different scuba school. Here is why... Problem number two, the gear that they use for class is crap especially when all they sell are high priced brands! (Spent over $500 just on the basic pieces!! Mask, fins, snorkel, booties and gloves!!) I was using a weight belt! Anyways, there were 8 of us not including the instructor in a tiny pool. The instructor didn't even notice that one girl had her wetsuit inside out! Really? You could tell that the instr. was getting really frustrated with our progress and had the attitude that not everyone is cut out for this sport. Funny to say that when they have a NO RETURN POLICY, EXCHANGES ONLY!! And you are required to buy this stuff before the pool dive! So I had over $500 worth of stuff I couldn't return after my horrible experience in the pool!! (Problem number three). I wanted to quit but my husband said to switch to his school, I did and couldn't be happier!! The only reason why I gave two stars is because of one person, Jim was always super helpful and nice. I bought a Groupon to get the certification to scuba done. I was super excited. They really took the time to explain all of the gear, which is best for what kind of dive and what kind of swimmer. The classes were awesome and very thorough. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue the classes because my doctor wouldn't sign off on diving due to medical reasons. Even though they have a no return policy they were great about taking back my unused equipment for a full refund and refunded me the full cost of the class minus the book (as I'd written in it). My Girlfriend and I took PADI Scuba Diving Lessons thru Beach Cities Scuba. For the confined dives we have Shane and Greg as our instructors. These guys are good on what they are doing. Excellent instructors and very knowledgeable on Scuba Gears. Customer service in the store was excellent. During our 1st and Second Open water Dives we had Linda as our instructor. Excellent Instructor as well. On our 3rd and 4th Open Dive we have Randal Smith as our final instructor. We had great experience with Randal , he's very clear and concise and have a very enjoyable dive with him!!! The crew of the Riviera Dive Boat was excellent love those guys!! read more

My son works in the Yachting industry and was going to be home for 1 week. He needed to get his open water certification before he went back to work so I started calling local shops to see if we could get it done quickly. Most shops do group classes over the weekends and he only had one available so we needed to do a private. The other shops private classes were super expensive as well. After calling multiple shops I reached DJ at Beach Cities Scuba. I told him my issue and he said I'm pretty sure we can do it, but let me make a few calls to see if we can get it done. Within an hour he called me back and said he had a great instructor to do the private and my son could start tonight with the online portion. My son knocked out the online work and met with Ryan the next day to start his pool work. Long story short, Ryan was a great instructor and together they got it all finished and with a high level of competency. The last thing I will say is that on top of everything else DJ at Beach Cities Scuba beat everyone else's price for the private lesson! Good people, great teachers, and reasonably priced.
