The BEST SURF SCHOOL in Town! So I've been attempting to surf for years and was never able to catch a single wave. I heard of M&M through a Facebook group because originally I wanted to take my son to learn. Turns out, I ended up taking the classes. I bought a package for 5 classes, reasonably priced. Needless to say, I was surfing in no time. Mike, the instructor, is a great teacher. He will get you on that board and catching waves. He started me off with a 9' foam board and I literally stood up the first day. I got the hang of it within a few weeks and I moved on to a 9' regular board. I now been surfing for about 8 months and I'm current riding a 7'6" board. Every time I transitioned boards I'd go back to Mikey for help. He really cares about teaching you the correct form. I didn't even realize M&M Surfing School had a Yelp page. Weird. I would've given them a 5 out of 5 already! I decided to look into this surfing school from a recommendation and I'm better for it. It had been 10 years since I touched a board, let alone been in the water like that and Mike is seriously the best. He makes you feel comfortable in the water, and gives tips while you're out there. Seal Beach is also a good place to learn since it's not a coral break like on O'ahu (where I learned/first tried surfing years ago). Taking a lesson with M & M Surfing school was hands down one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It was my girlfriend and I's first time surfing, and before taking the class I figured that by the end of the first lesson maybe I would be able to stand up on my board for a second. With Mike's incredible guidance, his active awareness of each student's necessary adjustments, and overall incredibly charismatic and easy going personality, my girlfriend and I were standing on our boards and riding waves all the way down to the shore 30 minutes into our lesson. I have been learning to surf for years - and I have probably taken surf lessons in a least a dozen places around the country. M&M is hands-down the best experience. Mike and Laber are the greatest teachers you could ask for. I feel safe with them. These are the type of guys you want to learn from. I lived in the OC several years ago and tried a few of the other Surf Schools. Recently I found out M&M is by far the best! The ocean takes a lot out of you, but they showed me ways to conserve energy to save it when you need it in small ways. The instructors were great in the water and helped you overcome the psychological set backs which are the major hindrance I've noticed to getting up on the board. Their technique, patience, and encouragement helped me improve greatly! I will be going back to them if I head back down to Southern California. read more

My kids are young and they each got up on their first wave with their instructors. They were so thorough in their instructions and they took such good care of my kids out in the water. When the hurricane waves came in earlier than expected, they made sure to get my little one safely back to shore and kept him safe on what looked like enormous waves from the shore. And since the storm cut our lesson short, they offered a second lesson when the weather cleared up. The kids has a great experience and caught several waves with them. The Mike's are legends in Seal Beach. My daughter's have been taking lessons for 10 years. We live in Las Vegas but I wouldn't consider vacationing in any other beach town because of M&M Surf School. They are extremely gifted teachers and know how to get kids and teens surfing. read more

Mikey and his team are phenomenal! This is where you come if you actually want to learn how to surf. He and his team watch you and give you pointers to improve your technique and confidence over time. They have a variety of boards to play around with and have a strong sense of community here. I feel safe learning in this environment and its one of my favorite things to do when I have free time. I'd recommend M&M to anyone interested in surfing. I highly recommend this surfing school! The owner "is" a Saint! I went to watch my granddaughters & I was a little nervous at first. After 2 minutes I could clearly see they were in great hands! Wonderful teachers & expert care! When I was leaving & trying to back out of the park slot, I believe it was the owners son who made sure the kids that were walking thru the parking lot to the showers were aware of their surroundings & cars moving about. This camp was recommended to us by a few Seal Beach locals who swore it was the best kept secret in SoCal.....and they were right!! I had my daughter signed up for all kinds of camps: Girl Scout, computer camp, city camp, and for her last week of summer, M & M Surf Camp. I have to say, out of all the camps, this was by far the most fun she has had all summer. This is an entirely different kind of camp experience. No militant or rigorous schedule. It's pretty laid back and relaxed, just like the surfers who run it. There is no pressure, everything is geared towards everyone having fun, but learning at their own pace. And if you feel like relaxing for a bit and playing in the sand, you can do that too! My daughter isn't super athletic, so I had my concerns. Boy was I surprised to see her up on her board and feeling more confident than I had seen her in a while. We are definitely making this an annual event. Have to give a shoutout to the professional photographer who took many pictures of her. What a wonderful bonus to the camp! I can't say enough positive things about the M&M Surfing school. Mike is an amazing teacher and had me up on the board from the first lesson. He's patient and has the ability to explain surfing concepts in a myriad of ways until they just make sense. I don't know how he did it, but Jon Larkin was able to keep track of a dozen of us yahoos and know where everyone was all the time as we bobbed in the foam; all ages and temperaments, all abilities and comfort levels with the water. I had taken one lesson on Waikiki Beach a few years ago, and wanted more, so I arranged a little side jaunt to Seal Beach to squeeze in a lesson. Even convinced a friend of mine to give it a try as well. Mike was temporarily sidelined because he had cut his foot open delivering a skeleton and was not supposed to go in the water. Jon ably got us up on our boards by managing the timing for us, and as others have said, he is one Zen fellow. Michael Sr. was like someone you've known your whole life; just warm and welcoming and full of the most amazing stories. He is a teaching soul; a real human being. I took my boys here a while back to teach since they'd been talking about how much they wanted to surf for so long. The beach where you meet them is great and has good waves, but for shelling out $100+ dollars I was expecting more. The boards and suits they have are frankly gross especially considering all the jokes about how people pee in their wetsuits. The instruction was fairly medicore. The problem is the class size is way too big and when everyone goes in the water with little idea of what they're doing and only a few instructors to yell at them, it just doesn't work and there's more flailing and failing than actual padding and catching waves. read more
