My teenage daughter and her friend had their first surf lesson with James in Sunset Beach. From start to finish working with OneWave Surf was a breeze. Communication with Tyler setting up the lesson was quick and easy. He is very prompt in returning communications and working with me scheduling the lesson. James was awesome!! He had a great personality and was a great teacher to the kids. He gave each of them equal one to one instructional time during the lesson. The kids had a very enjoyable time and learned a lot. A couple of weeks later we were camping in the area and reached out to OneWave Surf for another lesson...this time for four teenagers. On very short notice (a couple of hours) James made time, showed up fully energetic, and had the patience and stamina to work with all 4 kids alternating turns. He actually wore them out! Our lesson: Sunset Beach with James. 1) I'm not a great swimmer, I have a brain injury, and I wasn't sure at 50 yrs old I was capable of surfing. Turns out, James made me feel safe, completely comfortable through my nervousness, and I can't wait to bring more of my friends. 2) My 14 yr old nephew was a natural, and he also loved James. My nephew was a quick young learner and James had him up and riding several waves, even on the first try! Reasons I would absolutely go with James at One Wave Surf OC again 1. SAFE 2. Exhillerating 3. Patient, knowledgeable, military experienced teacher with all the first aid knowledge you'd like for a surf instructor to have. 4. My 12 year old son and I had such a great time. The level of knowledge by our instructor was unbelievable. There wasnt a question that went unanswered. When we went out our first time there was an issue at the beach, even tho we were out there for an hour and our lesson got cut short, we received an email that day for us to reschedule the lesson. The communication was outstanding and we got our lesson rescheduled without one hick up. When we went out for our 2nd time everything went great. We really had and awesome time. My biggest fear when booking this was how comfortable we would be? But, from the first hand shake to the last high five, we were very comfortable. I had a surf lesson with James a week ago and had a great time, would definitely recommend. He was very knowledgeable while also very laid back and patiently gave me a lot of reminders when I forgot some of the tips he gave (it can be a lot to remember all at once). Myself and my boyfriend did the lesson together, and both of us were able to stand up right away. He made sure to tell us the right timing, and then also gave us enough leeway to practice on our own when we requested. I felt like we had just the right amount of time (90m) to learn while also by the end was tired from getting a lot of practice in. Keep in mind we went early (8am) on a Saturday and the waves were perfect (~2-3ft). I felt the equipment was fine and had no issues with it (though I had never surfed before so I don't have the background). read more

One Wave Surf customer service is fantastic. Coming from ATL, they worked with me and our ever changing vacation scheduling and timing...even before the vacation started. They were very quick to respond to my questions and concerns. They were very descriptive and precise on their instructions of "To Do's" and where to meet with a map and all -- that made the experience much more at ease and comfortable. Mike was my son's instructor and he was fantastic. My son loved the easy and relaxed instructions and he was able to stand up on the board on the first try! This was exactly what I needed. I recently got a long board, and all the trappings needed to become a surfer - I just had no idea how to use it, other than observation and YouTube videos. James was super-kind, helpful, knowledgable, conscientious, patient, and an enjoyable teacher. I've always been confident in the water, but for some reason - perhaps the insecurity of youth - I used to think I didn't have enough balance to be a surfer. James helped get rid of those silly thoughts and boost my confidence. In other words, he helped take the intimidation away and showed me useful skills I could use to train myself next time. Flew out to LongBeach from VA for work. I brought my 15yr old son with me to experience SoCal. Always been a dream of mine to ride a wave in CA. One Wave Surf OC and James made that happen. These guys are detailed oriented from the moment you click your mouse they are in constant contact via email complete with pricing, what to expect, maps of where to meet, and surf reports. The only people you'll find that communicate better is the military. These guys got it!!! Very detail oriented company! I bought a lesson from groupon, sent an e-mail, decided on a date, and was e-mailed instructions shortly after. Instructions were very detailed in regards to where to meet, best places/time to park, and what would be included in the lesson. Lesson includes some conceptual stuff (surf/wave vocab, safety, board anatomy, etc.), yoga/stretch, and then out to the water! Had a positive experience with Mike at Manhattan Beach. At a per-hour rate, this is one of the cheapest options for beginners (I did the math) and the lesson quality is great. My friends and I all came from out-of-state and had a blast with our first lesson. Even in the group lessons, our instructor gave us personalized and helpful 1 on 1 feedback. We went to the long beach/sunset beach area and our instructor had surveyed the waters and picked out a calmer spot for us to learn at. A brief amount of time was spent on land stretching, talking about waves, and learning proper pop-up technique, after that, it was right to the water to practice! read more

We had the best experience with One Wave Surf and our instructor James. It was my bachelor weekend and I've always wanted to try surfing but we were last minute in deciding to book and found great reviews about One Wave Surf so I made a call. Tyler went above and beyond and found a way to work us in and James came in clutch to make it happen! James was the best instructor we could have hoped for. My 11-year old son had a lesson with James at Sunset Beach about 2 weeks ago. His first lesson got cancelled due to stingrays being in the water and lots of people getting stung. James actually was one of those people stung so we were glad that the lesson for that day was cancelled! We rescheduled for the next week and everything was perfect. The booking process was easy and communication through email and text was timely. James was an excellent instructor and my son felt very comfortable with him. My 17 year old and her Aunt shared a private lesson with Danny, and it was absolutely amazing!! They had a great time and learned a lot. It was my daughter's first time surfing (we're East Coasters, and not super close to the ocean) and she was able to ride a few waves in by the end of the lesson. She cannot wait to surf again! I sent my four boys ages 10 through 15 for a lesson and they are already hooked. Mike was great with them. He was patient and very helpful. He made the boys all feel like they were capable of doing anything. They all were able to get up on their first try! I had the best experience with One Wave! As someone with a minor physical handicap, I was worried I would be too rushed in my lesson, but my one on one instructor, James, was incredible! He moved at my own pace and made sure I wasn't getting too fatigued between each ride. He was so patient, I could tell it was important to him that I had a fun time! I'm a resident of LA and have always wanted to surf. I've been taking lessons every few weeks and the instructors have been super helpful. I even got to ride multiple waves on the first day.
