This was leaps and bounds above all the others. I had walked by it last summer on a walk and immediately set a reminder in my phone to sign my son up for this summer. It isn't just how well organized it is and the fact that the kids are outside in the water learning new things and challenging themselves every day, it's the way the director/owner (and all the counselors) speak to the children. It's exactly how you'd want someone leading your child while they are away from home - they teach respect, are firm in holding the kids accountable for behavior, but all in the name of having a positive experience. We will absolutely be signing him up here next year for at least half of the summer. They offer full day and half day, we did full day (8-4), but I ended up picking him up around 2 a couple of the days just because it was so hot out. I have heard the counselors consistently encourage and actively ensure the kids drink water and reapply sunscreen and you can tell they genuinely care about each and every kid. This is only my son's third day and he's already bonded with the staff and talks about Matty (the owner) multiple times a day. He's never been on any board other than a boogie board and within 1 hour on his first day he was paddling out on his own on a paddle board. I can just see his confidence beaming from this camp. FYI, we haven't even been at the beach since covid. So, yeah... first time in the water in a while and learning how to surf. We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!

IVA was my school of choice for my son, because LB Unified refused to let my son attend his home school when we moved to another part of Long Beach. LBUSD also made the school selection and enrollment process so much more difficult that I decided to pull my child out altogether. Save the drama for your mama. In comparison, IVA had an easy enrollment and application process. I was able to contact someone from the school every time I had a question or concern. The student-teacher ratio is something LBUSD has historically fallen short on, and with IVA teachers knew my son by name. The learning environment became a small community built on pillars of intellectual virtues. As a parent, I appreciated the one-on-one communication from my child's instructors. I also enjoyed the social gatherings of parents, students and instructors, when I did have time to participate. Really, it's a private school feel without the price tag. My son was afforded opportunities he would have never had experienced in LBUSD as far as athletics and extracurricular activities such as weight lifting club, photography, and yearbook committee. Geographically, the area of the school is a little rough, but the school does have a nice outdoor area in the back for student activities away from the "distractions" of LB Blvd.

With that in mind, I wanna say I am deeply grateful for this school. They have great systems in place with low ratio and really teach the little ones a lot while they're there. I can solidly say that at two years old my daughter can count from one to 20 and sing the whole alphabet along with about 15 different nursery, rhymes and stack blocks and has very advanced fine motor and motor skills because of the school. I'm a licensed OT and always felt safe with and confident in staff. Mrs. Nali, Mrs Dhammika, and Mrs Nayana are well educated in this age group, patient, and loving. All of the staff are truly wonderful. We went from infant, to wobbler, to toddler and transitioned very well. I don't know the frequency but every time my child which class they gave me a comprehensive developmental checklist to tell me what my child was doing or wasn't doing that was on track for proper development or not and that is huge. When you're a busy parent and don't always notice some of the things that Are typical or atypical to have some professional eyes to help you understand where your child is developmentally is huge. They are CPR trained and do a great job with making sure they're fed and changed consistently. My baby never came home hungry or never was crying when I picked her up and never got diaper rash there. If you choose to be part of the little app, you will get photos of your child. Once every couple weeks in the classroom is playing with the other children. They also send little videos and they do little Halloween parades and classroom parties. The Christmas parade is precious too! The focus of MONTESSORI is self-sufficiency which as an occupational therapist I really love. She would come home and if she spilled something, she would run right away to try to clean it up. She very much wanted to learn how to do things on her own and she knew how to threw away her own trash, which was not something I taught her at home necessarily lol It truly is adorable and prepares your baby for a successful road ahead with school and life beyond. My only thing I would change is having carpet or soft floor in the infant room vs hard floors. Other than that, everything really is done perfectly, and they have a lovely little outdoor space that they take them to a few times a day where they can ride bikes and do the slide and all of that. Learning how to operate in a group and look at what the rest of the group is doing and follow along is a critical life skill, and my baby has transitioned to preschool seamlessly because of her experience at this other school. In fact, one of her current teachers used to work at Wee care as well and has positive things to say.
