This was leaps and bounds above all the others. I had walked by it last summer on a walk and immediately set a reminder in my phone to sign my son up for this summer. It isn't just how well organized it is and the fact that the kids are outside in the water learning new things and challenging themselves every day, it's the way the director/owner (and all the counselors) speak to the children. It's exactly how you'd want someone leading your child while they are away from home - they teach respect, are firm in holding the kids accountable for behavior, but all in the name of having a positive experience. We will absolutely be signing him up here next year for at least half of the summer. They offer full day and half day, we did full day (8-4), but I ended up picking him up around 2 a couple of the days just because it was so hot out. I have heard the counselors consistently encourage and actively ensure the kids drink water and reapply sunscreen and you can tell they genuinely care about each and every kid. This is only my son's third day and he's already bonded with the staff and talks about Matty (the owner) multiple times a day. He's never been on any board other than a boogie board and within 1 hour on his first day he was paddling out on his own on a paddle board. I can just see his confidence beaming from this camp. FYI, we haven't even been at the beach since covid. So, yeah... first time in the water in a while and learning how to surf. With great instructors anything is possible and it is never too late to learn something new. In the water they made sure we were safe and guided us thoroughly. My wife was able to stand on the board on her first wave. It was really fun. I needed more help and they were always there to coach us right along. I came back to Huntington Beach 2 weeks later with my boys and booked private lessons for all 3 of us per recommedation from the owners. They matched the instructors with each of us very well. Mine was 6'3" and could easily handle holding my board and helping me figure it out. My 10 yr old instructor had him surfing within 45min on day 1. The young lady instructing my 7yr old adjusted board, and had him up and surfing on day 2. At 56, with 3 knee injuries, including a torn meniscus, was able to stand up finally on day 3, 4 times, in some frothy (yet not too big) waves. The beach area is an ideal learning platform as it has no rocks, coral, or other obstructions underwater except lots of hard packed sand. In the end we had a special father & sons memory of learning to surf together. We were all successful. We had an amazing time, and the staff could not have been more helpful, encouraging, and supportive. I highly recommend private lessons, because I feel like the ROI is 90+% with private lessons, and about 45-55% with group lessons. IMO group lessons can be good later on as refresher.

We weren't sure how it would go, but coach Elliot made all the difference. He was incredibly patient, kind, and understanding of our son's needs. The first couple of attempts were tough- our son was nervous about riding the waves and facing the unknown. But coach Elliot never rushed him and offered steady encouragement the whole time. Since the afternoon session was important for our schedule, I asked to cancel the entire camp, and they agreed. It has now been 10 days since the cancellation, and I still have not received my $675 refund. I've sent multiple messages asking for an update and have received no clear response or information about my refund. This has been a very poorly managed and disappointing experience. At this point, I'm actually glad my daughter didn't attend. I would not recommend this surf school based on how this situation has been handled. I am still waiting for my $675 refund and confirmation that it has been processed.

Fantastic experience with Mike!…read more I booked some time for me (A somewhat experienced surfer with years of rust who had fallen out of shape) and my buddy (Brand new to surfing but in great shape. Mike was great. Met us with board and wetsuits and met each of us at our level. He was very hands on and out there in the water with us the whole time. By the end, we'd both caught a few waves and i felt like i FINALLY knew what I was doing again. Since then, we've gone a few more times. Booking again next time im on the coast.

We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!
