I recently upgraded from a Coronado 27 to a Westsail 42. That's a big jump, and while I felt nervous about docking my 27' boat, the forces are so much smaller that even a "controlled crash" isn't that big of a deal. 30 tonnes of fiberglass with a full keel and massive prop walk is a different story, so I signed up for the docking and slow speed maneuvering class. Mark was a great instructor. I teach on-site classes for corporate engineers, and I was impressed by his demeanor, how he slightly tailored the class to each student, helped everyone feel confident, and made sure that each person had digested the lesson, instead of just assuming they did. At the end of the day, all that is nice, but the value of the class is measured by the results: I feel like I will be a lot more comfortable and confident taking my boat in and out of the slip, side tying, and generally handling it in tight spaces. I've taken classes with three other sailing schools in the southern California area, and honestly, they all were pretty decent. Santana is a little bit cheaper, just as good (and in some cases much better). Long Beach is much more relaxing to take a class in vs MDR or Redondo, and all the students ended up getting along so well that we ended up going for drinks nearby afterwards. I definitely didn't do that with the other students/instructors I've taken classes from. :) Normally I don't write a lot of reviews, but Santana is a small operation, and thought that it was worth a few minutes to try and support a small business, especially since I felt like I could honestly endorse it.

At anchorage in Catalina. Marc made an excellent appetizer. We had a wonderful time and learned a lot!

I have been on the water with Marc three times now and have learned something new each time. Most recently we completed a three day trip to Catalina where we worked on points of sail, sail trimming, anchoring, and navigation. Marc knows what he's doing and more importantly knows how to teach you what to do. His focus is making sure you progress in your skills. I'll definitely go back for more!

When we arrived in Long Beach, Marc met us and led us to a very well kept Catalina 34, La Terza Vita.

Whenever we have family or friends visiting from out of state or overseas, it's one of our favorite activities because it's a relaxing way to see the Port of Long Beach, the Queen Mary, and, if you're lucky, the sea lions. We brought another group yesterday, and everyone enjoyed the tour. The only downside, in my opinion, is the boats used for the harbor tour. Yesterday we were on the Kristina, and in the past we've also been on the Caroline, which we chartered for my mother's ash-scattering ceremony about 14 years ago. Both vessels are showing their age. I also think the marketing could be clearer. The photos on the website and many travel sites prominently feature the newer catamarans, which gives the impression that those are the boats used for the harbor tour. I actually called ahead to ask and learned that the harbor tours use different vessels. While I appreciated getting the correct information, many first-time visitors probably wouldn't think to ask and may expect the newer boats shown in the advertising. The harbor tour itself is still worthwhile, and we'll likely continue bringing our guests because we genuinely enjoy the experience. I just hope Harbor Breeze considers updating or refurbishing the harbor tour vessels and making the marketing a little clearer so guests know exactly what to expect.

There was a lot of people in line. I was in the middle and thought I wouldn't get good seats, but I ended up sitting outside in the front. The boat is really nice and big. The front is the best place to sit with a good view of the whales and dolphins. The inside was packed and you don't really see a lot and sitting outside in the back you could smell the fumes from the engine. I did see dolphins and whales - the mom and the calf. They had a couple of experts talk about the whales and dolphins. We were past Newport Beach when we finally saw the whales. We spent a good amount of time seeing them. Then we went back. It's gets windy. It was a fun experience.

And all though we still made the best of it it really did not live up to what was promised and the amount of money we paid. So let's start with m: 1. The address did not match what was listed on their Yelp page and created a lot of confusion and frustration especially since we had kids with us. I had to text the owner, Mario, and he gave us another location to charter form which was not at all what was listed on their page. 2. Not sure if the captain of the day,Noah, was having a bad day or what but he was definitely not in the mood to greet us properly. He was very short, not so friendly and barely spoke to us during our ride. 3. The boat was not like the photos they presented or posted on Yelp. I even texted the owner and asked him to send me a few photos of what the boat will look like. It was definitely dirty, the coaches were so damaged and dirty they had black clothes over them. One of inside couches was wet, my uncle sat on it unknowingly making his pants wet and him uncomfortable for the rest of the ride. 4. The table surfaces were all damaged & chipped. We had to be careful for the kids not to get splinters when they would approach the table to grab something to eat. 5. Worst of it all was that we only watched cargo shipments for 2 hours!! On our phone call with Mario mentioned we can go through the canals and even get a far glimpse of the Queen Mary but we didn't. We even asked Noah to take us the other way around into the open water and he said no he needs to this way first (meaning by the cargo shipments). It was very disappointing since it was my dads actual birthday and the experience was completely robbed from us. It's very sad that we wasted over a thousand dollars and didn't receive what we had paid for. And I even texted Mario afterwards telling him our concerns but didn't get a reply back. Poor customer service.

And they're phasing out their most powerful boat, the 75hp, because of too much abuse and the associated high insurance costs. But they still offer the 40hp boat and that has plenty of power, with a top speed of about 20 knots. It comfortably seats 4 people in designated seats, but can fit an extra two people sitting up front sideways on bench seating. I had a great time. I saw seals sunbathing on the buoys, and I even saw dolphins near the first oil rig island by the Queen Mary ship. Of course you can also get a nice close-up view of the Queen Mary itself. You're allowed to go almost to the Seal Beach Municipal Pier, but not quite. 1hr duration is enough if you want to do a quick single lap of the designated ocean area. 2hrs is highly recommend if you want to take your time and not be rushed. Be sure to bring a light jacket, hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the wind and sun. The designated driver is not allowed to drink. I'm not sure if the rest of the guests are allowed to drink. Park near the Yard House restaurant and then walk to the back of the restaurant and you'll see the little hut with the staff in it. If nobody is there then look over the edge to the docked boats because the staff might be down there instead.

We were given our paperwork and told exactly where to go to meet the gentleman down on the dock who would assist us in getting to our boat. Down on the dock we met Mets and so glad we did. Although he was working several other groups at the same time he greeted us, assisted us with loading our coolers on the boat and made sure we knew he would be checking on us as we decorated our boat for a surprise birthday. Once our group arrived he took the time to talk to our soon whose birthday it was. He was very thorough in his safety briefing and we felt very comfortable in safely operating the boat. He even pointed out that there were large groups of jellyfish in a certain area and that we should go see them. Once we returned he was standing right on the edge of the dock guiding us in. He asked all about our experience, was very sincere, and even recommended we bring our dogs next time.
