What started out to be a fun adventure for 3 friends to take on together, quickly became much more than that. Though it is highly unlikely that I will ever feel confident enough to take a boat out on my own, knowing that I would be trained to do so is kinda cool. This course, the basic Keel course, goes over so much information in order to guarantee your comfort and safety. There is some lecture, some take home work, and plenty of hands on experience. The course is divided into 4 weekend day classes, each lasting 5 hours. Between our instructors Brian and Lennox, they were able to provide all of their knowledge in a supportive and friendly manner. They are smart, very knowledgable, and appropriately funny at times. Having ample time on the boat before setting out to sail provided all of us with the proper lingo to use during sailing. So much to remember.... who knew it would be so complicated. But if I can memorize the 206 bones in the body, I should be able to get the terminology correct by the end of this course. Getting plenty of practice in the harbor before setting out to sail in the open water boosted everyone's confidence a little bit. It's like driving on the 405 for the first time...you just have to get out there and do it. Practice makes perfect. I appreciated this weekend class so much, and look forward to next weekend where we will continue to work on our skills, take a test, and hopefully come back for more. My friends and I work in a busy pediatric hospital, and this type of activity was just what we needed. A way to unwind (kind of), be in the beautiful waters of the Pacific, all while spending time with those we care about. It's a win win. This company is wonderful, it's like a well oiled machine. This review is long overdue! We have had an amazing experience at Bluewater Sailing. Exactly a year ago, we completed the ASA 101 basic keelboat program. We decided to learn to sail as a family with our 2 kids (7 and 11 years old) in the midst of the covid pandemic. The private lesson format was perfect for us. The program includes a lot of hands on practice on the water, which allowed us to build confidence. Since obtaining the certification, we have chartered their Catalina 22 boats on a regular basis to continue to improve our skills while enjoying our time on the water. The staff has been amazing, they are like family! Elliott is always willing to give us some new tips and advice when we come for a chartering session. Wendy, Cole and Ryan have been awesome too! Blue water sailing is the best sailing school in Marina Del Ray. We started with the level 101 class in January 2021 and have been sailing constantly with them almost once a week. The difference with these classes is that you are actually prepared to take a boat out because of how thorough they are. This is not a one day get your certification class. We are now fully trained on boats into the 30 foot rage, and we are very confident taking them out. Another factor as to what separates them is their fleet of boats. They are in really good shape and it is a fairly large fleet. Another advantage of this size of a fleet is you get to know how to set up and sail different boats of the same class so you are more prepared when you rent some where else. This review is long overdue - 4 years and a bunch of change, in fact. I am a frequent customer, have taken almost every class they have to offer, have learned more than I could have ever learned about sailing from any ASA sailing school. They were awesome back when I first visited in 2013 - making someone with zero experience feel welcome, feel capable, and feel safe and secure - and they are even more amazing today. Safety and education are top priorities, but so is having fun. The BCC class trip to Catalina is a blast and for those more adventurous, sailing to Santa Cruz Island for the ACC course is an epic adventure. I've been to Catalina twice with my husband, in one of the Bluewater boats, and created memories that will last a lifetime. But my favorite way to spend the day is out on the water in Santa Monica Bay (and beyond) - checking out the sea lions, dolphins, and occasionally the whales - on Bluewater's Cool Change (a Catalina 34) or Sea Shell (a Catalina 22). Sailing is a commitment and an investment - one that is totally worth it IMO. And by far, there's no better sailing school in Marina Del Rey than Bluewater Sailing. read more

I had a difficult time connecting with the staff about their classes and private lessons - I would call, leave a message, follow up in a couple days, etc, and then a few days later I'd hear from someone. I eventually learned that the class I'm interested in wasn't being offered at the time. In all fairness, I can understand if they get less inquiries about Coastal Navigation than they do 101 or 103 and therefore don't offer that class as often. And with that in mind, I was happy about them offering to notify me once the class became avail. However, when the class eventually became available I asked to sign up - within 30 mins of receiving the email - but unfortunately never heard back from them. (That was 2 weeks ago.) For one of the more costly options in LA I would expect better customer service. I wonder if there's been a change in ownership, considering most of their positive reviews are from quite a few years ago. read more

I have owned a sailboat in the past and I was always afraid when it came to docking and undocking. Additionally, I bought a sailboat and I had zero experience so I did not know what most of the systems on the boat did; everything was trial and some bad errors. I went to Bluewater sailing because I had a interest in getting another boat. I took the basic keel boat class and then basic coastal cruising course. I must say the classes are more than basic, the gave me a great understanding of maneuvering the craft and many other concepts. The instructors are knowledgable and friendly and you will get lots of valuable hands on training in very nice boats. Part of my training was aboard a Catalina 36. These course taught me things at many of my more experienced friends have not yet mastered. However, it is extremely important to practice these skills either by renting from Bluewater or on your own boat so you become proficient. I won't get into all of the things that are taught I will give you two mundane but huge tips: 1. Unplug the boat from the power source at the dock before you unplug the boat. If you drop the boat side of the plug in the water before you remove it from the dock, big problem. I did it the other day but thanks to the training I had already unplug from the dock. 2. Give everyone a job and put the boat away correctly. I since have purchased another boat and I have been able to thoroughly enjoy the experience because of the skills I was taught at Bluewater and continue to perfect. If you want to learn to sail, charter boats or purchase your own, Bluewater is the place to start. Elliot, Amy, Brian and the crew are real pros. Today I sailed the boat into the slip, just to test the skills I have been taught. Not a big deal to some but from where I started as a sailor, it's huge. read more

They are pleasant and easy to work with on the phone when planning your class or charter, good teachers on the water, and you quickly start to feel like one of the gang after a few weeks of coming by on the weekends. The staff are always happy to answer your questions about sailing, whether you are chatting after a class, after a charter, or if you just dropped by to say hello. I particularly liked how Elliott teaches you how to make sure your friends/crew are having fun/not getting sea sick on a day sail. Sometimes you get so focused on your sailing technique, you forget about your guests, but I always remember what Elliott says about approaching the wind and swells from the right angle to keep your guests having fun...... My recommendation based off of a year of personal experience as a student as this school: choose another school. You will not be put first as a paying customer but will be at the mercy of the owner's dishonest policies. There are currently five ASA certified schools in the Marina, and although this one appears to be the oldest, it's run by a new owner who "inherited" the school from the former owner who fled to Alaska and left without telling anyone. Months went by and not until unpaid slip fees and bills kept adding up in addition to staff not getting paid did anyone noticed. The new owner, Elliott, was an instructor at the time and decided to "jump" into taking over this venture. His lack of experience is clear in that he provides no customer service to students, lacks professionalism and fails to keep in alignment with his staff in regards to policies. Let me explain: 1) The first day of your student course, you will get sold on a "package". Do your math correctly, as the package may not add up. One part of the package that staff and owner try to sell you on is the additional "Free Charters." Don't be mistaken, you are paying for them upfront, just at a discounted rate, and you are treated like a second class citizen when you actually try to redeem them. Weekends you will be wait-listed and de-prioritized to "paying customers" for charters (wait, I've spent 2k + here plus a referral I brought in and I can't use my free charter on a weekend? You are saying I need to use it during the week? Well I work until 5PM each day, so how is this going the work?) The owner frankly doesn't care. 2) The owner smokes cigarettes during classes and you can smell it as he's teaching courses making the experience repulsing. In addition, he repeats himself, talks long and doesn't resonate to be effective. All other hired instructors seem to be calm, effective and interestingly had little positive to say about the owner other than he saved Bluewater Sailing from going bankrupt. They actually seemed annoyed with him as well. 3) Staff will call and hammer you to remind you to sign up for future classes, however when it comes time for them to give you any type of courtesy call (waiting a few minutes for you to come check out a boat) they will go home and not call you, even if they say on the phone that they will wait for you. One employee told me she would be staying until 6PM and left by 5:10PM. I got there with a group at 5:30PM and called the owner. He put the blame on her and said she needed a lunch break and sometimes accommodates people too much. 4) Elliott appears to be misogynistic: ladies beware. He puts the blame on his female staff all the time when they aren't in alignment with his policies. He told me the girls tend to "overextend themselves." You mean the girls are trying to offer customer service and accommodate paying customers? His front staff person Amy, practically runs the business and could do a much better job owning the business than him. He lacks tact and ability to keep customers happy. In addition he did not offer my female partner and I a "couples discount" even though in writing in the office it clearly states "ask about our couples discount." It's clear LGBT aren't treated equally here which ultimately is unlawful. Before you sign up, meet the owner in person and make sure you want to sign up to dealing with his persona. read more

I got the sailing bug last summer while visiting a friend on the east coast. Immediately when returning to LA I began my research on finding a sailing school. I am so happy I found Bluewater Sailing, they are amazing! I began my classes in September and already feel very comfortable out on the water. With each lesson and charter I feel more confident. Elliot and the rest of the staff are amazing. They are always more than willing to answer questions and talk about your sailing experience. One of my favorite parts are the chats we have after I charter a boat! All the instructors I have had so far in my classes are great! Extremely thorough, calm, knowledge and patient. My wife and I signed up for a BYOB (Bring Your Own Boat) sailing course at Bluewater Sailing. Multiple sailing schools in the marina declined to give us lessons on our own boat, insisting we use theirs. Lesson here is to never tell a potential customer what you can not do for them, tell them how much it will cost them and let them make the decision themselves. Elliot from Bluewater was very profession, knowledgable and eager to answer any questions my wife or I had. We were assigned an instructor, Brian for our Basic Keelboat course. From day one Brian was punctual, professional and thorough. Punctuality being my pet peeve this was greatly appreciated. Brian explained to us what to expect over the course, in addition to completion standards. Though 90% of the course is on the water, Brian had us well prepared for the written exam and practical sailing evaluation by the last day. My wife and I passed and have been enjoying our newly acquired sailboat almost every weekend sense we completed the course. We plan to return for more training next year. read more

I just finished the Basic Keelboat class this weekend, and am officially ASA certified! I cannot recommend this class enough. Our instructor was extremely knowledgable, helpful, and a pleasure to work with during the four day (2 weekends) class. When you first start out learning how to sail, with no previous knowledge, there can be a lot if information to digest. It feels a bit overwhelming, but the way this class is taught and the experience you get out on the water, sets you up for success. By keeping the class size small, you get to know the people you're learning with pretty well, and everyone gets a lot of individual time working and perfecting each part and process of the sailing experience. I want to provide a long overdue review for this place. I just finished a sailing trip to Italy sailing off the Ligurian coast in the Mediterranean. I was able to leverage all the skills I acquired with Bluewater. I had my Coastal Cruising and Bareboat classes and certification with them. It has been a long process but it was definitely justified and needed because the time it takes to not just learn but practice all the skills required to be a good sailor. They didn't suggest any shortcuts, which I highly appreciate. I definitely "learned my ropes" the hard way. But don't get me wrong. They didn't make anything hard for me in any way. In fact, I need to give a special shoutout to Greg, who is not only a good teacher but also a kind and charismatic person. They're also very accommodating with boat rentals. Wow, I was really surprised to read the other reviews as my experience at Bluewater Sailing was incredible! I can only assume that it was a misshapen day and certainly not what my experiences were. My first group lesson was with Elliot who I found to be both extremely knowledgeable as well as thoughtful and considerate in his teaching methods. He kept the lessons fun and eventful, even taking us out past the harbor. We used two different boats from their fleet, a smaller, lighter craft on the first day, then graduating to a larger size for the two remaining sessions. The boats were very well maintained, much higher than what you would expect from a service and rental fleet. I went back at a later time for a private lesson to build on my new skills. This time I was paired with Peter, the owner. Again, I had a fabulous experience that was not only fun but gave me valuable learning tools for future use. My wife and I decided to take sailing lessons in order to rent and sail a boat around the British Virgin Islands with our two young children. We took lessons from the Bluewater team over the course of three months. They couldn't have been more friendly, flexible and accommodating to our schedule and needs. I'm proud to say that we just returned from the trip of a lifetime in the BVI. We rented a 41 ft boat and sailed for 8 days ourselves without a hired skipper. It was all possible because of Bluewater. No only did they teach us the required ASA curriculum for 101, 103 and 104, Elliot and his team tailored the instruction to help us accomplish our goal in record time. They also taught us additional skills we needed specifically for the BVI. As an extra bonus, they helped put us in touch with people who had sailed in the BVI that gave us great advice. Bluewater continued to be a valuable resource to us even after our lessons (for example, I called them with questions while in the BVI). It clearly shows that they run the business for the love of sailing and teaching. I will definitely be chartering from them for day sails with my family in the socal area. I had the opposite experience to that described in the review by "Mr. C," -- I suspect that's because of the recent change in management. My experience, as a sailing newbee taking the Basic Keelboat class, was VERY positive in every dimension. First, I was blown away by the quality and depth of what I learned in just two successive weekends. Second, the hands on in-the-boat-on-the-water experience, in both 30' and a 22' Catalinas was invaluable in making it all come together. Third, the instructor (and owner) Elliot, clearly has a passion for sailing and conveyed it. Fourth, after taking the class I was able to pass the ASA certification test with ease. Fifth, the free 1/2 day bareboat rental at the conclusion of the course was icing on the cake. Bluewater Sailing was exactly what I was looking for. I've always loved the ocean but I'd never sailed before. About a month ago I decided to take the plunge and learn to sail. After fairly extensive research I decided to take the ASA 101 course and choose Bluewater due to pretty good reviews. Bluewater did not dissapoint. This is a small company with a personal touch. During the four day class I met most if not all of the staff and every last person was friendly and invested in my learning and having a good time. David was incredibly helpful answering all of my questions while I signed up for the class. Logan and Brian were amazing instructors taking great care to make sure our class knew what we needed. They teach you what you need to know for the test but their focus is definitely on making sure you are capable and confident enough to skipper a boat on your own. Even Eliot, the owner would stop by before class and help me with knots and any questions I had. This place is truly committed to helping you learn. Please note that this is not a casual class where you can relax for hours as someone sails you around Santa Monica bay. If that's what you're looking for Bluewater will charter you a boat with a skipper and you'll have an amazing time. You'll get out of these classes what you put into them. If you're committed to learning they are fantastic. Before I started the class I would have to lookup which side was port and starboard. A week after the class I'm planning on using my free charter that came with the class and skippering a boat without the instructor. I'm going back for the 103 class as soon as I can. read more

I have just read the previous reviews and have some input on this. I cannot provide the highest review and that may have been my issue. I will explain this at the end. I just completed the 106, Advanced Coastal Crusing. Ok, Elliot can get harsh and occasionally argumentative. He will absolutely have the last word but you know what? THAT'S HIS JOB! He is not only an instrurctor, Owner, HE IS THE CAPTAIN! He has to ensure the safety of all aboard so if you want someone to hold your hand and take you on a dinner cruise you should look elsewhere. He is a GREAT instructor and Captain. Safety is his primary concern at all times. Period. I had to re-do my 105 (Coastal Navigation) and 106 (Advanced Coastal Crusing) for reasons that are not important. I contacted BlueWater and thought I was set. Perhaps I misunderstood the costs. Is what it is. LISTEN CAREFULLY to prices quoted and ENSURE that the cost of taking the written test is included! If in doubt ASK! In my case the 105 was not part of the package at all. I heard a number and thought it was the full cost to include testing. It was not and the 105 was not part of the package nor was the cost of the written for the 106. I had a BLAST taking the course and am hardly new to Sailing. Elliot helped me tweak skills and learn new ones. I spent over 6 hrs just Elliot and Aye (LOL) at night. Not my first rodeo night sailing. He took time to explain things, made it all easy to understand and made the learning process fun. In This whole ASA series is Advanced! I took a private lesson with Eliot at Bluewater this weekend and could not have been happier with my lesson. My boyfriend has been sailing for three years now and I decided it was time get myself acquainted with the basics. I'll admit that I was fairly nervous before the lesson but Eliot really put me at ease. He is extremely professional, personable, and thorough. He taught me how to check and prepare the boat for a day on the water, how to drive and maneuver the 34 foot boat, and how to identify wind direction and anticipate changes in sea and wind conditions. I've taken a few classes and charters with Bluewater and had nothing but positive experiences. They are completely professional at all times and their boats are well maintained.
