That made this section of the banister wobbly, unsafe and prone to further damage. Prior and now failed repairs with mastic and nails were an eyesore and calling for further restoration work. Ben with Kellam's supervision closely conferred with me how to do the best structural and cosmetic restoration of the banister. They dismantled the newel post from the handrail and the mounting of the post to the staircase frame, and removed old nails and mastic from the post rails joint all without damage. To remove the post, they had to remove stapled carpeting and a stair tread that they replaced without damage at the end of the job. They very securely remounted the newel post with corner backets under the stair tread and long bolts into its base covered with matching round plugs. Having so securely remounted the post and restoring the post to rail mortise and tendon, the handrail was solidly secured without the further use of mastic, nails or screws. With a few touchups to old wood putty, they then managed to remove obvious evidence of prior repairs. As this section of handrail may need a restoration replacement to match the quality of the other staircase handrails, their method of reconnection rail to the post will allow for less problematic handrail replacement without damage.
