Having lived in Drexel Hill for lo, these 25 years, I've seen many businesses start up...then shut…read moredown. For whatever reason, we just don't have many flourishing business areas. So, I was very surprised to hear about Sojourn Yoga, which is in that center next to the trolley tracks, by McGillicuddy's and The Wave. It's been there a little over a year, but I somehow never noticed it. I only recently decided to give yoga a try--I had attempted at least 6 years ago but never really got into it, thinking it was too easy and boring. I picked Sojourn mainly because it's literally 5 minutes from my house--and if you're from this area, you know how unique that is. I can't really think of any other fitness studio (barring dance studios) that are actually right in DH and not a 15-20 minute drive away. Anyway, I took the Sunday morning Flow (aka vinyasa) class, taught by owner Liz. She was super friendly and welcoming and addressed all my concerns. They have a few mats to borrow if you don't have one, like me. A drop-in class is $15, the class cards are cheaper by the class, and there was no pressure to sign up for anything. There are even towels there if you want one. This particular class was heated but not to insane bikram temperatures. It was about 85 degrees which was enough to get some extra flexibility but not so much that my mat turned into a slip-n-slide. Also, the other students in the class were very friendly--it was a pretty non-competitive atmosphere. I left feeling like I got a great workout--it definitely changed my mind about yoga. Admittedly, as my first real yoga class, I don't have much to compare this to, and I can't speak to those who have been yoga for a long time. However, I'd say if you're a beginner, this is a great place to go. I recognized a lot of the poses from dance and other barre classes I've taken, so I think it may be intimidating for someone who is totally new, but the atmosphere here was very relaxed and accepting. There are also non-heated classes and ones that hold the poses for longer, so those would be especially great for beginners. So overall, I'm excited to go back. Parking is metered and quarters only, mon-sat, 9-5. Some of the bigger classes can have about 20 students, so the studio might get cramped sometimes, but my class had only about 7, with plenty of room to spare. The studio is really pretty and a lovely addition to the neighborhood so I hope it survives for a very long time. It's just what we need more of in DH.

I cannot recommend Empowered Yoga more highly…read more I was totally new to yoga when I first walked through EY's doors. I was so nervous, out of shape, and positively convinced that I was going to make a fool out of myself that I almost turned around in the parking lot. But upon entering the classroom, it was immediately apparent that the EY methodology is based in safety, strength, and education. They've managed to find the perfect balance between body and mind that seems to be lacking in other yoga studios. Meaning: EY is not a fitness boot camp nor is there an overemphasis/push to subscribe to a common spirituality. You are given the freedom to pick and choose what you're comfortable with, which allows you to make your yoga practice about *you*. It's truly a beautiful thing. Just bring yourself and an open mind: the instructors will do the rest, guiding everyone gracefully from pose to pose, offering individual help and modifications as needed. Everyone at EY, including the members themselves, have been consistently kind, respectful, and welcoming. **I'd also like to point out that the Brand New Beginner's (BNB) course is PERFECT for people (like me) that find confidence in knowledge and appreciate the extra assurance. Ask questions, take things slow, and learn the "how & why" of yoga in a safe, positive environment. It was one of the most rewarding decisions I've ever made. The best part? You've got nowhere to go but up within EY. They give you plenty of opportunities for growth: from Vinyasa to Balanced Athlete classes to workshops on the weekends....I've no need to ever step foot in a gym again. How do people practice yoga anywhere else?
