Bowie had their first restaurant week recently, and I took that as an opportunity to try somewhere new. I'm trying to remember what used to be in this space... It's right next to Blvck Cow that used to be Mi Hacienda, a spot my friends and I frequented almost too much haha. There was a sign outside with all of the selections. When I stepped inside, the lady behind the counter treated me, and I happily sang along to the MJB that was playing. I saw that they had a few seats and a fridge full of jugs of juice. I knew I wanted the turkey leg, but I had to know what the best sides were. I decided on the collards and mac & cheese with my turkey leg. It took about 15 minutes and I was on my way. When I got home, I really enjoyed the food I got. Loved the seasoned turkey legs, and the flavor of the collards was nice. Many places make it too salty and that wasn't the case here, so that was a delight. Mac and cheese was good, but probably the lowest part of the meal... as I said, still good. There's plenty more on the menu to try, so I'll have to return. They've been on my radar, but I'm glad Restaurant Week motivated me to finally go.

I really wanted to like this spot, but unfortunately, my experience was a huge letdown. I ordered through Uber Eats for myself and a friend, and basically everything I got was overcooked. * The hush puppies were dry and tough. * The wing flats with the boss sauce had good flavor, but they were dried out. * The fried whiting was dry as well. * The cabbage was completely inedible. * The French fries tasted stale. By the time I went through my order, I had to scrap the whole thing and order a completely different meal that evening. The only thing I didn't try were the collard greens--but given the rest, I didn't have high hopes. To be fair, the food did arrive quickly, but I can only assume it was already cooked earlier and left sitting under a heat lamp all day. There was no freshness at all, just tough, dried-out food that was hard to eat. Sadly, this was my first and last time ordering from here. Definitely won't be ordering again.

This is some good southern cooking right here. Everything was amazing. The honey cornbread tastes like a dessert, like cinnamon cake. The greens were cooked to perfection. The grilled catfish was amazing. The hush puppies were so flavorful. And of course the DMV favorite fried chicken wings with the Mumbo sauce. Amazing. You can get your food yo go or grab a table. Stop by to enjoy this good old southern yumminess!

    Soggy Fried Pork Chops

My friend and I were looking for somewhere local to order since I can't get out. They hadn't tried this place before, and I couldn't remember why I told myself not to order from here again. Well...now I have another reason. I ended up with soggy fried pork chops. He liked the collard greens that came with my platter so I'll give it a few stars for that. Otherwise the whiting, the two sides he ordered (potato salad and dry cabbage), the tiny pieces of corn bread, and the pork chops were a NO! What a waste of money. I needed to post so I could remember and same my money.

I've been hearing about this place, so I took a chance and ordered. I did order delivery, and I must say the food still arrived hot and fresh. I ordered smothered pork chops with yams and cabbage. The pork chops, although cooked and seasoned well, were absolutely not smothered. If you look at the pics, the gravy was very thin, and barely any on there. I am used to a thicker gravy and for them to be...SMOTHERED. So for that, i'd have to give the chops a 8/10. The yams were my favorite! 10/10 great texture, and sweet like i like. The cabbage wasn't too bad. A little on the blander side, but nothing some hot sauce didn't fix. 7/10. And lastly the mac&cheese....there are many different styles of mac and I wasn't mad at this one. If you're looking for creamy, with a cheese pull, this one isn't for you. But, it was still seasoned well and had a good taste to it. 7.5/10. B.B.U. is a welcomed addition to the area. I will def be back to try other menu items soon.

    All DRUMS!!!!! No flats!

I visited B.B.U Kitchen in Bowie, MD on a Friday night and had an absolutely terrible experience from start to finish. I ordered the 10-piece party wings, greens, and mac & cheese. When my food finally came out (after a long wait), I noticed immediately that my wings were all drums -- no flats at all. I went back to the counter because this is not standard and has never been an issue at any other restaurant. The cashier told me to wait and went to get a "superior." When he came out, he never introduced himself, never said hello, and never acknowledged me as a customer. He just stood there with his hands in his pockets staring at me. I explained calmly that I received all drums instead of the usual half-and-half that comes with a 10-piece order everywhere else. His response was, "What do you want me to do about it?" I told him I wanted the flats that were supposed to come with my order and that he could take the drums back. He then told me they "don't have any flats" and that "that's how the store sold it to him, so that's how I was going to have to take it." He flat-out refused a refund and instead offered me a discount to order something else. Why would I spend more money when I already paid for a meal I was unhappy with? He then pointed out that he was the owner and said he "was not about to lose money on this order." That statement alone says everything you need to know about how this business treats its customers. Between the extremely long wait time, the incorrect order, the rude and dismissive attitude, and the refusal to make things right, this was one of the worst customer service experiences I've had. Do not support this business. They clearly do not care about customer satisfaction at all.

Second review- The fried chicken was wonderful. I also had the corn bread. I noticed it had cinnamon in it. Not sure if that is an authentic ingredient but it was good. The shrimp were a little salty. Everything else was good.

Came to this unexpected but I'm glad that I came. I had the whole wings (w/mambo sauce) meal with Mac/Cheese and Candied Yams. The meal was so good and it was worth the price. The place was a welcoming environment. It's definitely a place that I'll be coming back to in the near future.

My issue is that if I am paying three additional dollars for all flats, I expect all flats, not three drums. So, that's my first issue. My issue is that I ordered online. And the online photo for mashed potatoes, the potatoes have gravy on them. So, after I noticed that my potatoes did not have gravy, I re-entered the store, explained that i based the decision to purchase the potatoes off of the picture, and just asked for a side. They gave me aside, but not before explaining that I didn't order the potatoes with gravy. Whatever. Not a big deal. Let's get into the food itself: MASHED POTATOES AND GRAVY: the star of the show actually ended up being the mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm not going to hold you, they are very good in a different kind of way. The combination really works, and I really think that they are the perfect combination of smooth and lumpy. Mac & Cheese: I try not to go too crazy when judging macaroni and cheese, because everybody makes it so differently. I don't think I would order this again, but it wasn't terrible. It just wasn't how I like it. It definitely tastes like it's made with Velveeta. For those who that matters to. Lol. Greens: I liked the greens, but I wish they had meat in them. They are definitely definitely on the more bitter side, but I like mine a little bit bitter. Honey cornbread: I think this cornbread made me like honey less. It just tasted like a piece of cornbread that had been heavily brushed with a honey glaze. It wasn't soggy, but it also wasn't memorable and wasn't very good. Wings: SIGHHHHHHHH. They were fine. I like the Mumbo sauce. Reminds me of this grocery store we used to get wings at in high school in Missouri. But they weren't well done or really crispy and again... not all flats. I'd come back just for the mashed potatoes and gravy, tho.

I wasn't headed to BBU Kitchen, but because Texas Roadhouse doesn't open until 3, I quickly pivoted. My godson and I were meeting up for lunch and we decided to check it out. So, the ambiance isn't anything particularly special. It's a small establishment with about 4-5 tabletops of two seats per table, but I appreciated the backdrop where the menu was posted on the wall. Essentially, the menu was giving southern style cooking - a lot of it. There was a plethora of appetizers including salmon nuggets, multiple types of chicken, and shrimp, hushpuppies and fries. The menu was chicken, fish and I think I even saw pork chops. We landed on the fried chicken wings appetizers. The wings were fried to perfection! Crispy on the outside, seasoned well, and juicy on the inside. The boss sauce was just meh. I got the fried whiting dinner with cabbage and potato salad. Godson got the fried catfish with greens and mac and cheese. My fish and his were fried to perfection. I think BBU has the fried aspect on lock. My whiting had quite a few bones, and his had none. Still, I really enjoyed it and we each had one piece left to bring home. The sides were overall good. The mac and cheese, greens and potato salad were especially tasty. The cabbage paled in comparison. It was Godson's birthday, so I asked him to pick a dessert. He went for the apple pie, which he compared to an amped up version of a McDonald's apple pie. Then, the owner came over and gifted him a slice of the double chocolate cake. (Can't write about that because we were so full, he opted to save it for later.) My nitpicky self would recommend providing a larger napkin - eating fried food with cocktail napkins can really get messy. Still, I am going to stick with my 4-star rating because the woman at the register and the owner were really nice, checking in on us often. Service goes a long way...

Everything I ordered was so good. The owner and the hostess provided great service and advice on what to order. I'll definitely be back. (I asked for the mac just in case it was too heavy )

The fish (catfish and croaker) always tastes like it's been fried in grease that needs changing. There's no flavor profile in the food which is weird for a soul-food restaurant. The mixed veggies were absolutely disgusting-- gave them back. I paid $65 for fried catfish with two sides, fried croaker with two sides, a cookie and two drinks---and sadly, the only thing that was sort of worth it was the cornbread, but it tastes like it has coconut in it. I hate coconut. The item that was the most flavorful for me was the black eyed peas/hoppin John (minus the big pieces of fatty meat in them).

Period…read more I've been seeing this place all over social media, so when I found myself in the area, I had to see what the hype was about. First off, parking is easy. It's in a shopping center, so nothing stressful there, and the restaurant itself is easy to spot. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean, polished, and classy everything looked. Even though it was busy, it didn't feel chaotic. The staff immediately greeted me and asked if it was my first time which I appreciated. They didn't just rush me through the line; they actually took time to explain the menu, how the bowls are built, and offered samples. That alone made the experience feel welcoming and intentional. Now let's get into the FOOD. Everything looked fresh. They have about four rice options (which is already a win), and I went with the pineapple coconut rice. For my protein, I chose grilled chicken, but they also offer shrimp, salmon, and even a mushroom option for vegetarians and honestly, the mushrooms looked so good I almost switched. For my added sides, I kept it simple because I really wanted to taste everything. Collard greens and sweet potatoes. But they also had plantains, and okra....real deal soul food options. Then you get into the fresh toppings. Slaws, carrots, pickled veggies. I kept it light. I finished my bowl with collard green pesto (which intrigued me, and I'm glad I tried it) and added an étouffée sauce over my rice... and listen!!!!! That combo? Chef's kiss. I grabbed a tropical punch juice, and just like everything else, it tasted fresh and well-made. Let me say this clearly: the food is a 10/10. If you're someone who will give Chipotle chance after chance, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to try Spice Black. 10/10. Worth your money. Worth the hype. Worth the experience.

Honestly, everything came together nicely as one salad, nothing was over powering. I'm just not a fan of chickpeas. Jerry's Seafood is located in Bowie near the Bowie Town Center and there was ample parking. We came in and were shown to our table. The ambiance was minimalistic Cap Cod vibes with wood beam walls with touches of nautical items (ship wheels and pictures of tin-canned oyster containers). Our server, Eddie, was excellent. He was engaging, informative, and just had a wonderful vibe throughout our dining experience. He started us off with a basket of rolls: hot and fresh with softened butter. Our meal was starting off just as we'd hope. We started with the fresh crab dip which was rich and creamy topped with jumbo lump crab, chives and a touch of Old Bay served hot with a sliced baguette. This was my first time experiencing a crab dip so LIGHT and creamy. The Old Bay was not overwhelming, just the perfect compliment to the fresh, sweet jumbo lump crab. The baguettes were more than enough and were crisp on one side and soft on the other. This dip was exceptional. Next was our entree, the crab bomb was served with two sides ( we got the seasoned wedges and stewed tomatoes). The stewed tomatoes were fresh with a sweetness that brought back memories. The wedges were perfect: pillowy soft inside with a crisp seasoned coating. Now the crab bomb....this was exceptional: 10 ounces of all lump crab, baked to perfection; no need for additional seasonings or even a sauce; maybe a squeeze of fresh lemon. It was so sweet and delicate; one of the best I have had in a while. We also got a Mariner's Platter to go: a six ounce crab cake, flounder, fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, fried oysters, and fries scallops with two sides ( we chose two garden salads). The platter was a bit skimpy for $63 and it was just okay for us; the scallops were not edible AT ALL: they had a metallic taste that was present on the first bite, that was disappointing (this dropped our score from a 5 to 4 stars). The salads were fresh and we got the honey/lemon dressing. That dressing was SO good! I usually don't go for creamy dressing like this, BUT this dressing was so unexpectedly good! All in all, a great meal that I will drive to Bowie again for with no hesitation (except for the Mariner's Platter).
