It did take a long time to hear back, and a while to get it repaired, but she warned me that it took someone skilled in antique clocks to do it and there aren't that many available. I thought the price was reasonable, and the clock works. The service is great and the woman I dealt with very friendly and knowledgeable. The bad reviews seem from years ago, maybe it's different people or they have changed the way they do business, but I am definitely bringing another clock there. It's a cuckoo clock that someone's bratty kid turned the hands backward on, which you're not supposed to do--only forward--because she wanted to hear it chime. I will comment on that when I take the clock there. What holds it back from a higher review although I was happy with the people and the service was that you do play Russian roulette trying to get them on the phone--it seems they're never there and there is no answering machine--in 2013 no machine?--and the length of time I had to wait. But the clock is indeed fixed and it's hard to get someone to repair a clock over 100 years old.

Autrefois definitely did not share the crowded, dusty feel most antique shops I've been to -- I can't profess expertise in the area, but the store seemed pared down without being austere. The pieces were all wonderful, and I know that at least some were artfully restored, so well, in fact, that I even asked the owner about the great condition of most of the things, and she was happy to show me exactly where certain pieces were restored (she seemed to indicate that they are sent off for professional restoration). It's worth noting that I didn't see a piece that was obviously restored, and everything had a great patina. As I told her, if I had the money, I would be a frequent patron!

Prices are very reasonable--they are not out to get you but to share their love of antiques with you--and the store encompasses a wide definition of what an antique really is. Sometimes an "antique" can be a lamp or table that is actually very modern in concept and history, but is not appreciated by many homeowners. The owner also has a very good sense of design, and if you tell her where the piece is going to go, she can advise you on whether it is the right choice. Highly recommended!
