This place is a complete rip off. Want to charge me $641 for regular (comprehensive) service son a $2800 watch. Came in for a battery for my watch. Said they were having issues with my credit card, so I ended up paying cash. My credit card was also charged more than once as well. Cancelled my card, hassle and a half, as I'm on vacation. Charges were from The Watchman and Intuit. Called the business back the following morning, the man was apologetic, but I had already cancelled the card. Staff needs education on credit card transactions!! read more

I have bought a number of watches from the Watchmaker, I have also bought from high end retailers such as Tourneau. The Watchmaker will service everything and will deal with manufacturers when need be. They will source anything even if it's not on their showcase... I trust The Watchmaker implicitly and will never be burned again with prices or repairs from a large retail watch company. I posted a picture of my Hamilton Jazzmaster, its striking yet subdued, bought it from the Watchmaker and it replaced my Breitling Avenger as my everyday watch... Excellent service despite Covid-19. Dave's father worked on two of my watches and results better than any other place. Not cheap but reasonable. You may have to wait a couple of months but worth it. This review is important to you if you are considering a good place to send your watch for repair. By way of brief background I sent my Oris dive watch in to be serviced. I was advised initially that the watch would need a full service and it would be around $500 or so. Ugh! ... but then I get a call. The watch maker found a simple fix and while I could have had the watch serviced, it was not due and the simple fix would get the job done. The price $100 and change. This NEVER happens to me. What I know about watch repair you could write on the back of a postage stamp, so I was in these guys hands to be honest and do what needed to be done. So to have someone look after your watch and wallet at the same time came as a shock. I put it down to the fact they are truly honorable people who put their customers first and do what needs to be done rather than hose you down for money. So I could recommend these guys highly enough - fantastic service delivered by wonderful people. Thanks for your help. read more

Stay away from this business. I brought a vintage watch to them for repair in August 2020 which was my dad's from 1941. After an initial non-refundable deposit of $100, the final cost was $775 and warrantied for one year. After about two months it was repaired and working fine. I only wore this watch one day a week or less. After ten months the crown, (winder) fell out. I brought it back to the Watchmaker under terms of the warranty. After a week or so, I get a return invoice asking for $585 to repair the crown because there was water damage inside which voided the warranty. I should note that the warranty language in the first invoice was different from the warranty language in the second estimate/invoice. I took this watch to another repair expert in Boston. The crown was replaced for $35 and he saw no indication of rust or water damage. I was almost cheated out of $550 by the Watchmaker. When I reported this to the Watchmaker I got absolutely no apology or even shock that the crown was repaired for $35. No justification for their charges. They just got caught. My advice based on my experience is to stay away from this business. read more

Great Service! My Oris dive watch was in poor cosmetic condition. I sent it to The Watchmaker for a face lift not realizing that the internal components badly needed a tune-up. What came back was a new watch fully rejuvenated. I was very pleased with the process from start to end. Very transparent with estimating the cost, a full explanation of the steps involved, and Dave always provided a timely response to my inquiries. I greatly appreciated receiving pictures of my watch during the initial examination phase as well as receiving a detailed description of the scope of work needed to bring the watch back to factory specs. After 2.5 years of near-daily use, my Polar heart-rate monitor watch battery died, so I sent it to The Watchmaker because it's one of only six authorized service centers in the country. I'll never make that mistake again. They ask you to authorize a charge up to $75 on a credit card up front, which is the crux of my complaint. According to their repair form, a battery replacement should have cost only $12.95 plus return shipping. I gave them the coded transmitter as well for a battery replacement ($6.95) and was given an estimated turnaround of 2-3 days. Ten days passed without hearing anything, so I called for a status report and they reported it had already been mailed back to me but they had replaced the transmitter "because it had failed our tests" -- at a cost of $45.95. I'm doubtful because I was using the transmitter without the watch on Polar-enabled cardio machines for a month before sending it in, and it worked perfectly. Had I been given the option, I would have declined a new transmitter, but they already had my credit card authorization so I was SOL. All in all, the repair cost me $72 when I was expecting it to be under $20 plus return shipping. A brand-new Polar HRM still under warranty costs only $79 on Amazon, so if I could do it over, I wouldn't have bothered. read more

I wanted to have the bezel swapped on my Omega Planet Ocean. After doing a bit of research on various watch forums, the resounding concencus was to go to the watchmaker. It was a bit of a drive for me, but well worth it. The staff is knowledgeable, courteous, personable and extremely proficient. My watch was perfectly serviced. Very pleased. Although I would probably feel more comfortable sending my watch directly to Omega should it require an overahaul, but for any routine maintenance, would trust the Watchmaker. Also, this business was very busy, which I believe speaks to its reputation as well. A very good, reliable independent watch shop; a nice change from having to go to a large jewelry chain. read more

Definitely a hidden gem... I have a Swiss double dial Rotary watch that has stopped working... Rotary from Switzeland listed the wrong watch shop on their website and I found that The Watchmaker is their preferred service provider. Although I have just dropped my watch off today, you cannot ask for a greater sense of professionalism. I loved the fact I got an email with a photo of my watch and am promised an estimate to repair within 8 days. I was impressed with the unique selection of Swiss and German made watch brands I had not discovered before and a few vintage pocket watches. Polite professional staff. These guys know what they are doing and really enjoy what they do. Very refreshing, caring and personal. I just purchased a "Ball" watch for my daughter; not super expensive, but not inexpensive either, and Bob took time to go over everything in the store that met my criteria, without being "forceful". Turns out my wife liked a different face design within the same brand and I called Bob. No problem. They had the different one inside a couple of days and it was all very smooth. They have excellent, upcoming brands with a focus on affordable mechanical watches from Mido, Ball, Hamilton, Tissot, Oris and a few others. Their offerings utilize the same Swiss movements that very expensive watches from Omega, Baume & Mercier and other more recognizable brands, however, it is nice to see The Watchmaker cares about not overcharging for excellent timepieces. I can't say enough good things about this establishment. Being a very infrequent yelper (I yelp when something is really great or really bad), this review will likely get yanked from the ones you can see. My polar heart monitor went dead so in spite of the 1 star review by M.J. I sent it in to The Watchmaker. 2 days later I received an aknowledgement of receipt and 4 days later I received the watch and transmitter back working. Battery replaced. $25 included the battery, labor and shipping. Good job Watchmaker! read more

My watched stopped suddenly, so I searched for a place to have the battery changed and was in the Stoneham area, so I stopped in at The Watchmaker. They appeared very friendly and professional, gave me a printed receipt, took my cell phone number, and I left to walk around while they checked out my watch. About 20 minutes later, they called me back to the store. It turned out my battery was fine, they cleaned and adjusted a few things and sent me on my way, without charging me a dime. My watch now works perfectly well. I will definitely go back whenever I have any watch issues and would highly recommend The Watchmaker in Stoneham. read more

Last year I brought my Tag Heuer in for a battery replacement with the idea that I was supporting a local business. I was charged $50, which seemed rather high considering the jeweler near my office had always charged $5.00. The Watchmaker sent it out, I picked it up two weeks later, and within a month, the battery died. When I called the business, I was told I'd have to pay the full fee to have the battery replaced again. I opted not to return, and since getting the Apple Watch, the Tag has been sitting in my jewelry box. A few months ago, I called the Watchmaker and inquired about replacing the battery. Again, I was told it would be sent out, and quoted a price of $35-50.00. I brought it to a Melrose shop, the battery was replaced on site for $4.00, and is still ticking. I'm in agreement with other reviewers about this biz being a thief. read more

Both quoted me $4.00 for the battery and both told me they would not have charged me for labor. I went to the jewelers to inquire about having my watch repaired and they quoted me for a price that was almost as much as what the watch was worth!! I felt like they were just trying to get me to buy a new watch. I knew that it could be repaired. But paying that much just didn't seem worth it. A friend of mine recommended The Watchmaker, so I thought I'd check it out before chucking my watch. Not only was the price fair, it came back cleaned for less than my jeweler quoted for the same repair. Brought my watch in for repairs twice now because of the location. Both times I got the same quote $395 for maintenance service. Two different issues with the same results apparently. The first time I declined the service and brought it to a watch shop in Harvard square which fixed it for $50. Amazing how The Watchmaker says the timing is off and needs an overhaul. Clearly that wasn't the case. A year later I bring my watch back in to The Watchmaker. They tell me they can't fix it and need to send it away. I'm told they can send it in for me and I'll get the quote to fix it along and only have to pay for shipping. They spun it as they would do me a solid to send it in. I get the quote THREE WEEKS LATER... $395 for maintenance service. Isn't that ironic. I call and ask for the quote from the manufacturer. They would not provide it. Getting my watched shipped back ASAP. Watch your quotes from this group and shop your service around. Disappointing customer service, order urgency, and pricing. ***To the business response, I would challenge you to post one thing about my post that is inaccurate. My experience is a mirror image of Joe T's. I brought in my Citizen EcoDrive for a crown and stem replacement. 3 weeks went by (I waited to see how long it would take them to contact me by phone or email) and I got tired of waiting. I called and the man said he would check on it and get back to me. A week went by and no word. I called again and the tech in charge of fixing my watch tells me he is waiting for the parts. And he was on vacation for one week. Well it's now in it's 5th week. I think if build a Citizen Ecodrive from grass blades and twigs I would get a watch back on my wrist faster. Last time I go to them turtles...or moles. Depends on what makes them so slow! read more

Completely ineffective repairing a mechanical Omega watch: after taking it there twice (first time for 6 months) it still stopped every day. The owner was reduced to telling me the watch had to be wound manually every night (presumably the fact that this wasn't needed for the first 30 years I owned it was a fluke!). Ended up sending the watch to Omega in Switzerland: took 10 weeks, cost less (yes, less!) than this place and came back absolutely perfect! Omega in Switzerland delivered the precision workmanship and professionalism that I never got from this little neighborhood store. Very disappointing. I brought an old Cyma in for a cleaning. First I was told I would hear from them with a price within a week. After three weeks of calling and being promised a call back they quoted $400. for a cleaning! I told them I would take it somewhere else, so they charged me $45. for my "free" estimate. Never again. Terrible service. I went there to drop off a Victorinox watch that was under warranty. The Victorinox customer service rep told me that the watch was under warranty and to bring it to The Watchmaker in Stoneham to get it fixed. I drove all the way from Lowell and was declined service. I was told that "it's probably not under warranty because I bought it on Amazon" - Probably? What does that mean? I definitely drove 30 miles to drop it off and I was definitely told by the company who manufactures the watch to get it fixed here. A resectable business would have confirmed their warranty concerns with the manufacturer before turning me away. A business that makes a living fixing and selling watches should be a little more respectiful of people's time. read more
