Instead of fighting the notorious Houston traffic, I decided to pay $3.25 each way for the Park & Ride service. The trip took about 45 minutes each way. It was worth the money and time, I was chilling with my MP3 music on the bus. I got off the bus fresh, relax, and migraine free both ways. Safety was not an issue since there was so many riders at the station even at 6:30 a.m. The only complaint I got was that the seat was a little on the hard side. Definitely will take the Park & Ride again.

The fare is only $1.25 each way and it certainly beats having to pay for parking in these congested areas, however the ride isn't always pleasant. Homeless people continue to use the train, spread out on the benches and hang out to take advantage of the air conditioned cars among the hot Houston summers. Over the past year or so I have noticed that there are more fare inspectors, outfitted in neon yellow shirts, however these hasn't proven to be effective in reducing the homeless presence. Over the years I have seen people smoking on the training, sleeping, and even masturbating....yikes.

For $1.25, I'd say that it's fantastic. Trains seemed to run often enough to fit my needs, they were clean and they were speedy. Quiet (compared to the steel on wheels of Boston and New York) and modern (compared to London or Paris), the trains don't go all that far but they go far enough to allow a tourist like me to forsake a car rental and parking for getting around. Very simple system which operates on a proof-of-purchase system. You will need to keep your ticket handy as more than half of my rides had a fare inspector on board. You get to ride for a solid four hours for that buck and a quarter. Awesome!

Imagine my delight when I found a bus route that goes all around downtown Houston (conveniently taking me from my hotel to the barber shop) and best of all....it's free! The Greenlink is a downtown circulator that takes you all around the central business district. I took it from Houston Center up to Lousiana and Jefferson. Then I took it back after my haircut. The bus was clean, there was almost nobody on it and it was fast. Houston, I recommend you start using this before the funding dries up and it goes away. If you work downtown, use it to go to lunch somewhere different. The buses come very quickly (every 6-7 minutes) and it's free!

$1.00 transportation!? YES PLEASE!!!…read more I had never been to Galveston before, but arrived a few days early for a cruise that I was taking that left from the city port. Our hotel was on seawall but we were told that "The Strand" (shopping area) was a place that we needed to check out. We took a Lyft but as we were travelling we noticed the cutest little trolleys passing by. After a quick Google search, we learned that it was public transportation and only cost $1.00 to ride. After we were done shopping, we decided to hop on one for a "tour". We had no idea where we would be going but were up for the adventure. The trolley is BEAUTIFUL inside. Very shiny wood and just so pretty. There was only 2 other people on our ride. It took us back around through the shopping area and then travelled on down to the seawall. It literally stopped a block from our hotel. This was so great. Note- MUST have cash. No change. You drop a $1 bill into a box upon getting onto the trolley.

Uber generally gets me to where I wanna go in Houston for relatively cheap, considering the sheer size of this city. There always seem to be people available nearby and have never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a ride or so. Prices are going up. It seems like the drivers are getting pinched more and more. The drivers are often interesting people. You don't really know who you're going to get- it's fun chatting them up, but some just wanna be left alone. I wish there was a setting in the app to let you or the driver know if the other person would rather be left alone. Maybe we can even try and look 50 at 90. Now there's a challenge. Easily one of the worst highways imaginable in the history of the world, this is 290. I really don't like driving on 290 from the 610 all the way up to the distant suburbs. Once you get past Cypress, it becomes absolutely fine because at that point you're talking about going out into the countryside, and it's the Houston segment which has been under construction for what seems like the last 50 years that is a big problem, and I avoid it whenever I can. It's not as dangerous as 59 in terms of crash volume, but it's every bit as annoying and backed up, much like 45 north out of H-town.
