The food was great. I had the fish and chips. My girlfriend had the salmon with spinach. My meal was amazing, but I really enjoyed the occasional sample of her salmon. The sauce of the salmon was sweet, but savory. The staff was also nice. Our waitress answered all of our questions and was very friendly. We both ordered cocktails. I had the "Prescription Julep" and she had the "Margarita". Both drinks were extremely strong. But, I enjoy strong drinks...so that was ok with me (I had to finish her margarita though). Overall, solid place to try in Trastevere. Pretty average prices for Rome. We paid about 50 Euros for two meals and two cocktails. read more

While you're in Rome, you will find plenty of restaurants with the exact same menu and it can get tricky to discern between which Bucatini all'Amatriciana or Cacio e Pepe is the best (hint: for the Bucatini, I really do think Baylon's is best!). The thing that really sets Baylon Cafe apart from the rest is that the owners, who are an incredible family from Calabria (south of Italy) have a lot of menu items featuring incredible Calabrian products and family recipes. Just some background: I came to Baylon last year and sat for dinner, then struck up a friendship with the staff. I learned that all of the Calabrian menu items were personally brought up by the owners from Calabria - even some homemade items from the owner's mother and father!!! What other restaurant can say that they import incredible items right from the source (PS, I accompanied them on a trip to Calabria and they knew ALL of the folks foraging for the mushrooms or bottling the wine, or heck, MAKING the cheese and salumi!!!!). It was incredible!! Listen, if you are going to be in Italy for a few days, I guarantee you'll get tired of Carbonara after a while. Instead, tuck into some amazing marinated vegetables (Antipasto Calabrese), or the INCREDIBLE Salsicce Calabrese e Fagioli (beans in a flavourful tomato sauce and hand made Calabrian sausages - the recipe is a family one from Francesca, who you can usually see working the till!). Also, just sit for a while, and even if you don't speak Italian, talk to the waiters and ask for advice as to where you should go and what you should eat/see/do while in Trastevere! Up front, I have to commend the service and the staff here. They seemed to be very accommodating, moving tables and chairs so we could sit where we wanted, and when it came to the food, they bent over backwards to accommodate my picky travel companion and made sauces just for her, including spicy mustard (by mixing chili oil and dijon/white wine mustard) and marinara sauce. The food here was good - we tried the bruschetta, the pasta, the meatballs, the rabbit (yes, they have rabbit), the prosciutto with melon, and the chicken. Plus fries. :D . Everything was delicious. They also play great music and you'll find the staff sometimes dancing to the playlist, so you know both customers and employees alike enjoy the music here. The restaurant is also attractively decorated, with an indoor and an outdoor area. Great service, good food, and a relaxing atmosphere. It's a winning combination. read more

Awesome coffee, OK-ish cornetti, interesting array of pastries for breakfast (served buffet style. Yes, seriously), OK food, great cocktails, cool interior, free & fast WiFi so good to work with your laptop. Oh and a nice, litte terrace. That's Baylon Cafè for ya, in a nutshell. Those juices, on the other, they're rocking it! Fruits, vegetables, including half a carrot / kiwi / celery stick in your glass for garnish. Which I love, it only means I'm getting more vegetables in, which I otherwise wouldn't. They have 8 different juices on the menu and you can also ask for a mix of your own likings. Just tell them your favourite ingredients and they'll make it on the spot. Best idea: have a juice + caffe doppio in the sun outside. Best. Way. To start your day! read more

I had a wonderful dinner at the Baylon Cafe yesterday. The spaghetti with clam sauce was the best I ever had hands down. My compliments to the chef who created a dish fit for the gods. My wife had the most amazing salmon in a citrus sauce with spinach that too was outstanding. This was all complimented by some incredible pickled array of vegetables as an appetizer that were absolutely delicious. The house wine is all you have to order in Rome to get a good cup of wine. The environment at this place was fantastic with staff that go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful time. read more

Came for a croissant and a tea. The guy behind the bar did not appreciate my bad Italian "it's called a croissant du chocolate not a chocolate croissant that one has Nutella" ... come on man, I'm trying! He either doesn't like his life/job or doesn't like tourists... which means maybe he should pick a different district to work. He was also upset that I called the milk leche because I forgot and used the Spanish word. Again, trying at least! Anyways the croissant and tea were great and it's a cute outdoor space. I'll go back tomorrow and maybe the waiters will be in a better mood. Also as a tip this place didn't show up on yelp as a breakfast joint but they have an extensive "American" breakfast. Sea bass ravioli was good. Fettuccini ragu beef chianina and spaghetti frutti di mar with shrimp tartare were okay. They're supposed to be famous for their Zabaione dessert, but it was disappointing: super sweet and not that interesting (it's a runny custard in a nice pastry cup with chocolate bits). The tiramisu was really good with a light coffee flavour and lot of cream. They charge 2€ for a jug of (tap?) water. 52€ total for three people. read more

This place looks very cool inside. Low lighting, industrial pipes and the most extensive array of spirits I've seen so far in any Italian eatery. This is the extent of my praise for Baylon. We stopped here after we found our first choice was closed for the holiday (a commonality in the middle of August apparently). We wanted to check the menu first but the host was trying to usher us to a table. I had to insist that we would let him know if we would like to eat here so he would give us space. Very pushy. While we were looking at the menu, he loomed over us asking what we were looking for. I don't like being pushed so this was a big red flag for me. We decided to sit and have drinks - a decent Campari spritz and an Italian IPA. My wife and I ordered some seafood aperetivos that took a while to get to us and were fairly bland compared to what we've had for less at other establishments. We decided to get the check and get dinner elsewhere. Besides the craft beer, I'm not sure what I'd come back here for. The service was mediocre and the food left a lot to ask for. The food and drinks are very good for the area. They offer a good selection of both mixed drinks and wines. However, the customer service is very poor. Servers are slow to carry out what is supposed to be provided (bread, condiments, etc.) and they are unwilling to be helpful or makeup mistakes. read more

I initially posted a really favourable review for Baylon, but (a first for me in Yelp): I'm updating it. We came here about five times, and while the first time was charming, subsequently it dawned on us the servers were quite slow and disinterested. Also we tried to order hot chocolate and we're cryptically refused, apparently because it had run out but I think it was not an acceptable time of day or something. So yep. We visited Baylon Cafe our first night in Trastevere as it was near where we stayed. Their food menu isn't anything special, but they do have an extensive wine menu and seem to have a good cocktail selection. The pasta was alright but mine was not very hot. We had two waiters, one of which was nice, the other was not great. He offered dessert which we said, "no thank you," to and he tried two more times to push dessert on us before getting the check as we requested. When he brought the check, we asked if it was possible to split it in half. He first said no, then said he could. When charging the first card, he attempted multiple times to overcharge by adding extra 0s. We said multiple times that's not right and he kept smirking. Finally he put the correct amount in, but it was clear he was attempting to overcharge us as tourists. I wouldn't recommend. read more

We have been to this place once for dinner, once for breakfast and twice for cocktails. And we loved each time. Staff is really friendly and knowledgeable. They will make an effort to explain you about the cocktails and the food. The wine they recommended was also really good. Good price/quality. The Bombay cocktail is my favorite. For breakfast you should try Moroccan breakfast, but if you are conservative you can't go wrong with the pancakes. My girlfriend and I were visiting the area and wanted to stop somewhere for a quick bite to eat which was our first mistake. Our second? Not running out after we saw the disgusting condition of a neglected bathroom. The door was so bad I almost got locked in which I wish had happened so I wouldn't have to endure the next hour and a half of a disappointing experience. After waiting a long time, a disinterested waiter took our order. We decided on a slice of cake and he warned us that it would take a long time to prepare. We were glad that he did that even though he did not specify it would take for a pile of crumbs to arrive after being unattended to for nearly an hour. He came and apologized and said the cake "broke" and it could be prepared again which we politely declined. This one star review does not only reflect the quality of the food (even though it was underwhelming) but rather reflects the careless and rude service. He only offered a small discount on a menu item that was inexcusable to serve to paying customers. On the outside this place looks a lot better than it is.
