This review is just for Bayleaf's lunch menu. The store looks like a great resource on Whidbey Island for gourmet foods, wine, cheese, gifts. We ordered the Italian and Banh mi sandwiches. The service, lovely patio seating and crusty baguette were all good. The sandwiches were a little bland- decent but nothing remarkable. It is primarily a store vs. a restaurant so my expectations were not super high. read more

The place had a wonderful selection of wines and specialty foods, although it felt like our entire family was being pushed away when wanting to order off their small menu and eat lunch. We were eager and excited to try this spot, but the woman at the front responded to us concerned she didn't have an enough bread to make us our food. We then tried to order the cheese basket, and she said, "that's not to eat here, you can only take it to go". She then recommended we go to a different place to eat. She felt overwhelmed and frustrated, and was treating my entire family as though we were an inconvenience. I'm pregnant with twin babies and came in very hungry and needing nourishment, and so this service really left me confused and hurt. I hope this doesn't happen to the next customer. read more

Fantastic gourmet food store for those with sophisticated palates. Cheese, meats, charcuterie, olives, crackers are just the beginning. Wine, butters from far away lands, pates, chips possibly made by magical fairies. Cook books, chocolates, homewares, if you are in Coupeville this is a must. read more

No visit to Whidbey Island is complete without a visit to Coupeville! And no visit to Coupeville is complete with out a stop at Bayleaf. They have an incredible selection of pantry goodies, kitchen wares, hostess gifts, and above all the charcuterie. This is a great place to discover you actually do love a tangy blue cheese. We love to pop in to get a few new items to enjoy over the weekend -- but the team that works here are all incredibly nice and will go out of their way to pack you up your pate on ice so it will survive the ferry ride back home too. read more

We picked up a charcuterie board to go with a bottle of wine and it was absolutely perfect to enjoy sitting at a picnic table by the dock

Ordered the $18 cheese sample plate and this is what I was given... they did not have the "plates" on display and they talked it up significantly more than it actually was. Once I ordered and paid for it they produced this ready made plate with basically nothing on it. The wine was still reasonably priced. I would not buy food. Just get wine and some olives. read more

What a nice place. Staff is so friendly. Great selection of foods and beverages to make the perfect meal or picnic. Very nice wine selection. There's an outdoor, pet friendly patio with a view of the water. Staff freshened the water bowl and brought a small piece of deli meat for our dog. The sandwich menu is small, maybe 5 selections is all. And the fresh baguette is the only bread choice. I had the Italian and my wife had the Caprese. Both were really delicious. read more

Wow, I love Bayleaf. These ladies run an amazing little shop and give great recommendations, every time. My favorite sandwich is the francois - rosemary ham, brie cheese, roasted tomatoes, all on a crusty roll. Wow, it is so good! It's warmed just the perfect amount, so the ham is warm and the brie is melty. It's definitely my go-to lunch in Coupeville. You can also get cheese / charcuterie plates to go (called "picnic plates"). They plate a few of their choices on a paper plate, cover it with saran, and you're good to go for a picnic. I've been alternately very impressed with their cheese offerings on the picnic plate, and just kind of meh. Sometimes they hit it out of the park, sometimes I don't really like their offerings. I do wish they'd let you select at least a type or two of cheese / meat (i.e. "I like soft cheeses," or "Nothing too bland"), because then I know I'd always like every cheese / meat they put on the plate. Their wine recommendations have always been on point. They have a few bottles / cans of beer / cider in the front fridge area, or you can just buy a bottle from their good selection. I usually just ask for recommendations, and they are very good at respecting price points (most wines are less than $15 anyways) and providing you a few different options based on your taste, instead of just pushing one. They do have different prices for tourists & locals though - not sure what that's about, but it's never affected me because it doesn't change the price of sandwiches, picnic plates, or wine. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. I love it so much. All of their products are so carefully curated and every one of the staff seems to have a deep knowledge about all of their items. They are super attentive and make great recommendations. During the pandemic, they have been offering seasonal boxes at a flat rate. (Maybe they were always on offer and I just noticed during the pandemic. Anyway...) The seasonal box contains a hand picked array of products along a shared theme with description and recommendations for use. It's a treat I've looked forward to with each change in season. They also offer catering for paella. I happened to be there a day (pre-COVID) when they were selling boxes of fresh cooked paella prepared on their patio on a giant (25-50 person) paella pan. Fantastic. This store would be a find anywhere, Coupeville, Seattle, New York City... If you are on Whidbey, it is worth the trip. read more

If you're a food or wine nerd, this is your place. Shelves stocked with gourmet pantry items (both imported and local) - a lot of stuff I've rarely seen elsewhere - wine, cheese, charcuterie. I wanted to buy everything in the store, but alas, settled for some chocolate with sesame and lemon verjus filling (I'm telling you, fancy!) Also bought some sandwiches - they're not super big, but the bread and fillings were quality and very tasty (although if it's later in the day, these might not be on offer). I was visiting a friend and we wanted to have a wine tasting day. So, the Bayleaf was our first stop. We went inside, ordered a glass of a blush wine, and sat outside since it was a super nice day. I took a sip of the wine, it wasn't my style. It was really bitter and tasted old. Also, there were a few bees. So we took out drinks inside. Despite the above, I rated 4 stars because 1) they cant help the bees 2) the lady was really friendly and 3) the Bayleaf had a great selection of wines and merchandise. This little Shop is filled with specialty wines, olive oils, pasta and chocolate, making it a fun stop while visiting Coupeville. What a find this place is! The Wife and I love to visit the Island but we had never stopped into Bayleaf before last night. We went to Coupeville for the Christmas Parade (love small town parades) and once it was done we were going to head to Toby's but it was packed to the gills. There are not a lot of dinner options on Front St. so we started to head over to the Fish Bowl which is next door to Bayleaf. We went in on a whim and fell in love! Excellent selection of cheese and meats and the wine selection looks like it has some very nice bottles. There are many delectable delights in the fridge. We saw duck breast and duck sausage. There was butter from Normandy and smoked Albacore. One great find after another. We decided right then that a "picnic dinner" was the thing to do. The very friendly woman behind the counter offered to put together a plate for us with a selection of cheese, salami, pate, with crackers. In addition she included sun-dried tomatoes, olives packed with anchovies, cornichons and pickeled onions. We took this back to our B&B and had a wonderful dinner accompanied by the Chinook Red wine I bought in Langley earlier. I sure hope that Coupeville can sustain this gem of a shop. Hell, I wish this kind of shop was here in Ballard! We sure could use something like this. read more

Owner Beth Graves has created a wonderful local institution, featuring a wide selection of imported and domestic wines and cheeses and grocery items from around the world - excellent olive oils and vinegars, deli items like cured olives and cornichons, local and regional products like Fran's chocolates and Screaming Banshee bread, and exotics like imported Turkish coffee. Pick a bottle of wine and a loaf of crusty artisan bread, have Beth or the friendly and knowledgeable staff put together a plate of cheese and deli items, and head out for a picnic on the Coupeville Wharf or out to the beach at Ebey's Landing - a perfect day! Went here to gather up some goodies for a picnic. When we were in another shop in Coupeville (Jan McGregor Studios) we asked about good food, the sales person said nice things about most of the eateries in Coupeville, but suggested on a sunny day (like that day) it was fun to go get crackers, cheeses, meats, and 'stuff' (they have a great wine section) and go out to the wharf and have a picnic. SO that is what we did! Very nice! We'd suggest you go to this store. They also have a seating area in the store. Loved it! Jan McGregor Studios is Japanese antiques, clothes, fabrics (silks and cottons) - 40 yrs running and FANTASTIC too! LOVE Coupeville. We go down there at least once a month! OH and I heard Front Street Grill (we did a not so good review on it a couple yrs ago) is MUCH better than it was when we were there after it first opened. Glad to hear it.
