I want to preface this review by saying I am of Hispanic descent, so I may naturally have a higher bar when it comes to Latin cuisine and what I expect in terms of AUTHENTICITY and flavor... I arrived with my family and there is a sign at the entrance instructing guests to "please wait to be seated." Unfortunately, there was no host or hostess present at the front, so we stood waiting and tried to get the attention of the only visible staff member in the restaurant. He appeared to be working alone behind the bar counter and didn't notice us right away. This already created a slightly disorganized first impression. If a restaurant is going to require guests to wait to be seated, there really should be someone assigned to the front to greet and seat customers..... Once seated, the same gentleman brought us menus, but it took quite a while for him to come back and take our orders because he was handling multiple roles at once--taking orders, preparing drinks at the bar, and bringing out food. It honestly felt like he was doing the job of several people, which is not fair to him or the customers. On to the food: as someone who is Latina and familiar with both Cuban and Filipino cuisine (through family and community), I was surprised by the execution. Appetizers were served in very small portions-- only two or four pieces per order--such as the lumpia, which felt overpriced for measely two pieces. The pricing overall felt quite high for the portion sizes even with 4... Flavor-wise, the food leaned heavily toward a more Americanized interpretation. The ropa vieja lacked depth and seasoning compared to what I'm accustomed to, and the pancit bihon tasted closer to a salty chow mein-style stir fry rather than the traditional dish...even the noodles used were very different It didn't reflect the authentic balance of flavors associated with Filipino cuisine... Overall, while I appreciate the concept and understand the challenges of running a restaurant, the execution felt inconsistent. Delicious! A friend had been wanting to come here, so we gave it a go for dinner and it was great! Our server (I didn't catch their name) was awesome, checking in on us enough during a slow-paced dinner, giving recommendations, but not being pushy. We ended up splitting a bunch of dishes so we could try more. We had the croquetas, lumpia, crab rangoon dip, vegetable empanadas, and the saffron cream cheese flan. The crab rangoon dip was good, though a bit unexpected-on the sweeter side and not as much crab flavor, but still good. The lumpia and croquetas were pretty 'normal' but with great flavor. The vegetable empandas were fine-nothing wrong with them, just nothing that stood out. The flan was excellent-our server explained it's a hybrid between cheesecake and flan, which was spot on! The texture was great, as was the flavor-the saffron was a nice touch. The ambiance was good, nice decoration without being over the top. The price was great too, even though we split several dishes it was very reasonable. A Cuban and Filipino mashup I never knew I needed. Their main restaurant has received so much hype and I'm glad the diner is a more approachable option if a tasting menu isn't your jam. Pinoy burrito- eggs, sausage , egg. The little sauce it comes with is amazing. Ube pancakes - crispy edges. Fluffy. So good. Get an extra sauce in the side to drizzle. The cola glazed skewers were my favorite. I'd have these over some white rice next time as my meal! Mushroom empanadas were excellent too. Food is great. Would recommend trying and I would revisit again. Just a few suggestions/some feedback: Music is too loud. Had a hard time holding a conversation with someone sitting just across from me. Ube pancakes - good flavor but kind of odd that it doesn't come with any type of syrup or cream on the side to dip or pour on the pancakes. There's some whipped cream on top and decorative ube drizzle around the pancakes but it needs something on the side to dip/pour since eating that many pancakes can get quite drying. The price for the lumpia is quite steep. $14 for four. These weren't particularly my favorite. Pork belly adobo was my favorite. My one critique is that perhaps a little more sauce would be great. BBQ chicken skewers and silog longanisa - no complaints. # of staff -- I dined around noon on a Saturday. This was my first time so I don't know how many staff are usually present, but it was obvious from the get go that they were understaffed even for such a small place. Came in at 10 AM on a Sunday by myself and was immediately seated at the bar (had numerous parties going on but lots of tables available). I haven't yet been to the flagship restaurant (will update when I eventually do) and assumed this "diner" version would be very casual. Although the patrons and staff were all relaxed, this is a bit more upscale in presentation than your typical American dinner. The restaurant presents a warm, vibey tropical aesthetic that harkens to the restaurant's Filipino and Cuban cuisines. Filipino breakfast is a simple, yet important aspect of Filipino culture and I am always curious how non-hole-in-the-wall places interpret meat+egg+price. The menu doesn't explicitly tell you this but for the itlog (egg) rice plates, you can do a half order of different meats, so I did the Tocino and longanisa, with a side of Ube pancakes. Tocino - you can tell by the color not being bright red that this is an in-house made tocino. It was tender, juicy, and not very sweet like your typical tocino. Additionally, it wasn't sticky/glazey like normal. Only minor complaint was that I wish there was a little more char. Longanisa - I THINK this was also made in-house but I'm a little less sure than the tocino. Very similar notes in comparison to the tocino in terms of differences with your store bought. It came with a tomato-onion salsa. Ube Pancakes - two for a side ($7), which is perfect for me. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The staff were nice, though they seemed a little stressed and preoccupied. A young girl that I'm guessing is related to the owner or workers took my plates. I'm giving it a 4/5 since I can't give a 4.5. It wasn't mind blowing so I can't give it a 5/5 but I'm happy with what I got. Everything was delicious. Service was great and the space is designed fairly well. There are half and whole sizes for many of the items, which I kind of found helpful. Hands down my favorite are the croquetas with smoked jamon filling and juffran aioli. I could eat a bucket of these. It's my favorite style of filling and the crunchy exterior is great. Can't find great croquetas like this anywhere else in Chicago. The saffron cream cheese flan with caramelized white chocolate sauce was very good. It's a slightly denser flan, a little like a cheesecake, and very rich and creamy. I strongly recommend. I also enjoyed the ropa vieja, black beans, maduros, and garlic rice. The ropa vieja is probably the best in Chicago and is pretty comparable to the elite Cuban food one can only really find in Miami. I enjoyed the crab rangoon dip with lump crab, cream cheese, sweet chili sauce, and fried saltine crackers. Exactly as you'd expect: take the filling out of crab rangoon and it's a dip. I would prefer actual crab rangoons personally though. Bistek was good, just not my favorite. There's a lot of bone, so be aware of that, along with being tougher. Flavors are great. Pandan Mojito and Ocean Drive Daiquiri were both good but the mojito had blended mint in it, which made it difficult and slightly unpleasant to drink. I'm convinced that the best breakfast comes from Filipino places. We decided to split the ube pancakes and two breakfast burritos: the Pinoy and the Cubano. The pancakes were the best I've ever had from a restaurant. Incredibly light and fluffy, they would tear apart with ease. They also weren't overly sweet with a good ube flavor throughout. This consistency is what I will now try and emulate when I make pancakes. The breakfast burritos were absolute units. Starting with the Pinoy, the longanisa was super tasty and paired well with everything. Plenty of eggs, crispy potatoes, melted cheese, some fresh vegetables with the salsa, and a sturdy but crisp tortilla. Not only did the food taste good, it was so colorful. The Cubano was very different and amazing in its own way. The brisket was tender and was great with the eggs and beans. The thing that elevated this was the perfectly cooked plantains which provided some sweetness. Only thing I didn't care for was the sauce which neither needed. While the Pinoy slightly edged out the Cubano, both were delicious and you can't go wrong. To sum everything up, this place is the best. We were in the mood for Filipino brunch and the recently opened Bayan Ko Diner had a menu that checked off all our cravings. Everything sounded so good! Luckily, there were five of us, so we decided to order a bunch of dishes. The Sisig Shishito Hash was very flavorful, with nice chunks of pork throughout. The croquetas were a yummy snack. The Pinoy burrito was good and filling, just wish it had a bit more longanisa and less/smaller potato pieces. The pork adobo was well flavored, a bit sweet, and very generously portioned--the meat or rice ratio was surprisingly high. The lumpia Shanghai were good. We made use of the sauces/sawsawan on the table. Yay for the vinegar with sili (chili pepper)! We also got the crab Rangoon dip, which I only got a tiny taste of, but it was rich and flavorful. The biggest hit for me was the halo halo banana split. Save room for this! The ube, pandan, and Sky Flakes toffee were our ice cream choices (made by local favorite Milky Milky Ice Cream). I'm so excited that Bayan Ko expanded! The diner space is charming and we loved the wallpaper and decor. The bathrooms were also really cute and clean. We came on a Tuesday morning for brunch and the restaurant was maybe 30% full so it was a nice laid back vibe. I came here for a casual Sunday dinner. I was dining alone, so it was nice that the restaurant offers half portion sizes for most dishes on the menu. I tried the lumpia and the bistek which were really good. The lumpia is unique in that there are chucks of pork loaded in there, rather than ground pork. Very good quality of meat for a more budget item. The bistek was nice and tender, very sweet and savory flavors, however I felt the dish needed some vegetables or a bright salad to contrast the meat and rice dish. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while. Came in during their happy hour and was surprised they weren't busy. It's probably because its a Monday, but I was totally fine with that! I was greeted instantly when I walked through the door by Caroline and was seated at the bar. I received great customer service all around from Aaron and Caroline and the food came out quickly and it was delicious. Their happy hour deal is great! I got to try most of their app selection on the regular menu for a discounted price. Each app is $5 for a half order except for the wings ($10 for half), but you get 6 hardy wings in this delicious adobe glaze and it comes with a side of garlic rice! The other happy hour items I ordered was the lumpias (delicious), the empanadas (great and fully filled with meat), and croquetas (pretty good, but lacked flavor). Each app came with their own sauce that compliments the dish really well. I could not leave without trying a one of their desserts. I ordered the Saffron Cream Cheese flan. It did NOT disappoint! If you are a lover of flan and Cheesecake like me then please make sure you try it. It like 8f flan and cheesecake had a baby. Best combination of a dessert. Then I ordered the Ropa Vieja to go. I will let you know how it tastes, but based on what food I had so far. I it won't disappoint. The restaurant is small giving it a more intimate atmosphere and decor is cute and lovely giving me the feeling like I was in a cafe in Havana, Cuba. I was pretty excited reading about the opening of Bayan Ko Diner and immediately booked a reservation for when my friends and I would be in Chicago. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, giving you the feel that you're no longer in Chicago. The food is advertised as Filipino and Cuban and it is, I just thought they'd be more fused. Overall the food was fairly good but there wasn't much wow factor. The puffed french toast was probably one of my favorites which is surprising since I prefer savory to sweet. I usually love lumpia but for some reason theirs just seemed okay. We also got the sisig hash, the croquettas, spanish tortilla and pork belly adobo. The croquettas felt like there was too much breading that overpowered the filling. The tortilla, sisig hash and adobo were as expected but not the best I've had. I've been to the original, fine dining location, so when the diner space opened in the old Glenn's (RIP), I was excited to see something worthy take up the mantle. Gone are the cereal boxes and the chalkboard specials of its predecessor, but the unique offerings here will definitely inspire you. They've done a nice job with the space, it looks really fresh and modern inside. We got a ton of food for brunch. I started with a cafe con leche, which was really good, but all the condensed milk sank to the bottom, and I didn't have a spoon to stir it up with. We got lumpia and the crab rangoon dip to start, and I was in my happy place. The sauce with the lumpia was really nice, something different. The crab rangoon dip is definitely a star on this menu, sure to be a dish to go viral. The fried saltines served with it are so crazy and inventive. It took a while for our mains to come after that, noticeably long, and the service became a little disconnected in the interim. Never unfriendly, but our appetizer plates and my coffee cup sat for a long while, even when our server passed by our counter seats. They were very busy, and I was catching up with a friend, so in the end it was fine. I got the Pinoy breakfast burrito and my friend got their fancy French toast, and we did a bit of sharing. The French toast had a super crunchy exterior, and the guava sauce really elevated it. My burrito was good, but the salsa inside it was super oniony, and I wished I'd ordered it without the salsa. The eggs, potatoes, cheese and sausage played really well together, but I'm not a fan of raw onion in general, and for me the onion overpowered the burrito. It was pretty easy to scoop it out, however, and the garlicky sauce they serve on the side more than made up for it. We couldn't help but stare at the case of donuts, as we were sat immediately next to their donut case. We snuck in a guava donut as a little treat and holy cow, it was fantastic. Bayan Ko has been a place I've been trying to go for the longest. The Cuban-Filipino fusion sounds so interesting to me and I was amazed to see they opened a diner version of their restaurant. We came for brunch and ordered the Filipino BBQ skewers, sisig shishito hash, and pork adobo. Filipino BBQ Skewers The skewers were tasty and the meat was tender. My main issue was the temperature--they were served lukewarm. I understand food is prepped ahead and reheated on the grill, but these really could have been served hotter. BBQ skewers should come out sizzling, or at least close to it. Pork Adobo The pork belly pieces were cut too large, and the fatty portions needed much more rendering. Flavor-wise, the dish leaned far too sweet, with no noticeable tang or acidity from vinegar, which is essential to adobo. My husband, who grew up in the U.S. and has a simpler palate when it comes to Filipino food, or any food really, thought it was great. However, as someone familiar with traditional adobo, it fell short. Sisig Shishito Hash The first few bites were enjoyable, but as I continued eating, the same issue became apparent: a lack of acid and brightness. The shishito peppers added very little heat or flavor and did not contribute much to the dish. It also did not feel very authentic; they just chopped up pork belly and called it sisig. Mayo was added, and it lacked the citrusy punch and spice that define a good sisig. Overall Experience The décor was great, and we appreciated being seated at the bar despite not having a reservation for a noon arrival. That said, do not come here expecting an authentic Filipino dining experience. It is clear the menu has been adjusted to cater to the neighborhood's palate. This was especially apparent when we walked in, there was not a single Filipino diner in sight besides my husband and me. I genuinely want to support Filipino-owned establishments, but this meal fell short, particularly if you are familiar with how these dishes are traditionally prepared and meant to taste like. read more

Coming from a filipino background, I was excited to try this spot since it has shown up a lot on instagram. The restaurant was well lit by windows. The food is a bit mixed reviews. Lumpia with mysterious sweet vinegar spicy oil sauce was great! I would love to know what it was made up of. The Sisig Shishito Hash I was excited for but it was more a skillet then sisig. The pork was not crispy & cut thick, the potatoes were small & mashed, and there could have been more shishito peppers to help with the fat. The ube pancakes were not too sweet & had good pancake texture. The service was friendly for letting us come eat at 2:20pm when the restaurant closed at 3:00pm.
