This is a detailed review of our experience in the entire kitchen upgrade project from start to finish. We wanted to do a facelift of our old outdated kitchen without breaking the bank, with new cabinets and countertop. Being well aware of high cost of everything in San Francisco, and our house an old 1980's construction, we had a tough job of keeping the project within affordable budget. For the project, we started by first finding a cabinetry place. We went with Timeless Kitchen, as they have good quality mid-price semi-custom cabinetry and they also have design service. The cabinets usually take 6-8 weeks to arrive. The next step was to find someone to do the cabinets installation. This was the craziest, I called almost every kitchen contractor in SF. Many came home to look at the project, then provided ridiculous quotes. Also many were being pushy to make us do additional work like flooring, changing electricity, plumbing, etc, which could easily double the cost! We were so discouraged that we almost gave up on the idea of this kitchen project, seemed like we would ever be able to afford in this city this lifetime. Finally after persistent research we found Bay Install, through Yelp. David, owner of Bay Install came by and gave a reasonable quote for the work we were looking at. He is straightforward and honest, wont spare time in small talks. His initial upfront estimate included costs of demolition and dumping fee of old cabinets, cabinets and countertop installation, hood and lights installation, hooking of plumbing and dishwasher. He also called out during initial quote itself that there would be a small additional cost for materials and if any surprise comes up. David was always responsive on phone or text for all our queries. This was our first home renovation project and we went with David with all our heart. The project took 3 weeks from start to finish. Here i am breaking down the steps. For the cabinets delivery needed coordinations between David and the cabinetry company which went smooth. He was informed of the exact date and time of the cabinet delivery. Based on the confirmed date, he started the demolition work 2 days prior. At this point he demolished and hauled the existing cabinets and sink, uninstalled all appliances - sink, diswasher, stove, exhaust fan, then prepped up the plumbing, electrical and patched the walls before the new installation starts. On day of cabinet delivery David ensured to be present on the venue to confirm everything was delivered correctly without any damage. Next day he started to systematically install the new cabinets. At this stage he showed exemplary skill. Our house being really old 1980's, he was challenged with tricky problems like walls and floors not level or the roof being too low, so he had to figure how to adjust height of cabinets without being noticeable. David took his time to work around those issues, and showed his highest skill and experience. Meantime, we had to choose our countertop stone. We checked out many places around the Bay area like and finally we chose beautiful textured natural Quartzite stone slabs from Artistic Stone Kitchen & Bath. They reserved and held the slabs at the store till the day of installation. On the day of countertop installation, David himself picked up the slabs from the store early morning. He has a countertop installation team who came in at noon, they cut and honed the slabs at our site and quickly installed the countertops. The countertops were installed within half a day. We are very happy with the outcome. The joins of the slabs look seamless. We also had a piece of slab installed as the stove backsplash which looks gorgeous. David completed the fine finishing of the kitchen with attention to every detail. Every gap is patched with fillers, installation of the new farmhouse sink, under cabinet lighting, re-plumbing the sink and dishwasher, hardware installation on drawers was all perfection. David is a man of few words, he likes to carefully work on all details taking time, he is skillful and will make any challenge work, he is sincere and honest with his work, takes great pride in the outcome of his work. We were very surprised by how he would tidy up the space at the end of each day.. very rare to see such details. If I could give Bay Install 10 stars, I would! Meticulous, hard-working, fast, problem-solving: These adjectives best describe Bay Install. David was not only quick to respond but he crafted several solutions to achieve perfect results on a slew of home repair projects. David built out one new wardrobe, customized another with two deep, pull-out drawers, repaired a severely damaged drawer underneath my son's trundle bed (a project I feared might be hopeless) and then drilled in two CD towers that had detached from the wall. Ironically, I thought the CD towers would be the easiest project but it took the longest and required David's problem solving and patience. To make best use of the space, he first relocated a phone jack then drilled into a concrete wall using special sinking screws for two IKEA CD towers that, but for a closet door holding one up, were about to fall over. He built out and then customized two IKEA wardrobes and drilled in everything for stability. The Hail Mary project was rescuing my child's clothing drawer underneath his bed that'd bottomed out and been torn off its sliding rail. (The drawers are part of the space-saving design of this IKEA Brimnes bed and much-needed storage). Seriously, that drawer had (3) silver dollar-sized holes created by my child yanking the drawer off its rail. It looked like Dirty Harry had used it for target practice. David drilled into the metal rail and reattached it, thus salvaging the drawer and the possibly the whole bed. David's major projects are kitchens and Yelp reviews attest to his high standards, speed and reliability. David does these smaller jobs like mine when they come along. What a find-- contractor quality work without the insane price tag that so often seems to accompany quotes for workmanship in San Francisco. Over only 3 days of work, our kitchen has been completely upgraded! It is gorgeous! I can't believe I waited so long to do this. The backstory: We recently installed a beautiful Thermador range for our 1910 Bernal Heights home, and realized that the existing backsplash had to be changed, and a completely new hood & ventilation system added. Aargh! why is nothing simple in these old homes? David did excellent, efficient work, -completely installing new ventilation from scratch, -removing unsightly extra pipes from the exterior of our house, -re-tiling the backsplash. On top of this, while the ceiling was open, he -added beautiful ceiling lights Bay Install is the real deal, and David takes pride in his work, and was very accommodating on our project. I found Bay Install on Yelp while looking for an installation company for my kitchen remodel. I decided to use IKEA cabinets, but the company that IKEA recommends was reviewed poorly. I wasn't willing to take a chance. During my search it was hard to tell which businesses are willing to do full remodels, not just instal cabinets. Bay Install did it all. They demolished the prior kitchen, painted our whole loft and added base boards, put the kitchen together and installed it, as well as did our back splash tiling. Every step of the way they made smart, cost effective suggestions that made the flow of the project much better. The woman I hired to do the kitchen design did a terrible job. She left out the sink, and chose cabinets that were entirely too small for the place. Bay Install went above and beyond and even redesigned the kitchen where the prior service failed. David picked out new cabinets that were more appropriate for the space. David let me know that he would have preferred to do the design as well. The website phone number continues to be invalid and just now my 10 year old daughter cut her arm on the drawer that will not close for which they were paid to do. What is the point of Yelp when there is no response to one's complaint? These Bay Install people are crooks and have injured my daughter. The projects were not as straight forward and he managed everything superbly along with any surprises (we found one side of the old closet had no walls). (Example: when pulling down the old wall cabinets, a huge portion of the sheetrock came off with it only to reveal old, nasty rotten wood behind it from a million years ago.) David is amazing. We just finished a 10 month long remodel and I wish I had hired him as our principal contractor, instead of the guy we ended up with. I first worked with David over a year ago to have him purchase, deliver and install all the IKEA living room, desk and media center furniture for my grandparents when we moved them to a Senior Home in Los Gatos. This year, towards the end of our remodel, I called on David to install a wall of bookshelves, kids desk center, laundry room cabinetry and media center cabinetry from IKEA. He came a 7am, and left at midnight! What rock star! When he said he'd do the work in one day I thought No Way - there are too many pieces to assemble. But David always keeps his word. Here we are a few months later and all cabinetry is still working perfectl y- aligned perfectly, cabinet doors still straight, all very solid work - he knows how to make IKEA work well. Do not try to do IKEA assembly yourself, or even let your contractor do it - hire someone like David that knows IKEA inside and out because it can be very quirky stuff. I was really pleased with their work and customer service, so I hired them again to remodel my kitchen.
