Whilst running some errands in Brainerd I decided to take a look and see what else I might want to…read morevisit in the area. I found BDG in the course of doing a bit of online sleuthing for what to do in Beverly, but actually hadn't planned to visit because I knew my time was limited. However, it happened to be near another shop I'd decided to visit, which was very serendipitous since Beverly Dry Goods is a great shop and I'm glad I didn't miss out! The proprietor was really friendly. Most of the time I was in the store (December 22, 2021) I was the only one there, but there was a few minutes when there was one to three others in the store. I also got lucky (for my comfort level, at least) that there were so few folks in, because the woman running the shop mentioned that she might be able to grab a quick bite to eat that day because it had been so busy for the last few days. It's a pretty small store, but they are packed full of stuff. Although it's not solely dry goods, there's a lot of variety in what they sell. You'll find textiles (they had some nice hats and stuff when I was there), barware (mixers, drink accessories, etc.), candles and incense, cards, and so on. I bought some fun glitter for drinks, which I used on New Year's Eve for wine to ring in the new year, but you could easily use it in water/juice/pop or whatever for kids or folks who don't drink alcohol. I also bought an item that I can only describe as incense matches; they're discreet, don't burn long, and don't have a smell that's overpowering or lingers overly much. I find that they're perfect for just about any room in the house; I don't tend to like incense because it's far too strong and the scent hangs around forever, but not with this product. They also recently shared that they have some nonalcoholic mixers coming in, and they occasionally do events--if the timing of it worked for me, I may have gotten a ticket to the Galentine's Day Cocktail Class they're offering this coming week! When I was in, they had a their windows decorated as part of a contest that some of the businesses in Beverly were taking part in. Their decoration was in the style of a Chicago flag, which I loved (and took a couple photos with, which apparently was their objective because after I did I saw that they had a note encouraging people to do so!). Beverly Dry Goods seems like one of those shops that, although they may carry some items pretty regularly due to their popularity, is always on the lookout for new things, seasonal merchandise, and so on so I'm going to keep them in my sights (and follow them on instagram @beverlydrygoods). I'm sure I could find a fun gift for someone here if I needed one, and it's always great to have a place where you can get unique gifts in your back pocket. They're located on South Walden Parkway, which is a short street that I'm pretty sure isn't on the Chicago grid--so north siders, you might miss it the first time! It's also on the Metra Rock Island line, so if you are on that and get off at the 99th street stop you're right next to it--the shop's south wall borders the small parking lot for the Metra station. Street parking in front is limited, but if I recall correctly is also free, and there's additional parking available on the surrounding streets.

For our wedding flowers, Catherine's Garden was suggested to me by 2 previous brides who loved…read moretheir florist! Both brides had mentioned their flowers were absolutely stunning, and that their florist had the most competitive pricing. So I went to Catherine's Garden first. I met with Julie and she made me feel so much better and lowered this bride's anxiety. Not only did she give me new ideas, she had also been able to give me an itemized bill the day I met with her. I went to two other florists and Catherine's Garden beat their costs and customer service. The day of the wedding came and we had a minor floral mishap looking in the grand scheme of the day(the flowers didn't get delivered on time. But instead we're delivered to the hotel. Which was fine, we were going there before the venue anyways!) Despite the set back, Catherine's Garden kept in constant contact with us throughout they few hours, and we had our flowers to us in time for the wedding and for our bridal party pictures. The flowers were stunning. Mine, my girls, the guys, the tables, the ceremony, the reception; absolutely gorgeous. In lieu of the small mishap that occurred, Catherine's Garden COMPLETELY MADE UP FOR IT. I respect them so much for the way they executed five star customer service. They gave me a great partial refund on the flowers that came a little late, and they also sent myself, and three family members a BEAUTIFUL holiday arrangement this week for thanksgiving. To Julie and the staff at Catherine's Garden; this is how good business is done. Our day was amazing, despite a small mishap, we received our flowers on time, and nobody but us knew! (That's a perfect day right?!).... however, the way you responded and handled the situation; I will absolutely recommend and use you in the future. Thank you so much!

Catherine's Garden did the wedding florals for a wedding I coordinated on Saturday--this was the…read moreworst experience I have ever had with a florist. They were supposed to arrive at 11am, we called at noon when they still had not arrived and they said "20 minutes" and argued they were planning to arrive at noon (photographer was due to arrive at 12:30). The flower shop is 20 minutes from the venue. 40 minutes later (12:40pm) a driver arrived with only the bouquets, no ceremony florals and stated the ceremony florals would be another 15-20 minutes. The bouquets and head table florals were not the flowers that were discussed and lacked the "draping/trailing greenery" that was agreed upon. One of the maids of honor added some other greenery she had on hand to fix the bride's bouquet, but most people would have been out of luck. (The bouquets and head table floral were also supposed to have burgundy amaranthus --specifically mentioned in the bid--but not even 1 stem of amaranthus was present.) When the ceremony florals arrived (after 1pm) they were wrong, and the delivery guy looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked about the "ground arch" which was supposed to be 3 pieces to be repurposed at the reception (it arrived as one centerpiece for a podium). It was supposed to be at least knee height, it was about 10 inches tall and didn't even cover a highboy table top. The aisle markers had to be sacrificed to create the ground arch effect after some reworking by the bridal party--again we had to DIY to get something close to what was actually ordered, the florist did not fix it or apologize. So ultimately there were no aisle markers, which had been priced at $450 each. This was unbelievably unprofessional behavior, nothing matched the photos that were agreed upon before signing the contract, and there was no apology or even a partial refund. Do not use this florist for your wedding or any other event if you care about punctuality or actually receiving what you paid for.
