This is a great burger spot in Evanston. It was empty on a weekday lunch. The portions here are pretty large and they preface this. So either com hungry, have a big appetite, or prepared to share with a friend. I got the Sunny Side Up Burger and it was pretty solid. Egg was runny just how I like it. The sandwiches are pretty big, not huge as some have written, and good. I love a good corned beef sandwich and this little place didn't disappoint. I did expect it to be bigger tho. First time coming here to pick up food that we had mobile ordered. The place was empty except for two couples dining in. Wasn't greeted, by anyone for about 6 minutes. So I started watching the football game. Eventually someone came up and asked if I wanted anything. I told them I was picking up an order so they pointed me to the pick up area. The guy at the pickup didn't say a word and just looked at me. So I said pick up and got my food. Reminder to check your order before you leave. I should have because I was missing half my order. I've been to the restaurant this place is inspired by called Zingermans in Ann Arbor and let me tell you it's an extremely high bar. Had lunch there today and it took me a little while to decide what I wanted to eat. Their menu is big but not as lengthy as Zingermans. Went with a chicken sandwich one with Vermont cheddar but went without the ranch/Russian dressing. The sandwich came on Rye. Ordered the regular sized and it was quite impressive the size/ height. Had lettuce and tomato and they had me put the mustard on myself. For a side I went with potato salad. It was the most unique potato salad I ever had!! Had some spice to it and I've never seen a Red potato salad before!! The spice wasn't overpowering to the potato salad. Comes with a pickle. Truly enjoyed my sandwich. The folks ordering around me some of them had burgers and they all looked big and delicious. For the quality of the ingredients I can completely understand the price premium. read more

Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. They offered us two seat at the bar while we waited for a table. Cool system of calling your phone when your table is ready. We had a very friendly and nice bartender who waited on us, very attentively. Our food came very quickly for the place being so busy. My huge perfectly cooked burger looked like it would be too messy to eat, but the perfect buns held everything together. Fries also very good. Slightly high prices than a typical casual dining restaurant but the menu variety, quality of food and portion size are far superior to most in that category. The corned beef and pastrami were tender and delicious. The option of serving it on pumpernickel bread another big plus. The burger was juicy and flavorful too. Service was good when present but the wait for food was long in our case for the burger due to a mistake in the kitchen. Tip: the price listed for "add-ons" to the burgers and sandwiches (fries, cole slaw, fruit cup, etc.) are limit one per entree at the listed price. Bat 17 seems like a reasonable place to nurse a hangover, or to create one. After a number of people had recommended the Bat to us, we showed up for an early Sunday lunch. I had the regular-sized (RS) Carnegie Reuben: "a scandalously delicious updated version of New York's finest tradition, Kelly Eisenberg premium corned beef, Switzerland Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Russian dressing on grilled, hand-sliced rye bread." I was not especially impressed by the quality of the Reuben and didn't detect a hint of scandal. Our server asked if I wanted to order a side and proposed cole slaw after I said that I wasn't in the mood for French fries. I nodded to the cole slaw suggestion. Unfortunately, I hadn't read the menu carefully enough to learn that Bat 17's cole slaw is **Gorgonzola** Cole Slaw. Why anyone would add gorgonzola to cole slaw is totally beyond me. Yuck!! I tried one of their Very Large Cookies, and thought that it was OK. Service excellent - had a cool dude with redish beard wearing a trucker hat. Literally one of the best sandwiches I have ever had (and I have been eating my whole life - ha) including all over in NYC best delis. Got a pastrami sandwich - I think the Brooklyn. Fresh home made rye, succulent perfect pastrami. Fries were amazing - everybody else's food amazing. They had Two Hearted Ale ice cold on tap ($#!t!!) which the bartender proactively and quickly delivered, as our waiter was a bit busy, with our other drinks (guy with dark beard and trucker hat). I thought there would be more for the price they were. Food is always pretty solid here and the portions are extremely large. Bat 17 is famous for their burgers and brunch, and their menu is fairly extensive. They also have tons of craft beers and different sauces. Another big plus is that they always have free coffee and tea for you to serve yourself any time of the day! The place itself is fairly small and there is often a wait when Northwestern is in session, although it is also possible to go to the "bar" side on the right to also get the food from the menu. Service is all right, but don't expect it to be amazing. My go-to is the veggie burger with a side of sweet potato fries and with the nachos as the appetizer. The nachos are enormous and we could not finish the nachos alone as a group of three, and had to take the veggie burger home with us, uneaten. It's a cool spot to chill/catch up with friends, but I probably wouldn't take a date here because eating the burger is a process, since the whole thing does not fit inside your mouth no matter how much you press it. read more

When you're reading Bat 17's menu, there's a box near the bottom of one of the pages that states to NOT "go to a website" to complain about things, but, rather, talk to the restaurant directly so they can fix it and help YOU out DIRECTLY right there and then. OK! I like that. So, when I order the biscuit, egg, turkey sausage and hashbrown patty "sliders" and they show up with these dismal - I'm talking black, oxidized, what the hell is wrong with these hashbrowns?! - sliders and ask the waiter what is wrong with these hashbrowns and he comes back and says, "That's just how they're fried...." I don't trust what your menu says, Bat 17. Dear dude, That's not how they're fried. That's called a rotten, black potato. That's something that's been exposed to air for wayyyy too long. That was shredded last night and sat in the cooler too long. Cooked in the wrong type of oil or shredded with the wrong type of aluminum (google it if you don't believe me.) Man, you took me for a fool. No hashbrown should be black when fried. YOU KIDDING ME? You kidding me. Gross. And it tasted gross. We spent 80 dollars at this brunch dive that deserves about 20 dollars of our money. 10 fucking dollars for BITE SIZED PRETZELS?! ohhhhhhhhh wait. We're in Evanston! This is priced upon college-aged kids who sit for hours at a table and order one thing - bite-sized pretzels. But for my wife and I, coming from Andersonville, we don't need 87 bite-sized pretzels. We don't need $10 worth of pretzels. I also don't need $15 of "sliders" which are actually 4 REAL-SIZED-BREAKFAST SANDWICHES. LIKE, LEGIT..... FOUR SANDWICHES. Cool if you're a college kid that can afford that and/or has your parent paying for it so you can store it for later.... but, really, it's dry as shit and forgettable. Put a slice of cheese or some sort of spread on it. This sandwich was sadder than a McDonalds brekkie - and at least that's priced right. I really don't know how this place has any sort of 4+ rating. I don't know why I wasted 22 minutes driving from my house to get there, at least 47 minutes eating there, and another 26 minutes getting home.... total waste of time. The food was bland, our "outreach" (like the menu suggested) was fruitless, and the prices were absurd. There are so many other places in Evanston you can enjoy. Avoid this stalwart. The fake nacho cheese should be changed to real grated cheese, if you're trying to "up-sell" with Gunthorp Free-Range Chicken. Got the chicken and was saddened they were cut into cubes, making me think they were pre-packaged? I dunno, I was hoping for shredded pieces of succulent "free to be me" chicken. The nachos came with guacamole and sour cream, and an advertised "five alarm" salsa that failed on the last two alarms... Bat 17 Nachos 2.5 stars. Bat 17, still 4 stars! I'm going to keep them at four stars, because I still generally like this place, despite a few hiccoughs in our meal last night. I was meeting my best girl to watch my beloved Phillies play Game 2 of the NLDS. Sadly, Bat 17 did not have the game sound on, although I was mildly impressed by the array of solid indie rock and 90's nostalgia music flowing (at a very reasonable volume) from the speakers. Service was pleasant, but the execution was spotty on and off all evening. For example, my ladyfriend's empty dinner plate sat in front of her for a long time before being taken away, and I had to ask twice for water. Also, they brought us the bill without asking if we wanted dessert or a second round of drinks (we did x 2). But despite being quite hoppin' for an Evanston Friday night, they didn't seem to mind that we lingered through the last three innings and never cast an ill glance at my random whoops and shrieks corresponding with the game action. I love their sandwiches, but I was in a light-eating mood this time and chose the skirt steak salad. A Tale of Two Salads: on the one hand, the marinated steak was effing delicious, I loved the sesame ginger dressing, and the fried onion strings added some nice texture and flavor; on the other hand, the salad aspect was merely bland greens with a few tomatoes and raw red peppers, and my bowl came with a complimentary pool of water in the bottom. I hate a watery salad. HATE. (I will say that the salad was like the sandwiches in that you can eat your fill and then take the other half home for another full meal.) Finally came here after almost 3 years of being in Evanston! Was super super hyped since I heard a lot from my friends about how wonderful Bat17 food was. I came here with a very empty stomach, so thank god for the huge portions! At first when I looked at the prices I shied away a bit, but after getting my food it was clearly worth the price. Bat17 has a seemingly endless menu as well; have a fun time choosing what you want to eat. I ordered the California Dreamin turkey sandwich (and sweet potato fries for the side, yay), 0 complaints. Our waiter was slightly aggressive...but overall, great experience in a nice sports bar environment where you can be with a big group of friends. I'm surprised I have never been here before. The restaurant is small however they do have another room right next door which both times were reserved for parties. I've had the Sunny Side Up Burger, which you need at least 2 people to eat. This comes with a sunny side up egg, bacon, Vermont cheddar cheese (yummy) on a brioche bun. The fries are in a small basket and taste amazing. They have a huge variety of different beer and drinks. My partner had The Dude Sandwich which has coleslaw, grilled sirloin, pickles, cheese on Sourdough bread. He thought this was amazing and again, the sandwich was huge. We came here on another occasion for Brunch. There was a small crowd and the waitress was friendly and very casual. She informed us that there is free coffee and tea (self serve). Don't mind if i do. I really wanted to try the Fried Chicken and Biscuit Sliders which I know my weight loss pact has now gone to sh... The plate arrived with four sliders that have buttermilk chicken, smoked bacon and white cheddar. This is served with Vermont maple syrup which is super delicious. My partner had the corned beef hash which he really liked. Bat 17 is a great place to go for drinks and food. Head over on a Saturday if you want cheap martinis! They offer 5 or 6 martinis for only $5.95, and they are definitely worth your money. Very strong, but delicious! They also have beer towers which are great to share with friends. The food is also delicious. Some of my favorites are the Pulled Pork Sliders, and the BBQ Chicken salad. Their salads are HUGE! Plus, they are super generous with toppings. They are so flavorful that you don't even need the dressing. The Buffalo Cobb salad is also quite good. We got the sweet potato fries which were burnt and average tasting. And for an extra dollar you ax get an additional side. We tried the bacon potato salad which was terrible. It was drenched in chipotle sauce and you could not even taste the bacon. Overall I would come back and look forward to trying other stuff on the menu and the service was very nice. read more
