Heard about it & passed it many times in the past year & on a Tuesday night it was time to see what the hype was all about. It was packed/fully booked. Our choices for dinner (day before reservation) were seating at 6:15 or earlier or 9:15 or later so reservations well in advance are recommended. We started with cocktails (& they had a few creations) & had a "Buried in Sand" and a "Holy Mule-" Both excellent! Our server was helpful & made some wonderful suggestions once she found out it was our first visit. All the dishes (small & large) are great for sharing. As it seemed a staple of the menu (that changes daily) as well one of their specialties we decided to start with the Bastard Planka. A nice variety of house cured ham, salami, chorizo, pate & pickles-one of the best I've ever had. Also ordered the Klemmings Oysters as our second starter. So fresh, salty & exquisite! For main we ordered the Cod & the Munka Pork (as Pork is their specialty). Cod was cooked to perfection and the Pork had a crust that took it to another level. Both dishes were amazing! We finished with the Pistachio Ice Cream and Paris -Brest. Loved them both but the Paris-Brest is a must try! My only regret is not getting here sooner. Wonderful vibe with great service! They also have a bar area (open kitchen) where you can grab a seat to try some of the entrees or just have a cocktail, beer or glass of wine if they are fully booked. Will definitely be back. After a long day shopping/exploring the city square, this is the perfect way to unwind with a glass of wine or delicious pint of fresh-tapped beer. I am a massive sucker for a good charcuterie and their **meat/cheese** option is a total must. There is definitely enough food to satisfy two grown adults with some refreshingly unusual items not commonly featured on a sampler board-this alone should be celebrated! I'm looking at you, sad salumi...say hello to my little friend, headcheese! Also, their baked fresh bread + butter is a vice I didn't know I had... Everyone was very helpful and eager to share their tips on how to enjoy Malmo! I highly recommend bar seating for a more casual vibe but noted both walk-ins and reservations were all equally and warmly welcomed. read more

I came here with a colleague last night for dinner. The restaurant itself feels very homey and comfortable on the inside, and the dining room is built around a display kitchen, which I always enjoy. We were both quite hungry as it had been a while since lunch, so we ate the bread (with the good butter they have) in short order. Here are highlights of our menu selections: -Baby gem salad: The salad was OK but it was literally covered in cheese, to the point that I didn't finish the salad. It seemed like there was a heavy dressing on it, but I realized partway through that that was mostly just the cheese. -Vegetables and sunflower tahini: This dish was OK for me. I liked the variety of root vegetables, which were plated nicely (they were also raw, so be aware of that if you're not into raw veggies) -Chicken dish: This was the star of the show. The fresh basil and potatoes were a great accompaniment. -Unholy Water cocktail: If they have this tequila-based drink on the menu, you should try it. It has a particularly amusing ingredient (will make sense if you see the menu). LOL -A Su Madre cocktail: This piece-based drink was delicious. It didn't last long in my glass! I think the cocktails were better than the food overall, but in any case, this was an enjoyable meal. They could lighten up on the cheese for the salad, for me, though--it was overpowering. I would say a 3-3.5 on food and 4-4.5 on cocktails, so I'm averaging to a 4. read more

Had a nice final meal in Malmo here. We got lucky coming in on the early side of dinner and got a seat in the bar. Our waitress was just lovely, and helped answer all our questions. We got the olives which were wonderful, then got a couple of the salads (plenty of cheese represented), the mushroom pizza, made in their outdoor woodturning oven, and the most decadent chocolate walnut cake that even though very small was plenty to split. French flair restaurant. Reservations are definitely recommended - it was almost a miracle that we got in on Wednesday, there were lots of people sent away. Good list of beer and wine. I had nice French cider first, then a glass of house Rosé, very tasty. The restaurant offers the tasting menu, which has to be shared by the table, which was what we took. The tasting menu is not predefined, it is basically "whatever chef feels like". We started with charcuterie (excellent selection, very tasty) and steak tartar (outstanding). Then we had two salads which were simply a standout - Panzanella salad with boquerones, and then tomato and feta salad - the tomatoes were so succulent - I don't know when was the last time I tasted tomatoes like that. Next, we shared a squash pizza (tasty) and our last dish was individual servings of ham with mashed potatoes and fresh peas - delicious to the last morsel. Outstanding, super-friendly service. This is not the greatest restaurant but it was certainly very good. Staff are friendly and attentive. Menu was interesting and creative. I am not a big fan of meat so I only tried pizza as most items were with meat. Pizza itself was big enough for dinner!! It had simple ingredients (mushroom, cheese and etc) but the flavor balanced perfectly. It did wow me. Cocktails were really good. Expensive as most Scandinavian have very high tax on alcohol but it's about the same price as US (around $13-15 including tax) and cheaper than Zurich, so I highly recommend that you try one or two. Dessert was interesting as it was like a fluffy fried pancake. Not too sweet. Casual and hip but comfortable ambiance. Worth the visit! read more

Amazing Michelin star restaurant in Malmo! It is so unique and all of their dishes were amazing and perfect. The vibe was great and we were already happy with just their bread and water :). Their cold platter with the different meats was very great and then we had their original pizza which had a very unique smokey taste. Then we had their smoked pork dish that something I have never tasted before. Will highly recommend this place for anyone in town! read more

Bastard, n. - A child who is born out of wedlock or an insult. How do bastards fit in our world? Well there's an American author Jack London who wrote Call of the Wild which is considered an important work of American literature and there's also Confucius who basically became a giant part of the Chinese approach to everything. Bastard the restaurant is a mark to which many Malmö restaurants are measured because they have awesome drinks, dishes that are not typical to any place I've been, and desserts that are on a completely different plane of existence from anywhere else in Sweden. The place is cool and the staff personable and attentive. So, screw morality get me to Bastard and give me a good meal. read more

Read the reviews, went to the place, sat at the bar with my collegue, and was more than impressed by both the baaaaboom of flavor of each of the tapas like dishes, but also by for the first freaking time in a long time, a waiter that knew his wine selection well. What a great idea! I would get tired to explain all the great dishes we had. Buuuuut, the rabbit was exceptional, the 4 beet dish was remarkable, the tomato with (sorry for the spelling but I asked the waiter and he couldn't spell it either) paprikash was something that Ill hack at when I get home to try to duplicate. Wow... this place was hopping and we were lucky to get a seat at the bar. Described as modern european home cooking, phenomenally creative yet homey, delicious and filling, comfort food with class. They have this awesome hand-cranked meat slicer on site and cut their meat platter fresh. I had the roasted chicken for an entree, and it was cooked rather perfectly- *just* completely cooked, meaning tender and juicy and tasty. Wicked desserts, great cocktails, tasty appetizers (goat cheek/head cheese thing was out of this world). The kitchen is cool- in the middle of the restaurant, open concept, run by 5 people who sorta do everything (except the head chef that finishes plating, and the dude that preps all the entrees). Otherwise the 3 others all do appetizers, helping with entrees and prep desserts as needed. They were really in sync, and worked in an unusual 50/50 Swedish/English thing. Without a doubt, our best meal in Sweden (2 weeks). Outstanding service, menu and wine list. Ben the maitre'd, Allen, our server and the entire staff in the open kitchen were fabulous! My wife is a celiac (gluten free), they handled it beautifully. My son and I ordered the Chef's menu--perfect! The wine list is a complex blend of unusual choices--all good. This is a great stop to bring visitors. The butcher style interior is well executed and the food might be nibbly, but of so good. Staff is friendly and helpful and I quite like their leather aprons :) Don't miss the back yard. read more

My husband and I lived in Malmö for 2 years, and we were lucky enough to be there when Bastard first opened. Three years and 4000-something miles later, we still find ourselves making reservations for Bastard *every* time we return. The wine and cocktail menu is perfectly paired, the staff is very kind, and the food is always elegantly presented and thoughtful (serving heart for Valentine's Day was as delicious as it was witty). The menu changes frequently, but you can often find a listing on Facebook. Sitting in the garden area is a absolute must when the weather is cooperating. Bastard is worth every penny -- these are meals that I honestly won't ever forget. read more

Really one of my favorite restaurants in Malmo. They specialize in meat and for me it reminds me of one of my other favorite places, Fergus Henderson's St John's in London. The menu changes often (not sure if it is daily) which means that there is no problem to visit frequently. The focus is as already mentioned on meat, and what they call 'head to tail' eating so there are definitely a few things not served on the average restaurant. I have been here several times and never been disappointed. The price level is good, there are several good options on the wine list and it is clear that the staff are knowledgeable. I do recommend to book since it is also very popular. read more

Three of us had dinner at this restaurant on March 26th. We all ate the same food, but I had the raw oysters as an appetizer. Since I was driving I also had no alcoholic beverages. That night, while driving home, I became increasingly ill and by morning my illness had elevated into full-fledged food poisoning that lasted for three days. The other members of my party were not ill. The restaurant denied serving contaminated oysters, but later, after I had corresponded with the City of Malmo authorities, they admitted to a few instances in recent weeks of illnesses due to oysters. Nevertheless, the management recklessly continued to serve oysters. I can accept that a few contaminated oysters made their way to my plate, but the outright denial of my claim in view of plausible circumstances to the contrary that were furthermore confirmed by the city council is worth notifying prospective customers of this restaurant's attitude towards it's customers. Moreover, their policy to continue selling oysters knowing full-well that there were indeed cited incidents in recent weeks is inexcusable. I urge you to pass up this restaurant. read more

Tried Bastard while I was visiting Malmö and it was a good little spot. The restaurant is cool and so was the decor. The host was helpful in getting us a table to sit at, otherwise we might have left because it was very busy. The food was great and so were the drinks. It's mostly small shareable plates but they do have a few enters to choose from. The service was a bit slow but that is also Swedish culture so I can't fault them too much. But on the other hand the food came out quickly. When I got back to Malmö I'll definitely stop by here again. read more

Alan is THE MAN. Hailing from Honduras this guy is one of the best mixologists we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Everything on the menu is top notch and the ingredients were so fresh. I had a great meal here. Because of the size of our party, we had the set menu, so I am not sure how it compares to the actual menu, but its close enough. The charcuterie is pretty amazing, as is the bread its served with. The beer and drinks were good and plentiful. The lamb was not to miss...a crunchy skin with a tender center. The chef explained to us how he did this...to be honest I can't fully remember but it took lots of time and effort and it showed. Fish was good. One highlight is you can buy their "bastard" napkins: a highlight for that special guest in your own house! read more

Went there for dinner. Crowded garden and bar area mostly locals. Unique and creative menu changes daily. Small plates. Excellent but modest sized wine and beer list. Bread is to die for. Wood fired sour dough, maybe the best I've ever had. We had Hake and mussels, pizza with white sauce, beets and hazelnuts with thin wood fired crust. All dishes amazing. Service flawless. Not for someone who wants familiar dishes. If you're willing to try their offerings, you may have one of the best meals you'll ever have. If I could I'd give it 6 stars. read more

Smelled horrible, rude treatment, arrogant and nasty - We made a reservation over a week in advance (this was "required" since, even though I had a Swedish friend call to make the reservation, they were quite rude about it) - we arrive, dressed to the nines as it was a birthday dinner. The Maitre D was a total asshole to us - asked our young guest 3 times if we had a reservation - I told him 3 times yes, bday, dinner, MY bday (ignored me) - we were 10 minutes early (oh, the Swedes are all about being on time) - he told us finally we would have at least an hour wait and could STAND at the bar ( no seats for us - he let several tables in ahead of us - - by the way, we are blonde and blue eyed, but spoke English) - Wow, just wow. total and complete asshole. My husband finally said no thank you very nicely - we brought a guest and it is my wife's bday - he said just said "Later" in a very ugly way after treating just so mean. WTH?? Will NEVER EVER give them one penny - just wow - I have been all over the world and booked dinners in many 5star rest - this was the worst ever. Manners people. OMG, worst ever. We were only in Malmo for two nights and were very keen to eat at Bastard. At the time every reviewer had given 5 stars ! Trouble is, it was fully booked. Fortunately they have a few none reservable bar tables and we got there when they opened at 5. Really glad we did, the food was excellent, the service was good and all the staff were very attentive. It's a slightly unusual format but we loved it. If you ever find yourself hungry in Malmo. This is definately the place to go. read more

My manager booked this place as he had heard really great reviews of the place. I think the fact it was difficult to get a table for that night and had to wait until 8 is testemony to the popularity of this resteraunt. A great, friendly mix of people who were all visibly enjoying their evening and their meals. The wait staff were on the ball, and handed over information so well that we had two waiters through the evening and both knew exactly who was eating/drinking what. They knew the drinks list and menu well and were very good at giving recommendations. The menu although short, is seasonal and obviously assembled with thought and care. I ordered the soup and the lamb, both which blew my socks off!! It was so good I really didnt want to ruin such a satisfying meal with dessert. If you are ever in Malmö and looking for a lovely place to go for dinner I would whole heartedly recommend you give Bastard a try as I know I will be heading back there next chance I get! read more
