We tried each of the appetizers (the meatballs were our favorite!) and several different pasta options. Maybe we visited Basta on an off day, but we left thinking that we likely would not return. It's kind of a weird set up, you order at the counter but they bring out water for the table as well as your food. The interior is definitely a "fast casual" vibe, but the price point is not. Staff were nice enough, but the whole thing just felt a little awkward. The pasta itself wasn't bad, it was fine, but it wasn't memorable. Hoping for a cozy Italian night out. It wasn't quite that. The ambiance is the biggest issue. The space is painted dark, poorly lit, and honestly feels cold, both in temperature and atmosphere. The wall art is too small for the space, leaving it feeling bare and unfinished. None of it evokes the warmth you'd expect from a pasta-forward Italian concept. For a place marketing itself on authenticity and craft, the setting works against it. The food was decent but didn't justify the price point. The Gnocchi alla Vodka with added burrata was the highlight, tasty, though not remarkable. The Don Basta Focaccia was good, but the balsamic drizzle was almost symbolic, a few drops where a generous pour was called for. Same note on the portion sizes overall: for what you pay, you expect more. I'd like to start my review off by talking about the thing I liked most...that was the service! We were greeted upon entering the restaurant and the staff were very friendly. They were eager to answer our questions and very welcoming. They checked on our table a few times throughout the evening. To clarify, this restaurant is more of a casual setting, but they have great service that checks in often. The ambiance was decent! Modern, but lacking a little in quality. It's hard to want to pay on average $20 for a plate of pasta and then be in that setting. I feel like the seating could be better spaced and better quality. The food was decent! I think it's overpriced, but it was pretty good. I got the gluten free pasta with vodka sauce. The vodka sauce was good but nothing special! My husband got the pesto pappardelle which he really enjoyed. I tasted his sauce and it was delicious. He also added shrimp and they just brought the shrimp on the side. Overall I think the food is decent but way too overpriced especially when it doesn't come with protein. It costs $10 extra to add chicken to your dish...yikes! The portion size is okay but I was surprised to pay what I did and not have leftovers. Maybe my tastebuds are way off, along with my dining partner's, but we both thought our meals were incredibly bland and lacked creativity. I see so many other great reviews that I wonder if we just missed the right menu items. The lady behind the counter was welcoming and friendly, making recommendations to us as first-timers. When our food came out, my date's came in a to-go container with no utensils and mine followed (on a regular plate) an uncomfortable amount of time later. Then someone noticed that we needed forks. That was awkward. The whole experience was kind of lackluster. The environment is very much lacking for the price. Metal chairs on a concrete floor. When we walked in it was very warm, nearly 80°, It felt. We mentioned it and they turned on the AC which was kind. It instantly got to 65° it seemed anyway. Too cold for a warm dinner. (I did ask them to cool it down so that's on me) We ordered two meals, two beers, and one milkshake for our daughter. The cost was nearing $90 for a walk up order plus tip. Feels outrageous to me! The food was very subpar. They bring out a "bread basket" that has exactly 3 to 4 slices of a slim cut baguette. This is our third time there and we will not be back. We had to ask for salt and pepper multiple times before we could get any. The atmosphere is very much like a cafeteria for a finer dining experience price. I am so sad to leave this review because the people here are so nice! the prices are just so absolutely outrageous. My pasta with no protein was $20. If i wanted to add chicken it was an additional $10! And I got the most basic, rigatoni with pesto! The amount of pasta you get is very small for the price too. I was still very hungry after eating it. I am italian! The food tastes great! But it also means I know how cheap it is to make pasta. The prices do not need to be as high as they are. If you're going to price it high, at least give a decent amount! The prices will keep me from returning. This is one of those times when I wish I could give half-stars, as Basta was definitely better than a 3, but not quite a 4, on our visit. With the exception of the pasta itself, the food was tasty. We ordered a caprese salad and rigatoni bolognese to share. The salad was good, as was the bolognese sauce. They also had the bottled Italian iced tea brand that we saw everywhere in Italy, which was a nice --and authentic -- touch. However, as others mentioned, the pasta itself was tough, which detracted from the yummy sauce. I know Italians like their pasta al dente, but this was just plain chewy. When we ordered our food, the person at the counter was helpful in explaining Basta's model and making suggestions for our order. We also had very attentive servers the entire meal. However, the atmosphere -- ugh. I'm not saying you have to go full-on cliched Italian restaurant, with checkered tablecloths and Dean Martin playing, but the loud, open space with metal chairs clanging around doesn't make you want to sit and savor your meal. Ordering at a counter for food at this price point is also a little off-putting. We will definitely give Basta another try, as there aren't many places like it close to Draper, and the food was generally good. However, we may wait until the weather is warmer so we can try to sit outside and avoid the interior. read more

Basta has stolen my heart. While I enjoy pizza I don't get it often...that is until I found Basta. Their pizza is so tasty and also well priced, it's an easy choice to get a full pizza for myself without breaking the bank. I've gotten their Margarita pizza more times than I can count, and their olive oil cake is glorious. If you have leftovers, I recommend reheating in the oven for best next day pizza enjoyment. This is a neighborhood spot for us, we desperately want it to be good. We love an Italian place in the hood. However, it was very bad. The place only does pasta and pizza. For almost $20 it was a real disaster. Across the street at the generic Noodles & Co, I would have been served a far better meal. My husband (whose favorite food is pizza) chose a pizza. Went with the family this last weekend, and it was easily the best Italian I've had in Utah. Ordered the genovese, bolognese, meatballs & reggiina pizza; everything was top tier. Wine was great too. Think we had waited around 30min for the main course (which was the failing of the previous owner at this building) and the staff came over and comped us desert: cannolo & tiramisu, also great. Portions were huge & the price was a relief from local restaurants, as you got what you paid for. Almost forgot, bought our kid their Italian cream soda... so good. Overall, I'd give the restaurant a 9.5/10. Actually, was talking about the restaurant again last night & was thinking back over the decades of all the Italian places we've eaten at and this was top 2. The pasta was fresh and tasted good, but for the price I don't think I'll be back. For 2 of us we got 3 tiny pieces of bread and a speck of olive oil/vinegar for dipping and then the server never brought us our water. Looking at others food I might go back and try the pizza. It looked good and is much less expensive. But for $25+ per person I'll go to a regular sit down with bigger portions and more bread read more

I've been to the fashion place location multiple times, and wanted to try this location. I ordered sorentina with rigatoni instead of gnocchi. The poor cashier was confused and kept apologizing because he is new. After my help and a few of his coworkers, he got it. I've worked in the food industry, and I know they are still trying to work out the kinks. The complaints saying the olive garden is better are crazy. Local and fresh overrides a subpar chain. The manager and chef checked in with us and most other tables it looked like. Staff is attentive and friendly. I hope they are successful!
