The Basement is located smack bang in the centre of Belfast and although it's a basement bar (literally), it is by no means dark and dingy and is infact bright, fresh and funky! The food is big and consists of all the burgers and steaks you vcan think of-a real bloke's menu. And the portions are huge too! The pepper sauce is a must have-yum! Its the favourite lunchtime haunt of the suits that spill out from the nearby offices and hard to get a seat during the week at this time and does be pretty packed out in the eveings too especially at the weekend- most definately a popular place to be. It also hosts itself as a bit of a sports bar donning big screens equipped with Sky Sports for fan's of every event be it football, rugby or cricket. I've been to the basement a few times now. The main reason I've been there is that my housemate, has played under her electronica guise, Kiani as part of the U at the Basement nights organized by Belfast DJ Stefan Greco. The music on offer here is usually hard house or techno, admittedly not my thing but anytime Katriona's playing I know I'll be in for a good night. The venue itself is a basement. I'm not a massive fan of the venue. I liked to get dressed up on a Saturday night and the Basement doesn't really suit that. The dance floor is too small and located in between the bar and the door, so I don't think any real atmosphere gets going in this place. The bar is fine and well equipped and the last time I was there Smirnoff were giving out free flavoured vodkas. I think if the Basement glammed up its act a bit and got a bit of a refurbishment it might scrub up well. read more

The chickpea & squash stew I had here for lunch the other weekend is ideal for this time of year, whether you've got a cold yourself or not. First thing for ages with chillis in that has actually had me question whether I'd manage to finish it. Great stuff. Very prompt service (until waiting to pay, but that's a common problem), nice big screen at the front part of the bar for the football, decent decor although not personally sure of some of the paintings and the background music was unintrusive and well chosen (older pop/rock). Nonetheless, on my last couple of visits I found the food bland, vegetarian options seriously limited and service too slow. The basement is a useful little bar located in the centre of the city. As it is stumbling distance from most of the large office blocks in the city, it can tend to get a bit busy come the end of the long working day. It is split in two, with the front dedicated to the fully stocked bar, and with the back being a restaurant area. Both are very good, if a tad cramped sometimes. The menu in the Grill at the back is what you would expect, with burgers and steaks galore and it is all cooked to a decent standard. The bar at the front is good too, relaxed and enjoyable. Upon occasion I have found myself in here looking for a break from the long working week or a particularly long day Christmas shopping. This was my "waiting for the bus pub". Now that I'm on a different bus, I'm not around as much anymore, but I still try to pop in every now and again. Something about drinking below street level is very appealing to me. The bar is always crowded on football match days, and they usually have some kind of drink special to promote during the event. They have a number of tables and chairs in the back of the room and serve a wide range of foods on their menu. The biggest wide screen TVs there are all mounted directly by the front door. As soon as you walk in, you'll feel everyone's eyes on you. So try not to get too freaked out. Beers are standard prices and they have a few of the standards on tap. read more

The Basement is a fantastic place for grab food whilst wondering around town. At lunch time, its almost impossible to get into due to the sheer number of business people, having a quick bite whilst discussing business topics often involving a word like synergy. Being situated down some stairs in the lower part of an old town house makes its location almost part of its appeal. The place, obviously without windows, it still lit perfectly and you don't notice the complete lack of natural light. The Basement likes to make its meals huge. The food is fantastic, so I'm never disappointed about my portion size, only that I can never ever manage to finish it. Their homemade burgers in particular are fantastic, especially with their home made pepper sauce. Right, so I know I've spent at least one drunken night in this place and had at least one meal, but the thing is, I can't really seem to remember them. Not because of the drunkenness, just because the Basement is a bit...meh. The food was grand (I think). Pretty standard pub grub, but there was very little to complain about. It was reasonably priced and the service was good. In my other visit, I remember it being ok for a bar, but there wasn't any particular buzz about the place to be honest. Maybe I'm asking too much though. The Basement has been there for years and still seems to pull the crowds in at all times of the day, so it must do something right. Another of those city centre bars that seem to have been around forever and thus I've lost count of how many times I've been in here. By nature of its location the crowd is usually pretty mixed...office workers, rained out shoppers, shirking students, Japanese tourists all seem to congregate here and I must admit I've always had a good time here. It's in a basement so perhaps not the most enticing prospect but it is actually nicely kitted out and there's a relaxed atmosphere to the place. Food-wise it's standard pub grub but the burgers are delicious and you can't go wrong with one of those if you're feeling particularly peckish. The Basement's a fantastic little bar and restaurant in what (with a bit of neglect) could easily be left to degenerate into a damp little hole in the ground. The entrance isn't especially welcoming - a flight on concrete steps, heading down... But hopefully that's why we never seem to be annoyed by besuited city types comparing apps on their annoying city phones. The bar is brightly lit, the service is very slick and they stock five different types of gin - always a plus for me when a pub stocks Hendrick's, and serves it properly. There's a separate eating area towards the back, and the above-average-standard pub grub is really quite good, but you'll find me at the lovely bar throwing a G&T into my face. read more

Plunged into the Basement the other day and fought my way through the crowds of Friday after work drinkers. Usually I'm desperate to get straight home at that stage but one of my colleagues was leaving for much greener departures so this was a celebration. It was happy hour and we ordered strawberry cocktails (sorry couldn't remember the name). The bar tender wasn't especially thrilled about having to produce seven of these things which involves a labour intensive process of juicing the strawberries. They took a while to arrive but the end result was a bigger kick than the one I received from a horse not long ago. Fantastic pick me up that would be a great start to a ruinous weekend. The Basement itself isn't a place I'd choose to spend much time in - too near work thanks to its office land location and office worker clientele. This is a nice enough place to have a drink and catch up with friends, although it can get quite busy and be difficult to get a seat. I've had lunch here a few times and while the staff were lovely and friendly the food wasn't that great. I'll probably end up going there again as the location is quite handy, but i wouldn't go out of my way to go. read more

Basement is located in the city centre beside City Hall, though as the name suggests, its not an obvious place to find. However, there is big signs outside the steps so it is not too difficult locate. Once you get it there, it is a fine place, reasonable priced food and drink. The food is fine also, but nothing you wouldn't miss if you didn't try it. Good bar for a couple of drinks, with it showing sport and having nice background music on, if your around the city centre or wanting to go for a couple of drinks after work, its a good place to go to. We met here a while ago for a good friends' birthday celebrations, and I had actually never heard of the place before, which is strange considering it's in such a central location. I had thought it was a brand new place, but it's been there for some time. It's literally in the basement of one of the large original buildings in Donegal Square, and due to this, it's not the lightest or airiest of placed. I've never really felt the need to review this restaurant before even though it is well known around Belfast for providing quality, value food, in a lovely surrounding with good craic staff in an artistic, cool vibe surrounding. But today I was provided with such good quality service that I couldn't resist the urge to Yelp about it. Well, I called in here for a bite of lunch with a girl friend of mine and although we were stuck between a few options we decided Basement was the handiest, most convenient place to go. After having a look at the menu outside, we thought, well, sure, why not! And I was not disappointed, out meal was delicious we had two of the specials; one salmon & king prawn salad and one vegetable lasagne with a side of chips. I got a drink or two and friend ordered a coke, the whole meal cost abound £22 so I was pleased with the end price.
