A job well done! We had a large Elm tree near the house which was showing signs of distress. I reached out to three tree care companies including Bartlett Tree Experts. The representative from Bartlett (Bryan Peach) responded promptly and scheduled a visit within days. Unfortunately, the Elm had Dutch Elm Disease and thus required removal. The tree was between my house and neighbors house with the canopy stretching over both as well as a variety of other plantings. The price from Bartlett was competitive and we scheduled removal. The crew from Bartlett was extremely professional, skilled and took great care to make sure that everything was safe and that all of my other plantings were protected as much as possible. The tree removal went without incident and my yard, drive and the rest of my property were cleaned up better than when they arrived. Our Pine and Blue spruce trees looked a little sad and droopy last fall. No growth on top, losing pinecones and just brown looking. Upon several recommendations, I phoned Bartlett Tree to come out and take a look. Max one of their licensed arborists asked me to send a few photos first and then an on site visit was booked. We had Evan come out to evaluate property for two jobs we wanted done: cleaning up a pond/creek and remove dead trees. Evan responded almost instantaneously to our inquiry, came to take a look within a few days and produced a very competitive proposal given the scope of the work. The clean up of the pond/creek was time sensitive because the water level was really low = easy to get the job done. While it took a while until the job was done, Evan did keep an eye on the weather and sent in a crew just a day before heavy rain moved through the area. Had he not done that, this job would not have happened this year because now the water level is back up to almost normal (which would have submerged most of the debris). Thank you Evan. The crew that did the job was also great. They arrived on time, worked very efficiently and go it all done. Very happy with the outcome. The arborist seemed competent and knew about the trees: what they were, what was going on with them. Unfortunately, the price for removal was outrageous! They were going to charge $4K for one tree. I had the work done and was charged less than half of that for 8 trees. read more

I had a huge, beautiful, healthy, close to 100 year old Elm tree in my backyard. I hired Bartlett to come out and trim it in February of 2021 for close to $1000. 18 months later it was dead. As I tell below, I contacted them multiple times concerning the dying tree. Lastly, to tell them that the tree was 100% dead. I asked about the cost of removing it, keeping in mind I had just recently paid them a lot to trim it. They said they'd take that into consideration when providing the quote. Well, when I got the quote with the "consideration", it was $8000! I almost hit the floor. Of course I got other quotes. 3 of them. They ranged from $3500-$5500. That is reason enough why I'd never use them again. The firm I did use did a great job of removing it. I first contacted them in the spring of 2022 because it was slow to bloom and only bloomed partially. They said the previous drought must have caused it. Researching, (https://stateclimatologist.web.illinois.edu ) I found out the Spring of 2021 was very dry, but it closely followed the wettest 18 months in northern Illinois history. That summer northeastern Illinois had average to above average rainfall. So the Spring drought didn't help but the tree had been through a lot worse in its lifetime. So I wrapped a soaker hose around it and asked them for help with what to do. They said "There are not many diseases that affect these trees. Fertilizing the tree, and possibly treating for root rot, may help." So I pressed further and asked how I should fertilize it and how much I should be watering it. The response was "The fertilizer we use is a 30-7-9 slow release fertilizer. You could use a different formulation , just to try to make sure the tree has enough nutrients to try to push out what growth it can." The fertilizer they use? On what? Sick trees? Isn't that what I had? And the amount to use couldn't have been more vague. With the watering they said "we recommend 1-2 inches of water every 7-10 days for a mature tree." Again, how would I judge that? Unfortunately, the combination of fertilizing (gallons upon gallons) and watering didn't help save the tree but it sure gave me a bumper crop of mushrooms and the Creeping Charlie I thought I had eradicated sure came back with a vengeance. Next, they said it may have caught a disease called verticillium wilt and inferred I could pay to have a test done. They said "This is a disease that is present in the soil, and can get into the root system when the roots are stressed from drought, or sometimes from planting or construction stress. I have never seen it on a mature Siberian elm before. Unfortunately, if that is what is going on with the tree, there is not treatments for verticillium wilt." Well, since they had said previously that "there are few diseases that affect these trees" and they'd never seen this disease on an Elm like mine, and it couldn't be cured, and no other tree in my or my neighbors' yards had "caught" it from the soil, I decided not to pay to have the test done. It seemed a slim to none chance that it caught it and I didn't want to keep throwing good money after bad. I said that they could do the test to satisfy their professional curiosity. They never did it. I assumed they thought the same. All in all, a very depressing experience. read more

Bartlett Tree Experts, Northbrook .... find someone else. Wow, what not to do as a tree service firm. First...BEWARE THE AGREEMENT FORM!!! (just my opinions based on their actions) We take our trees seriously. As I'm sure most do if they have had the experience of living under 80 year olds (oaks in this case). They originally did some work on one of our two oaks, just general cleaning. On our second oak, I asked them to provide a assessment due to old storm damage. On signing the proposal, beware; once you sign you are on the hook for payment no matter their actions (in this case incompetence). Resistive testing was done. The report (really not, they just call it that). came back as having High Risk, but with remediation would be low risk. OK, but for what? I asked for an assessment, but received a poorly copied (literally crooked) report with NO data, just a copied table. So with my 300$ charge, I get what is clearly a massively copied and pasted report with no data or information. Several weeks (6 in total) pass without a response to my requests for more information; you would think with a "HIGH RISK" assessment, they might be more helpful...but nope. Finally get to speak with the Manager, and get a meeting setup to get the full assessment. After making and confirming the appointment, I receive an proposal by email for REMOVAL of the tree, nicely attached to their neat little AGREEMENT FORM...BEWARE! STILL NO ASSESSMENT. But their more than willing to cut down our 80 yr old oak for a 3K bill. Then call back to confirm the appointment....magic ....no appointment is on their books. Exhausting, what a waste of time, and money. They're not touching my trees again. like i said, WOW ....really, what not to do. read more

I made an appointment and it took over 3 weeks for them to come out. I didn't know I was supposed to be here, I thought they were only coming to look at the tree and would call me. They came early, and I wasn't here so they left. I rushed home and arrived 10 minutes late, they wouldn't come back and they said they could give me another appointment in 2 weeks. They said they sent me an email with instructions, but they sent it to the wrong email address and I never received it. They left off half of my email address. I can do better than this service. After a late spring, wet snowfall in 2019, I experienced significant damage to a couple of mature, large Junipers I got several quotes and spoke to the Arborists of each company.
