I used Bartlett for almost two decades, spending about $2k a year with them to provide plant health care for my intensively planted property. I dropped them this year after losing several trees and shrubs to disease over the past few years. They always "sent samples" of the stressed plants for "testing" but never came back with a reason or were able to nurse the plants back to health. I gave them the ax this year when they were unable to bring a mature, stressed Japanese Cherry back to health and recommended I pull the tree and replace it. Instead, I aggressive pruned the sick and deal limbs and branches and fed it. Today the tree is thriving again. See photo. I've used this company to remove trees a few time and they have never let me down. Even after a huge storm that brought down tow of my neighbors HUGE trees on my roof, deck and backyard, they were the quickest to respond, were able to come back and do the job in a reasonable amount of time and their estimates we're at or below the other estimates. Javier is responsive. I call or email and he comes same or next day to check out the job and give a proposal. Their guys are nice, polite, no curing or swearing, they don't leave garbage or anything behind, and they checked and double checked to make sure they were removing exactly what I wanted removed. Pros: There is only one pro, Javier Ocampos. He is the most knowledgeable arborist this side of the Garden of Eden. His concern for the health of trees is parammount and guides all his recommendations. He is professional and patient and explains exactly how each species of tree should be pruned and cared for. Cons: Unfortunately, the recommended work all depends on the crew that is sent out. In our case, the pruner had little commitment to the job and was not only careless, but wreckless. Massive branches of trees were haphazardly allowed to fall onto and crush a hedge of boxwood that had been meticulously cared for over thirty years. A large pine barely seemed to have been pruned at all except that one side had fewer branches than the other, like a bad hair-cut. Clean-up was sloppy, so it was up to the homeowner to clean up the leftover branches and leaves and detritus (including the pruner's water-bottle). Javier was apologetic and explained that his top crews were absent that day. He sent back the following day a far more professional group, and the job was completed to satisfaction. Javier planted several small shrubs to fill in the gaping boxwood holes. In 3-5 years they should hopefully fill in the gaps. However, it would have been preferable for this not to have happened at all or, at the very least, the homeowner should have had the option to reschedule. And if you think the business might offer a discount on the price or extend themselves in any way to ameliorate your aggravation, well, forgeddaboutit. read more

We had two big trees in the backyard of our new event space. The landlord agreed to have them removed due to fact that the branches were overgrown. Not only were the men Knowledgeable but they worked fast while leaving not even a twig for me to clean up after them. As a matter of fact they actually cut small branches, then place them in our outdoor fire place in such an ornamental way it actually heled improve the overall abidance of our event space. This is my second time posting my review and I will post it a third time if I have to! This company at this location and in particular Mike are irresponsible. They do not follow through. They are unreliable and they will waste your time, as I quickly found out. The sad part is this company came highly recommended by someone who had used Bartlett in Rhode Island. These people are not only NOT up to the RI location standards, they are way below what is the very minimum. Take a look at the other reviews and you see a pattern. Was told that someone would come out for an estimate. Never heard back from anyone on this. Two weeks past and still nothing. Customer service is a part of your business and since yours was so poor, I am leacign a two star rating on your business. You're not just tree experts, you're a customer based business. Complete dissatisfaction with Bartlett Tree Experts. The "Experts" should be in quotes. We had an arborist come to the house and give us a quote and a detailed breakdown of what they would do to the trees behind our house... they barely did anything. My wife came home and thought they hadn't come yet because the trees looked exactly the same! She had to call the office and make the workers come back and finish the job! They barely trimmed the tree saying if they cut any more it would damage them. Even though the "expert" arborist said they would take off 4 to 6 feet. They cut about 2 feet off. Barely any difference. They would also shape up the trees and "make them look nice". Nothing. They cut 2 feet off of three out of the four trees and left. Terrible communication and a terrible job for $400. Stay away from.this company. I have to give at least one star but they deserve zero. read more

As chair of our 200 Block E.78th St. Assn. in New York City, I called Kevin summer of 2015 to assess the damage that several severe winters had done to our street trees. He walked the block pointing out what needed to be done - no charge. Early 2016, he sent a very reasonable proposal for an early summer pruning and fertilization.The crew arrived as scheduled - even early, a rarity in the City - closed off the street and not only did a thorough and highly professional job of pruning the trees but were extraordinarily considerate of the residents and pedestrians. Mike came after I responded to a card sent to my address. Since was several years I have not done pruning I requested an estimate for what Mike was to decide was needed. I accepted the estimate and the crew came around 9.30 AM with the truck full of debris. The foreman told me will later dispose of them. Later came Mike and told me the foreman found one branch to be damage and needed to be cut. Since the estimate was done for all and any job needed. I told him I was not going to pay extra. Around 3PM the crew left. I was not able to check during the work because of sickness and I was in any case expecting as in previous jobs with other companies for the agent to check with me before the crew was to leave. I call Mike the next day and told me was going to come and check. I never saw him. I paid in full as soon as the bill was received I did sent him by e-mail my complains. (no answer) Only a few days after we had a wind and many dead branches came down. Mike came over during the initial appt. to look at the job. His advise was quite useful, as others were happy to cut down what ever branches of the tree I asked for. He pointed out to what should not be cut to prevent the tree from dying. His men did a great job, cleaned up all the debris. Backyard started to look clean and bright. After begging the City of New York for a tree, I finally got one. My elderly father was devastated after the loss of a beautiful maple tree, and he hoped for a tree that would grow and replace it. We watered it, kept dogs from it, bought expensive ice melt that wouldn't harm it when it ran off. Then these alleged "experts" came by, with a bunch of day laborers with no business with a chainsaw and cut off EVERY SINGLE LEAF BEARING BRANCH under the guise of working for the City of New York's Tree Trimming Program. A tree that had no need of pruning now looks looks like the end of the Shel Silverstein story. A tree cannot be fixed. Once you've destroyed it, it is gone forever. The horrible, incompetent people at Bartlett Tree Experts don't care that my tree is gone, and didn't care enough to hire people who knew what they were doing. And they have destroyed my father's favorite thing about this neighborhood. Unless your goal is a concrete jungle, stay far away from these tree murdering people. read more

Having Bartlett Tree Experts come to your urban garden is almost as cool as having Spidar Man visit your back yard! On January 31st I moved into a new co-op and have had a constant flow of workmen, "handymen", and other so-called "professionals" in and out of my apartment. By far, the most (only?) responsible, prompt, REALLY-KNOW-WHAT-THEY-ARE-DOING professionals has been Bartlett Tree Experts. A friend who works at the Bronx Botanical Gardens referred me to Bartlett last summer when I was first looking at this apartment. She said they were THE "go-to" tree experts used by the Botanical Gardens as well as most other major NYC parks, university grounds, etc. I called and was contacted promptly by Mr. Charles King. I explained my concerns about the apartment I was considering (aging trees in the back yard, dead limbs, light concerns, maintenance issues). He offered to come to the apartment and look at the trees. No charge. Just to give me an opinion. He gave me and the seller's' real estate broker an eye-opening and jaw-dropping explanation of what the issues were andwhat could be done. He was amazingly informative. I am sure this realtor will never ever ever sell an apartment in NYC that has trees without remembering Mr. King and the education he gave her. In any event, I bought the apartment in January and needed the tree work done ASAP in the dead of winter because there were imminent liability issues (when I moved in I saw a big branch detatched from a tree and about to fall on a neighbor's property). I called Mr. King, he remembered me/my apartment and said he could get it taken care of 2 days later. AND NOW STARTS SPIDAR MAN... Bartlett Tree Experts show up and completely cover my (newly refinished) floors. Three guys. They start tossing long ropes up into the trees (there own web, of sorts). Pulling themselves up on pulleys or otherwise. They are 5 stories off the ground, throwing ropes around branches, cutting the branches, catching them just as they fall to the ground. They were obviously having a goodtime because all my neighbors were hanging out of their windows watching them and cheering them on. Nicest guys. They obviously love their work. They said they even go to tree trimming competitions around the country. Who knew there was such a thing. Absolutely talented guys. THEY REMOVED APPROX EIGHT HUGE PLASTIC CONTAINERS (EACH ABOUT FOUR FEET HIGH) of cut up tree branches and dirt and snow and ice from my garden (which had a foot of snow and ice). I DID NOT EVEN HAVE TO SWEEP MY FLOOR! They were so perfect in removing everything without any dirt, water, etc. Because it was winter and snow, Mr. King had the workers come back today and remove the twigs that they could not remove until now due to the spring rain.
