Last night was our fifth or sixth visit to Bartleby. Our first visit was the soft opening and we've gone back since that time and enjoyed our meals. We've taken 15-20 others to dinner there. Last night, however, bringing a new couple in who had never eaten at Barnaby, we were very disappointed in the food. Our server was excellent. The appetizers were good, but the new menu with items as Japanese Fried Chicken and short ribs was disappointing. The JFC could hardly be called a meal. Having had Arancini and mussels as appetizers, my wife and I chose to share the short ribs. We have had short ribs many times in the past at other restaurants and found that they were easily shareable. Last night, the short rib we received was a pitiful representation of that dish. A long single rib, with a slim piece of fatty beef; 2-3 oz at best. The "shmear" of sweet potato was a joke. It could not have been called a meal. Laughable to say anyone could share that dish. The appetizers were good. Our drinks were good. The JFC should be an appetizer. We won't return. Many other choices in the CLE. read more

The restaurant is beautifully designed and is a true dining experience. I just wish the food was as good as the design. The pesto arancini was tasty but the dinners were nothing to write home about. The bathroom wall paper impressed me more than the food. I had the grouper, and they left the fish skin on. Instead of it being crispy, it was slimy an blubbery in texture, just plain unappetizing. The apple fritters are not good. The apples were raw inside and tasted like month old apples you would pull out of the back of the fridge to use up. I would not recommend these at all. Maybe if you came here for appetizers, not dinner, it would be better. I wonder if the pizzas are the key. It seemed everybody was ordering the pizzas. The other challenge is the check. If you have multiple people in the group that need to pay separately, you have to request an itemized bill so you can calculate who had what. They don't bring it to you. They just come and ask for a credit card to pay the entire bill. If you go here, hopefully you have cash because they only take two credit cards per table. This place is more about the Ambiance than the food. I left a bit disappointed especially since it was a special occasion dinner. I am not sure I will return for dinner. read more

Giving 3 stars to not completely tank their reviews but really hoping they can get their act together. I was very excited to see another business take over this beautiful building. We went Saturday night at 8:30 to get drinks at the bar. The place was about 2/3's full and it was easy to get bar seats. When we first got greeted by a bartender we had high hopes, but after the initial greeting and hand off of menus no one once talked to us or looked at us. There were 5 bartenders who all seemed incredibly unfamiliar with the bar. They were barely keeping up with the drinks needed at the tables to serve anyone at the bar intently. I had to flag someone down to order our drinks, and then when they came she threw the cocktail over as if it was a bud light in a crowded nightclub. I didn't even know if she was done making it. Additionally all of their $15 cocktails on the menu are batched, I think it's pretty lame to charge $15 for a cocktail and have it be batched. My glass was also so low, I'm pretty sure she didn't fill it enough. Attached photo I had not even taken one sip yet. So after our drinks we just observed the madness that was happening behind the bar. No one knew what they were doing. Eventually our drinks were empty and no one looked up at us once, we would have gotten another round but no one approached. I had to flag a bartender down to close out and there was no formal exchange no "can i get you anything else? "How was everything?" "Thanks for coming have a good night." The exchange was slamming the black book down and moving on. It was not that busy at all, the bar has plenty of open seats. Once again these bartenders feel like they came from working at night clubs not fine dining. The vibes were also off the music was too low, I could see straight into their bright office with the curtain open, and in the corner was a mop bucket and a caution wet floor sign, this is supposed to be a nice place? Great ambiance and location. Parking isn't the best in the area but I was able to valet which worked out perfectly! Our waiter was very attentive and made great recommendation. I tried the mushroom pasta but it didn't turn out right the first time around. After talking with our waiter we were able to get the taste to my liking. What a disappointment. With a reservation at 6:45, there was hardly anyone in the restaurant and we were literally sat on top of the table next to us. We asked our server if we could move to have a little space and she said by 7:30 all the tables would be filled up just like we were now so we let it go. There were so many empty tables throughout the entire course of our dinner by 9pm. The food was subpar. We ordered the grain salad, ricotta bread, salmon and chicken. The grain salad had cutup apple pieces on it and the sticker was still ok several pieces. We sent it back and they brought us a new one long after our meals were served - they said it took so long because the chef had to cut more apples. My husband enjoyed the chicken but the salmon was still raw in the middle. We were still charged with the salad anyways. It was dirty. The bathroom was filthy. The entrees priced well until they upcharge to season fries on the steak dinner to the tune of 6.00 per entree, I got brocoli instead of fries, upcharged. We had great service on a Friday night! 6pm reservation and we seated right away. our server was great. attentive, but not annoyingly so. We had drinks, salad, pasta dish, and dessert - all wonderful. The atmosphere is really neat. dark and moody in this big building. It was not cold or intimidating because they have sectioned off spaces to make it intimate and cozy. The decor is fun: velvet swivel chairs for small tables, velvet sofas for the longe seating, velvet booths - all with marble or stone tables. low lighting and candles. Bathrooms have interesting, textured wallpaper that makes it unique. Highly recommend a visit! read more

The only reason why I'm giving this three stars is because the atmosphere is very nice. The decor is beautiful and I've always loved that building. The staff was friendly, but that's where everything ends. We stopped in for just drinks and an appetizer. We got the crab pizza. I've had better pizza served to me at poolside grills and fairs. It was essentially a piece of pita bread with a little bit of crab thrown on top and some corn. For $24 I expected more. In all fairness, we did not try any other options because we chose not to eat there because of how disappointing the pizza was. The drinks were OK but it's kind of hard to mess those up. They have a great atmosphere, but if they're going to keep people coming back, they really need to step up. read more

Was a little skeptical because I remember this space as Crop and it was so hard to have a conversation because there was nothing to absorb the sound. Bartleby seems to have addressed this issue and I was able to hear everyone in our party. The food was good. I would go back to try another menu item or two and I think that's saying something because these days I feel like I'm always overpaying for meh food that I can make better at home. The salmon risotto was delish and the mushroom pizza with boursin and truffle oil smelled amazing. And our table enjoyed the crab fritters too. I would pass on the ricotta bread app. read more
