Bartleby occupies the historic United Bank Building (former home of the Crop Bistro). I have been frequenting Bartleby for the last year for book club meetings, silent readings, and DJ sets. I really look forward to every single visit. AMBIANCE: At book club we call the ambiance dark academia. The space is grandeur, dim and illuminated by candlelight. There are dramatic mirrors, a tree, and fascinating book decor. It's an unmatched experience and you feel transported to the place of absolute peace. It feels like dining at some grand mansion. Inside you'll find tasteful and too comfortable velvet furniture, upscale booths and tables. TYPICAL GUESTS: Most guests are couples dining in the incredibly intimate and romantic atmosphere. It's a wonderful date spot because due to the lack of windows and dim atmosphere you really feel immersed into your dining partner and conversation. I personally love coming here solo, ordering a fancy dinner, and having a ball during candlelit dinner. When I arrive with the book club, I am always amazed by how seamlessly we are accommodated and meticulously catered to. FOOD/DRINKS: I really enjoy exploring Bartleby menu and never get bored. I get bored very easily so it's shocking this restaurant is still getting me so excited. My favorite dish is Roasted Chicken with corn puree, asparagus, and rosemary jus ($29). The chicken serving is very generous. It's so delicious and hearty. Bartleby Burger with angus beef is my second favorite. It's one of the best burgers in the city. By now I tried most food on the menu. During book club most gals love to order pizza. Financiers were my loves on the menu. They seem to be discontinued now, so next I'll try Pavlova. Drinks here are truly refined. Every cocktail is prepared with so much skill and out of really high end liquor. I usually order specials provided to the book club, seldom explore the drink menu. Cocktails are priced at $16 and are well worth it. I also sometimes order hot tea, arrive with the book, and get lost in the ambiance. SERVICE: The service is top notch. I'm always amazed at how the restaurant can quickly serve such a huge group when we arrive with the book club. When I dine here solo, I also get shocked at how attentive the experience is. Service staff is very polite and attentive. Host staff always so friendly and welcome. I can't think of a better service experience in Cleveland to be honest. LOCATION: The restaurant is located in Ohio City. There is plenty of street parking in the area. The most convenient parking is at the West Side Market (paid basis). I am very impressed with everything about Bartleby. It's a shining star in the world of hospitality. I was just there last night and already really look forward to my next visit. read more

I recently stopped in your restaurant with my husband. A guy who was our waiter JASON P took our orders and drinks. He was very rude and he had a friend sitting next to me and they laughed as we took a bit of our food as if he did something to it in the back. One thing Jason P didn't know is I content create for different organizations and have over 400K followers on TikTok I'm going to post the videos and let the people get him fired from there. It was unprofessional and if he doesn't like African Americans he needs to work from home. I did NOT react or even mention anything. My husband spoke on the food quality and all Jason P said is he will let his cook know because he is new. But Jason P didn't care and just know we still left a tip even though I was DISGUSTED. I'll also display the friend that sat next to me a seat down and laughed kept looking at his phone and made eye contact as if JASON P texted him as we ate the food. So if you have cameras you'll see all of this and you'll see I DID NOT EAT ANY OF IT! I hope not only hire better employees but hire employees that's accepting to all races. It was an unfortunate experience! read more

I have gone here for dinner with friends. The ambiance is unmatched. So moody and dark. Obsessed with the couches and the tree in the middle. The server we have had was slower so I wouldn't come if you are in a rush. The mushroom ravioli was delicious, we loved the sauce. Drinks were delicious. The only disappointment was that salmon with cous cous did not have a great harmony of flavor and the salmon was a bit dry. read more

We've been meaning to go here for a couple years. We went yesterday Saturday evening and the place was busy and we didn't have a reservation but they had room at the bar. I had a whiskey sour and I can't remember what my wife had. We both had salads the Caesar was better than the beat salad. I had the cod and it was amazing, she had the bolognese which also was great but the cod stole the show. Excellent food, service and the place is beautiful. An old bank. read more

Great vibes and although I didn't try it, late night happy hour menu looked great. Sexy date spot option at the bar area.

Bartleby's total package is amazing-! The bar radiates an "uber hip" vibe; notwithstanding their edgy cultural milieu, the adult beverage curators have an old-school devotion to the art and science of creating totally legit libations No hype needed "for sure." This reviewer is guilty of only sampling cocktails and desserts to go... But if these exquisite flavor experiences are any indication of the total picture, my recommendation would be to book a table in the main dining room, which is too cool for me-- exuding both goth / steampunk sensibilities Whatever you decide, a destination trip to Bartleby's is worth the Journey read more

SYNOPSIS -- I visited on Saturday, 3 Feb. 2024. The Cod is a great dinner choice if you want something light. The cocktail names alone will leave you wanting more (I don't drink alcohol and I did not try a cocktail but 3 of my friends did). Go to Bartleby for the ambience because the character and atmosphere is truly astonishing (red chairs, high ceilings, big tree in the center, and a library feeling with the books and lamps placed around the tables). REGULAR REVIEW: BACKSTORY (why come?) - Why not come here is the real question?!?! Haha...so I visited Bartleby upon a recommendation from a long time college/University friend who said she enjoyed the Salmon entree. I came on a Saturday evening with 3 friends (former co-workers). We arrived for a late dinner at 8pm. AMBIANCE - Romantic and absolutely delightful. The mood will be set here....oh, the VIBES is 100%. The dim light and candles all throughout the restaurant is perfect for a date night or a fun evening with friends. The grandeur of the whole place including the tall ceilings, intricate pattern roof details, and book cases all FOOD -- Three of us all coincidentally ordered the Cod entree while another friend, Shakira, ordered just truffle fries because she wasn't feeling good. If you enjoy seafood such as fish then you'll love the Cod. The Cod is a very light meal so add a side dish if you know you'll be hungry later. The Cod comes with potatoes and peppers along with a dashi sauce. This sauce really gave the meal a nice and strong flavour. The fish was moist and not dry. I highly recommend the Cod. I also tried some of my friend's truffle fries and they were perfect, as expected how truffle fries should taste. I'll definitely be back to Bartleby to try other menu items. **** GOAL of 150 reviews in 2024 - 9/150 total reviews in 2024 - 659 total overall Yelp reviews - Reviewed on 15 March 2024 read more

Dined a few times and I've realized that getting a table can be weird when you don't have a reservation. They pushed a bit for bar seating and offered a 45 minute wait. When i opted for the wait, i was sat at a regular table immediately so I thought that was kind of strange because is there a wait or not? Regardless, this is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in Cleveland. I love the interior, the food is very good. Great drinks. My server was busy as expected but was very tentative and entertaining. The price point is very appropriate for the quality you're getting. Picture worthy restaurant, down to the restrooms. Very unique. The decor was stunning. I could sit there for hours. I spent 15 minutes taking pictures in the restroom because the wallpaper was so pretty. Perfect for a romantic date night, birthday dinner, or night out with friends. Great atmosphere, terrible food. I went to Bartleby with my fiancé yesterday and we enjoyed the aesthetic and style of the building and the room. Our waitress was also friendly and checked in on us. My fiancé ordered the burger and I the roasted chicken. His burger looked burnt and tasted like it was cooked hours ago, but was kept on a warmer for when someone ordered it. I ordered the roasted chicken. The leg/thigh was very dry (not sure how it's possible for anyone to dry out the dark meat) and mealy. It also tasted like it was cooked hours ago and they just warmed it up for serving. It also had no taste. The breast was much better, but it was still dry. I ordered a nitro espresso martini and it had no foam on top when it was served, although it tasted good. I would go back for the ambiance and a drink, but I will not be ordering food again at that price point. Overall, it was fun, but unfortunately, the chef could improve his culinary skills. read more

Beautiful ambiance. Gets really dark at night. Lots of open space and plenty of seats. Gourmet menu with a variety of well curated options. Expensive w apps running over $15 and drinks $16-18 with entrees in the $30-40's range. The broccolini was rather hard to chew but flavorful with garlic and anchovy. The mussels app was a nice meal with plenty of mussels in a buttery broth with crab meat and plenty of flavorful garlic. The signature cocktails are pre batched unfortunately but the classic cocktails (Manhattan, Old Fashioned, etc) are made to order. My Diablo was a very typical "spicy marg" but was more sweet than spicy for sure. Overall very high prices for the food but not a rip off per se. Excellent server Maddie who was attentive and personable. read more

This place is a vibe. Genuinely, the inside is just gorgeous. I came here with friends for dinner and we had a great time. I got the ...If You Must cocktail on the recommendation of our server (who was very helpful). We started with the white pizza as our app and it was very tasty. For my main I went with the Cod. It was light and refreshing with a distinct dashi flavor which was lovely. Is this place expensive? I mean yea. But the dishes we had I thought were tasty and you're also paying for the vibe so...what can you do. I think it's definitely worth checking out. read more

Honestly this would probably be a 2 if not for atmosphere. The inside was super cool and the tree was a really fun touch. Service was decent, no complaints but no raves. As for the food, the arancini was ok but pretty bland and a little too sticky. The marinara sauce it came with for dipping was really sweet in a not super pleasant way. We also got the tortufo pizza, which was a nice mix of flavors but felt like I could've made it just as good if not better at home. The crust felt like a store bought flatbread. The mushroom ravioli was in a really delicious sauce so that was the best thing on the table! Otherwise though, definitely wouldn't come back for food read more

Bartleby is beautiful! The ambiance is so posh and polished, I felt like royalty or like Bilbo Baggins in Great Hall of Thráin. Truly extraordinary! And the service was impeccable! Our server was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. He made us feel right at home. The food was also good, but didn't quite live up to the ambiance and service. Between the three of us, we had the salmon with couscous, the arancini, the scallops, a side of asparagus, and the deconstructed berry walnut pie with crème anglaise. The salmon and arancini were both five star and the scallops were almost there, but held back by the lovely looking, but not very tasty, squid ink sauce. The asparagus were nicely cooked, with a tasty char, but needed a squeeze of lemon. The pie was tasty, but textures were not quite perfect. Despite any food imperfections, I highly recommend a trip to Bartleby - it's magical! read more

Most incredible burger 10/10 highly recommend! Our server Faron was very attentive and made the experience!

I really wanted to like this place - the atmosphere of the historic building is lovely but the food was unfortunately pretty bland, oddly cold, and for the price pretty unimpressive. Just not a lot of flavor or seasoning (burger, truffle fries, broccolini, marg pizza). $16 for a n/a sangria also seems a bit much. Was expecting more based on overall hype etc. maybe a good place to start the night for drinks or something but can't recommend the food. Seems like there's a lot of potential here. Would recommend Amba or Brightside more. Would be down to come trying brunch. Also I have found marbleroom worth the price. Seems like the menu or some thing here needs some love read more

This place is gorgeous. We could not have loved the atmosphere any more. The drinks were good and so was the service. My husband and I split the beer salad. We both liked it, and it was quite large, but it was a bit short on beets. My entree was the mushroom ravioli and it was delicious. My husband ordered the short ribs and we both found it to be much too salty. We did not enjoy it all. Nevertheless, we would not hesitate to return. read more

Bartleby is great The vibes, the drinks, and the food is all spectacular. I ordered the old fashioned and the short ribs, an excellent choice, highly recommend both. We had the mussels for our app, another great choice but would venture out next time. When the bill came around I let out an audible gulp, expensive dinner, but the excellent service and incredible food made it well worth it. read more

I would give this place 0 stars if I could, but since that's not an option, it's getting 1. They might be under new management, but the menu was disappointing from the start. $16 for a sangria poured out of a can--and it tasted like watered-down juice. Honestly, free water would have been better. For appetizers, I ordered the ricotta dip, which had zero flavor, served with what tasted like toasted Wonder Bread. Plenty of empty tables, yet they sat us on a couch meant for lounging--not ideal for dining. The only highlight was the miso salad, which was actually good. But before dropping $200 on a disappointing dinner, we decided to just get the check and leave. Very disappointed--this place looked promising but did not deliver. read more

Before coming to town I researched restaurants as every good Foodie and Yelper does. After seeing pictures of the inside with the enormous tree I knew I had to stop in. The restaurant is beautiful. The ambience is as well. We started with the Ricotta Appetizer. Wow, it was amazing. I could instantly tell it was homemade. It was drizzled with a nice EVOO. My only complaint was I wanted a larger amount. I have craved it everyday since. As for dinner, there were really not any options for me. We had a wonderful server and she checked with the kitchen. I ended up with a bland piece of Salmon that was overcooked and some over roasted broccolini. I understand the worry when cooking for people with allergies. However, it's not hard to use salt and pepper at least. The other two people I was with loved their entrees. My husband ordered the Mixed Mushroom Fettuccini which he thought was very flavorful. Our friend ordered the Gemelli which she also loved. Definitely a restaurant you should try if you haven't yet. They have a late night menu with more affordable pricing. read more

A newish spot tucked away in Ohio city. This restaurant is beautifullll. Theres high ceilings, dim lighting, old bank/library vibes, greenery, and a variety of different seating options from tables to high tops to couches. Went on a Tuesday night and it was pretty empty but heard it fills up on the weekend so would def make a reservation. The cocktails were delicious and creative. They seem to change seasonally. The food was okay and unfortunately overpriced. The Arancini came out cold and lacked some flavor. The ricotta dip was decent but nothing special. The mushroom pizza I would get again- it had a nice truffle flavor and was a good size that made the price more worth it. There are a few vegetarian options but mostly seafood/meat. Would come back for drinks and the atmosphere read more

Absolutely stunning atmosphere. Make a visit for this alone, you will be impressed. Server was great but a tad busy and I think forgot to put our entrees in. We received them an hour after we placed the order and had watched 5 other tables sat after us get their meals. We weren't in a hurry and I've been trying to practice patience so didn't say something. By the time food arrived, I can't really tell if it was THAT good or if I was just THAT hungry. If I could eat that mushroom ravioli everyday without gaining 50 pounds, I would. The sauce was incredible. Steak frites were steak frites. Nothing out of this world but hit the spot. We didn't stay for dessert because I feared another hour long wait for this next course. read more

my friends and i were rudely kicked out of this restaurant for recording with flash. we were a group of content creators who had just left an event, and decided to get food nearby. we ordered, got our food, and one of the partners, morgan yagi, came to our table being extremely rude. he was yelling at us and telling us we needed to turn off our flashes because we were ruining the experience. he did not ask nicely, didn't greet us properly, and came with aggressive energy. we all 4 of us were taken aback by his energy. then two seconds later he came back and kicked us out because we didn't move fast enough for his liking. him asking us to stop recording with flash was not an issue at all, (being a dark restaurant i understand), but all he had to do was ask nicely. he was extremely rude! mind you, we all are content creators and i have almost 150k followers across my platforms, and i am known for my food reviews. i've visited over 200 restaurants in the city of cleveland and have done reviews and have never experienced anything like this before. i will never come back to the restaurant, and am disappointed because the ambiance and food looked amazing. and the food was good from the two bites that i was able to take i truly feel like he treated us this way because we were a table of four black women, and we were the only people of color in the restaurant. i've seen that he's had other white content creators in there recording with flash with no issue at all. read more

Overall: 4/5 Vibes: 5/5 Drinks: 5/5 Food: 3/5 I came here to celebrate my friend's birthday and we had a reservation for a party of 13. The vibes are absolutely incredible, it feels like it was in an old bank. They definitely have that dark academia aesthetic, and I love all of the mirrors and books. While their cocktail menu is limited, the cocktails that we tried were very good. I had the hummingbird, which is definitely on the sweeter side but very yummy. Overall for the food, we really enjoyed the starters (arancini, crab fritters, and truffle fries), but the mains were somewhat underwhelming. I had the angel hair pasta, which was quite light and delicious, but could have been more seasoned. That seemed to be a common sentiment at the table, as the Bartleby burger was good, but was mainly meat and could have used more seasoning (eg garlic aioli). The steak frites were savory and soft, but could have used more of a sear and juicier flavor. Would definitely recommend this place for the vibes and drinks, but at the price point, I would hope the food were better. read more

Ambiance was.....interesting. Great visual appeal, but kkrazy loud, and made worse by the 9pm start of a DJ i the bar area. More on that, in a bit. Party of 7, lucky to have scored a "walk-in" reservation ("We only take reservations on-line, not on the phone. You're lucky.") on a graduation weekend. Guess that we were. Service was slow. Waiter worked hard but was over-extended. Menu was interesting, but my short ribs (rib, singular) was served luke warm and over a puree of.....something. Others at the table picked at the food, as well. BUT, worst of the moment was the noise. At 8:40 pm, the noise suddenly shot up. A waiter walked by and I asked if the music could be toned down. An emphatic "NO!" shouted back at me. Waiter added, "We have a DJ in the bar and he's in charge." I thought that he was kidding. It was literally impossible to communicate with anyone! Our waiter later came by, and again, I complained about the noise. He dutifully went off and the noise level came down. But the first waiter's attitude was just nasty. On balance, mediocre food served at a high price point and with impossibly loud ambient noise......all contributed to a less-than-enjoyable dining experience, "lucky" that we were! read more

I really loved the candied pistachios and lemon curd topping that came on the French Toast. For something Savory I selected the Bartleby Breakfast Burger and hubby ordered the Steak and Eggs. This might be one of the most beautiful restaurants in Cleveland. Truly! The ambiance is incredible. The high ceilings, dark vibes, real candelabras, and faux greenery are chic and enticing. It reminds me out of something from Beauty & The Beast (and I mean that lovingly, that was my favorite movie as a kid). The chairs were super comfortable. We had a table for two with lush velvet seating that might have been one of the most comfortable restaurant chairs I've ever sat in. Our drinks were amazing. I ordered a dirty martini and it was strong and expertly made. The vibe in the restaurant was dimly lit and perfect for a date. We could also actually hear each other talking, which was delightful! For dinner, I had the ahi tuna. My boyfriend had the steak frites. For an expensive $40 entree, I was disappointed my dish was so simple. A beautiful piece of artisan tuna on top of a small bed of coleslaw. I was still quite hungry when I finished and had to pick at my boyfriend's french fries (he noted his steak was fine but not memorable) as this was my dinner. I think we would both choose different entrees if we return, as these are expensive dishes for what you're getting. Maybe small plates and drinks for us next time. Our server, Keegan, was outstanding. She was kind, funny and very attentive. They appeared short staffed and she was handling her many tables like a total pro. I'm happy Bartleby has such a great team and I hope they can continue to evolve and grow their menu! read more

I came here for brunch and got the Bartleby burger. I would say the most memorable part of my meal was the decor of this place, which definitely contributed to the cost of the meal. The whole place has a dark ambience with lighting mainly from natural lighting from the tall ceiling. But the food itself left a lot to be desired. The burger bun tasted bland and sightly stale, but the patty itself tasted fresh, though not super flavorful. I think this is definitely a restaurant for certain individuals and certain scenarios: mainly those who wants a good environment rather than a meal that will blow their socks off. read more
