There's an almost church-like quality to the space in the most striking, unexpected way. The juxtaposition of elegance and edge makes the entire restaurant feel intentional and memorable. I sat at the bar and had a salad, which was fresh and satisfying, but the overall experience really stood out. The staff was warm, attentive, and welcoming without being intrusive--perfect for a relaxed but elevated evening. I didn't take many photos because I wanted to stay present, but this is absolutely a place worth capturing. Bartleby occupies the historic United Bank Building (former home of the Crop Bistro). I have been frequenting Bartleby for the last year for book club meetings, silent readings, and DJ sets. I really look forward to every single visit. AMBIANCE: At book club we call the ambiance dark academia. The space is grandeur, dim and illuminated by candlelight. There are dramatic mirrors, a tree, and fascinating book decor. It's an unmatched experience and you feel transported to the place of absolute peace. It feels like dining at some grand mansion. Inside you'll find tasteful and too comfortable velvet furniture, upscale booths and tables. TYPICAL GUESTS: Most guests are couples dining in the incredibly intimate and romantic atmosphere. It's a wonderful date spot because due to the lack of windows and dim atmosphere you really feel immersed into your dining partner and conversation. I personally love coming here solo, ordering a fancy dinner, and having a ball during candlelit dinner. When I arrive with the book club, I am always amazed by how seamlessly we are accommodated and meticulously catered to. FOOD/DRINKS: I really enjoy exploring Bartleby menu and never get bored. I get bored very easily so it's shocking this restaurant is still getting me so excited. My favorite dish is Roasted Chicken with corn puree, asparagus, and rosemary jus ($29). The chicken serving is very generous. It's so delicious and hearty. Bartleby Burger with angus beef is my second favorite. It's one of the best burgers in the city. By now I tried most food on the menu. During book club most gals love to order pizza. Financiers were my loves on the menu. They seem to be discontinued now, so next I'll try Pavlova. Drinks here are truly refined. Every cocktail is prepared with so much skill and out of really high end liquor. I usually order specials provided to the book club, seldom explore the drink menu. Cocktails are priced at $16 and are well worth it. I also sometimes order hot tea, arrive with the book, and get lost in the ambiance. SERVICE: The service is top notch. I'm always amazed at how the restaurant can quickly serve such a huge group when we arrive with the book club. When I dine here solo, I also get shocked at how attentive the experience is. Service staff is very polite and attentive. Host staff always so friendly and welcome. I can't think of a better service experience in Cleveland to be honest. LOCATION: The restaurant is located in Ohio City. There is plenty of street parking in the area. The most convenient parking is at the West Side Market (paid basis). Great atmosphere, terrible food. I went to Bartleby with my fiancé yesterday and we enjoyed the aesthetic and style of the building and the room. Our waitress was also friendly and checked in on us. My fiancé ordered the burger and I the roasted chicken. His burger looked burnt and tasted like it was cooked hours ago, but was kept on a warmer for when someone ordered it. I ordered the roasted chicken. The leg/thigh was very dry (not sure how it's possible for anyone to dry out the dark meat) and mealy. It also tasted like it was cooked hours ago and they just warmed it up for serving. It also had no taste. The breast was much better, but it was still dry. I ordered a nitro espresso martini and it had no foam on top when it was served, although it tasted good. my friends and i were rudely kicked out of this restaurant for recording with flash. we were a group of content creators who had just left an event, and decided to get food nearby. we ordered, got our food, and one of the partners, morgan yagi, came to our table being extremely rude. he was yelling at us and telling us we needed to turn off our flashes because we were ruining the experience. he did not ask nicely, didn't greet us properly, and came with aggressive energy. we all 4 of us were taken aback by his energy. then two seconds later he came back and kicked us out because we didn't move fast enough for his liking. him asking us to stop recording with flash was not an issue at all, (being a dark restaurant i understand), but all he had to do was ask nicely. he was extremely rude! mind you, we all are content creators and i have almost 150k followers across my platforms, and i am known for my food reviews. i've visited over 200 restaurants in the city of cleveland and have done reviews and have never experienced anything like this before. i will never come back to the restaurant, and am disappointed because the ambiance and food looked amazing. and the food was good from the two bites that i was able to take i truly feel like he treated us this way because we were a table of four black women, and we were the only people of color in the restaurant. i've seen that he's had other white content creators in there recording with flash with no issue at all. read more

Dined a few times and I've realized that getting a table can be weird when you don't have a reservation. They pushed a bit for bar seating and offered a 45 minute wait. When i opted for the wait, i was sat at a regular table immediately so I thought that was kind of strange because is there a wait or not? The mussels app was a nice meal with plenty of mussels in a buttery broth with crab meat and plenty of flavorful garlic. The signature cocktails are pre batched unfortunately but the classic cocktails (Manhattan, Old Fashioned, etc) are made to order. My Diablo was a very typical "spicy marg" but was more sweet than spicy for sure. Overall very high prices for the food but not a rip off per se. Honestly this would probably be a 2 if not for atmosphere. The inside was super cool and the tree was a really fun touch. Service was decent, no complaints but no raves. As for the food, the arancini was ok but pretty bland and a little too sticky. The marinara sauce it came with for dipping was really sweet in a not super pleasant way. We also got the tortufo pizza, which was a nice mix of flavors but felt like I could've made it just as good if not better at home. The crust felt like a store bought flatbread. Just not a lot of flavor or seasoning (burger, truffle fries, broccolini, marg pizza). $16 for a n/a sangria also seems a bit much. Between the three of us, we had the salmon with couscous, the arancini, the scallops, a side of asparagus, and the deconstructed berry walnut pie with crème anglaise. My only complaint was I wanted a larger amount. I have craved it everyday since. As for dinner, there were really not any options for me. We had a wonderful server and she checked with the kitchen. I ended up with a bland piece of Salmon that was overcooked and some over roasted broccolini. I understand the worry when cooking for people with allergies. However, it's not hard to use salt and pepper at least. The other two people I was with loved their entrees. My husband ordered the Mixed Mushroom Fettuccini which he thought was very flavorful. Waiter worked hard but was over-extended. Menu was interesting, but my short ribs (rib, singular) was served luke warm and over a puree of.....something. Others at the table picked at the food, as well. BUT, worst of the moment was the noise. At 8:40 pm, the noise suddenly shot up. A waiter walked by and I asked if the music could be toned down. An emphatic "NO!" shouted back at me. Waiter added, "We have a DJ in the bar and he's in charge." I thought that he was kidding. It was literally impossible to communicate with anyone! Our waiter later came by, and again, I complained about the noise. He dutifully went off and the noise level came down. But the first waiter's attitude was just nasty. I had the angel hair pasta, which was quite light and delicious, but could have been more seasoned. That seemed to be a common sentiment at the table, as the Bartleby burger was good, but was mainly meat and could have used more seasoning (eg garlic aioli). Recently sat down for brunch at Bartleby one of Ohio City's Hottest New Restaurants. As soon as you walk into this space you are blown away at the intricate details of the decor. After ordering drinks we started off with something Sweet. Hubby ordered the Chocolate and Vanilla Waffles and I selected the French Toast. I really loved the candied pistachios and lemon curd topping that came on the French Toast. For something Savory I selected the Bartleby Breakfast Burger and hubby ordered the Steak and Eggs. Hubby's steak was cooked perfectly and had a yummy chimichurri sauce drizzled on top. Overall we really enjoyed our dining experience. This might be one of the most beautiful restaurants in Cleveland. Truly! The ambiance is incredible. The high ceilings, dark vibes, real candelabras, and faux greenery are chic and enticing. We had a table for two with lush velvet seating that might have been one of the most comfortable restaurant chairs I've ever sat in. Our drinks were amazing. For dinner, I had the ahi tuna. My boyfriend had the steak frites. For an expensive $40 entree, I was disappointed my dish was so simple. A beautiful piece of artisan tuna on top of a small bed of coleslaw. I was still quite hungry when I finished and had to pick at my boyfriend's french fries (he noted his steak was fine but not memorable) as this was my dinner. I think we would both choose different entrees if we return, as these are expensive dishes for what you're getting. Maybe small plates and drinks for us next time. The whole place has a dark ambience with lighting mainly from natural lighting from the tall ceiling. But the food itself left a lot to be desired.
