Looking to die via a workout, look no further than Barry's! It's similar to Orangetheory except it's only 2 stations and the treadmill requires a run. The one thing I don't love about Barry's is that they don't offer settings for power walkers. It can be a bit intimidating if you aren't a runner. Go to Nazinga's class as she's my favorite!! She's a great motivator and her workouts BURN. I'm just not a fan because of the fast-paced and advanced nature of the classes.

It's hard and sweaty. I also hate running and treadmills, but I knew this beforehand. I went through ClassPass as a last minute replacement because the 305 Fitness dance class down the street cancelled. Would I go back? No. Well, maybe for a shake from the juice bar. On the upside, the locker room is nice with little amenities to freshen up after class. I saw at least 3 showers.

Barry's is HIIT on steroids. I workout regularly and thought I was fit until I took a class here. It's challenging, but in a good way. The classes are intense. When you signup, you can choose to start on the treadmill or the floor. Each weekday is a different workout (i.e., full body, legs, arms, etc.). I took class on "Abs + Ass" day (Thursday) and I woke up the next day thinking that I had a stomachache... but it was really my abs on fire from the workout from the evening before! My coach was Mark and his playlist was boppin' and his instructions were clear throughout the class. The staff is friendly, helpful, and attentive. They explain where everything is and what to do if it's your first time there. They also have a smoothie bar and sell their own branded apparel. There are plentiful lockers and well-stocked bathrooms (hair ties, lotion, deodorant, face wash, feminine products, etc.). Although the classes are pricey (and slightly reduced with the purchase of a package), I'd definitely come to class more if the location was more convenient. Hopefully they open in the 'burbs of VA sometime soon!

Finally had my first Barry's class after considering it for years! Note there is not a lot of parking around as it's a quite busy area. Plan ahead to arrive early. If it's your first time you'll need to sign up for an account and sign a waiver which can take 5 to 10 minutes depending on the availability of the staff. The studios are luxury and very clean. They offer a ton of amenities like towels, hair ties, and even have their own smoothie bar. With my first class, it was a bit hard to follow. The music was so loud I could barely hear the instructors voice. I tried looking around but everyone takes it at their own (modifications, slower, etc). The instructor does not demonstrate. It was very fast paced but fun! I felt a little lost but maybe there are other more descriptive classes.

My friend referred me to Barry's for a free class and we had a great time. The workout I got was intense and I really felt like I got a great workout after just 50 minutes. The locker rooms are stocked with nice things, like good-smelling lotion and other toiletries, plastic bags where you can put your dirty clothes in after, tampons, etc. You can pre-order a smoothie that will be ready after your workout. At $9, the smoothies are priced a pretty penny so I've only tried one so far: the green latifah. It was SO good and miles above what most smoothie chains can offer. The main criticisms I have, though, have me not really wanting to come back frequently: -The cost (averaging around $30/class) is too pricey for me, but I get why it's priced this way as a boutique gym. The nice part is you do not need a membership or subscription. You can pay as you go. I received a discounted offer after taking the free class which was nice. - I'm not sure if this is intentional, but the trainers don't correct your form. They just shout commands at you. The weight exercises are simple enough, but I would feel slightly better if they at least observed to see if you were practicing good form. However, I do like how trained demonstrates what you're supposed to do after each block because I would probably not remember what to do. -The fitness room is really dark and a bit too cramped. Why are the treadmills so small? -I was surprised they didn't offer a tour of the studio and was just supposed to figure out where everything was. Last thing, and maybe it's just me, they seem to have gotten lighting right in the bathrooms and fitness room because I feel like I look thinner in the mirrors haha.

Although they only have 55 min classes (as opposed to the 1 hr classes at other Barry's), DC does it right! The studio, including the locker rooms, are incredibly spacious and clean. Classes are upbeat, sweat inducing, and tough. This Barry's, unlike the one I attend in Boston, even gives you cold towels post workout. If you haven't been to a Barry's before; absolutely worth it.

No matter what shape you are in, who you will be entrusting your body to is very important. I can say with full confidence that every single one of the what? three bad reviews? Of Sweatbox  should be cast aside because they are irrelevant since none of them talk about the actual sweat method and what it does to your body. Firstly, if you are worried if fat shaming/ageism exists here. The answer is a firm NO. I am older, I am overweight , and I was  welcomed with open arms, made a part of the family immediately, and that has not changed since the first class. I went to one OrangeTheory location a year or so back and was full on fat-and-age shamed and that made my self esteem spiral down into dark abyss for a very long time. Because words hurt, because I am already so vulnerable and frightened to cross the threshold of the gym, I need support, not otherwise. SweatBox is all welcoming, all inclusive type of place. Yes, they are located inside an exact copy of the Globo Gym from Dodgeball, (I got jokes) but just walk to the back of the first floor, to the Sweatbox counter, as far as I understand, gym and them are two separate entities. I purchased a 7-day, $34.00 unlimited trial pass online, came 30 minutes early for the instruction session (important to come early, instructors won't say no to you if you show up 5 minutes prior to class, but ultimately you are shorthanding yourself on the instruction part - don't you want to know as much as you can about bike set up, and components of training? And remember that instructors have other student s  to take care of prior to class) I began my training on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019 and I made sure to come every day, dragging my self in sometimes, even if my body screamed to go get nachos instead. The instructors I've experienced during the trial week were: Alexx G Shawn M Kevin D Ashley D I loved all the instructors, Alexx is all tough love, just as described in his bio, but I love his light show and music choices. Kevin has an amazing aura and energy and makes you feel included. Then comes Ashley, wow. I don't know if she somehow hypnotizes the class, but you get in the zone, stop thinking of outside world, and all you focus on is her voice, her example poses, and her corrections, nothing else. At the end of the class, when you finally come to, you realize that you worked out for a full hour and  never looked at the clock once! Shawn is a rare soul. I have my collection of special, big hearted people, the list is short, but Shawn is on it. First of all the energy during his classes is through the roof, he is so charismatic, you WANT to do good to show him your appreciation. But my experience with him is also more personal. When I felt embarrassed, questioned myself, felt weak, cried like a baby after second class, Shawn in the gentlest of ways supported me, was there for me, helped me get past those hurdles and I cannot be more thankful. He always has words of encouragement, listens with attention, he is present. What an amazing human being. To sum up - 15 lbs. down (results will vary of course) and I signed up for an unlimited monthly. They got me good.

From the moment, I walked in I felt welcomed especially with Brad taking me into the studio early to get me acclimated with the equipment. Brad was an amazing instructor as well, checking on me every few rounds to make sure I was okay and if I needed modifications for anything. I loved his energy throughout the class too. I typically never ask about the membership plans after a class but today I did. I have one more class on my intro offer but I am highly considering getting a membership. I've done other HILT style classes at the other gyms but this one is the best.

The instructors were really helpful and gave me some modification options. It would probably help to have some background knowledge of common lifts, but the instructors show the movements and they play on video screens if you need it. Everyone attending was generally in their own zone, so there isn't a lot of chatting because you really focus on getting the exercises done in the set times. I will say that the classes go by super quickly because you're always moving. Cons: The programming is set for the whole month. So each day of the week has its set program and you do that each week for the whole month. For me, this would get old (I really need variety). On the plus side, it does mean you get to see active gains throughout the month. The membership plan is a little pricey. I get why it costs so much, since they do have to cover rent and you only really attend during the class sessions. It isn't a type of gym where you just drop in when you want to use certain equipment. The unlimited monthly membership is $299, but in reality you are getting 30 or 31 classes depending on the month. Since the classes are the same all day, it is unlikely you would do two classes in a day, right? So the pricing is about $10/class if you do the unlimited monthly pass and you go every day. Some of the equipment was pretty smelly. I was at one station that honestly made me gag a little... I think the bench or maybe the dumbells had never been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution.

I spent about five hours at the Yards location this week to thoroughly evaluate it before committing as I've been getting spammed in the mail, and I'm glad I did. The staff's attitude was consistently condescending, from the Senior Membership Advisor (Saad Siddiqui) upselling me, person trainers roaming around the facility, to the people at front desk. My main issue how the staff addressed my comment about the soft flooring in the free-weight area, which is completely unsuitable for barbell squats. When I brought this up, the staff condescendingly told me to just use the Smith machine or use the Olympic platform, completely dismissing a valid safety concern. There was a Titan Fitness safety squat bar (SSB) that I had no idea how much it weighed. I asked two person trainers (you'll see PT and their clients everywhere in the gym) how much the bar weighed. The PTs said they had no idea and left it at that. The front desk staff was equally apathetic. I've had better customer service at Planet Fitness for a tiny fraction of the cost. This place is motivated about locking you into their membership plan and signing you up to the many classes and services they offer.
