I finally got myself to the Red Room that everyone's talkin bout! I was a little intimidated just from what I'd heard, but I've been working out consistently and taking HIIT classes almost every day for about 6 months now, so I figured I wouldn't exactly die. I found a total body LIFT class on a Sunday morning and signed up for it; my partner decided he'd join in on the fun too :) LIFT is a dumbbell/resistance band workout minus the treadmill, so I figured it'd be a good one to start with. We arrived 20 minutes early to the class, and of course, we were the first ones there. We were assigned the last 2 boxes in the back corner - I appreciated that because I could watch people in front of me to make sure I was doing the correct movements. Mirrors line the walls to allow you to check your form, especially in those deadlifts/squats. The studio is nice and clean. Locker rooms looked nice too! I think I'm ready for a regular Barry's class with the treadmill portion. Next time, that's what I'm signing up for!

I've been to other Barry's locations in New York and I have to say this is one of the nicest locations. Great amenities, the Malin + Goetz candles burning smell great in the locker rooms, and they give you cold towels post class to help you cool off -- GENIUS! The studio is split between two floors with the fuel bar and some retail in the lobby and the locker rooms, studio and more retail upstairs. The instructors were nice and moved around the floor to correct and tweak form (which I absolutely loved). Their enthusiasm was infectious and super helpful when you're doing double floor and feel like your limbs are going to fall off.

TLDR: not worth the price. This was my first time taking a class at a Chicago Barry's. I've been to Barry's in LA and have always had such great experiences. The instructor for the class I took seemed annoyed to be teaching and basically just went through the motions, all while being sarcastic. If I was new to exercising, I feel like I would have been so lost... I watched a couple of people struggle to follow the verbal cues without any demonstration of the exercise being called out. Overall, I enjoyed my workout but the instructor left a lot to be desired; if you have to pay full price, I would say skip it.

Wow. I have been a Barry's frequenter for quite a while now (in Boston/Dallas/NYC) and have to say I had one of my best experiences here! Having heard a lot about Joe N., I made sure to sign up for his class as I was in town this week. I dragged my two friends here with me, and while we are absolutely dead, we have never had a better class. He was one of the toughest instructors, but that's definitely what we prefer anyways AND he was absolutely hilarious. I have honestly never worked so hard in a class before, and I was so happy I finally got to take his class! In addition, he was just so nice and open when I talked to him after! Unlike many of the more famous fitness instructors that I take classes from (but love anyways). The river north studio was expansive and clean, and the staff members were all AMAZING! I try to visit every Barry's when I visit new cities and was on the lookout for Barry's Chicago apparel. They didn't have it out on display, but when I asked, the guy at the front was so nice and checked in the back for me. I got the cutest Chicago gear and was amazed by the generosity and general fabulousness of the whole experience. I can't wait to be back soon!

I'm personally not a fan of the group fitness class craze, but attended Barry's for a fundraiser for a nonprofit. I didn't know what to expect, and was honestly nervous that I was going to have my butt kicked by the instructors. The facilities are very clean, large, and modern. I was instantly impressed by the size of the building and the niceness of the locker rooms. The workout room (AKA the room of ultimate sweat life) is also very large, with treadmills lining the wall and space in the middle for strength-based work. I don't know how a crowded class would be like, but we had about 30 people that fit comfortably in the room. You switch off between high-intensity work on the treadmills and strength-based work that sends your heart rate into different zones for maximum calorie-burn. I was super impressed by the instructor, Kate. Because the nonprofit that was holding the fundraiser serves individuals with physical disabilities to participate in sports, Kate was working with a lot of different physical abilities and restrictions. She executed a flawless and high intensity class, and was able to ensure that everyone got a hard workout to meet their ability level. The nice thing about the class is that you can tailor it to your own needs for a workout. All in all, my experience at Barry's was awesome and I walked out feeling like a rockstar. I cannot see myself coming here regularly (a bit too expensive for my taste), but it was a good workout and I was fully impressed by the fantastic staff and facilities. Keep up the good work, Barry's!

My work team loves Barry's and insists on coming every week. One of our favorite parts is that you can pre-order a smoothie to be picked up right after your workout (the smoothies are very heavy and rich with protein.) The locker room is bright and stocked with everything you may need (hair ties, towels, lotion, feminine hygiene products, etc). I've used their showers 2x though and have had cold waters and weak pressures. I've only had good experiences with each new instructor. The intervals are longer than other places like Torch @ Studio3 and allows you time to work hard and sweat at each station. Kate has been our toughest instructor and kicked everyone's butts. The prices are expensive, but I would definitely recommend if a friend invites you or just to sign up for a free trial class.

I love the HIIT style with intervals of running (speed, incline) and strength training (body area targeted differs depending on day of the week). I always leave feeling confident, energized, and like I got a GREAT workout in. The instructors are so motivating and energetic that it's genuinely contagious. I also like how every single class I've been to is different-- they switch it up constantly and are really creative. To top it off, they made me feel like a queen on my birthday with this sign at check in. They also left a birthday card on my treadmill. Love Barry's :)

I came in with 3 of my girl friends, we were all new to this location and class. Let's just say, this 50 min run + lower body focused class was an absolute caloric BURNER!!! Our instructor, Jen D., was so motivating and truly pushed all of us to our pinnacle -- absolute kick as* of a coach and I personally recommend trying out her class, even if it's just one. We took a 6:40pm, 50 min class, and wanted to shower afterwards. On 2/27/24 there was a rain storm we didn't realize was projected to happen after our class. We went in for a shower, and as soon as I stepped out, a kind member of Barry's let us know about this storm and that she would appreciate if we could try to get ready as fast as possible so that we, along with the staff won't be stranded there. She mentioned she along with the rest of her coworkers would like to leave early for this purpose but, that they will stay until we leave. I didn't get her name, but she was forth coming about making us aware of a storm and that we should head out as soon as we can. I was drying off and changed into my clothes and dried the roots of my hair (unknowing of a *rain* storm, ugh!) I would not have tried drying the roots of my hair if I knew it was going to be pouring outside! After briefly doing that, she came back in and let me know the closed at 8pm and that we needed to leave so, I understood but was still waiting for my friend to get out of the shower. It's 7:55pm, and a different member named Tina came in and in a very rude tone told us that we were given warnings to leave, yet we were not leaving. I reminded her that I was fully dressed waiting on my friend who just got out of the shower and that once she gets clothes on that we will leave. I asked for her name and she mentioned I was being inappropriate for asking. As I was trying to de-escalate the way her approach came off, she stormed out of the ladies locker room. I was shocked! We got our stuff and walked out but before leaving, I mentioned this was my first time and I didn't know they closed at 8pm, nor was I aware of how severe the storm was, truly! I mentioned to Tina I don't want bad blood but, this experience she gave me made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. There was no true apology for how she spoke to my friend and I, but now I just don't feel welcome which is hard to say after a great workout. My friends and I would like to keep going to this location and we wished we knew more about closing times ahead of our workout to plan accordingly and ultimately avoid this unnecessarily uncomfortable experience that was truly brought on by how we were talked to. I'm sure if we were trusted to leave after being communicated to kindly, we would have shed a few minutes from our time there. We left at 8:23pm. Again, I would love to keep coming here, but now I'm questioning keeping my package and currently on the fence about recommending this location to athletes in my network. It is so valid to feel frustrated and almost irritable at guests that aren't moving fast enough; I feel that! It is not okay to talk to people in the way we were talked to. It's not hospitality, it's hostility, and it's truly not something I'm sure was intentional. At the end of the day, we're paying for the class and the experience at Barry's. We left disheartened by the way we were talked to. I'm a very easy going gal and deeply understand that everyone is going through something. Everyone. But again, we were complying and there is a way to talk with people - this was certainly not one of them.

SWEAT was offering a 7 day free trial for new customers which I found very helpful. They have a range of classes that target specific body parts, like the Arms & Core workout or the Butt and Legs workout. They offer classes almost every part of the day including before and after work hours. I even saw a few classes that start at around 5:30am. They have two different and convenient locations around the city and I believe you can attend classes in both location if you are a member, but I'd call and ask just to double check. My first time was at the Gold Coast location. It was a little confusing to get to at first, but when I saw a bunch of people in sweats and gym bags going down to a basement, I was able to finally locate the studio. There is no front desk or anyone to greet you upon entry. I had no idea where to go or where to place my bag. I had to ask a few people before a nice lady that's a member there helped me out. There are OPEN lockers right outside the studio (and yes there's only one studio), so I wouldn't bring anything valuable just in case. They offer free towels and you can just dump them into a laundry basket when you're done. The studio itself is large and can fit about 25-30 people comfortably. It has weights, treadmills and a bunch of other workout gear that are used during certain classes. Now here's the deal - These classes are not easy pace. They go quick and it's up to you to catch up. The instructors will try their best to help you out, however, they have an entire class to attend to, so sometimes you won't be able to get the help you need. I am not a very active person, so I was not able to catch up AT ALL during the Arms & Core workout class. It seems like classes are very advanced and target people that have already been on the workout train for years. As for someone who is just getting back on track, these classes are not for you. On the bright side, they do offer personal training, so I might be looking into that. FYI - the only contact you can have with a representative is through phone or email. I was very interested in these classes before I actually tried them out, and when I expressed that to the representative through email, I was automatically charged for a membership right after the 7 day free trial ended. I was able to get a refund though, but I was a little upset that my card was charged without my permission.

You walk into a lounge area where you can view an active class and see what type of exercises you'll be doing. Each day has a particular work out so that you can go on different dates and not work the same muscles. The locker rooms are a bit weird with a long hallway to hang your coats and stick your bags in cubes, not lockers. The locker room has two showers and two closed off bathrooms. They have spray deodorant, hand soap in both bar and dispenser. The room is small, so if you have a class ending or beginning, it can get crowded. There are small cubes to put your personals as well. Once in the class, they have a lot of weights, ropes hanging from the ceiling, row machines, Ski machines and high boxes to jump on. The classes are made up of intervals so you are grouped with a few people and rotate to another set of exercises. The classes I've been to so far with Joey and Ally have been tough, but great. I try to keep up and not feel intimated by the people that have been coming here for a while, but trust me, no one is looking at you. Everyone here is trying to work on their physique and at the end of this class, you are guaranteed to sweat. The music is always great and is loud to get you going. I can already see a difference with my endurance, strength and physique.

While the floor of the machine took a little getting used to, I was also facing backwards and strapped in, which made the whole thing a little odd at first. We sprinted, worked our core, did pushups, and used weights. It was a good, high impact workout that centered around interval training. Once I had a feel for the place, my second workout was even better. Cullen was an awesome instructor and he really kept us motivated, encouraging us to push ourselves until the last second. We could see if we were heeding to his advice by watching the big screens in the studio that showed us in real time how we were doing, based on our heart rate monitors. I got a great sweat in over that weekend thanks to the instructors and I found the desk staff to be very welcoming and helpful. The space is clean and new, the bathrooms are spotless and very "homey", and the equipment is sanitized regularly. This is a unique workout for sure and it can be tailored to your fitness level.
