Barry's never fails to provide an up-tempo, heart-pounding workout. It is in the same vein as Orange Theory and Shred415, but Barry's has found a loyal following. I've been to a few classes at this location and the River North studio and have enjoyed the variety between workouts- no two are the same! I recommend arriving 10-15 minutes prior to the start of your class. There are full locker rooms for men and women with showers and restrooms. There are also storage lockers to the right of the front desk. This area gets the most congested as one class ends (50 people out) and another class begins (50 people waiting to get in the studio). There's limited space and only a few benches to sit on, so you might use this time to stretch, since you get moving right away! You can browse the merchandise or pre-order a smoothie while you wait. The smoothie variety is wide, and you can customize if need be. I asked for a Whole30 compliant drink and it was no problem. The music is bumping, so grab ear plugs from the front desk if you want to. Each class can accommodate over 50 people, but it runs smoothly. When you check in at the front desk, you'll receive your treadmill or floor station number. Both the treadmills and floor benches are numbered, so you rotate between your same-numbered stations instead of finding an open spot. What I like most is the recommended speed ranges on the treadmill for walking, jogging, running, and sprinting. Everyone runs at a different pace, but the instructor calls out a range to give you a benchmark (ie run between 5-7 mph), from which you can adjust accordingly. At the end of your 10-15 minute running interval, you proceed to the floor for dumbbell, body weight, or resistance band exercises; people who started on the floor move to the treadmill. Then you switch back and forth following the instructor's directions. The hour passes quickly and the variation between sets makes it unpredictable and fun! If you have a serious injury, I'd avoid this altogether. But for those able to run between 2-4 miles and lift free weights with full range of motion, this is the place for you!

Barry's is basically the Soul Cycle of HIIT classes. The studio is really really nice, everyone that works there is cool and hip, and the classes are amazing. Literally the only difference between the two is the actual content of the class and the smoothie bar at Barry's. These classes kick your ass. It's honestly really hard to do the entire class at the level they want you to, but that's obviously the point. I'll know I've succeeded in life when I can make it through a Barry's class without having to slow down my treadmill early or take a pause on the floor. I've taken a lot of HIIT classes in the city, and I think Barry's tops all of them (Shred, Torch, OTF). The music, the teachers, the exercises - all top notch! The fuel bar is also really good, and so convenient to have right there for after your workout. And the cold scented towels!!! Amazing. Excited to have this close by in Lincoln Park!

You're going to need the pins and hair ties... the sweat is unbelievable!

Tried out the Barry's Bootcamp for the first time on Thursday, 5:30pm Abs (more like Ab Shred and Sped on Tread till Dead) class with Trista G. This is one of the hardest classes I've ever done in Chicago (other one is Pure Strength at Equinox). Holy crap, I thought I was in good enough shape to handle bootcamp classes, but Trista's class really pushed me to test my limits! I was assigned a bench work (on The Step) first followed by HIIT intervals on the treadmill. We did about 4 rounds of Abs and treadmill sprinting intervals until the hour is up. The high-tempo, top 40 music was great to move to. My heart was through the roof, abs were on fire, and I literally thought I could pass out if I pushed myself to go any faster than 8 mph on the treadmill (which many people did!). After it was all done, I was so proud of myself and the other students were very supportive and slapped hands with each other in congratulations. When we exited the classroom, we were given cold (eucalyptus? scented) therapeutic towels to cool down. Barry's has many great amenities: hair ties/bobby pins sweep your hair from your sweat-drenched face, ear plugs if you're sensitive to loud music, locker rooms (lockers are square and small -- not big enough for a backpack), coat rack, bath towels, clean showers, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, deodorant, lotion, plastic laundry bags, q-tips, etc. The classes are $30 each if you don't buy a package, which is pricey. But in the future, I may want to do a group event here for celebrations or even just a treat for myself.

Seasonal smoothies at the end of each work out!

Great workout that burns the most calories in 45-55 minutes! Full body days are great to get a cardio and strength workout in.

I was greeted by upbeat music and friendly staff working to check me in and welcoming me to my first class. I chose the 45 minute torch class with Matt J. I typically work out on my own, so going into a class setting had me a little nervous. Matt immediately put my worries at ease. He introduced me to all the equipment 1:1 prior to our class starting which I really appreciated. I could tell he cared about making sure I felt comfortable and welcomed. The 45 minute class divides time between the treadmill, floorwork, and the rowing machine. We started on the treadmill in dynamic mode. This was my first name using dynamic mode, and dang did it kick my butt! Floorwork focused mainly on upper body but we incorporated some abs in there too. For the rowing machine, we would mix abs and triceps in between rowing sets. We went through each station three times in the 45 minute workout. Matt played a fun mix of music and did an amazing job keeping everyone hyped up and encouraged during the workout! I really like the team environment of a group fitness class, and having an instructor encouraging me really made me push myself more than I typically would just going to the gym solo. I had so much fun at Studio Three, and it made me want to give the cycling and yoga classes a try as well! Thank you Matt for a fantastic experience for this newbie.

I've recently started getting back into fitness and working out, and was looking to tryout a few…read moreclasses before I commit to anything. SWEAT was offering a 7 day free trial for new customers which I found very helpful. They have a range of classes that target specific body parts, like the Arms & Core workout or the Butt and Legs workout. They offer classes almost every part of the day including before and after work hours. I even saw a few classes that start at around 5:30am. They have two different and convenient locations around the city and I believe you can attend classes in both location if you are a member, but I'd call and ask just to double check. My first time was at the Gold Coast location. It was a little confusing to get to at first, but when I saw a bunch of people in sweats and gym bags going down to a basement, I was able to finally locate the studio. There is no front desk or anyone to greet you upon entry. I had no idea where to go or where to place my bag. I had to ask a few people before a nice lady that's a member there helped me out. There are OPEN lockers right outside the studio (and yes there's only one studio), so I wouldn't bring anything valuable just in case. They offer free towels and you can just dump them into a laundry basket when you're done. The studio itself is large and can fit about 25-30 people comfortably. It has weights, treadmills and a bunch of other workout gear that are used during certain classes. Now here's the deal - These classes are not easy pace. They go quick and it's up to you to catch up. The instructors will try their best to help you out, however, they have an entire class to attend to, so sometimes you won't be able to get the help you need. I am not a very active person, so I was not able to catch up AT ALL during the Arms & Core workout class. It seems like classes are very advanced and target people that have already been on the workout train for years. As for someone who is just getting back on track, these classes are not for you. On the bright side, they do offer personal training, so I might be looking into that. FYI - the only contact you can have with a representative is through phone or email. I was very interested in these classes before I actually tried them out, and when I expressed that to the representative through email, I was automatically charged for a membership right after the 7 day free trial ended. I was able to get a refund though, but I was a little upset that my card was charged without my permission.

You walk into a lounge area where you can view an active class and see what type of exercises you'll be doing. Each day has a particular work out so that you can go on different dates and not work the same muscles. The locker rooms are a bit weird with a long hallway to hang your coats and stick your bags in cubes, not lockers. The locker room has two showers and two closed off bathrooms. They have spray deodorant, hand soap in both bar and dispenser. The room is small, so if you have a class ending or beginning, it can get crowded. There are small cubes to put your personals as well. Once in the class, they have a lot of weights, ropes hanging from the ceiling, row machines, Ski machines and high boxes to jump on. The classes are made up of intervals so you are grouped with a few people and rotate to another set of exercises. The classes I've been to so far with Joey and Ally have been tough, but great. I try to keep up and not feel intimated by the people that have been coming here for a while, but trust me, no one is looking at you. Everyone here is trying to work on their physique and at the end of this class, you are guaranteed to sweat. The music is always great and is loud to get you going. I can already see a difference with my endurance, strength and physique.

We've both been on an exercise kick recently and she ensured me that Sproing was an excellent workout. During the first of my two workouts of the weekend, I found myself trying to adjust to the machine. It's a cross between a treadmill and a mattress. While the floor of the machine took a little getting used to, I was also facing backwards and strapped in, which made the whole thing a little odd at first. We sprinted, worked our core, did pushups, and used weights. It was a good, high impact workout that centered around interval training. Once I had a feel for the place, my second workout was even better. Cullen was an awesome instructor and he really kept us motivated, encouraging us to push ourselves until the last second. We could see if we were heeding to his advice by watching the big screens in the studio that showed us in real time how we were doing, based on our heart rate monitors. I got a great sweat in over that weekend thanks to the instructors and I found the desk staff to be very welcoming and helpful. The space is clean and new, the bathrooms are spotless and very "homey", and the equipment is sanitized regularly. This is a unique workout for sure and it can be tailored to your fitness level. Filled with enthusiasm and energy, the sproing fitness instructor definitely motivated each and every one of us to work hard and push ourselves to get the most out of the workout. A heart rate monitor will be attached to an elastic band that you strap around your waist. There is a screen that shows how each individual's % max heart rate which essentially shows how hard you're working out. You are attached to the sproing machine with a Velcro strap that you wrap around your waist and you do exercises on a soft, cushioned surface. The idea of sproing is to do running based high intensity interval training (HIIT) - 20 seconds of work intervals with 10 seconds of rest intervals. Each class is 45 minutes where it's 30 minutes of HIIT. At the end of the class, you get emailed a summary of your workout results which shows how many calories you burned. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Sure, it may feel like your body will give up on you and you'll feel really sore after..but it hurts so good. With an incredible staff + intense but fun workout, I highly, highly recommend sproing fitness!
