First Studio Three class in the books and I gotta say, I finally understand what all the hype is about! The space is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and reminds me more of a spa than a gym. I was greeted by upbeat music and friendly staff working to check me in and welcoming me to my first class. I chose the 45 minute torch class with Matt J. I typically work out on my own, so going into a class setting had me a little nervous. Matt immediately put my worries at ease. He introduced me to all the equipment 1:1 prior to our class starting which I really appreciated. I could tell he cared about making sure I felt comfortable and welcomed. The 45 minute class divides time between the treadmill, floorwork, and the rowing machine. We started on the treadmill in dynamic mode. This was my first name using dynamic mode, and dang did it kick my butt! Floorwork focused mainly on upper body but we incorporated some abs in there too. For the rowing machine, we would mix abs and triceps in between rowing sets. We went through each station three times in the 45 minute workout. Matt played a fun mix of music and did an amazing job keeping everyone hyped up and encouraged during the workout! I really like the team environment of a group fitness class, and having an instructor encouraging me really made me push myself more than I typically would just going to the gym solo. I had so much fun at Studio Three, and it made me want to give the cycling and yoga classes a try as well! Thank you Matt for a fantastic experience for this newbie.

Get that ass on the Megaformer bandwagon!…read more Seriously, my abs have never looked better. For those who don't know, a Megaformer is pretty much a pilates reformer on steroids. So, if you feel like you're not getting enough of a workout in your pilates class and would like to bump it up a notch, this place is perfect for you. The Megaformer offers a numbered, much larger carriage, and additional padded surfaces at both ends. There's also a number of added handles on the ends opening up a ton of exercise options. I've taken multiple classes here, and while I'm still learning the names of the exercises, the instructors are always around to demo and help. Classes are never boring, and the resistance and exercise intervals are perfect. I'm always wiped out afterwards, and sometimes need to take a spring off during arms, but I've never felt uncomfortable for doing so. Definitely trust in the instructor's cues. It's better to rock their modifications instead of compromising form, risking injury, or literally, just increasing your chances of falling the fuck off. Seriously, if you want those summer abs, get your ass there. Now.

The workout is designed to improve cardio stamina, strength, endurance, toning, and flexibility using deliberate movements set to a tempo. There are a lot of transitions and pulleys and handles and feet placements on the machine, but these features offer a different options for challenging each muscle group. Transition time is 5 seconds, so no stretching or catching your breath! Some movements are slow and steady with micro movements and others are full range of motion. With pumping music and a lot of verbal instruction, it's like Barry's Bootcamp fused with ProPilates. You can count on having shaky muscles afterwards! My instructor, Danny, was hilarious and informative. He offered a quick tutorial of the machine before class began, which was helpful. Once we got moving, he demonstrated technique and gave individual feedback. If you have injuries that limit your activity, skip it. But if you're looking for a no-impact, chiseling 50-minute workout, this is for you! My class had both men and women, so fellas don't be shy! The studio is on the second floor. Buzz the doorbell to be let in and then head upstairs and check in at the receptionist desk. Remove your shoes when you arrive, then store your belongings in open cubbies. There are two gender-neutral bathrooms to change or shower in. The studio is spacious, with some tall windows on the north side that let in light. There's about a dozen megaformers in the studio, so the class is somewhat intimate. Don't forget sticky socks!

We've both been on an exercise kick recently and she ensured me that Sproing was an excellent workout. During the first of my two workouts of the weekend, I found myself trying to adjust to the machine. It's a cross between a treadmill and a mattress. While the floor of the machine took a little getting used to, I was also facing backwards and strapped in, which made the whole thing a little odd at first. We sprinted, worked our core, did pushups, and used weights. It was a good, high impact workout that centered around interval training. Once I had a feel for the place, my second workout was even better. Cullen was an awesome instructor and he really kept us motivated, encouraging us to push ourselves until the last second. We could see if we were heeding to his advice by watching the big screens in the studio that showed us in real time how we were doing, based on our heart rate monitors. I got a great sweat in over that weekend thanks to the instructors and I found the desk staff to be very welcoming and helpful. The space is clean and new, the bathrooms are spotless and very "homey", and the equipment is sanitized regularly. This is a unique workout for sure and it can be tailored to your fitness level. Try it out if you have time.

Filled with enthusiasm and energy, the sproing fitness instructor definitely motivated each and every one of us to work hard and push ourselves to get the most out of the workout. A heart rate monitor will be attached to an elastic band that you strap around your waist. There is a screen that shows how each individual's % max heart rate which essentially shows how hard you're working out. You are attached to the sproing machine with a Velcro strap that you wrap around your waist and you do exercises on a soft, cushioned surface. The idea of sproing is to do running based high intensity interval training (HIIT) - 20 seconds of work intervals with 10 seconds of rest intervals. Each class is 45 minutes where it's 30 minutes of HIIT. At the end of the class, you get emailed a summary of your workout results which shows how many calories you burned. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Sure, it may feel like your body will give up on you and you'll feel really sore after..but it hurts so good. With an incredible staff + intense but fun workout, I highly, highly recommend sproing fitness!

This is the most difficult review I've ever written for Yelp because I honestly love the idea of…read moreQuads and its history, but after a trial week, I ran back to my pathetic Planet Fitness. For years, I walked by and looked in the window just to see if some of the vibe would entice me to walk in and get energized by all the real-life Marvel Superheroes working out. And I'm glad for the week of experience I had because Quads has some of the nicest, knowledgeable, and dedicated fitness people I've ever met. From the moment I walked in to my final exit, the desk staff, the family members who run it, trainers I encountered, and a few guys who could deadlift car engines whom I asked questions how to use this or that, I felt a lot of compassion for me being the new guy in a sea of bewildering equipment that could either change my fitness life or scare me away. Bear in mind that I truly love Quads but coming from a lengthy history of memberships at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, Gorilla Sports, YMCA, Holmes Place, Chicago Athletic Clubs, and Planet Fitness (with visits to FFC, Crunch, East Bank Club, Cheetah, Life Time, Bally's, and Midtown Athletic Club), I have to do a pro and con thing. Pros It's a good environment to watch others doing astonishing calisthenic exercises and massive lifts and squats. I'll never get to that level, but it's an inspiring place to get jazzed about your own routine. Quads has a diverse membership. You'll see everything from people doing their daily treadmill to pro bodybuilders doing four-hour circuits. I saw every kind of body type and age group. People doing rehab exercises and a person with a visual impairment. The specialty here is bodybuilding, though everyone is welcome. You'll hear grunts, fits of anger, yelling of encouragement, the rage of accomplishment, and claps of high-five. I felt like I was in a place where great bodies are refined. The membership prices are fantastic for the amount of equipment you're offered, and the hours are comparable to other gyms. They offer a few additional membership discounts not listed on the website, so go in and talk with them. Kudos to a gym that finally understands the right way memberships should work--upfront and no hassles. You are constantly reminded of your potential. There are photos and awards everywhere of past and present bodybuilders and pro and amateur athletes, and you can't help but soak up some of that greatness. You're in a place where celebrities have trained, too. Cons Here's where I have to be brutally honest. I may not know the difference between an Iso-Lateral Front Lat Pulldown and an Iso-Lateral Wide Pulldown, but I do know when machines are so old that they need to be replaced. If a machine's pads are worn, replace them. If a Selectorized's weight stack has half its weight labels missing, that should be fixed asap. If a machine's so old that the frame's been painted a number of times, it's probably a good time to replace it. I'm going to guess most of the equipment is older than the members. Sure, old-school machines can be great, and a lot of bodybuilders want them, but at some point, you need to replace them. Hammer Strength, Precor, and Cybex are constantly evolving the science of ergonomics, body mechanics, and safety. Please, Quads. Get new equipment. I didn't see any dumbbells less than 10#. That's not a bad thing, but small weight dumbbells would be great for people doing rehab or weaklings like me starting back at doing simple free weight exercises. In fairness, Planet Fitness dumbbells start at 10#, too. Other reviews are correct: A lot of the equipment, especially the Selectorized machines on the first floor, are squished so closely that safety could be an issue. There are a few machines so close together that parts could touch if used in full range of motion. If you're used to a defined circuit from a previous gym--especially if most of your workout is using Selectorized equipment--you might have difficulties matching it to the machines here. Plate-loaded and cables, no problem; they'll have one of anything you'll ever want. But for Selectorized, nothing made sense because a lot of what I needed was spread throughout the gym on both floors and in hard to find areas (e.g. the pec fly/rear delt machine was in a dimly lit corner, and most of the weights in the stack had no labels). I won't go into cleanliness. Suffice it to say this is a well-worn gym. The rusty lockers and second floor smell attest to the longevity of Quads, for better or worse. Overall, you should try Quads for a week to see if you like it. Most people swear this is the best gym. No, Quads doesn't have a pool, a sauna, towel service, group fitness classes, fancy self-locking lockers, a three-story climbing wall, or sleep rooms. They offer a world of fitness possibilities in an old school gym where amazing happens.
