I figured it's busy and I was a bit worried when the front desk said our waiter hadn't arrived yet for their shift but as it turned out half the group was late for our reservation. Restaurant was clean, lively, DJ playing music--food was excellent and since we were there during happy hour-also inexpensive! Birria tacos were on point and we splurged for icy margaritas. The response I got was an email regurgitating almost the exact same response to my yelp review lol. I'm moving my star level down to one star because of the lackluster response after a poor experience at their restaurant. It's so disingenuous to say you're gonna make something right and then just regurgitate the same boiler plate response. For a place that looked so cool, this was a bust! The food lacked depth, spice, and complexity. Zero flavor and spice to cater to a white American palate rather than traditional or vibrant Mexican cooking. The pomegranate in the guacamole did not complement the dish and distracted from what should have been a simple, well balanced staple. The tableside guacamole presentation also felt unnecessary for a casual dining setting and did not add meaningful value to the experience. For the price, the quality and execution of the food did not meet expectations. The highlight of the visit was the drinks though. Only reason this gets 2 starts lol The margaritas were delicious, and the Mexican lollipop style cocktail was sweet and spicy and tangy. I would have been much more satisfied visiting strictly for beverages! Service was adequate but unremarkable, and the ambience leaned toward kitsch. Came here with my family and ordered the birria torta, while my wife got the trio enchiladas. Overall, the food was pretty mediocre and nothing really stood out. The birria lacked flavor and was dry, the bun was soggy, and the birria fries weren't crispy and were overly seasoned with an unpleasant smoky pepper flavor. The enchiladas didn't have much meat, and what little there was was dry. The sauces on them weren't great either. The ambiance is really nice, and with some tweaks to the food this place could be great. I don't mind spending around $50 for two plates if the food feels worth it, but this just didn't hit. 3 stars for customer service, otherwise food is good! Went in for restaurant week on a Sunday afternoon and had a couple of issues not receiving items listed on the restaurant week menu. The server resolved the issues for the most part, but the kitchen manager was very defensive and made a lot of excuses. This ruined our experience overall. First, we realized the side of refried beans was not brought out with our food, nor did our server realize it should have been included. Then, our dessert churros on the restaurant week menu were supposed to be chocolate filled with pecans, cajeta and strawberries but we were given plain caramel churros and was told they are out of strawberries. This is only day 3 of Restaurant Week and they're already off to a bad start! I really enjoyed my lunch here today. The chips came out hot and fresh and I loved the thickness. Each and every crunchy bite was very satisfying! Since I love spiciness, our server brought us an additional spicy salsa too. I ordered a couple of quesabirria tacos and they were pretty tasty. The consommé was so flavorful that I drank every bit of it. I could have easily drank a bowl of it. It was that good! Their house margarita is generous in size and very good too. While they don't have a lunch menu, they have amazing daily specials Monday - Thursdays all day and happy hour Monday - Fridays 3-6pm. Because today was BOGO tacos, my tacos were 1/2 off which is a great deal. Their $10 house margarita is very solid but during happy hour, it's 1/2 off too which is pretty amazing. My most recent visit to Barrio Queen was fine, but nothing extraordinary. I ordered three of their tacos - the fish, the chicken, and the birria taco. The food was average this time around, and while the service was decent, it didn't really stand out. First visit to Barrio Queen in downtown Gilbert -- thought it was closed at first since the patio was empty... had it all to ourselves for a while! Chill vibe, smaller patio than the Tempe location, and since it's right next to the street, it could probably use a more frequent hosing down. Super friendly service, and no rush at all, which made it easy to kick back and catch up with friends. We hit happy hour and had tacos and a quesadilla -- both were legit. The margarita + sangria which didn't disappoint either. It's right in the heart of downtown Gilbert, so give yourself a little extra time to walk from the plentiful parking. We'll definitely be back! Great location in the heart of downtown Gilbert. Plenty of seating both inside and on the patio. Bar seating as well. I would recommend the patio to enjoy some people watching and the nice weather! Came in on a Saturday night without a reservation and got seated pretty quick. They do have a DJ out on the patio which gave it a fun vibe. Nice sized menu overall with a good variety of dishes. I tried their Barrio Pollo Burrito - delicious! Decent size too. Ordered a classic margherita to pair with it. Very well made. They do have some seasonal dishes they offer which I thought was unique. So disappointing. This was -- past tense -- our favorite Mexican restaurant. Not this time. The Barrio Guacamole is usually prepared table side but the tables were too close together to see the presentation. It was very salty & contained about one avocado. Small portion for four people for $14. I really like mole sauce but this Black Mole Enchiladas was very sweet & thick with no notes of spice nor chocolate. Three family members in our party. It was approx 7 pm Friday night. Michelle was our server. It didn't go well. After 10 minutes of waiting for Michelle to take our drink order. My wife daughter got there drinks. I'm looking at Michelle, because I ordered soda water. It never came. The food came 20 minutes later. No silverware no napkins. We wait another 5 for utensils. They really took the time to have authentic pieces throughout and their store has some really beautiful items for purchase. We used to really love Barrio Queen. We took our out of town family tonight and they get better Mexican food in South Dakota! Our server was wonderful! As always the location and decor was great. Our waiter was not very attentive and we had to wave them down a few times for assistance. But the worst was the food! EVERYTHING was extremely salty. I would not be surprised if the management told us there was a disgruntled employee in the kitchen who decided to ruin the orders. When we reported the horrible taste to our server he talked to his manager and they gave us a discount. So I guess that was nice. Although I would have preferred and edible meal. Stopped in for lunch today with some coworkers. We were there right when they opened at 11 and were seated right away (actually we were the first customers). Service was good. We each ordered something different, enchiladas, quesadillas, Elote, chimichanga, and guacamole. Everything was good, but one person said the quesadilla was too salty for them. We had dinner at the bar and had the worst service you had a special on margaritas and I had one and I wanted a couple more and the bartender saw my empty glass and didn't even offer me another one. Nobody at the bar got chips. I don't know what happened, but the bartender was waiting tables and helping the bar we've been there several times you are one of our favorite places and we had the worst service. Our ticket was $95 and I don't think we're ever gonna go again very disappointed. read more

Went there on a Wednesday night. Place wasn't crowded but unfortunately they only had one waitress to serve both inside and outside which caused long delays in ordering and receiving food. I came in during Cinco de Mayo and the wait wasn't too bad considering the holiday. The inside is huge and decorated cute, the staff are kind and did well despite how busy they were, but that's about all I can positively say for the place. The food was bland, unauthentic, and the smallest portions imaginable for the price. The guacamole is made table side with pomegranate seeds (so I guess you can call it unique) but the portion is tiny, the avocado wasn't mashed all the way, and it was completely underripe. The "elote" corn app was tiny, seemed like it came right out of the can (liquid included) and had NO flavor. The birria tacos had maybe 1 oz of meat on them, and the side of consommé was in a literal 1 oz sauce dish that you'd get ketchup in. Like I was gonna dip my taco in that?? The margaritas were cheap but had no tequila and each one I ordered came out different than the last. The only good food was the chips and salsa and my friend's steak fajitas which was a somewhat normal portion and actually seasoned appropriately. I have been here to this location twice. First time--good experience and service. This time--terrible customer service. We made a 7pm reservation and I believe they were short staffed because we were ignored for 15 mins. Finally sat after 7:15. The salsa had no flavor and the guacamole apparently was made to order at the table but there was no show and the flavor was underwhelming. We came in excited to spend a festive night in Gilbert and ordered two Tamale plates from the holiday menu. Unfortunately, both of us were very disappointed. The tamales were tough, chewy, and nearly impossible to finish. For the price we paid, this was not the quality we expected. The service itself was fine, but eating out is expensive these days. When a meal is this unsatisfying, it feels wrong to be obligated to leave a 20% tip on top of the bill. Went here for lunch with my Mom for the first time. Our waiter was super helpful and encouraged us to order the table side guacamole. I am so glad we ordered it because it did not disappoint. First time visiting this place, but I'm not sure I'd go back. I went on a Saturday night around 5:30p with my wife. Inside seating was a 30 min wait. However, the bar was open seating, so we sat there. Immediately upon seating, we were helped, and we started off with 2 margaritas, elote ribs, and a chicken quesadilla. The margaritas were delicious. However, I can't say the same for the quesadillas. While it was on $5 since it was on happy hour, it may be just because of that that it was lack luster. There was hardly any chicken inside, and it when I did get a piece of chicken, it was bland. The elote ribs were okay, but the odd thing was that all of the ingredients were on the inside on the rib part that you don't eat, not the corn pieces themselves. On to the food. My wife ordered a barría, carne asada, and fish taco. She got a shrimp taco and a fish taco. We told the bartender, and it was fixed about 6 mins later. The barría taco was the best out of all of them. The carne was not seasoned at all, the shrimp was not too bad, and the fish taco was fried a bit too hard. I ordered the carne asada burrito, which comes with a side of rice and beans, that was forgotten, but fixed about 5 mins later. I would not call it a carne asada burrito. I'd call it a black bean burrito with a little bit of unseasoned carne inside (you get 10xs more carne at your local ****ertos fast food for $2 less); the rice a beans were okay. In summary, all the food lacked seasoning. The ambiance was lively, though. It's a smaller venue with your typical semi upscale decorations. read more

I had made a reservation for 6 people at 7 pm. In my reservation, I requested a specific outside table. When all 6 people in my party arrived at 6:50, I was told that someone else had reserved that table for 8 pm. I stated my party was all present and we would be done by 8, yet they still said no! Justin was the Manager who made this decision, and yet never even came to address this issue with us in person; he sent a young girl over to inform us. We begrudgingly sat inside. Now, for the food: my wife and friend ordered tamales, and we were told they had just enough left for their order. Mind you, it is 7 pm on a Friday, and this is a Mexican restaurant. About 20 mins later, they came out and said they had run out of tamales. My wife switched to an alternate dish and asked how it was prepared, but it came out totally different than as described. When almost done eating, I walked over to the originally requested table, and it was still vacant. I would say the restaurant was 25% full (if that) on a Friday night. After all these issues, I can now understand why it is so barren in the heart of downtown Gilbert. I will say the drinks and salsa were tasty, and our server was amazing, but that is the extent of my praise. As a Manager, I would have liked Justin to at least advise us in person of the situation. I will not say that I will never be back, but my impression of Barrio Queen has gone down substantially, and I will not suggest it to anyone from out of town as I once did. read more

Barrio queen is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. At this point I've considered myself a regular! From their variety of tacos, delicious drink menu, to their chips and salsa you can always taste the quality. I am a fan of ordering the nachos chingones which has melty Oaxaca cheese, savory Chile verde and flavorful pico de gallo. I always get a half order for myself and finish it no problem. MY FAVORITE! Next I love to order the tacos because there are so many different kinds you will not be disappointed. Personally I love the fried fish and shrimp the most. And the quesabirria. Honestly all of them are incredible but those will always have my heart. Carne asada, barrio pollo, cochinita pibil, chorizo, carnitas. ALL of them. Always get a side of salsa to drown them in. For my drinks I am in love with the "who's your daddy and the Diablo" love me a spicy drink. Micheladas are amazing too or for a non alcoholic drink I love the horchata. Tonight was the worst quality food I have ever had at Barrio Queen. Carne asada was over cooked the avocado was not ripe and the rice given to us as a side was equivalent to cauliflower rice quality. When we brought up the concern with our server she said she would bring the manager and instead she just came back with the bill. I do not recall the server name but she was a taller slimmer lady with a voice that sounded she was from Los Angeles. We used to love coming here but we won't come here again. read more

We had made a reservation for a party of 10 people including specific note of needing wheelchair accessible table and high chair for a baby. When we arrived our table was set at bar height. ‍‍‍ The receptionist said they would reset us on the patio, which they did. Our server, Esmeralda, did her best but obviously too busy to check back with us very often. She made it a point to tell us more than once how many customers they were serving while we were there. I'Saturday and you're not staffed? Not our issue and very unprofessional. We had bar drinks that weren't delivered, repeatedly. At one point a member of our party went in the bar to get a drink that hadn't been delivered and found all three of the bar tenders just chatting with each other, not making drinks despite us waiting for still waiting for one. ‍ Our food took a long time and arrived cold. My fish tacos were cold and completely drowned in sauce. Sigh. Our server never came to ask how the food was and we had already waited so long we just ate. It made the meal even more unenjoyable because It's summertime in Arizona and it was probably 90 degrees in the restaurant. They were being cheap with the AC it seemed. Barrio Queen was able to accommodate our group of 6 with no problem in one of their big booths. There wasn't much of a crowd at all at 2:30 on the holiday weekend. Tacos and nachos for everyone. The 1/2 order of nachos was bigger than you'd expect. We think it had pork on it, but not sure of the meat. I would recommend the shrimp tacos over the grilled fish for flavor. The shrimp was delicious. I would recommend that they include a lime to squeeze over the fish to enhance the flavor. The service was amazing! read more
