When you just need to crush a burrito this place delivers. We had a day - hiking outside of Tucson on a trek beyond our skill set, paired with getting stuck on the highway behind an accident. You know that kind of day. You get back in town and most places are closed, but not backyard taco! Ordered an Al pastor burrito, my boyfriend got three tacos, followed by a second order of an Al pastor quesadilla. (I think he was jealous of my burrito ordering genius in this moment). This place is one of the best in the East Valley. Starting with that Mesquite charcoal flavor that they grill with. You really can't go wrong with any meat that they serve, but the Carne Asada is my favorite. You have to try the crazy potato. It's just like a perfect baked potato filled with Carne Asada. I ate at Backyard Taco on south Gilbert Rd for the first time today. I ordered 2 tacos rice and beans. Beans were good. Rice was okay but needs more seasoning. The hot sauce was awesome. Sadly, the tacos were very disappointing. I ordered carne asada. It was 2:00 pm. The meat tasted like shoe leather. Extremely dry and tough like it had been under a lamp all last week and put out again today. This is supposed to be the star of the dish and was awful. So we came here late last night! They were surprisingly busy which is always a good sign. The staff was super organized, we had never been to the guy who assisted us had some excellent recommendations. We went with the chicken tacos and the steak tacos with a side of chips and salsa. It's super clean inside and they have an amazing open bar area to grab pico, salsas etc. The overall price seemed reasonable as I ended up grabbing the bowl with the carne asada. The amount of meat was decent but the toppings were really good and fresh. The beef itself tasted good and didn't seem overcooked at all. I did go to the salsa and guacamole bar area several times as they included great chips (unlimited with what we ordered). Overall, I'd highly recommend trying this place out! read more

I actually love this place a lot. I've been to a couple locations and BOTH had wonderful integration between indoor and outdoor seating which take advantage of our beautiful weather. The lighting is lovely and makes this place a great evening dining spot to enjoy Arizonas warm nights with a comfortable, casual atmosphere. The food is good as it comes but it is what you make it and the taco bar makes it very easy to customize to your taste. Quite possibly the best birria taco I've had! The carne asada was just ok. I would 100% return for the birria taco. They have a huge salsa bar with tons of salsas, cucumbers, limes and radishes. Highly recommend getting a bag of chips to munch on as well. Very good and we will be back! read more

Good place for tacos and it was near our home. When we came here on 6/30/21, there was no cars in the drive thru. We ordered 4 carne asada tacos ($2.90), 2 al pastor ($2.65), and 2 pollo ($2.65). It was made pretty quickly and we were on our way. The tacos all tasted delicious to me and we definitely ordered the right amount since it hit the spot. There were other things on the menu like burritos that I wanted to try on the menu. We came at a later date to try the carne asada burritos and those were delicious. A new taco place (new to me) that I'll be visiting as much as possible! Got turned onto this restaurant thru a local PBS show called Check Please. Their review of this place was spot on. When I walked in I stood back to view the menu and the Mgr/Owner approached asking if it was my first time and how I came by them. He told me that episode was filmed in their location and then covered the entire menu with me explaining the different meats and items you could have the meat in. They have 4 choices of meat: Carne Asada, Birria, Al Pastor and chicken. The way he described how the birria was cooked made me want to try it (I don't eat beef and wanted it). The first 2 are beef, Al Pastor is made from pork. I have had Al Pastor in Mexico many times and once at a Latin festival in Phoenix and absolutely love it because of the chili seasoning and pineapple marinade. You can have your meat come in a choice between tacos, burrito, tostada, Gordita, quesadilla, bowl or my choice the crazy potato. Currently they don't have rice for their bowl dish however, just that day he was trying different cooked rice recipes for an addition to it. After you get your order their is a salsa bar and an assortment of pickled veggies to compliment your meal. In the crazy potato they top it first with sour cream and cheese. Only disappointment was a lot of the cheese ended up on the side of the foil surrounding the bowl. The especially nice part is the potato is already chunked up for you so you can get potato with every bite! The Al Pastor rivaled what I had in Mexico. It was tender and flavorful. You get plenty of meat to satisfy. After eating the crazy potato and horchata I left satiated and happy. The manager came back later and asked how I liked my dish. Really enjoyed the friendliness of him and everyone who worked their. They know the meaning of customer service. The restaurant was spotless. As soon as someone left a person came out and wiped down their table. Oh something else that impressed me the modern dispensers for your napkins and utensils. A machine gave you exactly 2 napkins (usual amount needed for one person) and the utensil dispenser gave you exactly 1 fork or knife. Why was I impressed by this? It was sanitary and reduced unnecessary waste! How many times have you pulled the lever of other machines and gotten 2 forks that fall out on the counter? People always take more napkins than they need and they end up thrown out after their meal. Keep up the good work Backyard Tacos you have a diehard fan that will be back to try more on your menu!
