As the scorching summer sun sets over Santiago, most local dwellers start to search for a patio and…read morewell, a place to get some beverages that can soothe the long day and cool down the body. After a recommendation from Camilo at the Ritz, decided to pay a visit here. The spot is actually owned by one of the former employees from the Ritz and it's been fortunate to meet the owner here. Aside from the wonderful patio with mountain views , what I loved here is the level of knowledge in the staff. Our waiter not only knew the wines, but also had a story for each of the cheeses served. It was such a neat conversation. They do have a selection of wines by glass, so for tasting purposes, this is a good spot to come. I do wish there were more wines by the glass to try, particularly on the higher end of Chilean and Argentinian wines. Bottles are much more plentiful of course. All around, a perfect spot to spend an evening.

Nowadays, we're not so lucky, but the service, wines, and cheese are still amazing (fingers crossed all those regular things return soon!). The great somms here have worked all over the world, from France to Napa Valley. They speak every language and they are actually nice people, not snobby at all. (They might jokingly roll their eyes at you if you go from a big bold cab to a pinot noir, though!) Admittedly, I have only come for cheese, charcuterie plates, or dinner--never lunch, but I've heard good things. The cheese plates are terrific and always different (it's like the TJ Maxx of cheese boards!). The apps are also nice. There's not a huge selection for dinner plates (duck, beef, or chicken are pretty much it), but the chef is consistent. If you've lived in Chile longer than a year and still love Chilean wine but want to mix it up now and then with nice French wines, THIS is the spot for you. After spending a wonderful weekend trip in Medoc running the famed marathon, I'm now a huge fan (who isn't?) and occasionally want to enjoy those European flavors. In addition to the incredible French-wine selection, LDV also carries some of the best Chilean wines, including those from Vik vineyard. But the real reason I keep coming back is that delicious French cheese! Do you know there are cheese smugglers in Canada? Yeah, people risking their lives and freedom to smuggle in every kind of expensive French cheese imaginable. Well, good news cheese lovers of Chile, you need not risk jail time here. Truthfully, there is not a bad cheese behind the counter, and more often than not, they are on sale. What's not to love? You just walk in, straight back to the counter and ask for your favorite cheese in whatever size you like. They'll wrap it carefully and with a smile. Oh, and did I mention they deliver? Same day! Before 2020, the hubs and I came to LDV one afternoon just as the sun was setting in front of our indoor window seat. It was so incredibly hot, it was like a greenhouse. My first thought was, They are cooking all this wine! Well, fast forward to 2021, and there are now wine crates in those windows and only outdoor seating (I can also confirm they are dog friendly!). I still am not brave enough to sample the wines closest to the window, but I'll admit, I've never had a bad wine here. One thing I will note: On more than one occasion, my foreign credit card has not worked immediately (works fine with the online shop). Not sure if it's a wifi or machine issue or what, but I've come to expect hiccups when paying my bill. A minor inconvenience for great service and a happy belly.

We arrived a bit early for dinner (after 7, but before 8 is early) but were greeted with gusto and the wine list. I'd been wanting to check this place out because who doesn't love a restaurant in which an entire four-story wall is just wine?! The wine list didn't disappoint. I had a glass of Syrah, which was divine (by dessert, I was tempted to go for a second, but opted for decaf coffee instead). We perused the menu for a long while. I will definitely be bringing friends and family here when they visit--everything looked amazing. You can even order a charcuterie tray of just meat, just cheese, or a combo. Doesn't that sound perfect with a bottle of vino?? Other group-dining options include a seafood platter consisting of oysters and crab...Yum! The hubs and I weren't super hungry, so we skipped the appetizers and went straight for the main course, though I will be back for the appetizers soon. I asked the waiter if he recommended the mushroom risotto or the fish of the day. He said if I like salmon, then the fish hands down. I love salmon, so that was easy. The hubs, as usual, went for the steak. At first he was leaning toward a dish that had steak and veggies, but the waiter said that was too bland and recommended the filet with foie gras. We also ordered a side of mushrooms. Everything arrived quickly and perfectly. I was most surprised at the level of seasoning in my dish--the butter sauce was great and even had plenty of salt to boot. The fish came with potatoes (the usual staple around here) that were not overcooked but were still soft enough to slice with a fork, though I might have preferred some green veggie instead. We both cleaned our plates and thought we might go for a stroll to get ice cream down the street. But then our waiter cleared our table and offered us the dessert menu. Why not? Everything looked incredible. The hubs was leaning toward flan but opted for the tiramisu at the behest of the waiter. I couldn't turn down the berries with merengue and vanilla ice cream. It was perfect! I think I could eat here every day, seriously. So many delicious menu options and so much wine! I'm not sure how it is for the English-speaking crowd, but I would guess they have at least one server on staff who could translate for you. Most of the menu is pretty easy to figure out, though! Enjoy!

I had a seared tuna salad which came with lentils and palta (avocado). The tuna was done nice and it served well but it was lacking any taste, it did come with a tiny shallow dish of dressing but it wasn't enough to flavor the salad. Portion was large, although some of my table mates ordered other dishes and I thought they were pretty measly (the coq o vin was tiny). Service was good and booze was very strong. 1 mojito nearly knocked me out. Decor is very "W Hotel" style indeed. Overall decent place but I wouldn't return for the food alone.
