Bistro Km 0 - Incredible dessert! Berries, merengue, and vanilla ice cream with small decaf coffee

Everything about the dinner service at Bistro Km0 was fabulous. I've found seasoning, particularly…read moresalt, can be lacking in Chilean dishes (which could explain the joke that you can easily spot a Chilean because he will always salt his food before tasting it, haha), but that was not the case on this particular evening. We arrived a bit early for dinner (after 7, but before 8 is early) but were greeted with gusto and the wine list. I'd been wanting to check this place out because who doesn't love a restaurant in which an entire four-story wall is just wine?! The wine list didn't disappoint. I had a glass of Syrah, which was divine (by dessert, I was tempted to go for a second, but opted for decaf coffee instead). We perused the menu for a long while. I will definitely be bringing friends and family here when they visit--everything looked amazing. You can even order a charcuterie tray of just meat, just cheese, or a combo. Doesn't that sound perfect with a bottle of vino?? Other group-dining options include a seafood platter consisting of oysters and crab...Yum! The hubs and I weren't super hungry, so we skipped the appetizers and went straight for the main course, though I will be back for the appetizers soon. I asked the waiter if he recommended the mushroom risotto or the fish of the day. He said if I like salmon, then the fish hands down. I love salmon, so that was easy. The hubs, as usual, went for the steak. At first he was leaning toward a dish that had steak and veggies, but the waiter said that was too bland and recommended the filet with foie gras. We also ordered a side of mushrooms. Everything arrived quickly and perfectly. I was most surprised at the level of seasoning in my dish--the butter sauce was great and even had plenty of salt to boot. The fish came with potatoes (the usual staple around here) that were not overcooked but were still soft enough to slice with a fork, though I might have preferred some green veggie instead. We both cleaned our plates and thought we might go for a stroll to get ice cream down the street. But then our waiter cleared our table and offered us the dessert menu. Why not? Everything looked incredible. The hubs was leaning toward flan but opted for the tiramisu at the behest of the waiter. I couldn't turn down the berries with merengue and vanilla ice cream. It was perfect! I think I could eat here every day, seriously. So many delicious menu options and so much wine! I'm not sure how it is for the English-speaking crowd, but I would guess they have at least one server on staff who could translate for you. Most of the menu is pretty easy to figure out, though! Enjoy!

I had a seared tuna salad which came with lentils and palta (avocado). The tuna was done nice and it served well but it was lacking any taste, it did come with a tiny shallow dish of dressing but it wasn't enough to flavor the salad. Portion was large, although some of my table mates ordered other dishes and I thought they were pretty measly (the coq o vin was tiny). Service was good and booze was very strong. 1 mojito nearly knocked me out. Decor is very "W Hotel" style indeed. Overall decent place but I wouldn't return for the food alone.

After a recommendation from Camilo at the Ritz, decided to pay a visit here. The spot is actually owned by one of the former employees from the Ritz and it's been fortunate to meet the owner here. Aside from the wonderful patio with mountain views , what I loved here is the level of knowledge in the staff. Our waiter not only knew the wines, but also had a story for each of the cheeses served. It was such a neat conversation. They do have a selection of wines by glass, so for tasting purposes, this is a good spot to come. I do wish there were more wines by the glass to try, particularly on the higher end of Chilean and Argentinian wines. Bottles are much more plentiful of course. All around, a perfect spot to spend an evening.

Nowadays, we're not so lucky, but the service, wines, and cheese are still amazing (fingers crossed all those regular things return soon!). The great somms here have worked all over the world, from France to Napa Valley. They speak every language and they are actually nice people, not snobby at all. (They might jokingly roll their eyes at you if you go from a big bold cab to a pinot noir, though!) Admittedly, I have only come for cheese, charcuterie plates, or dinner--never lunch, but I've heard good things. The cheese plates are terrific and always different (it's like the TJ Maxx of cheese boards!). The apps are also nice. There's not a huge selection for dinner plates (duck, beef, or chicken are pretty much it), but the chef is consistent. If you've lived in Chile longer than a year and still love Chilean wine but want to mix it up now and then with nice French wines, THIS is the spot for you. After spending a wonderful weekend trip in Medoc running the famed marathon, I'm now a huge fan (who isn't?) and occasionally want to enjoy those European flavors. In addition to the incredible French-wine selection, LDV also carries some of the best Chilean wines, including those from Vik vineyard. But the real reason I keep coming back is that delicious French cheese! Do you know there are cheese smugglers in Canada? Yeah, people risking their lives and freedom to smuggle in every kind of expensive French cheese imaginable. Well, good news cheese lovers of Chile, you need not risk jail time here. Truthfully, there is not a bad cheese behind the counter, and more often than not, they are on sale. What's not to love? You just walk in, straight back to the counter and ask for your favorite cheese in whatever size you like. They'll wrap it carefully and with a smile. Oh, and did I mention they deliver? Same day! Before 2020, the hubs and I came to LDV one afternoon just as the sun was setting in front of our indoor window seat. It was so incredibly hot, it was like a greenhouse. My first thought was, They are cooking all this wine! Well, fast forward to 2021, and there are now wine crates in those windows and only outdoor seating (I can also confirm they are dog friendly!). I still am not brave enough to sample the wines closest to the window, but I'll admit, I've never had a bad wine here. One thing I will note: On more than one occasion, my foreign credit card has not worked immediately (works fine with the online shop). Not sure if it's a wifi or machine issue or what, but I've come to expect hiccups when paying my bill. A minor inconvenience for great service and a happy belly.

Before arriving I thought I was lost because I could not understand how that would be a winery in the middle of the city, but it was, and it is really beautiful. The staff here was so sweet and I tasted some really really good wines at a fraction of the cost of those in California. I'm talking $10-$20 bottles that are absolutely fantastic. There's almost 150 years of history behind this place, and the facilities and wines show that. What made my visit even more enjoyable was doing it through La Biciclete Verde (https://labicicletaverde.com/tour/bike-wine-tour-cousino-macul-vineyard/), which pairs a tour of the winery with a bike tour of the vineyards, including a tasting under the trees and a tasting after the tour. Wines: I loved the Sauvignon Gris, which I'd never tried before. It tasted like a crisper and even less sweet Sauv. Blanc. I really enjoyed the Chardonnay, which is unusual for me. I found the Syrah to be very good. But my favorite was the Lota red blend, which I had an opportunity to try in their wine bar, and absolutely worth the ~$15 for a glass (the bottles retail for about $80). Facilities: With that 150 years of history, there are buildings here that have survived from day one, severe Chilean earthquakes notwithstanding. The wines aren't aged in the original cellars anymore due to a mold that's taken hold in them, but because of Chile's antiquities laws, all of the original fermentation vessels remain, as well as endless rows of barrels down in the dungeons. There's an impressive combination of the new (modern PLC-controlled stainless steel processing equipment) on grounds hosting some 80+ year old vines that are still watered by redirected streams from the Andes. The People: Our guide Adriane was very informative and gave the tour in a Spanish that I could completely understand (the Chilean dialect can be difficult to those of us so used to the Mexican variety). The wine bar staff were very helpful in answering additional questions, and of course, providing that lovely, decanted Lota red. Getting There: An easy 30 min Metro ride from greater central Santiago, followed by a ~$5 cab ride, which is even cheaper if you get off at the right stop. And for leaving, an employee was giving ~$1.50 rides back to the Metro in her Chrysler minivan.
