We were in Oxnard and asked some locals to recommend a place for Menudo. They recommended Barrera. Its a small place and nothing fancy, but their menudo was delicious! They serve it with these huge homemade corn tortillas the size of a flour tortilla. I purchased the medium size bowl and had to take my leftovers to go. The small bowl just looked too small though. The family and I used to come here often but the last time we were here we asked for a bowl of rice which they said was $3, when we had to pay they were charging us $7. I came back today with my mom and 1. They raised their prices A LOT 2. It took them forever to even acknowledge that we were there and 3. Food was so bad. I Yelped for a 1 dollar sign Mexican restaurant and I found 2 that were right next to each other, they seemed to have pretty similar metrics but I picked this one because it looked a little worse from the outside and, in my view, low care for aesthetics translates to deliciousness when it comes to cheap food. That's the kind of Mexican food customer I am, I've had some of the best food at tiny hole-in-the-wall type of restaurants and I'll keep hunting for the perfect chips and salsa! My first drawback: no chips and salsa. When I came to this country, I discovered the beauty of the free chips and salsa, a standard that should be adopted everywhere in the world, so I didn't loved that, but I was still excited for the prospect of eating cheese enchiladas at this restaurant/bakery. When I got there, all the girls were in the back, no front counter person to talk to, but when she saw me, she came to the front and ask me what I wanted. I asked if they had cheese enchiladas and she said yes (yay!). The menu was one of those wall illustrated posters that I have only seen at legit Mexican restaurants, a good sign! The food came quickly and I asked for a diet coke (I NEVER have Coke, but a long walk and a 4 hour train ride deserved a celebration), they only had regular Coke and I thought to myself "you only live once". They also had only the bigger bottles, so I went all in. There were 3 enchiladas with rice, beans, a small salad and a delicious red sauce on the side. The portion size was good and the flavor was good too, the sauce definitely completed the dish. Unfortunately, I had recently visited Zorro's in Shell Beach and and they ruined my ability to appreciate regular enchiladas, their cheese enchiladas are sooo good! Now that I've been damaged, this place probably got one star less than I would've given it before Zorro's. The rice and beans were just standard and the salad was ok, I always like the small salad on these dishes. The price was fine, but I remember thinking it was more then I expected (that stupid giant Coke!). I struggled really hard not to buy some baked goods, since they had those very old-fashioned Latin American pastries I haven't had in a while, but I resisted. Great little place with some authentic and well-priced dishes! Barrera was recommended by our friends who know the Oxnard restaurant scene well and count it as their favorite Mexican eatery in town. Love the nopal salad (ask about it). The carnitas I ordered were full of flavor and lean. My partner is vegetarian and loved his vegetable enchiladas (full of tasty veggies) and his guarache (you can order the sopes and guaraches grilled instead of fried if you prefer the healthier alternative). All the dishes we've ordered here over the course of a few visits have been flavorful and light. Salas (green and red) are excellent and spicy! Bakery display offers decent variety and looks tasty and fresh. We live in West Ventura and also love Cuernavaca -- and this place is definitely on par. Highly recommend. read more

If you're trying to watch what you eat, There aren't a lot of good Mexican places that have healthy choices and this place has lentil and Ava soup. I've had the veggie quesadillas grilled and fried, they are very tasty. Their alfalfa water is amazing!!! I still haven't been able to make my own like they do here. Their fideo soup is very good as well. Clean place with nice staff. I've also had some of the cookies from their bakery and they are very tasty. One of my friends has the chicharron quesadilla which was not very good, that is why maybe all the bad reviews. I really can't have an opinion about their meat dishes. read more

I ordered the green enchiladas with chicken and cheese. The server took longer to show up with my food than my drink (which was simply a cup of water) half way through eating she had finally remembered I suppose. Maybe if she had checked up on our table more i could have reminded her. So my server was very bad and the enchiladas gave me a stomach ache all through out the day.
