So much nostalgia with this place. I have been coming here since I was a little girl with my mom. This was our bakery for bread. It still is our place for masa however things have changed. My mom has gotten rotten masa twice and had to take it back. We live on the other side of Oxnard and with today's traffic it is annoying. They exchanged with no problem but should do better with how they keep their inventory to ensure freshness. We don't buy bread here anymore. It's not like it used to be. Pretty small and pricey now. It tastes terrible and dry. It's a small bakery and it gets busy. The shop itself is tiny, old school with a few bread displays. My mom still won't buy masa for tamales anywhere else but is always paranoid it will be rotten again. She just can't quit La Central though. To me, it's not the business I grew up with. I am very sad to say, after I've come here for over 50 years and would tell everyone i know to come here, it is no longer the place i loved. I picked up some tamales and pan dulce. The pan dulce is ok but not what it used to be. I don't know if the ingredients are no longer the same quality or they changed owners or bakers but it's just not what it used to be. The last 3-4 times I've gone it just seems to be going down. The tamales are not anywhere near the delicious ones i used to get. The service is ok, disappointed that the last few times when i try to find out what's changed the people act like i don't know what I'm talking about. Ambiance is the same old place with some slight renovation but so little it's not noticeable. I went in today and bought a buñuelo and it was the worst thing i have bitten into! Even though the rumors of the moldy bread are true, the masa has been consistently good for the last 26 years we have been buying it there. There is one exception to this, the sweet "prepared" tamale masa is gross, both the pineapple and the strawberry flavors are just gross. The line for mass around the holidays can get a little long but the staff there do a great job of keeping it moving fast. There have been some cold mornings and once in a while the owners grow a heart and offer warm coffee to the people in those lines. I wish I could give them a higher rating but as a Panaderia, most of their business is based on the bread they sell, and if they can't do that right then it's hard for me to rate them higher. For now, I will keep patronizing them at the very least once a year or when ever we get a craving to make tamales! read more

This bakery is authentic as it gets. The prices are absolutely fair as well as the selections. They also make the best tortillas fresh each day. I always come here for them. Their burritos are great as well! the small eats like these are priced well. Made fresh and quickly. There really isn't a single thing I can think of that's bad about this place. Yes, FRESH tortillas are the attraction here, as well as the voluminous variety of pastries. That's not why I come to this downtown Oxnard bakery though. In its own little corner of the shop there are fresh tamales. You can have those EVERY day (They're open from 5am - 7pm), not just weekends :) There are 4 kinds to choose from: Puerco (pork), Queso (cheese), Pollo (chicken), & Frijoles Negros (black beans). They are $2 each. My favorite is pollo, although it seems that's the least favorite for everyone else, because pollo is the only option left when I come later in the day. They're of average size, but filled with meat and taste delicious. The ladies helping me are always friendly and assist me with my broken Spanish. So I get yummy tamales and free Spanish lessons. I'm alright with that! ASIDE: Shout out to Estela M.!!! She says this place also rocks the MASA (tamale dough). Lines for the masa can be long like a Disneyland ride @ peak masa buying times! I bought a variety of bread today including 3 pumpkin empanadas today. My mom ate her and I split mine in half and guess what I found? Mold! We open the other one and the inside was covered with mold. I can not believe that they cost $2.75 each. Went to inform how much the masa was but why will not be getting my money. The cashier told me the empanadas were made fresh today. But I don't think that amount of mold is created in one day. I sure they refrigerate them at the end of the night if they don't sell. The young woman behind the counter also insulted me since I answered her in English and not Spanish. I really hope my mom does not get sick read more

Fresh, amazing flour tortillas available in multiple sizes. They are excellent and worth the drive. They're made with lard, so you know they're good. On top of that you've got pumpkin empanadas, delicious conchas and other pan dulce to choose from all at great prices. Their tamales are adequate, haven't tried the chicken yet. Great bakery! You will find tons of Mexican baking essentials here. They have freshly baked Mexican bread, masa (dough) for tamales, bolillo (bread) for tortas (for the bread don't use eggs, milk or butter, yay), tortillas, tamales already made etc. My kids were very happy with the bread! They all loved the sweet bread and drinks. They accept debit and credit cards. Go early in the morning for the freshest stuff! I only took off one star because of the prices. This is actually kind of fancy as panaderias go. They've got a pretty large selection with only a few of each displayed in waist-level glass cases that aren't self-serve. The picture on the website is outdated, but the place is still pretty nice by panaderia standards. The items are also pretty sophisticated. I'd gotten a glazed cake donut and a pumpkin empanada. The donut wasn't worth getting -- pretty plain and boring -- but I really didn't expect them to make it well. The empanada, a little more standard for a panaderia item, had a crust that was a little tough but otherwise very good. The filling inside was nicely textured and generally the best part of it. It's probably worth a go if you like panaderias and are in the area, but there are an awful lot of choices out in Oxnard. read more

I come here on a regular basis to grab some conchas and champurrado, which always hits the spot. I've also had tamales, which to my surprise they had during the week. The trick to getting tortillas and bread is to come early in the morning when they have fresh off the press ones in the back. I always just ask to see what they have. They also have tortillas made from nopales! I really like this spot, I wish I could get the bread myself, and wish that they had more to choose from. THIS PLACE IS A GEM! There are a TON of panaderia's (Spanish for Bakery) in little Mexico aka Oxnard. The freshness and consistency of this place is outstanding. They have everything a panaderia should have from A-Z and MUCH MORE. They now sell burritos, tortas, tamales, bread, tortillas, roasted chickens, masa, flan, tres leches, etc etc etc. Everything I have ever tried here I have been beyond satisfied. This place has been here forever it seems (4 or 5 generations?) last I spoke with the owners Carlos Sr. and Carlos Jr. They were the coolest most humble guys ever. You can tell they really appreciate their customers and stand by their products. I will be coming here until the day the good Lord says I cant any more. read more
