The service was awesome, food and drinks were even better. Great burger and duck poutine. We have to go back and have the brie cheese curds-can't wait! read more

The specialty drink menu is great! Our group ordered a few different of their special drinks and we were all pleased. Unique menu and great food! read more

Love the atmosphere! Dark cozy place!!! Sat at the bar, and we had great service. && all the Drinks are unique. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice time read more

First time and definitely won't be the last! We came with a group of 7 tonight and couldn't be any happier with our experience. The decor is impeccable and very detailed! Our group started off with a few appetizers and couldn't find one bad thing except we wish we had enough room in our stomachs to order a second round. The bone marrow was so silky and rich. The artichoke dip was a favorite as well, creamy and very delicious. We also ordered the duck poutine which was the groups favorite! We highly recommend these apps. I ordered the pot roast grilled cheese and the basil tomato shooter on the side was the star of the dish and definitely needed a bowl of that. Everyone loved their entrees and no body could find a complaint about anything (which is very rare) now about the drinks.. which is the main reason we took a drive down here and we love the wide selection of bourbons and rye whiskeys! Their shelves are jam packed with whatever suits your tastebuds. Highly recommend the smoked cedar wood Manhattan.. it was not overwhelming and perfectly concocted. The icing on the cake was our server Stacy who was very attentive and made sure our food and drinks came out on time and perfectly synced. Barrel + Rye keep doing what you are doing because we had an amazing experience and can not wait for our next visit! Xoxo the Dundee crew. P.s you should upgrade the 1 ply toilet paper! read more

Service and ambience from the staff was awful!! We expected to wait since there is no reservations, which was fine. But when we asked to see a drink menu to order drinks while waiting we were given attitude as if we were inconveniencing them. The food was good (awesome Poutine!) but not enough to ever want to go back. The attitude from our server was the same negative attitude from the hostess. I was very disappointed. Heard good things about this restaurant and was looking forward to dining there. But because of the very poor experience I will never return. read more

I enjoy the food and the drinks. However, we had a really bad experience this evening. I called early in the day to try and make a reservation and was informed that they do not take reservations. Instead they do a "call ahead list", I was advised to call 45 minutes to an hour ahead to have my name put on the wait list. I called at 6:30 and informed them that we would arrive at 7:30 for dinner. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were told they were waiting for a couple tables to finish and our wait should be around 25-30 minutes. We decided to go to galena cellars next door and order a wine flight while we waited for our table. 30 minutes went by and we decided to head back to the restaurant to inquire on the status of our reservation. Again we were told it would be approximately 30 minutes. So we decided to get a drink at the bar and wait for our table to be ready. An hour goes by and it is now 90 minutes since we arrived at the restaurant for our scheduled "call ahead" time. Since there was no sign of any tables opening up we decided to make a reservation at Livia and have dinner instead. Overall I feel they could do a better job of managing clients expectations. I feel as if their "call ahead" method does not work and is misleading to the clients. read more

My wife and I recently visited Geneva for the weekend and tried a number of restaurants downtown. Barrel + Rye's pork fried rice small plate was the best thing we ate all weekend. All the food was of great quality and the staff was very friendly. We can't wait to go back and try more! read more

Was taken here on New Year's Eve and had never heard of it before! I had a blast and the drinks were wonderful.

The duck is amazing and the southern chicken sandwich is also very good and highly recommended. I want to try a burger next time though.

Had the duck poutine and the berkshire. First off, the whiskey list is incredible. I was very impressed with their assortment, and their beer on tap was quite impressive as well. I got Lagunitas Olde Barley Wine (delicious) which is 11 percent alcohol as well for $5.50. that is incredibly cheap. Now, the one problem I had was the pricing of the whiskey itself. I felt as though it was very high. For example, I drank my fair share of well whiskey in college. I was surprised to see that they had Ten High whiskey at this place. Not only was I surprised at that, but then I was SHOCKED when it said that it was $10 for a glass. You can buy a whole FIFTH of that stuff for $10. So besides the very high markup on hard liquor, the rest was well priced because it was delicious. will definitely go back in the future. read more

I am a fan...a nice meal and a good beer selection, but one that did trend towards Pale Ales. Friendly service and a decent price. A nice treat every once and a while, but I have a slight preference for "Preservation Food" a few blocks towards the train. I do have to note that the female bartender could have been a model for hipsters...that was pretty cool. read more

Really cool atmosphere - reminds me of Portland with their tasty and original hand crafted cocktails and outdoorsy atmosphere. Also enjoyed the lumber sexual staff members. Anticipate a wait - but it will be worth it. read more

Great addition to Geneva! Perfect bar/foodie place. Chairs outside little uncomfortable but overall awesome!

Love the food and the cocktail lists. The menu is amazing. Definitely order the Brie cheese tots, best cheese tots in town. Although I do wish there were more vegetarian options or at least the ability to switch out items to make it vegetarian, by still a great place none the less! read more

I was here last night -- probably my fifth or sixth visit. Barrel n Rye never disappoints. Atmosphere is cozy, but not tight. There is no better place for brown liquor in the fox valley, and maybe the burbs. House cocktails are very good and the selection of whiskeys is very good. Great tasting food complements the libations. Last night we ordered a plate of their daily homemade pies -- Apple crisp and a chocolate cream. Both were very good -- the Apple was my favorite (and I am a chocolate lover who normally doesn't go for apple pie). read more

Great atmosphere. Wife loves it. I think it's ok. Good food and spirit selection. Portions always seem a bit small to me. I really want to love the place, but after three or four trips can only say that I go because my wife likes it. read more

We tried this place tonight... Due to lack of seating, over an hour wait - we sat inside and it was "so loud" that you had to yell talk to each other, very dim lighting- hard to read the menu - outside seating would be recommended unless you are just for the food and drinks! We had the black & blue burger and Korean BBQ sandwiches - the burger was good but not as good as counterpart (burger local) the Korean BBQ had little kick but was amazing! The fries were perfect crunch and the appetizer of mac & cheese was creamy and delicious. Drinks were another fav- the old fashioned had a twist of orange that had my husband particularly loving it - I rocked a Cider Boys beer - lots of food! We had one of our sons with us- definitely not a kid friendly place inside - no child menu or portion - he had a basic burger and fries but way to large and priced normal - date night place for sure and suggest sitting outside if you actually want to talk to your date. read more

I really like the atmosphere! The cheese plate was also pretty awesome. I think this is a reliable spot for social get togethers but sometimes it seems a little noisy inside. read more

Went there on a rainy Wednesday for lunch. There was literally no where to park for 2 blocks. Doesn't anyone work any longer. Crazy. Place was almost full. Ordered from the menu. Nice options. Friendly server and the manager greeted us as well. I tried a new sandwich and had the house salad as the side. Dishes were nice. Food was plentiful and the side salad was very good. I hate to rate this place above average because I feel it will get even more popular and I will never get in again. It was full on a rainy Wednesday. In any case food was really good. Atmosphere was casual and inviting and over all I highly recommend. read more

A great little restaurant! Love their food and wine!! They also have a friendly staff!

Love it every time I go there. I always get the Duck Poutine and some sort of salad. The poutine is always great as well as the salads. The sizes are large and can serve several people. Great service. read more

Cool setting and we snagged a table fairly quickly, but that's about it. The food and drink menu is really lacking. Not my taste at all. Really wish they would offer some "normal" menu items at least as some sides! read more

Full disclosure that I work here as of recently. But the food and drinks are phenomenal. If you don't know what to get, get the southern. The seasonal drinks are really good too. Bound to try them all! read more

B + R is a cute little townie looking spot (keyword little) with totally cool lights. Look up when you go. They had a nice selection of beers, but i was interested in learning more about the whiskeys, bourbons and ryes. Seems they don't have anyone to provide more info on those spirits. Bartenders are far too busy and the wait staff wasn't trained. I would go back, but I would like to see a better effort in educating us novices if at all possible. The food was fantastic. read more

Went in for lunch. Small place, with great service, good food (duck poutine, pot roast grilled cheese) perfect manhattan! Will go back again no doubt. read more

I don't make it outside of Chicago often, but was extremely fortunate to experience Barrel + Rye recently for lunch. Nice atmosphere, indoor seating space is moderate, but during warmer weather it appears outdoor tables would increase total seating materially (speculation, I did not receive explicit information from management regarding outdoor seating). In either case, the availability of outdoor seating is inconsequential to the allure as I would come here any time of the year. I had their signature Old Fashioned which was very good along with the shrimp and grits and B+ R Cobb salad. The shrimp and grits were absolutely top 2 or 3 I've ever had and, while the name doesn't necessarily come off as anything outside of middle of the road, the Cobb salad was conservatively above average and an easy choice to order again. My wife had the brisket grilled cheese which I sampled and it was very good as well. The staff was attentive, checking on us at appropriate intervals and also provided helpful guidance regarding food selections although I would say, albeit based on a small sample size, I would try the entire menu. There are a lot of venues in the immediate area for shopping making Barrel + Rye a must for a lunch or dinner break. This place can easily hold its own amongst the buzzy places in Chicago and is circled for whenever I'm going to be in the area. read more

We were impressed with every aspect of this place! Food, good. Drinks, good. Meat, good. Bianca, our server, was excellent! Water was never half empty, fast with everything. Every meal and drink we ordered was unique and delicious. We plan on returning very soon! read more

I absolutely love this place! My boyfriend and I try to make it a point to come here every weekend as our night out dinner. There's always a wait so I suggest calling ahead but it is so worth it!! They have a great selection of food to choose from and more than enough whisky to go around! The place has kind of a cozy, hole-in-the-wall feel that is nice to escape the cold weather from and a fun place to be in the summer. Totally recommended! read more

Really enjoy the food and drink selections here. My wife and I have been a handful of times and have yet to be disappointed.

The drinks were ok but need some improvement as some were better than others. The curds and elote were really tasty. However, my burger was not outstanding. In my opinion, if you are going to put a burger on the menu it better be one of the best burgers I've ever tasted, not a burger I can make at home. Also, the service needs major improvement. The waitress was too soft spoken and I could barely hear her. I got out of the bathroom and the woman who was going to clean it looked annoyed as she was waiting for me to get out. The staff needs their customer service skills adjusted overall. read more

Great food, staff and drinks. This is a must-do while visiting in Geneva.

Love this place! Great drinks and food! They take basic food items and turn them into a masterpiece! Had the bramble and bubbles drink and pesto cblt and was blown away by the taste. My husband, a total foodie, got the dip and was in love! Love the atmosphere too. Hard to find really great places outside the city but this place exceeds all expectations! Will definitely be coming back often. read more

High-end gastro bar with trendy decor. Interesting, intricate and scrumptious menu options, for both food and drink. Reasonably priced for high quality food. Go early or prepare to wait, as barrel + rye has become the #1 trendy spot in Geneva: It is a small place that fills up quickly, and they don't take reservations. read more

Read the reviews so had to pay this place a visit. Really like their decor and their service is top notch! They know and let me repeat, they know how to make a cocktail! Very impressive skills and their selection is just right. My wife really enjoyed the cucumber punch and I was in love with Cedar Smoked Manhattan! We only had their house charcuterie and that was very good. We will be going back for lunch or dinner in the next couple of weeks to taste their other menu selections. So we'll update our review then. read more
