We started off at pet stores with small, cheap gold fish. We have "graduated" to fancy gold fish,…read morebig tanks, and lots of plants. We now (usually) go to Aquarium and Reptile Depot - we really enjoy the variety of fish but I have been more impressed with the helpful suggestions (without being judgemental) and answer to questions from all their staff. They even had some advice for our Chocolate desert millipede (thanks Bugtopia - kill me!). As this is a recently aquired past time - we are still new to fish and although we make mistakes, we appreciate that they are willing to discuss and suggest things as issues come up. It's a little farther from our house but well worth it. I've read some good and bad reviews and realize that everyone's experience can be different - but we have made MANY trips there as we fumble our way through aquarium and aquarium care, and I don't have any complaints. Props to all the staff that have had to listen to me fumble through things I've read online and then offered diplomatic suggestions on how I should approach fish care.

I first found Aquarium Depot about 13 years ago when I was desperately searching for a specific…read moremedication for my goldfish. They not only had what I needed, but took the time to guide me through using it properly. That goldfish went on to live another eight years, and I've been a loyal customer ever since. They truly have just about everything I could need for both my aquariums and my bearded dragon. Most recently, I purchased a huge enclosure for my beardie from them, and they've even kindly taken in my pleco and MANY pleco babies when my fish apparently decided their aquarium needed to become a full-time breeding operation. One thing I've always appreciated is how they keep their animals. The aquariums with fish available for purchase are consistently clean and have plenty of plants, hiding spots, and enrichment. I've purchased fish here over the years and have never brought one home that had health issues. It's clear they take pride not only in their store, but in the care and environments they provide for their animals. After more than a decade of shopping here, I genuinely trust Aquarium Depot with my aquarium and reptile care. Their selection is fantastic, their knowledge has been invaluable, and they've consistently been there when I've needed help. Exactly what I want from a specialty pet store and an easy five stars from me.

My mom and I could not work in the yard because it was a rainy weekend. I had driven up from San…read moreFrancisco to help her with her immense yardwork. So we drove from the elk Grove area all the way out to Rockland to visit the store for the first time and we were not disappointed. Incredibly clean and well laid out store. The tanks are well-maintained and not overcrowded. Lots of ample parking and two of the nice gentlemen were working the day that we visited. My mom and I each purchased some fish and I purchased some decor. We were already super thrilled with this store when the unthinkable happened my mom I noticed looked like she was crying and when I ask her what was wrong I heard her blood sugar monitor go off. It was below 50 the picture you see was taken after the doughnut one of the gentleman at this location saw my mom was in peril and quickly acted and had the other gentleman working in the store bring up his snack bag of powdered sugar donuts, which saved the day I was able to get my mom back on track and some real food in her afterwards, but these guys definitely go above and beyond firstly with an amazing store and secondly with generosity thank you folks so much. We will definitely be going back to the store, even though it's well out of our way it's nice to support businesses who support their community and strangers, especially in a time of need.

I have mixed feelings about Aqua Life Aquarium. The store itself was clean and well organized, and…read morethe staff I encountered seemed friendly. I also did not notice any dead fish, and the water in the tanks appeared clean. What concerned me was the setup of many of the tanks. When I walked in, particularly along the right side and walls, I noticed several tanks containing fairly large or numerous fish with what appeared to be little more than water and bare glass -- no substrate, plants, or places to hide that I could see. Several of the fish were bunched together in the corners. There were tanks toward the center with plants and more enrichment, so the difference was especially noticeable. I understand there may be reasons aquarium stores keep certain sales or holding tanks very simple, and I don't claim to know their individual care protocols. It was just surprising to see so many fish in such bare environments at a specialty aquarium store. I'm accustomed to seeing specialty stores provide more habitat and enrichment than the average chain pet store, not less. Overall, I wouldn't call this a terrible experience. The store was clean, organized, and the employees seemed pleasant. I simply left with some concerns about the fish environments I observed and would have felt much better seeing more hiding places or enrichment in the tanks.

Been coming here now for a few years. And still love coming back…read more We mainly use them for beta fish and accessories. But they have so much to offer from all types of aquariums to snake and reptile enclosures. You name it they probably will have it or get it. We have gotten a few koi beta fish, they look so beautiful. We have also gotten 2 2 gallon open glass tanks, added a water heater and light above. Tossed in some duck weed they also sell here and gotten a few small snails. Think they are a razor or horn type.. they breed like crazy so we only got a few but have a dozen or so. Also we get some of the almond leaves for the tank, gives them almost a natural looking home habitat. The prices are on point with the big box stores and for stuff online as well. Definitely a business Worth checking out of your a novice or really into it, they can Help you start out or add on.

Extremely disappointing experience…read more I very rarely leave reviews like this, but unfortunately I feel other fishkeepers should know about my experience with Exotic Aquarium. The problems began before the fish even shipped. After I placed and paid for my order, I was informed that fish I had purchased were not actually in stock, despite the website clearly showing them as in stock when I ordered. That immediately made the transaction frustrating and raised concerns about how accurately their inventory was being represented. Unfortunately, things only got worse from there. I ordered multiple fish and, despite immediately placing them in a dedicated quarantine tank with carefully monitored and maintained water parameters, I lost all but one fish from the order. The fish developed what appeared to be parasites, an infection, or some other illness, and despite my efforts, none of the affected fish made it through quarantine. I have been keeping fish for years and have purchased livestock from numerous online retailers. I have never experienced losses like this from a single order. My quarantine tank was maintained with excellent water parameters, and these fish were never introduced into my established aquariums. What made the experience considerably more disappointing was how the situation was handled afterward. I contacted the owner about what happened and was refused any sort of refund or replacement. When nearly an entire order of livestock is lost during quarantine, especially following an order that had problems from the very beginning, I would expect a reputable seller to at least make a meaningful effort to work with the customer. I completely understand that shipping live fish carries inherent risks and that no retailer can guarantee the long-term health of every animal it sells. But there are countless reliable online fish sellers that genuinely value customer satisfaction, accurately represent what they have available, and fully stand behind the livestock they sell when legitimate problems arise. In my experience, Exotic Aquarium did the exact opposite. Between being told after payment that fish advertised as in stock were actually unavailable, losing all but one fish from the order, and then receiving no meaningful resolution from the owner, I simply cannot recommend Exotic Aquarium. I genuinely wanted this to be another retailer I could trust and continue purchasing from, which makes the experience even more disappointing. Based on what happened to me, I would stay far away and spend my money with one of the many established, reliable online fish retailers that actually stand behind what they sell and value their customers. You have nearly just as many 1 star reviews as you do good reviews, that should certainly be a prime indicator. You offered a $15 credit and offered to look at my water parameters, that was it. You still didn't speak to having false inventory advertised and that your entire shipment of fish passed away. Unfortunately, I will never purchase from Exotic Aquarium again.
