I was a huge supporter of this business for the past 18 years since I bought my first system through them. No less than 6 of my friends bought from them after talking to me about my system. Recently I ordered a UV replacement bulb from them. I bought it ahead of time as it's been hard to get them in a timely manner in the past. Open opening the package, I found the bulb broken in half. Trevor told me that he couldn't credit me for the bulb as it was too long after being shipped to me. He had no problem earlier this year though selling me 2 brand new pumps, bulkheads, etc. the business was much better when the Walker family was involved. 100 bucks down the drain.... We checked out this store today after looking at their website and hearing good things about the place from a friend. The Location is pretty new and the facilities looked well maintained. The main showroom carries nothing but pond pumps and filtration equipment. There was a older lady at the front desk who did not greet us, but as we walked towards the back room where the Koi were kept she stopped us and asked if we had ever been there before. We let her know we hadn't and thats' why we were here to check things out. She said you must sterilize your hands before going into the Koi room and that there was hand sanitizer on the wall. Wow I thought to myself, these people are really dedicated to taking care of their fish! The Koi looked spectacular, there was a large pool with about 20-30 two foot long koi inside and they were beautiful fish. There was another 3-4 smaller pools with more fish and one pool with Estate fish for sale. My daughter spotted a $50 fish she really liked so I asked the lady if we could bowl it and have a look at it. She got Steve (the owner) and he came out and caught the fish for us to look at. I noticed the fish had several blemishes around his head and I asked Steve if the fish was missing scales there. To my shock and horror Steve said that is Koi Pox. Koi Pox is relatively harmless to adult fish other than the unsightly blemishes on the fish. However Koi Pox can be deadly to juvenile fish like the one I was looking at. There is no treatment for Koi Pox and the only way to stop it from spreading is to isolate the fish. I thanked Steve for showing us the fish and promptly left the store. I cannot believe that a store which asks you to sanitize your hands before viewing their fish has virus infected Koi for sale. The fish was not in quarantine therefore all of the fish in the pool were being exposed to the virus as well. On top of all this when I asked if they carried plants the lady told me " we don't recommend plants as they can carry parasites" so they wont sell plants but they will sell you an infected fish! I will NEVER come back to this store again. read more

We have a large pond with large fish we had for many years, but a sudden outbreak caused us to lose nearly all of them and we didn't know why. We called Steve desperate for direction and answers and he patiently gave his time and possible explanations, as well as the sympathy for our losses as he knows how much your fish can come to mean for you. Called and made an appointment to have someone come out and teach me how to care for the koi pond that came with our new house. They were great! Since then? Crickets. They asked me to do a water test and drop it by their offices. It was meant to determine how many gallons my pond is in order to treat the algae. I did the test, and dropped it off at their facility (which was not easy, as they are not open to the public. Ridiculous.) I have called numerous times to get the results, to no avail. No one ever answers the phone, and despite leaving numerous messages, I have never received a call back. I will not be using them in the future. read more

I would never recommend these guys. I had a beautiful 40 year old Koi and Steve wanted it to sell to another one of his clients, but we told him our fish was not for sale. While they were housing my koi, while I was getting my pond built, they sold it out from under me and told me that it died. this was a priceless Koi fish!!! He gave me a deformed sick replacement and it was such an insult!!! I would never use this business ever again. Absolutely a scam from start to finish. From the health of the fish to building and maintaining a pond using their manufactured equipment, which goes faulty within a few short years of use, costing more to repair, fix, or replace. Koi are not healthy, and overtreated using antibiotics to rush them to sale. Disgusting practices and several local vets have confirmed the owner Steve does exactly that, loads fish up on drugs to sell them sick. Horrible experience, wish I had NEVER met this so called business. They are a scam and not reputable. The guys are only nice to you and full of customer service if you are buying, they are selling, and they are getting one over on you. I will never use them again and tell everyone I know to stay away, keep your money, and get healthy fish from a place that does not over treat these poor creatures with drugs. read more

Based upon the recommendation of our pond maintenance company, we purchased a complete pond system from Sacramento KOI for a new 6,000 gallon concrete pond which we are in the process of constructing to replace our old liner pond. Not having prior experience in building concrete ponds or swimming pools, we really leaned on Sacramento KOI for information, which has flowed freely. I have a pond with three very large Koi that we have had for over thirty years. One of my Koi was staying in the corner and not coming out so I called BJ Walker( who had helped me once before) She works with Sacramento Koi! I was so incredibly impressed with her knowledge and professionalism. She worked so hard for the hour and a half that she was at my house and was able to diagnose my koi perfectly. She took her time looking at my fish and putting some slides under the microscope after she scraped him. She even looked at my other Fish to make sure they didn't have any parasites. Once she realized that they did not, she went on to checking the water, the alkalinity and pH etc. There she found the problem. She even emptied my pond using a 5 gallon bucket faster than I can empty it using a shop vac. It was a lot of physical work on her part. She went above and beyond what was required and was so patient explaining everything to me. She is a pro! I am so happy that we found her and have someone we trust that we can call when our fish aren't doing well. My koi is no longer hiding in the corner and seems 100% better! I have to admit I've never been to this shop, but I HIGHLY recommend you go on YouTube and watch the unbelievably amazing video they put out talking about how they select and purchase koi while traveling in Japan. A true masterpiece you could easily confuse with a Discovery Channel professional production. Last year, I bought a house and decided to build a koi pond in memory of my Dad who passed away 10 years ago. He had a koi pod built, but he was never happy with how it came out. I found Sacramento Koi's videos on Youtube and watched them over and over again. From it, I found their web site and FREE plans. I drew out several plans for my yard (based on their plans) and started shopping for equipment. I saw that their equipment cost a bit more than what I was looking to spend, so I looked everywhere else... online, local shops, etc. My journey was a horrible one... I look young and don't dress too flashy, so 95% of stores I went to would either ignore me or act like I was bothering them with my questions and was wasting their time. I even went to the Sacramento Home and Garden Show at the Expo and same thing... ignored or not taken seriously. I figured I'd drop by Sac Koi just to see their equipment in person, and I was pretty much expecting the same thing. The minute I walked in, Jeff approached me, and he asked what brought me into the store. I told him about my build and said that I was a fan of their videos on Youtube. He showed me the equipment and the different options and why he feels that theirs is the best you can get on the market. We went over rough plans (because I had left mine at home), and he offered some recommendations. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of liner vs concrete, as well as showed me what different equipment I would want to use for either case. Steve came out (the guy in the videos), introduced himself to me, thanked me for coming into the store, and offered to review my plans free of charge, whether or not I purchased his equipment. They completely blew my mind!!!! All in all, I believe I spent about 2 hours in their shop that day. With that type of customer service, I definitely knew that in one way or another, I was going to do business with them. I played around with my plans and budget then went back to the store to put in my order. I was just in the planning stage and asked Jeff if I could just put a down payment on the equipment and not pay it off until my pond was ready so that my year guarantee wouldn't start until I've actually started using the equipment. I estimated 3-4 months before I would be ready to take home my equipment. He was able to accommodate. That was back in November, and building the pond on my own, it took a lot longer than I planned, but I still go in the shop about once a month to buy more equipment as needed (plumbing, super blockade, skimmer, auto-fill, aerated bottom drain, etc.). Each time, I pick Jeff's brain, and he has helped me every step of the way with my build with great advice and even names of contractors. Both Jeff and Steve have been very helpful on my build. Steve even told me: "Don't rush, and don't settle. If it takes a year to complete the job so that it's the way YOU want it, so be it. It's not always the destination, sometimes it's the journey that makes it great." He's right. And when this journey is complete, I will have Jeff and Steve at Sacramento Koi to thank, because I couldn't have gotten this far without them! The Walker family are such great people to deal with. As a contractor - I only refer people who I know will do a fantastic job, because if I give out a bad referral then that makes me look bad and customers then question my quality. Whenever I refer people to Sac Koi to buy fish, filter systems etc.... I always know the customer will be happy and it will reflect better on my own company when the homeowner sees the type of people I refer. This is one of the few companies I refer people too. I have had a Koi pond (1,800 gallons) for about 25 years. The design was great but the filtering was a mess. There was a pump, filter and UV light but it was put together in an ad hoc way. It was time for a refresh and I found Sacramento Koi while out driving 1 day. Their pump systems are well designed and easy to use. I got their system for up to 2,000 gallons and the pump was smaller than my existing system (less $ to operate) with a greater flow. It has been in operation for about a month and so far it is great (I will update my review after a summer season). I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because getting a bid was a little work (I drove the process) and prior to the install it would have been nice to get a confirmation they were coming (I had to call that day). But so far the system is working great. read more

I left two messages inquiring about regular pond maintenance service, and never heard back from anyone after a few days. I called again today, and spoke with a lady. She said that they're overloaded right now and couldn't help. So she basically turned away business. Could she at least have called me back to turn away my business? So that's how they got one big fat star from me. My mom is looking to buy a lot of new koi fish for her pond, and since they are so overloaded, they will not be getting any business from me. read more

I purchased a home in Lincoln that had a Koi pond and the previous owner could not take the Koi with him. He left about 20 beautiful Koi in the pond for a "rookie" like myself (and my wife). We moved here from South Carolina and I had never heard of Koi and had no idea what I was getting into. My first interaction with Sac Koi was just to purchase food and ask general questions. Steve and the entire team there were great!! They informed me of what I need to do and how I need to take care of my Koi. Around mid June, 2013, the pond turned a horrible green color and we could barely see the fish. My father was coming out for a visit and I asked Steve to come out and help me clear up the mess. He promptly came out (and yes, there is a service charge but that is to be expected!). He took a lot of time showing me how to correctly backwash, rinse, etc as well as how to clear up the murky pond. Steve knew the previous owner as well so he was familiar with the pond setup. He went out of his way(in terrible heat wave I must add!) to take care of my situation and make me feel more comfortable with my fish. I never thought I would enjoy Koi like I have over the past year since we purchased our home. They are like family once you get to know them...they are like having a loyal dog at your side. We had the unfortunate experience of one fish coming down with some type of infection where the fish had to be euthanized(sp?). Steve's daughter was especially sensitive in taking care of that horrible task...and made me feel so much better. I'm just glad my wife did not have to be there because she is even more attached to these fish than I am. However, I was able to tell my wife that the fish did not suffer and we are safer as far as the disease not spreading to the other fish in the pond. I can not say enough good things about the team at Sac Koi. I highly recommend them for all of your pond needs. read more

Exceptional customer service. And I am not even a customer, and live 2000 miles away. Let me explain. When we bought our house in Kailua, Oahu, it came with a koi pond and some beautiful fish. Recently the filter was needing to be backwashed every two-three days, and the water was not nearly as clear as when we first moved in a year ago. There are not a lot of pond supply stores in Hawaii, in fact, none. When I called Sacramento Koi for help with the Bead filter they had supplied to the previous owner several years ago, Steve (the owner) spent 30 minutes on the phone with me explaining in detail how the system worked and I could go about trouble-shooting, diagnosing, and fixing the problem. For customer service after the sale I found Sacramento Koi and Steve to be top notch! I live on the east coast so all of my interactions with this company have been either by phone, message, or email. I am a newbie to keeping koi. My pond was new last spring. When I opened it this spring I found that I had made a rookie mistake by not backwashing during the winter. There was immovable black gunk on the viewing port of the filter that would not go away even after extensive backwashing. A call to Sacramento solved the problem. The woman who answered the phone assured me that the problem was fixable and patiently with much detail told me how to fix the problem. More recently a fitting in the filter plumbing gave way while I was backwashing, making the filter system inoperable. An emergency call to Sacramento Koi got a quick answer and a request to send them a picture. I did right away and within a few minutes Steve called, discussed the situation with me and determined I needed a new part. He packaged the part right away. It arrived the next day. I am not the handiest person and needed help installing the new part. Several calls to Steve got my filter system running again. My system was up and running again in a day! Steve was freely giving of his time and expertise each time I called. He was patient, helpful, and professional. After each call he asked that I let him know how things were going.
