I've done business with the guys as a general contractor in Nevada county. A huge rock flew off of one of the delivery trucks today on hwy 80. My passenger and I both saw this thing from so far away heading at us and when it hit my passenger ducked. We pulled beside the vehicle and took a picture of the door and called the company. A lady answered and we told her what happened and where the truck was heading and immediately she says, ( that's impossible he has a load of bark). My passenger spoke up and said he saw it fly off the upper part of the truck and she answered with, prove it! I told her that I had done business with them before and that I would never handle things like this as a company. Look at my reviews and you will no I'm a stand up business owner. Delivery gets cheaper the more cubic yards you order and I believe it's free if you order more than 6 (?). I used to like these guys. I've done hundreds if not thousands of dollars of business with them over the years, and up until this last delivery everything has been great. As a matter of fact, even though the delivery went afoul that's not the worst part. The worst part of this situation was the response I received after lodging my complaint. Let me start from the beginning... I am in the process of fire hardening our house, so the bark mulch we have around the roses right next to the house has to go. My wife and I found a suitable replacement, rock, and I ordered 2 yards. I was not home on delivery day but my wife was. She knew where I wanted the rock dropped. I even put a tarp down and put heavy sticks/small logs on the corners so the wind wouldn't blow it around. Unfortunately, the wind did blow a bit as you can see from the photos below. It blew the tarp cattywampus and away from the open area all primed and ready for the rock. The wind blew the tarp into the bark around a few of our roses. Why would I purposefully place the tarp cattywampus and especially why would I place the tarp onto the bark I need to replace when there was soooo much more open area on the other side? These are questions that should have entered the delivery driver's cranium but apparently did not. He didn't even have the good and decent sense to check with my wife...who was home...waiting for the delivery...the garage door with car inside was open... Nah, why bother. He just dropped the load right there. Fortunately my wife happened out of the house about the time he dropped, and flabbergasted, asked what he was doing. The driver apparently did attempt to shovel some of the misplaced rock back, but in doing so added bark to the rock pile. I called Rare Earth the next day and explained my situation. The middle aged woman who hates her job listened to my polite discourse and responded with, "So?" So I asked what could be done about this? I either wanted someone from their company to come out and separate the bark and rock or take most of the delivery charge away. She put me on hold, then came back with "We'll have to speak with the driver." I haven't heard from them since. It's been two days. They're either having trouble communicating with their own driver like my wife did or they don't care about my business, which they have now lost. It took me a bit over an hour to clean up the rock, and trust me, I doubt many could do it faster. I happen to have a particular set of skills which allow me to do things like that rather quickly. But I also have plenty of other things to do and really don't have the time nor inclination to clean up after someone else's mistake. But there it is, and away I go. They really handle the loaders with precision. I buy a lot of gravel, and top soil and I plan to give them a lot more business in the future. I highly recommend ! BEWARE! I would never recommend this company to anyone. We purchased a large amount of their top of the line soil this year for a hefty price as it was advertised as being ready to plant. We have had nothing but problems since using it. We finally tested the soil (which they supposedly did) to find it had a ph of 8!! We wanted to assume this was a horrible mistake and that they unknowingly sold us a bad product. Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case as they still have not called us back. We have now had to spend huge amounts of money on fixing this issue, with absolutely no help from rare earth. They lack integrity and are the opposite of customer focused. I am incredibly disappointed in the product, company, and lack of respect and customer service. read more

Agree with all the other posters here about their soil quality. It's nasty. Got their "top of the line" soil to add to a lawn that needed help, and within two weeks I was growing both a red and white fungus on different parts of the grass. On top of that, there were TONS of rocks mixed in. Nice big ones, about the size of golf balls. Way to make my lawn kid-friendly! I'm giving two stars because some of their other products are just fine, such as bark. Will continue to buy "non volatile" stuff like that, but absolutely no way will I buy any soil or fertilizer products from these guys. read more

Wow! This soil was chock full of stuff! Although it ended up being sodium, fungus gnats and root rot. The only thing that is rare about this business is their integrity and customer service. After checking around town i found many others with similar stories. "They've gone downhill in the last few years..." seemed to be the common response. If you're looking for a company that is unwilling to stand behind their products and makes use of cheap ingredients then look no further. I find this place to be cheaper than most from a price point. I buy their cheap mix if it looks decent, and mix it with native. I mean a yard of soil in the back of your truck for under $50. I have found decent sized rocks in the soil...And the soil has been really hot so i water it down before i plant in it. Its works for me. read more

Wow! What a great company! We ordered 34 TONS of Cobble rock and got the best price by far. We checked four other landscaping companies in the area and their price could not be beat. Upon delivery, which was the next day! - their driver (Barry) who was extraordinarily friendly and helpful - dropped the rock where we thought he couldn't put it - but made our job super easy when distributing it. We received a really bad batch of soil for our veggie garden and because everyone told us they were the best place to buy soil, we filled out veggie beds and pots with it. We purchased their top of the line soil! Three years later we haven't been able to afford the time or money to fully replace it and it is only in the last 6 months that we have been able to get much of anything to grow in it. Don't buy soil from here. We have had nothing but problems- from insects, mold, mildew and rust to straight up dead plants and very poor water absorption and retention, despite hundreds of dollars of amendments and irrigation attempts! This soil isn't even worthy of ornamentals, let alone food production. read more

They shorted us, probably not intentionally, of our paid-for order for 1.5 yards of bark today. My wife called to straighten up the matter. The blonde girl at the counter, who has always been friendly, challenged us and made us feel like criminals. It's about 0.5 yards, or $25 that we feel shorted. We've been customers for 7 years, used Rare Earth to landscape our yard, spent thousands! We are good customers and they want to dicker over $25, we're done! No gratitude for loyal customers, we're going to 4 seasons from now on! At 4 seasons, 1.5 yards of bark is equal to about .75 yards of bark at Rare Earth! We have 2 other friends who feel the same about Rare Earth because of negative experiences that they have had.. They are losing business because they treat a customer like a criminal. I like there products, but there prices are high. I purchased soil from them, and my lil truck only holds half a yard. When I brought the soil home (under a tarp) each time the half a yard was about 15 gallons short. Which in total was about a quarter yard short or 100$ worth the soil, at 400$ a yard. This was the worst experience I've ever had at a soil place and we'll no longer be returning. After bringing this to there attention, There response was that the operators are certified, and to talk to them. Wrong answer to tell a customer well ex customer now. Thanx for wasting my time R.E. and over charging me. Hope this review stops others from getting robbed and over charged for products there not receiving. read more

I've used these guys a few times for rocks and stepping stones and usually been happy with them. Today though 1/30/16 I'm pretty upset. I have to drive about 20 mins (so 40 round trip) to get to there. I checked their hours online and confirmed they don't close till 5. So I drove my gas guzzling truck to pick up some rocks and got there at 4:30 only to find a closed/locked gate with a signed on it saying they were open till 5. I called there number and was sent to voicemail. Their were employee vehicles still in the parking lot getting ready to leave. I think they were playing hookey and closing early for the day. It pissed me off because it wasted my time and cost me money. read more

I showed the photos to rare earth and got excuses! I have all my receipts for my plants. I asked for if they were going to reimburse me for my plants- no, was their answer.
