I'm not sure what's going on with this place but it used to be a great place to shop. Now when we go they're constantly out of items. For example, they haven't had cottage cheese for weeks. We called and asked why on the phone and they say it's because of manufacturing issues but Albertsons, down the street has tons of it; so much so they have it on sale, so I don't think that's what's going on. Their dairy section always seems hit or miss- and it's been a miss a lot lately. Something is wrong with their ordering. There is no consistency. Another issue is with their rotisserie chickens. Most of the time they are all burnt. We've asked multiple people in the front of the store at checkout and honestly, most of them don't even know they sell chickens. It's really odd how people working in such a small store have no idea what's going on in the back of the store. And obviously no one working there seems to notice nor care that the chickens are all burnt. I don't understand how no one working there says anything. I mean, it looks a bit strange to be selling burnt chicken, no? In addition there is no consistency in the sizes of their rotisserie chicken. They used to be like 3- 3.5 lbs each. Now they're often 2 lbs and under and they're the same price. If there's going to be such a discrepancy in weight, they should be sold by the pound. Getting back to ordering, I'm not 100% sure but it seems like one of their freezers malfunctioned because they had it empty for a few days. Then all of a sudden all the ice cream that they put back in the freezer looked like it had previously melted and instead of throwing the sticky melted messy ice cream out, they just put it back for sale. I was going to buy some but I could tell that the cartons didn't look right. That is not okay. It should be counted as waste and restocked with fresh product. I don't think Tillamook would appreciate them selling their product that's obviously not up to standards. Regarding their soup bar, I have noticed in the evening, before even the local jui jitsu gym lets out next door, they are often out of multiple soups. I'm talking at like 530pm. The hot bar is often similar. Why is this not being restocked for dinner? Lastly, I just want to reiterate that although the cashiers are usually very friendly, they really should know what's going on in the back of the store. I mean, when we ask them about the soups, they should at least know that soup is sold there. They should know if they cook the chickens in- house and/ or who to speak to regarding the fresh food. They act like they've never seen the back of the store. So I suggest maybe giving them a tour when they're hired and telling them some things so that when they're the only ones customers have the opportunity to speak to, they have some knowledge of what's being sold. It was almost humourous when we asked why the chickens were always burnt and they were like, oh we sell chickens? Seriously. That's bad training. You can do better and I really want you to. I do appreciate there being a smaller grocery store here and their produce section is great. It just seems like some things are slipping a bit. read more

One of the reasons I love Baron's so much is their wide selection of products. I was shocked and thrilled to see, in the freezer section, Detroit-style pizza from Buddy's! As a transplant from Detroit, it was SO awesome to see a little delicious piece of home. The flavor is on point. Nice market. They have a nice selection of so much. They even carry a good selection of gluten free foods. The produce section is well taken care of and looks great. I really enjoy the fresh baked goods and the plants for sale. I do think they need to water their garden plants for sale more often. The quality of the produce has declined significantly. The roasted chickens are small but good, and up u til recently were reasonably priced. Their soups are also pretty good, and they have a nice salad bar. My biggest issue is the way they check-out. During covid they had one line that fed into all of the registers. They have kept using that system.m, which is fine except that some people cut into the check-out because they don't realize there is a line. Then I was told they were not doing that anymore, which is fine. Followed this system until my last visit when I started to put stuff on a conveyer belt and an employee pointed to the line I had not seen. Pick a system. I don't care what it is, but make it clear. read more

I wanted to share my experience a few days ago at Barons Market in Alpine. While doing my shopping, I went over to the soup bar and noticed an elderly employee with red hair, who I often see there, seemed pretty agitated. She was speaking loudly to another employee about being short-staffed and later, in the back, I overheard her saying, "I shouldn't have to deal with this shit." This was the first time I've seen like this. Super unusual for this store the staff are always very friendly. As a business owner myself, I find this kind of unprofessional conduct concerning, especially in front of customers. I hope this feedback is helpful. read more

They have organic milk in glass containers, organic whipping cream in glass container, and organic half and half in glass containers. The organic chai tea concentrate regular price is over $3 cheaper here than Albertsons' regular price. The vanillas are higher quality and cheaper here than Albertsons. I like they have a larger selection of middle eastern ingredients and middle eastern spices than Albertsons. I like the self-service fresh orange juice crush/press machine, it's clear so you can see the oranges being crushed whole. read more

The market is located in a nice shopping center. The parking lot is very sloped, so watch out for run away carts. Inside the market you will find everything you need. The hot soup bar is great for a quick meal or easy dinner. Staff seems helpful, but the old woman who does the demos in the back is not welcoming and always has RBF. I like coming here, that's the first place I think about when I'm in a crunch about dinner with my girls. We get the salad bar and soup. They have a big selection of products that are good for you and taste good. The cashiers are sweet and I really really enjoy this store. Only thing is that odd smell when you go inside. Great market for us that can still afford to eat healthy and be conscious of what we put in our bodies. They could definitely use more dairy alternative in the ice cream section. Perhaps they will carry my brand one day ;) I went in for a few things. Dairy free ice cream some coffee blend for the am and some bananas. Please tell me why there was a quite large display of GREEN BANANAS???? Who is running the produce and ordering??? THIS IS BARONS OF ALPINE HERE... hello???? I really enjoy shopping at Barons Market in Alpine. It seems like a cross between Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. The produce is fresh and reasonably priced. There are lots of premade salads and ready to heat meals. I also love the soup bar. They have a pretty extensive salad bar as well. Help yourself to the fresh salad bar 6.99$ per pound, olive gourmet bar, or the soup bar (good for fall/winter time in alpine) This is my go to place if your looking to try new craft beers, or hard alcohols. They have a huge selection of local breweries and California made beverages. The store has "fresh produce" although there has been instances when the fruits we bought was overly ripe and spoiled way sooner then expected. So that questions the freshness of the fruits here. The staff are very nice and helpful. The store is always clean. I love the grab and go meals that are prepped in the refrigerator section there are chipotle wraps, chicken wraps, tuna, etc very quick meals. The meats are freshly packaged , they have a good selection of frozen fish products. I also love to build my own pizza by purchasing the dough and using the olive bar options for my toppings. When we moved to Alpine I was really concerned about grocery shopping. We moved from Escondido and I literally had every grocery store you could think of at my disposal. But I typically stuck to Trader Joe's and Sprouts. I actually found Barons to be a great marriage of both TJ and Sprouts. They have a great produce section, salad bar, olive bar, soup bar, and bulk items. They also support local farmers and businesses! In fact, their craft beer includes lots of SD Breweries, and you can find lots of wine from Temecula too! If you shop the frozen section you will find lots of items TJ sells under their brand here under their true brand names. The cherry on the cake is the staff. So friendly and accommodating. The produce Manager is always happy to cut open fruit for you to try, my two year old loves that. And the older ladies who run the samples at the back of the store are the sweetest! Even the cashiers up front are friendly and talk to everyone in their lines. We are very lucky to have Barons in our community. High quality, low prices, and friendly staff. Barons is one of the first grocery stores I discovered upon moving to San Diego, and I fell in love with their amazing soup and salad bars. They even convinced me that I needed beets in my life, and that was certainly a surprise. Who knew I'd fall in love with a root vegetable that tastes like dirt -- but in a good way?! When we moved out to Alpine, we were upset that we were so far away from a Barons location... until they built one right down the street, woohoo! Before Barons, the only place to buy groceries in Alpine was Albertson's, which is terribly overpriced on most of the items we regularly buy (i.e. healthy choices, not junk food), and doesn't have much in the way of organic products, nor any grass-fed beef. In short, it was quite the food desert up here, and we often made a trek down the hill to go to Sprout's. In short, I can't believe I haven't reviewed this store yet! It's absolutely one of our go-to grocery stores, and we love having Barons right in our backyard. As mentioned in my review of their Point Loma store, the salad bar here is fantastic. I always make a crazy creation with the ingredients available, and it's magically delicious and almost always under $5. (You pay by weight, so if you stick to light ingredients, you'll do well at this challenge.) My husband describes my salads as "all of the most disgusting things in the salad bar, together," although I must respectfully disagree. What's wrong with mixed greens, beets, garbanzo beans, artichoke hearts, red and yellow peppers, shredded carrots, shredded radish, a hard-boiled egg (2 halves), bacon, parmesan and a little bleu cheese dressing? NOTHING, THAT'S WHAT. I usually throw in a sweet pepper on the side, too, just because I like their tang. The soup bar has an ever-changing selection of tasty, filling soups and chili, which is perfect in the winter months when you need something to warm you up. My favorite is definitely the green chicken chili, for when I don't want to set up the slow cooker and make a batch myself. Yum! The olive bar is also excellent, even though I hate olives. Their secret? They offer lots of other things BESIDES olives! (It's actually an "olive and antipasto bar," FYI.) For instance, the roasted artichokes are super tasty. They're not always offered, but if they're available I always grab some. I also love their stuffed peppers and mushrooms, and the artichoke salad mix is delicious as well. Rotisserie chickens always come in handy when you're not sure what to make for dinner, and at $4.99 they're super budget-friendly. Organic meat is available here, which is one of the biggest pros of shopping at Barons. Though, yes, the prices will be higher than non-organic meat, you'll still find great deals on grass-fed steaks and other items. The wine selection here is fantastic, and I have found a few favorites that I will typically buy for less than $10 a bottle. They also carry Crispin, my favorite cider, and at a better price than Albertson's, too. Basically, I have nothing bad to say about Barons, which is quite a feat. Every time I have had questions or suggestions for items they should carry, I've gotten great service from their employees, even via Twitter. In fact, I once tweeted to ask if they were still out of my brand of shampoo, since I only saw the conditioner on the shelves, and they double-checked to let me know that the company had actually changed the label on the one I wanted, but it was there. They even snapped a picture to show me, which was super helpful. To conclude this already ridiculously long review, I just realized I ran of out of cream for my coffee this morning, so I'm going to walk over there and buy a cup from their coffee bar RIGHT NOW. They also carry a high selection of craft beers and wine, along with soda, kombucha, and non-dairy beverages, if you are looking for that. Love this market! Very friendly and helpful Manager and staff! The salad bar and soup bar is kept fresh and tidy with tasty selections! Half or whole sandwiches are available and great with the soup! It's nice to have a place to go for a healthy selection for lunch or dinner instead of a drive thru or a restaurant. There are tables outside where you can sit and chat and enjoy your food. Baron's had an awesome Grand Opening, which included $25 gift certificates for the first 100 customers in line. You bet I was in line an hour early. In addition, I won a $5 gift certificate for signing up for their newsletter. Moderate selection of organic vegetables. Small selection of bulk food, reasonably priced. Good salad bar, priced below Whole Foods. No hot foods at the salad bar like at WF. About six soups offered daily, including both veggie and meat chili. I do wish they would offer their tomato soup in a veggie broth vice chicken. There's always samples at the back. Decent selection of cheese, dairy, gluten-free. A few ready-made sammies, lots of Amy's and Annie's frozen entrees, plus quite a few vegetarian items, fresh and frozen. Ahhh, the wine and beer. Many microbrews I have never heard of, good selection of cider. They have wine in the cheap to moderate price range. I love specialty soda, and they have half a cooler full, including Maine root and Virgil's. Priced a little higher than Sprout's or Trader Joe's, MUCH cheaper than Whole Foods. WOW! What great place to shop if you are a healthy eater,Vegan and/or Gluten Free. I can not believe the options that this store offers; 3 different types of salad bars and one of them was an Olive bar with different types of Olives that I have never even seen. You can sample the different types of salad options (rice,edemame, etc...) they have vendor food sample carts also. As a Vegan I was like a kid in candy store. Friendly service and great selection of items you can't find in Sprout. The only thing Sprouts has over Barons is the price and selection on Organic Fruit / Veggies; I think that is my only gripe. Love Barons market overall It's a great addition to the Alpine community. Great selection of craft beers, wines, bulk bin items, some local organic produce and regular fruits and veggies (though not alwAys super fresh so beware), dairy case, gluten free section, fresh hot soups and salad bar. ( LOVE the soup and salad bar!!!) Good pre packaged meats and frozen fish although I would love it if they had s fresh deli, meat and seafood , cheese and bakery on site. One can dream! The manager (marilyn) is very unprofessional and disrespectful. She does not know how to handle a simple mistake upon her cashiers doing and instead embarrassed and humiliated me by following me to my car with my infant in my arms yelling infront of the store that I need to pay for my groceries which I had a receipt and bank transaction shown to her. She made me feel like a criminal and had the audacity to tell me " you can give me back the groceries since you don't want to pay " ... YIKES I used to come here often because it was a little easier for me to shop with my baby but my family and I will no longer be supporting barons. The poor cashier was scared of this woman! read more
