Apple picking is a fun fall activity though it is still very hot in mid September . Volcan Valley farm is $5 to enter and $18 a bag of apples (6-7 lbs). The apples are very small (this year? Always?) and honestly not very good. Go for the experience but not really for the apples.

They are open for the 2024 season starting today, 9/8/24. No reservation required. We went right at opening at 9am and there were already a lot of people waiting to enter. There is parking along the fence at the north and south entrance. If there's no parking on the side of the road, don't worry and actually keep driving to go around the back. There is a large parking lot and another entrance there! It might be faster to enter that way than the front anyways. They have portable bathrooms available at the entrance. It is $5 for entrance and $15 for a bag. They take both card and cash. You don't have to get a bag if you want to share one bag for the group. The bags are paper bags so be careful and maybe have a shopping bag in your car so you could transfer them when you get back in your car (of course don't bring it to the actual Apple picking). It is dog friendly so bring your fur child~ There were people with strollers and wagons so bring them if you need. There's plenty of space for them. Although they just opened today, the Gravensteins were all gone as those ripen early August. So skip rows 20 and 25. They have nothing on the trees. There were plenty of the other types though (Jonathan, empire, golden delicious and pippin). I feel the bag has gotten smaller than before but I counted 26 apples when I got home. Of course they are of various sizes but it was 6 per row that could fit in the bag. The apples are quite dusty so clean them before you try them!

Annual tradition of family apple picking! Like to get there early to beat the crowds, and parking in the parking field in the back. Love how many different apple varieties there are! (Only one complaint the bags get smaller every year) $15 per bag, and $5 per person, 5yo and under are free

One bag ($15)

Reasonably priced, especially if you only care about apple picking and not the other activities. $5 for admission per person and then $15 for a bag that can be shared. Huge apple orchard with clearly marked rows and they offer guidance on where to find which apples... varieties that seemed riper were the Empire and Jonathans when we were here mid-Sept. The Gala and Fuji apples that were a little tougher to find even though they say they are at the end of each row. They have portable toilets for anyone who needs. The parking lot is on the side near the farm and seems to be plenty for everyone if you have some patience even coming later in the day.

Super cute place but I'd say it's probably better to come earlier in the picking season when it first opens because while there were a lot of apples on the trees....they were majority super small and underripe. That was super disappointing. We managed to find a few decent apples. Worth it for the experience. The apples were a 2-3. Experience and getting to check out Julian was a 5.

Most apples were available but the bags got smaller. We picked apples during the heatwave and luckily it was cooler with a breeze in Julian which made it nice to pick apples.

Our family has been visiting this orchard since my daughter was 3 years old. It's become tradition. To this day, she still looks forward to apple picking. This orchard has at least 4 different types of apples to chose from. The people who work there are welcoming and helpful. Admission is $5 a person and $15 for a bag. Personally, the price is worth the simple yet, wholesome family time.

First time picking apples here and we came at the very end of the season but there were still plenty of apples left and we left very happy! I haven't taken the road from Julian but if you come from the direction of Wynola and Santa Ysabel it's an uphill climb with lots of turns and the road is pretty narrow. Drive slow and you can hopefully avoid your passengers getting carsick! There is plenty of parking along the road where there is lots of lemonade and food stands. If you can't find any, continue driving and there will be signs that directs you to a large open empty field to park. Good thing is there is also an entrance from the empty field so you don't have to walk all the way back to the "entrance" in the front. The price to enter is $5 per person. Free for those 5 and under. It costs $15 for a bag that they provide and you place your picked apples there. We were asked by the attendant if we wanted sweeter apples or more tart apples and was directed the way that we should go! The orchard is at a slight incline so watch your steps! The trees are not too tall so picking apples is very easy! I had a blast and would go again. Go to their Facebook and instagram to have the most updated apple picking news for the season. They close for the season when all apples are gone.

This is a cute little apple farm that has 40+ rows of apple trees with 3-4 varieties to chose from. The bags they give you at the entrance are sturdy enough to hold a full bag! 4/5 stars because the apple trees were over picked and the apples were quite small and tart. We recommend wearing shoes that are good in the loose dirt. Overall it was a great experience and would highly recommend it if you want a fun fall activity to do with family/friends. The apples were perfect for an apple pie!

First time for the whole family to go apple picking, we got two bags and had five people with us, around $60 to get in and pick your own apples to take home. The staff is very friendly and will help you with any questions you have on the orchard. We tried to get "store sized" apples and found one, but all the apples regardless of size taste amazing!

My boyfriend and I had the best time at the Volcan Valley Apple Farm! We even got to meet the farmer and he gave us some helpful tips on which apples to pick. Beautiful scenery and yummy apples. My bf and I had so many and we only got one bag full. We ate half and made an apple pie and apple turnovers out of the rest.

Great day trip to Julian for apple picking with the family. Driving to the location on a winding road was very scenic. Admission was $5 and $15 per bag of apples, card only when I went. The types of apples available are Gravenstein, Jonathan, Empire and golden delicious. There was plenty of parking and they have food and beverages as well. It's best to go earlier in the season as apples run out quickly and pick apples from the edges as most pick from the center lanes so there's less apples. Overall it's kind of pricey but it's also an activity so I would return next year.

Nayla S.

Such a unique activity for the fall! It was $15 for the bag and $5 per person for admission. I compared prices and it seems to be one of the more reasonable options. We came on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all. They had a variety of apples and there were still plenty to choose from. If I remember correctly they had Jonathan, Golden delicious and Empire apples. The apples were delicious and perfect for some apple pie.

Short lines! Woohoo!

Ask the Community - Volcan Valley Apple Farm

Was there any spraying of pesticides this year?

No.

What varieties are grown here? We were there 2 weeks ago and picked (cooking apples) but I forget the name

We picked "Golden Delicious" and "Jonathan" "Johnathan" seemed to be a majority. of their inventory. They are great.

What are your hours this Sunday and Monday are you open for other activities at your farm since apple picking is closed?

Volcan Valley Apple Farm will be closed after Saturday October 7, which is our last day of apple picking.

Are you guys open for apple picking this Sunday 10/8 or Monday 10/9?

No. The last day for the 2023 harvest will be Saturday, 10/7

How do we reserve a spot for apple picking/are there apples left to pick for this weekend?

no reservations required at the Volcan Valley Apple Farm. Open Friday thru Sunday 9am to 4:30pm. Lots of apples for this weekend and next

Is there anything to pick right now? And when does Apple picking start. I missed it last year!

no date for 2022 harvest set yet. Best estimate is the weekend after Labor Day weekend. Updated info at 760-302-4574

Are you still open? It says here that you are but when I called your number it says that Friday was the last day. Can we come today? Thanks!

The apples are picked and gone. The 2021 Picking season is over and the orchard is closed. Call 760-302-4574 for updates on the orchard and the 2022 harvest

Are dogs welcome?

Yes. And we provide water for the dogs

What kind of apples are available this year?

7 varieties from red crunchy to green cooking. Apples for every taste

Are we allow to bring a wagon into the farm?

No Conestogas or Wells Fargo wagons--but kid wagons are welcome

Will it be open this year? If so, when is the first weekend?

Apple picking begins Sunday September 5 and Monday September 6 (Labor Day) and will continue on subsequent weekends Friday through Monday in September until the apples are gone.

Hi, we are planning on coming there to pick apples. Are there apples left or should we have come sooner?

Sorry. The apples are picked and the 2020 season is over. The orchard opens when the apples are ripe and closes when they are gone. To get the latest info on when the next season starts, keep in touch with our phone # 760-302-4574

Hi What are your hours of operations?

The orchard is closed. The 2020 harvest is over. The apples are harvested and gone. When the orchard is open for our U-Pick customers. our hours are 9am to 4:30pm Friday thru Monday

What are the hours you are open?

Are the apples organic? Doesn't have to be certified organic, but needs to be pesticide free for us.

This year we used an antiobiotic to help the trees fight off any infection and anti bird spray to keep the birds off the apples. No pesticides

Will it be open tomorrow for Apple picking? If so what times?

They are only open Friday through Sunday so weekends only. And this may be the last weekend.

Are there a lot of bees? My husband is allergic and I want to be prepared

We went last weekend and yes there were a few bees. It wasn't as some reviewers said where it was crazy but we did see a bee or 2 on each tree aisle. And I think they actually might have been wasps? Very large

Cash only? How much is it per bag?

They take credit too. $12/bag.

What our their hours of operations during the week/weekend?

They only open for picking Friday through Monday so no weekdays. 9a-430p

What is the starting date and ending date that you can usually find apples still here before they get too picked over? Thanks!

Our U-Pick will open for all varieties Friday 9/6 and run Friday through Monday every weekend until the apples run out. I recommend the 9/6-9 or 9/13-16 weekends for the most ripe apples

Staff was friendly and very helpful in navigating, especially when you forget where you are supposed to walk to in order to pick your fruit. Upon arrival the location from the front the street was quaint and idyllic with street parking. Allow me to state the good aspects: 1. The apples and pears were delicious. 2. The helper (don't know her name) was kind and approachable. 3. The views from the top of the hill are beautiful. 4. The cider was tasty! 5. Arleen's apple facts were interesting and one child attendee guessed the answers with shocking accuracy. Now the not-so great: 1. The wi-fi signal is very weak which makes paying via Venmo a problem. 2. THE FLIES!!!!! THE FLIES!!! THE FLIES!!!! The flies were something biblical. They were quite insufferable... Everyone was swatting the air around them or some part of their body, or trying to shoo flies away from their children's faces, arms, and legs. Which you can imagine caused quite a constant murmur of chatting among parents helping kiddos. At this point, Arleen decided to share some apple facts before apple picking commenced. She did not have a mic- so a group of this size, that's spread out could hear. Some of the older children (8-13) that weren't currently swatting flies tried their best to answer questions. This went on for about 5-7ish minutes before, "Farmer John," (Arleen's husband) yelled out how he wanted everyone's attention, and expressed how rude we were all acting (yes, those were his words) because some people were talking and not standing still quietly to listen to Arleen's presentation. This instantly put a sour taste over the whole experience. Parents were doing their best to make the best of a not-so great fly situation. Also, there was a certain level of excitement from the kids being around their friends and the anticipation of picking apples that deflated. There could have been a more tactful way to address this, as well as a realistic expectation of how little children (and adults) that are being swarmed by flies behave. Making a blanket accusatory statement to adults and children on what's supposed to be a fun family memory-making occasion was unacceptable. I'm glad to report "Farmer John" did not make further comments to parents or children, and the tour ended without further incident. I think tours would be good for a single family, people without children, or singles looking to learn more about apples. I also think anyone considering a private tour to inquire about the flies and expectations of children before visiting. This could potentially help you avoid a situation like the one shared above.

My resourceful sister found this place for both our families to gather and pick apples in Julian…read more It's a cute family owned/operated orchard that's not as big or as commercialized as others you'll find out here--perfect for an intimate family outing of apple picking! Because it's a smaller orchard, parking is limited to perhaps a dozen cars on the property. During our visit on a drizzly late Saturday morning, they had a guy helping cars onto the property. He was friendly and asked if there were others in my party and I replied we had 1 more car coming. He conveniently had us park together in a dirt path clearly intended for vehicles so we could easily leave together. There is no charge for parking. Before you start, the owner gives a quick orientation of the orchard, telling you what types of fruits are available and how to pick them. Then you sign a waiver and pay for bags to fill. Brown bags are for picking newly dropped fruit. White bags are for fruit picked right off the trees. The only available restroom is inside the farmhouse. They have several types of apples available here, in addition to a few pears and a huge plum tree tucked away in the back. Visitors are encouraged to use the bucket of feed to the delight of the chickens in their coop. The kids enjoyed roaming the orchard with Lola (grandma) and it felt like we were visiting an uncle's farm. It was a fun experience even with some rain falling. Again, please keep in mind this is a small family orchard so the trees will get picked clean early in the season so you need visit early. There wasn't much left by the time we visited, but we were here for the experience more than the volume of apples. With little effort, we filled 6 bags! I definitely want to visit again next season with my family and I greatly appreciate the owners literally sharing the fruits of their labor.
