The Barn Yard? More Like The Bullsh*t Yard." I thought I was coming to The Barn Yard for barbecue, but what I actually got was a culinary horror show that should be illegal in at least 12 states. The brisket was so dry I had to check if I accidentally ordered a stack of old coasters, and the ribs had the texture of a f*cking cinder block. But the real star of this disaster? The raw catfish stuffed with crab. Yeah, you read that right. Raw. Catfish. Stuffed. With. Crab. It looked like a science experiment gone horribly wrong, and the taste? Imagine licking the bottom of a bait bucket. I don't know if they forgot to cook it, or if this was their twisted idea of "surf and turf," but I'm pretty sure I now have parasites that are considering filing for permanent residency. The sides didn't save the meal either. The mac and cheese had the consistency of school glue, the coleslaw tasted like it had already been chewed, and the cornbread? That sh*t was drier than my last tax return. Service? Oh, it was impressive--if you enjoy waiting 45 minutes just to be served a plate of edible war crimes. Our waiter disappeared so long I started to suspect they were in the back trying to legally change their name to escape the shame of working here. The best thing I had all night? The moment I walked out the door. If you're ever tempted to eat at The Barn Yard, do yourself a favor--stay home, lick an old boot, and set $50 on fire. Same experience, less suffering. read more

What can I say , this food was not good. I only bought appetizers and a side. I went her cause I wanted collard green and the serving was so small it could have been eaten in 2 bits. But let talk about the fact that it was so much vinegar in them that it's smelled up my car through two containers and a bag. Corn fritters I had never had before but hope that, they are better then this. They where still doughy and mite have had a piece or two of corn in the whole ball. Fried green tomatoes I don't know what was worse that they were to salty or maybe it was the to much pepper that got caught in the back of my throat and burned my mouth. My family has had multiple good experiences eating at this restaurant but today was NOT one of those times. Our family of six were welcomed and seated quickly. One other group of 4-5 came in after us, but we were the only two groups eating at the restaurant. There were three waitresses "working". I only saw one man in the kitchen. Our waitress took our drink order, brought our drinks, and then returned to sit at the bar and watch TV. After 5 minutes or so of waiting, I got the attention of one of the other waitresses and told her we were ready to give our order. After giving our order, we waited 30 minutes with NO ONE checking on us or giving us an update on our order. The waitresses were too busy socializing at the bar beside us. Our table was at most 10 feet away from them but they never even looked our direction. Around the 25 minute mark, the other group finally got their food. When my son-in-law watched the guy in the kitchen pass some food to the three waitresses, who then began to eat, while we hadn't even received our appetizers, we left. Feels like they didn't really put much care in the bbq and threw stuff together like an Applebee's. The service was good but unfortunately the product is not. I've picked up carry out orders several times for our office, as well as eaten in the restaurant. It is a great place! The service is always friendly and accurate. I will note, that just like everywhere else you go these days, they are understaffed. I doubt it is a problem of their own making, as it is very difficult to find staff these days. The food has a great flavor. I love their cabbage and corn fritters. I don't think I've ever gotten a food there that I didn't enjoy. I've picked up carryout orders several times for our office. First off, i was a first time customer coming in today! Right off the bat... Lynne H. Who was very knowledgeable and knows her stuff! Showed me top sellers of each course, favorites by locals, etc! Proceeded to tell me everything was local which I Loveeeee that fact. Not only health wise but taste wise. Local is always better in my opinion! I had a more than terrible experience at a nearby restaurant getting my family some food, I was craving something a little more savory, lol. I'm 7 months pregnant. Cravings are real! But Lynne heard my story being a first time customer and also hearing about my experience with the restaurant nearby. You can tell she's an honest, genuine, kind, humble person who would go out of her way to make sure the customer is happy. Very, very, very great impression on her and the restaurant that I've seen or been too. I'm talking like of all time and I've lived in Florida and have traveled all over! Great food, everything was fresh, not that I'm typically picky. I was honestly craving a bbq sandwich haha. This place did not disappoint me at all! And speedy service might I add! Made a quick stop as we were passing through from NC to Indiana. The service was excellent and great atmosphere. The food was good, however did not taste the freshest. Every band has to have a good lead singer that can do a good job on the tambourine as well. Brisket had no taste, beer was flat and tasted "limey". The waitress was argumentative and visibly irritated at something other than two unhappy paying customers. Receipt still showed wrong beer after replaced with non "limey" beer. Myself and my husband aren't from this area but we were tired and just wanted to relax before continuing on to Richmond V. Saw your sign on the interstate, took a chance and BOY ARE WE GLAD WE DID!!! Lynn met us at the door all smiles and took us to a booth in the back by a lovely fish tank. She suggested their 2 can dine basically a sampler meal. The pulled pork needs to be cooked longer. While flavorful and juicy, it is difficult to chew. The corn fritters are good (ask for them fresh). The sides I ordered were green beans that were flavored with pork like Mom used to make, and mashed potatoes and gravy which needed a lot of salt. They have a nice selection of pies and desserts, all home made. IF you expect an informative, interactive website that provides efficient delivery, this is not the place. The food IS good and actually a good value for your buck. But if you want to eat it at home, you better order by phone and pick it up. Not bad in a pinch but you have to compromise. The smoke on the ribs was great, truly well done but the sauces were bad. The house sauce was more than 80 percent ketchup with no other real flavor. It tasted like bad bottled sauce. The Carolina vinegar was super thin but delivered a great vinegary taste. The mustard was somewhat better manulipulated. The ribs were cool but I prefer that. The potato was starchy and cool but I shouldn't be eating them. The salad is iceberg, nuff said. The greens were missing something to offset the vinegar and giant stems. Overall I would come back for the ribs, delicious smoke, I would just take them to go and cook the rest of the meal myself. The staff were wonderful though! read more

Stopped by this place on Cinco de Mayo because all the Mexican places were packed. Big mistake! This was likely the worst BBQ ever. I had the Brisket, it was dry, tough, no smoke flavor. I am quite sure it was made a few days ago and just really-heated. My wife had the pulled pork with the same results. My son and daughter-in-law were with us and they too were very disappointed in the food. In looking at the reviews it seems that this place is very inconsistent, people either love it or like me really, hate it. So before you stop by you must ask yourself if you feel lucky. Decent BBQ in WV. They know how to cook out here....good meat...wish they would lay off the sauce some..someone is doing a good job cooking...why ruin it with the sauce? especially since we have 4 sauces to choose from on the table. The 4 sauces on the table - Ketchup, mustard BBQ (everyone in my party agreed this was the best), North Carolina vinegar (not very good for this style), and some of the sweetest BBQ sauce I have ever tried (a little too sweet IMHO). The Beef Briscuit and Pulled pork both were served with the sweet sauce on them (will ask for No Sauce next time) both were good...pork was better. Ribs were fall off the bone good....real good...someone know how to cook these right....once again...will ask for no sauce next time. Did I say the sauce was too sweet. Definitely not the dry rub ribs you can get in Memphis or Mississippi. I tried several sides (fries, onion rings, baked beans, potato salad, homemade chips, and mac and cheese) all were excellent, but would probably not get the baked beans or homemade potato chips again. I also tried a fried snickers bar and bread pudding at dessert - Never had a fried snickers ...doubt I will again...but was interesting....I loved the bread pudding and would like to try some of their pies as they look incredible. In terms of location, I completely passed by it and had to turn around. When you make a right onto Hospital Drive, it is to your immediate right next to "My Family Medical." It helps that they have a smoker in the front but the parking lot is tiny. Once inside, we were greeted and shown to our table. It was fairly busy and had a good turnaround. We put in our drink orders and were given menus. They are known for their smoked meats (ribs, chicken, and beef) and during the weekends they have smoked prime rib! Having never eaten smoked prime rib, I was really excited to try it. I ordered it medium rare and for my two sides got the mac and cheese and potato salad. My friend ordered a smoked chicken salad. Most of their entrees range under $10 except for some specials and ordering a full rack. My smoked prime rib was $16.99 and my friend's smoked chicken salad was $5.99 For our appetizer we got a basket of corn fritters ($1.99), which were immediately brought to us. It was a basket of about 7-8 pieces with a small container of butter. Points for speediness but the fritters were not hot and i felt that there was a bit too much dough and not enough corn. When our entrees came out, my sides were each in a small bowl. After taking the first bite of my prime rib, I was surprised by how delicious the smoky flavor permeated the meat and it was cooked to medium rare. HOWEVER, the meat was a bit chewy and it was a bit difficult to cut with my knife. Even though it was good, I can't get over how chewy it was and probably will not order it again. For my sides, I thought the mac n cheese was delicious! I'm a bit picky with my mac n cheese but thought the flavor was excellent. The potato salad was okay but didn't really stand out. I had a bite of my friend's chicken salad and thought it was a bit dry. I'm not sure how many waitresses was there, but it was fairly busy and our waitress did take the time to refill our water glasses and ask us how our food was. ForkYou had mentioned how delicious the bread pudding was so I looked at the dessert menu which is located right under appetizers. But my friend didn't even realize there was desserts until I mentioned it! They have Fried Oreos, Snickers, and Twinkies!!! I was elated!! Sadly they were out of the Snickers. But there out of the snickers so we ordered the oreos (.89/each) and twinkie (1.89/each). It arrived to us piping hot! I slightly burned my finers trying to pick up the twinkie so I sliced it in half and it was oozing creme. OMG... it brought back fond memories of the fair! Both were hot and delicious but I give the edge to my twinkie while my friend preferred the oreos. While we were waiting for our desserts, another waitress mentioned the specials as smoked trout and alligator bites!! We were really intrigued but thought it could wait for another day! We were given our receipts and you pay for it at the register. Talking with the cashier she mentioned about a dessert they will have where jelly roll cakes were sliced, battered, and deep fried! If you are in the mood for a fried and slightly sweet appetizer the corn fritters are worth a try. As far as meals go, I normally end up deciding between the bbq pork wrap and the bbq pizza. The wrap is filled with pork, cheddar cheese, and onions and you also get a side of homemade kettle chips. The pizza is piled with pork, cheese, and banana peppers. The bbq sauce on the table is pretty sweet, although nothing to write home about. The service seems to be pretty good, but I haven't been here when the restaurant is really busy. With a full service bar, beer, wine, and wings it looks to be a good place to meet friends after a game or a group run. I got smoked pork, brisket, red skinned potato salad, and bbq beans. All tasty but not to best version I've had. People's opinion on BBQ is very subjective. You'll enjoy your food. I order a piece of graham cracker pie. My chicken & brisket was cold, corn fritter was soggy from water on the meat, but my sides were warm. Kids food was warm - not even warm enough for o be concerned with them eating. This was our first visit to the Barnyard. We were definitely not impressed. I asked for white meat chicken, but all the chicken is pulled & mixed together. So I ordered pulled chicken. My daughter ordered the wings, and my granddaughter got a chicken sandwich. All the meats had some strange sauce on top of them, and were pretty much tasteless. The wings were so fatty that my daughter couldn't finish the first one. The waitress took them back and replaced them with boneless wings. The breading on the boneless wings had no taste, and that strange sauce was on them, too. The side dishes were very small, not worth the price, and, in some cases, of extremely cheap quality. The dish of corn my daughter ordered was practically colorless. We decided it must be generic canned corn. Our waitress was good, but it didn't make up for the horrible food. This place was truly spectacular. I walked in and they took my coat, and prepared my table instantly. It was really an amazing sit down place, but the atmosphere was truly elegant. Everybody seemed to have a shirt and tie which is really important for me, and I ordered the Lamb chops which frankly blew me away. Are you a huge fan of BBQ? Love the flavors of Memphis, the Carolinas, Texas, or St. Louis? Then this place is not for you. Do you love a laid back atmosphere with good appetizers, beer, and good service? Look no further because this place is for you. I've given it 3 chances and so far I have been disappointed every time. I have a 3-strike rule for all restaurants before I decide to never go again, this place had all 3 strikes in the first 3 visits. Every time I ordered the same thing, the dinner for two. It affords the opportunity to get the taste of all of their meats, you know, the thing that BBQ restaurants should be known for. The ribs felt boiled, the bones fell out without effort and they were flavorless and bland. WV is awful close to the Bible belt, this place should be familiar with Exodus 12:9 "Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire." If they weren't boiled before 'smoking' they were put in a container when they were way to hot and essentially steamed themselves leading to them becoming over cooked. The chicken was the juiciest of the 4 meats I have had there. It was however, over-smoked and bitter. The smoke was the only flavor in the chicken; there was no hint of skin, dry rub, or mop. To their credit, poultry can be a tough chore on a smoker. Pulled pork is impossible to make disappointing but they sure seemed to do it. I don't think they used a dry rub at all; there was no bark anywhere to be found in any of the meat. I say there was no bark because, while I found the outer layer of the pork shoulder, it had no qualities to make it seem as if there was a bark. I understand that when cooking large quantities of pork butt, a common technique is to foil or wrap it so you can avoid the stall and that makes the bark soft. There just simply wasn't any flavor that indicated a bark was ever formed. Their Texas style brisket was nothing short of an abomination. I've seen chopped brisket and I've seen sliced brisket. What they serve is neither of those things. It was pulled, it was like they cooked it to the stall temperature and wrapped it in foil with liquid until it was 200+ degrees F. They served braised meat that I'm wouldn't have guessed was brisket if it wasn't for the immense amount of grease that was in the pulled meat. Even for all the grease, it was very dry and flavorless as well, it was simply inedible. To their defense, their meal for two doesn't advertise 'Texas Style Brisket' it simply says you are getting brisket. They boast two sauces that are made in house, a regular tomato based and a mustard based sauce. I'm a fan of the mustard sauce but it tastes like a copycat of cattleman's BBQ sauce. The tomato based sauce tasted like a mix of ground pepper and ketchup. It left a lot to be desired and didn't do much by way of enhancing their meat. The sides are lack luster; the beans tasted just like pork and beans that they added uncooked onions to. The coleslaw would be better suited on a hot dog. The mashed potatoes and gravy were just that, potatoes that were mashed up and covered in gravy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them but they tasted simply like boiled potatoes that were roughly mashed and had gravy on them, not like there was any butter, cream, or flavor added to them. The mac and cheese was pretty good but I could have thought that solely because it was always the last thing I tried and was so hungry by that point in my meal that anything that was remotely reminiscent of having flavor tasted amazing. What really surprised me was the size of their menu; they are a BBQ place that offers not only BBQ meat but also a fare ranging from pizza to crab cakes. I haven't ventured to try anything other than the BBQ meats and appetizers there because frankly, they advertise themselves as a BBQ place, nothing else. Those corn fritters though; I'd love to have that recipe. For a BBQ place, their worst quality was probably the BBQ. I enjoy the atmosphere; I've never had bad service there by any means. It is somewhere that I will add to my list of places to get a beer and an appetizer when I just want to chill out and enjoy some live music. As far as the rest of the food that I've tried, never again will I order it. TL; DR If you are looking for good BBQ meats you have come to the wrong place, but the service and appetizers are hard to beat in this area. read more
